The Evolution Of Nanoparticles In Nanoparticle Doped Optical Fibers, Mary Cahoon
All Dissertations
Optical fiber and fiber laser technologies based on silica glass are critical to many technologies today. One method to improve the optical performance of laser fibers is engineer the local environment around the active elements in the glass. To that end, this Dissertation focused on the fabrication and characterization of fibers made with nanoparticles incorporated into the glass to control the local composition. First, the nanoparticle composition and structure was analyzed as it evolved from from the initially-synthesized form to incorporation into the dense aluminum-silicate glass. The aluminum oxide in the glass was found to be important not only to …
Incorporation Of Zinc In Pre-Alloyed Cuin[Zn]S2/Zns Quantum Dots, Jean Carlos Morales Orocu
Incorporation Of Zinc In Pre-Alloyed Cuin[Zn]S2/Zns Quantum Dots, Jean Carlos Morales Orocu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since the early 2000s heavy-metal-free quantum dots (QDs) such as CuInS2/ZnS have attempted to replace CdSe, their heavy-metal-containing counterparts. CuInS2/ZnS is synthesized in a two-step process that involves the fabrication of CuInS2 (CIS) nanocrystals (NCs) followed by the addition of zinc precursors. Instead of the usual core/shell architecture often exhibited by binary QDs, coating CIS QDs results in alloyed and/or partially alloyed cation-exchange (CATEX) QDs. The effect that zinc has on the properties of CIS NCs was studied by incorporating zinc during the first step of the synthesis. Different In:Cu:Zn ratios were employed in this study, maintaining a constant 4:1 …
Direct Solar Absorption Nanoparticle Doped Membranes For A Hybrid Membrane Distillation And Photovoltaic Cell, Alejandro Espejo Sanchez
Direct Solar Absorption Nanoparticle Doped Membranes For A Hybrid Membrane Distillation And Photovoltaic Cell, Alejandro Espejo Sanchez
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The growing demand for clean water supplies is driving the need for an innovative approach of water desalination. Developing a method for treating water with high salinities is possible with membrane distillation (MD). Additionally, MD is very attractive for pairing with solar energy due to the low temperature requirements. The integration of a membrane distillation system with a photovoltaic (PV) system will result in the co-production of electricity and clean water, thereby improving the economics of MD. Such a hybrid system will directly absorb thermal energy in the membrane for desalination while taking advantage of the spectrally selective nature of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bimetallic Gold-Silver (Au-Ag) Nanocatalyst Via Seed Colloid Technique, Berahim Nurafaliana
Student Works (2020-2029)
In the present study, unique catalysts of monometallic gold (Au), silver (Ag) and bimetallic gold-silver (Au-Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared with different size or diameters by the citrate-thermal reduction and the seed colloidal techniques, respectively. The catalytic nanoparticles were characterized by various advanced analytical techniques such as Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), zeta potential, electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), High-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission-electron microscopy (STEM) imaging and the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping. The catalytic performance of the nanoparticles were ascertained through the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in …

Master's Theses
The American Cancer Society predicts that 1,665,540 people will be diagnosed with cancer, and 585,720 people will die from cancer in 2014. One of the most common types of cancer in the United States is skin cancer. Melanoma alone is predicted to account for 10,000 of the cancer related deaths in 2014. As a highly mobile and aggressive form of cancer, melanoma is difficult to fight once it has metastasized through the body. Early detection in such varieties of cancer is critical in improving survival rates in afflicted patients. Present methods of detection rely on visual examination of suspicious regions …

The Effects Of Concentration, Stir Rate, And Processing Temperature On The Iridescence Of Polymethyl Methacrylate Nanoparticles, David Baruela
Materials Engineering
Synthetic opals were synthesized by creating polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanospheres in order to determine which conditions would create the best iridescent samples. The factors affecting the iridescence were nanosphere concentration, stir rate, and processing temperature. PMMA solutions were made by adding 17 mg of granular azobis to a solution of 16 mL of distilled water with 3 mL of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The solution was stirred at different rates, slow and fast, and different temperatures, 70 °C and 90 °C, under a constant flow of nitrogen gas for 40 minutes until the polymerization reaction was complete. Glass substrates were prepared …

Nanoparticles of metals and semiconductors are promising for the implementation of a variety of photonic and electronic devices with superior performances and new functionalities. However, their successful implementation has been limited due to the lack of appropriate fabrication processes that are suitable for volume manufacturing. The current techniques for the fabrication of nanoparticles either are solution based, thus requiring complex surface passivation, or have severe constraints over the choice of particle size and material. We have developed an ultrahigh vacuum system for the implementation of a complex nanosystem that is flexible and compatible with the silicon integrated circuit process, thus …
