Investigation Of Conductive Die-Top Thermal Capacitors During Short Circuit Operation Of Silicon Carbide Devices, Youssef Abotaleb Dec 2024

Investigation Of Conductive Die-Top Thermal Capacitors During Short Circuit Operation Of Silicon Carbide Devices, Youssef Abotaleb

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their superior thermal and electrical properties compared to traditional silicon devices. However, SiC power devices suffer from severe reliability issues arising from their mechanical properties. This is because the Young's modulus of SiC is about three times larger than that of silicon, which correspondingly raises the mechanical stresses acting on the bonding structure, often leading to device failure under power shock events.

Traditional packaging materials and designs tend to constrain SiC performance, as hot-spot temperature resulting from a power shock is one of the key factors …

Breakdown Of The Drift-Diffusion Model For Transverse Spin Transport In A Disordered Pt Film, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Giovanni G. Baez Flores, Wuzhang Fang, Alexey Kovalev, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Paul M. Haney, Mark D. Stiles

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Spin-accumulation and spin-current profiles are calculated for a disordered Pt film subjected to an in-plane electric current within the nonequilibrium Green's function approach. In the bulklike region of the sample, this approach captures the intrinsic spin Hall effect found in other calculations. Near the surfaces, the results reveal qualitative differences with the results of the widely used spin-diffusion model, even when the boundary conditions are modified to try to account for them. One difference is that the effective spin-diffusion length for transverse spin transport is significantly different from its longitudinal counterpart and is instead similar to the mean-free path. This …

Majorana Bound States In A D-Wave Superconductor Planar Josephson Junction, Hamed Vakili, Moaz Ali, Mohamed Elekhtiar, Alexey Kovalev

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We study phase-controlled planar Josephson junctions comprising a two-dimensional electron gas with strong spin-orbit coupling and d-wave superconductors, which have an advantage of a high critical temperature. We show that a region between the two superconductors can be tuned into a topological state by the in-plane Zeeman field, and can host Majorana bound states. The phase diagram as a function of the Zeeman field, chemical potential, and the phase difference between superconductors exhibits the appearance of Majorana bound states for a wide range of parameters. We further investigate the behavior of the topological gap and its dependence on the …

Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock Dec 2017

Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, complex anisotropic materials are investigated and characterized by generalized ellipsometry. In recent years, anisotropic materials have gained considerable interest for novel applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, mostly due to unique properties that originate from reduced crystal symmetry. Examples include white solid-state lighting devices which have become ubiquitous just recently, and the emergence of high-power, high-voltage electronic transistors and switches in all-electric vehicles. The incorporation of single crystalline material with low crystal symmetry into novel device structures requires reconsideration of existing optical characterization approaches. Here, the generalized ellipsometry concept is extended to include applications for materials with …

Electrical Characterization Of Irradiated Semiconducting Amorphous Hydrogenated Boron Carbide, George Glen Peterson Aug 2017

Electrical Characterization Of Irradiated Semiconducting Amorphous Hydrogenated Boron Carbide, George Glen Peterson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Semiconducting amorphous partially dehydrogenated boron carbide has been explored as a neutron voltaic for operation in radiation harsh environments, such as on deep space satellites/probes. A neutron voltaic device could also be used as a solid state neutron radiation detector to provide immediate alerts for radiation workers/students, as opposed to the passive dosimetry badges utilized today. Understanding how the irradiation environment effects the electrical properties of semiconducting amorphous partially dehydrogenated boron carbide is important to predicting the stability of these devices in operation. p-n heterojunction diodes were formed from the synthesis of semiconducting amorphous partially dehydrogenated boron carbide on silicon …

Photoluminescence Studies Of Amorphous Boron Carbide And Tungsten Diselenide Thin Films, David M. Allendorfer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

For many years scientists and engineers have been researching semi-conducting materials for use in a broad array of electronic devices. With the growing demand for faster, smaller and more efficient electronics, new materials must be characterized and their properties quantified. The focus of this thesis is to develop a system to measure photoluminescence in opto-electronic materials. Photoluminescence measurements are important because it can give researchers valuable information about a material’s band structure. This thesis begins by presenting the carrier recombination mechanisms and how they apply to photoluminescence. A system was developed to measure photoluminescence spectroscopy. This system was tested with …

Wide Bandgap Organo‐Lead Trihalide Perovskites For Solar Cells, Miao Hu Jul 2016

Wide Bandgap Organo‐Lead Trihalide Perovskites For Solar Cells, Miao Hu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Methylammonium lead trihalide perovskite (MAPbX3, where MA is methylammonium, and X is a halide)-based solar cells have been extensively investigated recently, with a demonstrated and certified solar power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 20%. To further boost the PCE beyond the Schockley–Queisser limit, tandem structured solar cells have been investigated based on integrating MAPbX3 and the lower bandgap solar cells. Although the best reported efficiency for this type of tandem cells is not close to the theoretically achievable value, mixed-halide perovskite MAPbBrxI3–x is still one of the most promising candidates as the wide-bandgap light absorber for the tandem application to match …

Growth Of Ws2 Thin Photovoltaic Films, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Aaron Ediger, Natale Lanno Apr 2016

Growth Of Ws2 Thin Photovoltaic Films, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Aaron Ediger, Natale Lanno

UCARE: Research Products

Through research for a material that is low cost, earth abundant, and highly efficient, Tungsten Sulfide (WS2) has been identified as a promising solution. From literature, it has been shown that WS2 possesses a band gap of 1.9 eV, which is ideal for a top layer heterostructure cell. While this is a favorable value, other properties needed to understand its value as a photovoltaic material are unknown. Through research, WS2 films will be grown through a sputtering deposition process and electrical characterization measurements will be performed to study these missing properties.

Turning An Organic Semiconductor Into A Low-Resistance Material By Ion Implantation, Beatrice Fraboni, Alessandra Scidà, Piero Cosseddu, Yongqiang Wang, Michael Nastasi, Silvia Milita, Annalisa Bonfiglio

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: Publications

We report on the effects of low energy ion implantation on thin films of pentacene, carried out to investigate the efficacy of this process in the fabrication of organic electronic devices. Two different ions, Ne and N, have been implanted and compared, to assess the effects of different reactivity within the hydrocarbon matrix. Strong modification of the electrical conductivity, stable in time, is observed following ion implantation. This effect is significantly larger for N implants (up to six orders of magnitude), which are shown to introduce stable charged species within the hydrocarbon matrix, not only damage as is the case …

Ellipsometric Characterization Of Silicon And Carbon Junctions For Advanced Electronics, Alexander G. Boosalis Dec 2015

Ellipsometric Characterization Of Silicon And Carbon Junctions For Advanced Electronics, Alexander G. Boosalis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ellipsometry has long been a valuable technique for the optical characterization of layered systems and thin films. While simple systems like epitaxial silicon dioxide are easily characterized, complex systems of silicon and carbon junctions have proven difficult to analyze. Traditional model dielectric functions for layered silicon homojunctions, a system with a similar structure to modern transistors, often have correlated parameters during ellipsometric data analysis. Similarly, epitaxial graphene as grown from thermal sublimation of silicon from silicon carbide or through chemical vapor deposition, tend to have model dielectric function parameters that correlate with the optical thickness of the graphene due to …

Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu Nov 2015

Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone and compounds are widely used in outer-space for bonding or potting spacecraft components. In geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO), the silicone may outgas species which can condense on optically sensitive surfaces and degrade their performance, therefore shortening the lifetime of spacecraft. In low-earth-orbit (LEO), the silicone rubber is subject to an energetic and corrosive environment. Atomic oxygen (AO) and ultraviolet radiation can cause abrasion and degradation of the silicone rubber, cause changes in existing condensed VCM films and affect the properties of VCM films condensing in this atmosphere. Experiments were performed to simulate GEO conditions. In …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Solution processed thin film photovoltaic devices are one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Organic solar cells have been intensively studied due to their advantages of light-weight, flexibility and low-cost materials and manufacturing. The organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have recently shown great potential application in solar cells. The PCE increased dramatically from 3.8% in 2009 to a certified efficiency of 20.1% in 2014. In this dissertation, we focus on the efficiency enhancement for solution processed organic and organic-inorganic solar cells.

In Chapter 2, I demonstrated that the crystallinity of the ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) at the organic active layer/ electrode …

Generalized Ellipsometry Analysis Of Anisotropic Nanoporous Media: Polymer-Infiltrated Nanocolumnar And Inverse-Column Polymeric Films, Dan Liang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Characterization of the structural and optical properties is a subject of significance for nanoporous material research. However, it remains a challenge to find non-destructive methods for investigating the anisotropy of porous thin films with three-dimensional nanostructures. In this thesis, a generalized ellipsometry (GE) analysis approach is employed to study two types of anisotropic nanoporous media: slanted columnar thin films (SCTFs) with polymer infiltration and inverse-SCTF polymeric films. The thesis presents the physical properties obtained from GE analysis, including porosity, columnar shape, principal optical constants, birefringence, etc.

The thesis reports on using a GE analysis approach, combining the homogeneous biaxial layer …

Influence Of Resonant And Non-Resonant Vibrational Excitation Of Ammonia Molecules In Gallium Nitride Synthesis, Hossein Rabiee Golgir, Yunshen Zhou, Kamran Keramatnejad, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Attempts on the selective promotion of gallium nitride (GaN) growth were investigated by deploying laserassisted vibrational excitation of reactant molecules, which deposits energy selectively into specific molecules and activate the molecules towards the selected reaction pathways. Laser-assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LMOCVD) of GaN was studied using a wavelength-tunable CO2 laser. The NH-wagging modes (υ2) of ammonia (NH3) precursor molecules are strongly infrared active and perfectly match the emission line of the CO2 laser at 9.219, 10.350, and 10.719 μm. On- and off-resonance excitations of molecules were performed via tuning the incident laser wavelengths at on-resonant wavelength 9.219 μm …

Low Noise, High Detectivity Photodetectors Based On Organic Materials, Fawen Guo May 2014

Low Noise, High Detectivity Photodetectors Based On Organic Materials, Fawen Guo

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Organic photodetectors (OPDs) are potentially useful in many applications because of their light weight, flexibility and good form factors. Despite the high detectivities that have been frequently reported for OPDs recently, the application of these OPDs for weak light detection has been rarely demonstrated.

In this thesis, low noise, high gain photodetectors based on organic and ZnO nanoparticles were proposed and demonstrated for highly sensitive UV light detection. The nanocomposite photodetector works in a hybrid mode of photodiode and photoconductor with the transition controlled by the UV light illumination. The nanocomposite detector shows two orders of magnitude higher sensitivity than …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Thermomechanically Processed Sulfur And Boron Doped Amorphous Carbon Films, Lonnie Carlson Aug 2012

Fabrication And Characterization Of Thermomechanically Processed Sulfur And Boron Doped Amorphous Carbon Films, Lonnie Carlson

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Small scale, high power density, reliable, and long-life power supplies would be useful or even critical for space missions or the growing number of microdetectors, microsensors, and miniature vehicles. Alpha or beta particle voltaic devices could satisfy these requirements but have been shown to degrade quickly due to radiation damage. Amorphous carbon (a-C) PN junctions or PIN devices could provide radiation hardness and sufficiently high efficiency. As the range of alpha and beta particles in a-C is ~20-120μm, much thicker films than are typical are needed to maximize collection of the particle energy.

In this work, the fabrication of thermomechanically …

In-Situ Ellipsometry Characterization Of Anodically Grown Silicon Dioxide And Lithium Intercalation Into Silicon, Eric A. Montgomery Nov 2011

In-Situ Ellipsometry Characterization Of Anodically Grown Silicon Dioxide And Lithium Intercalation Into Silicon, Eric A. Montgomery

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, in-situ ellipsometry and electroanalytical investigations of two electrochemical processes are reported: including the formation of anodically grown silicon dioxide and the intercalation of lithium into silicon. Analysis of the ellipsometry data shows that the anodically grown silicon dioxide layer is uniform and has similar properties as thermally grown silicon dioxide. The lithium-ion intercalation data reveals non-uniform thin film formation, which requires further studies and development of appropriate ellipsometric optical models.
