Three Essays On Corporate Liquidity, Financial Crisis, And Real Estate, Kimberly Fowler Luchtenberg
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
The first essay examines why firms with access to lines of credit (LOC) have different drawdowns and their implications for asset pricing, investment and profitability. Utilizing a hand-collected LOC dataset that extends the sample of Sufi (2009) to 2010, our principal finding is that firms with greater LOC usage are more financially constrained than firms with lower LOC usage. We also document that high users of credit lines have higher risk-adjusted returns, less investment in capital expenditures and employment, and lower profitability than low LOC users. An interesting implication of our evidence is that high LOC drawdowns could serve as …

Employability Advantages Of Marketing Education Industry Certification Examinations, Devon Ashley Elmore
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Industry certification of workplace skills is emerging as a key educational movement for career and technical education programs. Many states are now integrating credentialing into their programs with the goal of preparing students with labor market advantages. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the notion that obtaining an industry certification provides students with employability advantages. As a result, the purpose of this study is to collect and analyze empirical data to determine whether obtaining an industry credential can assist a prospective student with job obtainment.
This dissertation examines the use of the National Retail Foundation (NRF) Customer Service …

An Epistemological Inquiry Into The Incorporation Of Emergency Management Concept In The Homeland Security With A Post-Disaster Security Centric Focus, Mehmet Secilmis
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The historical roots of the Emergency Management concept in the U.S. date back to 19th century. As disasters occurred, policies relating to disaster response have been developed, and many statuary provisions, including several Federal Disaster Relief Acts, conceptually established the framework of Emergency Management. In 1979, with the foundation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), disaster relief efforts were finally institutionalized, and the federal government acknowledged that Emergency Management included mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery activities as abbreviated 'MPRR.'
However, after 2000, the U.S. experienced two milestone events - the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and Hurricane Katrina …

Force Out: A Dodgers Bankruptcy, 2013 University of Tennessee College of Law
Force Out: A Dodgers Bankruptcy, Richard Marrero, Cj Fayton
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies
The premise of a chapter 11 bankruptcy is that the business’ going concern value exceeds its liquidation value. It provides the debtor with an opportunity to restructure their debt so that they can pay back their creditors and stay in business.
The debtor’s filing of the bankruptcy petition creates an “automatic stay.”[1] The automatic stay is an injunction that prevents creditors from pursuing legal actions against the debtor and its assets. The automatic stay, however, protects not only the debtor but the creditors as well. In the absence of the automatic stay, creditors would “race to the courthouse” to …

In Re Dewey Ranch Hockey, Llc: The Bankruptcy Of The Phoenix Coyotes, Chris Rowe, Jeff Upshaw
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies
While only a small percentage of Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings garner the attention of the American public, a bankruptcy petition involving a “big four” professional sports franchise (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) is big news to the American sports world. Perhaps the reason is that few, if any, commercial entities make such a passionate connection with its customers as professional sports teams.
In comparison to the other members of the “big four”, the NHL simply does not have the same level of financial success. Almost half of the 30 NHL franchises lost money in the 2011-2012 season.[1] Of the nine …

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies
Circuit City Stores, Inc. sold consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software, and appliances in the growing consumer electronics market.[1] Circuit City was founded by Samuel S. Wurtzel in 1949 under the name Wards Company. The store named “Wards” was an acronym of Wurtzel’s family name’s: “W” for Wurtzel, “A” for his son Alan, “R” for his wife Ruth, “D” for his son David, and “S” for his own name.[2] Circuit City was the first electronics superstore and was the nation’s second largest retailer of consumer electronics as recently as 2004.[3] Circuit City began the superstore concept for …
A Blockbuster Failure: How An Outdated Business Model Destroyed A Giant, 2013 University of Tennessee College of Law
A Blockbuster Failure: How An Outdated Business Model Destroyed A Giant, Todd Davis, John Higgins
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies
The rise of the Internet in the 1990s and 2000s rapidly created new markets. Companies like Apple seized on the ability to distribute music online for a lower price than independent record stores, or even large-scale ones like Tower Records could afford, driving record stores to near-extinction.[1] A similar fate has fallen upon the video rental stores. Giants Movie Gallery and Blockbuster, driven by physical rental stores, began struggling to compete with streaming and mailing platforms. Both were driven into bankruptcy because they failed to adapt quickly enough. A series of poor choices by Blockbuster, including passing on the …
Individually Rational Buyback Contracts With Inventory Level Dependent Demand, 2013 Indian Institute of Technology - Madras
Individually Rational Buyback Contracts With Inventory Level Dependent Demand, Lokendra Devagan, R K Amit, Peeyush Mehta, Sanjeev Swami, Kripa Shanker
R K Amit
In this paper, we consider a supply chain coordination problem when demand faced by a retailer is influenced by the amount of inventory displayed on the retail shelf. We assume that shelf space inventory is used as one of the levers to stimulate demand. Our objective in this research is to design individually rational contracts that coordinate the supply chain when the retailer faces inventory-level-dependent demand. We consider a buyback contract where any leftover inventory at the retailer can be returned to the supplier at a pre-specified terms of the buyback contract. The existing buyback contracts in the supply chain …

Executive Stock Options As Mixed Gambles: Re-Visiting The Behavioral Agency Model, 2013 Melbourne Business School
Executive Stock Options As Mixed Gambles: Re-Visiting The Behavioral Agency Model, Geoffrey P. Martin, Robert M. Wiseman, Luis Gomez-Mejia
Geoffrey P Martin
Conceiving of stock options as providing the CEO with cues for the possibility of both greater prospective wealth and losses to current wealth, we re-visit predictions of the behavioral effects of equity based pay using the Behavioral Agency Model (BAM). We refine BAM’s original formulation and provide an explanation for previous conflicting empirical results by theorizing that the anticipation of prospective wealth attenuates the negative effect of accumulated current equity wealth upon CEO strategic risk taking. In doing so, we offer an advancement of the dialectic between: (1) classical agency scholars, arguing that equity based pay leads to more risk …

The objective of this study is to look at what dairy farmers need to do to grow and expand their business efficiently and effectively.
