Corporate Power Is Corporate Purpose Ii: An Encouragement For Future Consideration From Professors Johnson And Millon, Leo E. Strine Jr.
All Faculty Scholarship
This paper is the second in a series considering the argument that corporate laws that give only rights to stockholders somehow implicitly empower directors to regard other constituencies as equal ends in governance. This piece was written as part of a symposium honoring the outstanding work of Professors Lyman Johnson and David Millon, and it seeks to encourage Professors Johnson and Millon, as proponents of the view that corporations have no duty to make stockholder welfare the end of corporate law, to focus on the reality that corporate power translates into corporate purpose.
Drawing on examples of controlled companies that …

Similarities and differences between for-profit entrepreneurial ventures and nonprofit entrepreneurial ventures are outlined, and then the traditional format of feasibility analysis used by the entrepreneurial for-profit start-up is reviewed and analyzed. This four-stage analysis is then adapted to the needs of the nonprofit new venture enterprise. The benefits of doing a feasibility analysis for the nonprofit enterprise start-up are identified, and guidelines are suggested. An underpopulated research stream is identified and explained in this article for the start-up and early developmental phases of the nonprofit enterprise.
Managers' Responses To Formal And Informal Talent Management Practices: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study, 2017 University of San Diego
Managers' Responses To Formal And Informal Talent Management Practices: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study, Adriano Manuel Cabral Ferreira Polonia
Dissertations
Management of talent ranks high among today’s organizational issues. Accordingly, organizations are seeking relevant approaches to markedly interpret and improve employees’ talents. Despite these efforts, inconsistent definitions of talent and talent management (TM), along with insufficient empirical research, make it difficult to identify and comprehend the impact of TM practices or its absence on managers and their responses.
A convergent parallel mixed methods design using the Exit, Voice, Loyalty, and Neglect (EVLN) framework was used to identify (a) how managers respond to formal and informal talent management practices in organizations and (b) which variables – such as the level of …

Locked Up: Parallel Correctional Officer, Deputy, And Inmate Decision-Making Experiences In County Jails, Mariko Catherine Peshon
Dissertations
Recidivism is a complex phenomenon. Greater than 65 percent of incarcerated adults return to jail within three years. While numerous empirical studies focus on factors that contribute to recidivism, there is limited existing research that examines decision-making as one of these factors. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature and develop an understanding of the influence of decision-making processes on inmates and correctional officers and deputies in the California criminal justice system. An exploratory 2014 pilot study at three California county jails found correctional officers and inmates faced similar challenges related to decision-making as …

Environmental, Social, And Governance Risk And Performance: Implications For Audit And Corporate Governance Research, Jenna J. Burke

This dissertation examines oversight of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) related risk and performance. These considerations are a new piece of business language, and are crucial in monitoring and evaluating the sustainable impact of modern corporations. The dissertation is comprised of three archival studies, which together contribute to an emerging accounting literature at the intersection of audit and corporate governance. The first study uses hand-collected data on voluntary board-level committees that oversee ESG-related issues to investigate the performance implications of these committees. This paper presents a theoretical framework and methodology that incorporate the committee’s role in shared value creation and …

Three Essays On Corporate Governance And Politically Connected Firms, Justin Mindzak
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In this dissertation three essays on corporate governance and politically connected firms are presented. The first essay “Interlocked Boards of Directors, Corporate Governance and Earnings Quality” studies the effects of interlocked boards of directors on voluntary governance disclosures, governance practices and earnings quality. The Canadian environment, where director interlocks are prevalent, is examined. A checklist of twenty voluntary disclosure measures from proxy statements is developed and a direct measure of interlocking directorships is employed. It is found that interlocked boards of directors are negatively associated with voluntary governance disclosures and positively associated with earnings quality. From an accounting perspective, greater …

Does Volatility Scaling Improve The Performance Of Momentum Strategies In The Pakistan Stock Exchange?, 2017 Department of Finance and Investment, National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan
Does Volatility Scaling Improve The Performance Of Momentum Strategies In The Pakistan Stock Exchange?, Mohsin Sadaqat, Hilal Anwar Butt
Business Review
Momentum profits are low among stocks listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. We explore whether this can be improved by exploiting the predicted negative relationship between returns and volatility of momentum strategies. This relationship suggests that momentum returns increase/decrease with decrease/increase in the volatility/variance of momentum returns during the previous six months. We find that scaled momentum strategies outperform the traditional strategy in terms of higher raw returns, risk-adjusted returns and Sharpe ratios. To show the superiority of scaled momentum strategies, we bootstrap the sample 100,000 times and generate the lognormal distribution of holding-period returns for all momentum strategies. We …

The Impact Of Manufacturing Activities In The Trading Partner On Imports Into Pakistan, Aadil Nakhoda, Farooq Pasha
Business Review
Econometric analysis performed for this paper suggests that Pakistan is likely to import more from trading partners that have a larger manufacturing sector relative to their GDP for the majority of product categories. The impact is stronger for processed products. This implies a higher risk of import dependency and associated competitive pressure from imports on manufacturing activities within Pakistan.
