Evaluating Venture Technical Competence In Vc Investment Decisions, Rohit Aggarwal, David Kryscynski, Harpeet Singh 2015 University of Utah

Evaluating Venture Technical Competence In Vc Investment Decisions, Rohit Aggarwal, David Kryscynski, Harpeet Singh

Faculty Publications

While much research emphasizes the importance of venture technical-competence for venture success and, therefore, the importance of venture technical-competence in VC investment decisions, we know little about why some VCs may be better than others at assessing the technical-competence of ventures. We gathered unique and proprietary data from 33 VCs and 308 ventures that sought series A funding from those VCs. We show that VC assessment of ventures predicts VC investment, and venture technical-competence predicts subsequent venture failure. This means that VCs that over-assess ventures are more likely to invest in firms that are more likely to fail. We then …

Killer Jobs: The Dark Side Of Being A Physical Education Teacher, Dale Finn, Robin Ammon, Kimberly L. Mahoney, Gil Fried, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Sport Management Faculty Publications

The profession of physical education (PE) teacher involves a variety of risks. Most PE teachers or future teachers are aware of the risks associated with their students becoming injured. Sport law classes often discuss negligence, risk management, proper supervision, suitable equipment, appropriate instruction, proper matching of opponents, etc. The focus is primarily or exclusively on student safety. Rarely is the focus on the risks PE teachers face themselves. This article discusses the largely neglected topics of transportation, workplace violence, and slip/trip and falls, all of which are occupational hazards for PE teachers, potentially associated with serious injuries or death.

Global Financial Model For The Value Chain, Robert Rainish, Pawel Mensz, James Mohs 2015 University of New Haven

Global Financial Model For The Value Chain, Robert Rainish, Pawel Mensz, James Mohs

Finance Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to describe how a valuation decision model for a firm in a multi-country environment can be used to determine the optimal value chain. The paper extends the initial work of Rainish and Mensz (2012). The paper examines how a global firm can optimize its value chain and how that chain will be affected when the value of various key variables change. Variables were selected (e.g. labor costs, transportation costs and transfer price tax rates) from recent studies by consulting firms Deloitte (2013) and the Boston Consulting Group (2014). The data used in the model …

Timing Attack Detection On Bacnet Via A Machine Learning Approach, Michael N. Johnstone, Matthew Peacock, J I. den Hartog 2015 Security Research Institute, Edith Cowan University

Timing Attack Detection On Bacnet Via A Machine Learning Approach, Michael N. Johnstone, Matthew Peacock, J I. Den Hartog

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Building Automation Systems (BAS), alternatively known as Building Management Systems (BMS), which centralise the management of building services, are often connected to corporate networks and are routinely accessed remotely for operational management and emergency purposes. The protocols used in BAS, in particular BACnet, were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations. As intrusion is thus likely easy to achieve, intrusion detection systems should be put in place to ensure they can be detected and mitigated. Existing intrusion detection systems typically deal only with known threats (signature-based approaches) …

Promoter Ownership And Working Capital Management Efficiency Of Indian Manufacturing Firms, John D. Obradovich

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Poor cash flow leads to insolvency of the firm. One of the most important factors that lead to poor cash flow is the inefficiency of working capital management. This study investigates relationships between promoter ownership and working capital management efficiency of Indian manufacturing firms. A sample of 151 manufacturing firms was selected from Top 500 Companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for a period of five years (from 2010-2014). Results indicate that changes in promoter ownership play a role in changing working capital management efficiency of Indian manufacturing firms by reducing their cash conversion cycle and by improving …

Efficient Aircraft Spare Parts Inventory Management Under Demand Uncertainty, Jingyao Gu, Guoqing Zhang, Kevin Li 2015 University of Windsor

Efficient Aircraft Spare Parts Inventory Management Under Demand Uncertainty, Jingyao Gu, Guoqing Zhang, Kevin Li

Odette School of Business Publications

In airline industries, the aircraft maintenance cost takes up about 13% of the total operating cost. It can be reduced by a good planning. Spare parts inventories exist to serve the maintenance planning. Compared with commonly used reorder point system (ROP) and forecasting methods which only consider historical data, this paper presents two non-linear programming models which predict impending demands based on installed parts failure distribution. The optimal order time and order quantity can be found by minimizing total cost. The first basic mathematical model assumes shortage period starts from mean time to failure (MTTF). An iteration method and GAMS …

Racial Differences In Job Attribute Preferences: The Role Of Ethnic Identity And Self-Efficacy, Jakari N. Griffith, Gwendolyn M. Combs 2015 Bridgewater State University

Racial Differences In Job Attribute Preferences: The Role Of Ethnic Identity And Self-Efficacy, Jakari N. Griffith, Gwendolyn M. Combs

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Using a sample of 149 white and 190 black business students, the authors examined racial differences in job attribute preferences. Results of this study indicate there were significant racial differences in 19 of 21 job attributes examined, with black students placing greater importance on job attributes than white students. Investigation of the mechanisms contributing to this difference reveals that the relationship between race and job attribute preferences was mediated by ethnic identity. Furthermore, the relationship between ethnic identity and job attributes was moderated by personal efficacy, with higher self-efficacy levels leading to greater importance placed on job attributes.

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson 2015 University of Windsor

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson

Alan J Richardson

The telegraph was the first practical use of electricity. It revolutionized commercial communication and facilitated the globalization of business. As the telegraph developed as a medium of international communication, regulation was needed to overcome administrative and technical issues, and, importantly, to establish accounting procedures for the distribution of the revenue to multiple national partners. This paper traces the evolution of revenue allocation models through three international organizations that ultimately lead to the creation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1932. The shifts in revenue allocation methods are consistent with a shift in focus of regulation from growth to efficiency …

The Effects Of Technology Innovativeness And System Exposure On Student Acceptance Of E-Textbooks, Madison N. Ngafeeson, Jun Sun

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The efforts of educators in the last three decades have, among other things, focused on the use of information technology (IT) in education. It has become commonplace to view information systems both as an effective carrier of course content as well as a cost-effective tool to improve student learning outcomes. One of such technologies is the e-book. Decision-makers in the education field need make sense of this technological transformation. However, despite the growing popularity of e-books in higher education, its adoption by students is yet to be crystalized. This study exploits the technology acceptance model (TAM) framework to examine student …
