Background: Uterine fibroid embolization, though a widely available option in high income countries in managing symptomatic fibroids is relatively new in the East African region. It is currently offered at only one tertiary facility for the past three years. The symptom and radiological response in these patients, who literature suggests may have bigger fibroid burden and worse symptoms, is the subject of this study. Objective: Characterization of MRI imaging features in women undergoing uterine fibroid embolization and identification of clinical correlates in an African population. Methods: Patients with symptomatic fibroids who are selected to undergo UFE at the hospital formed …

The Role Of Inflammation In Contrast Induced Nephropathy, Elijah A. Kwasa 2013 Aga Khan University

The Role Of Inflammation In Contrast Induced Nephropathy, Elijah A. Kwasa

Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology

Background: Intravenously administered iodinated contrast media are widely and liberally used in daily diagnostic radiological investigations. Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is notable as the third commonest cause of hospital-acquired renal injury. Justification: The global prevalence of CIN from various studies ranges from 2-5% but an incidence of CIN of 12-14% in Kenya was highlighted by a recent study without an explanation for the markedly increased incidence. Intravascular contrast has been demonstrated to commonly cause renal vasoconstriction. However, the low incidence of CIN in the general population infers that contrast alone cannot be a causative insult. This study proposes that inflammatory states, …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior As A Predictor Of Radiologic Technologists' Use Of Patient Radiation Protection Best Practices: A Regional Study, Brenda L. Boyd

Dissertations

Problem. A growing concern exists that patients are receiving an increase in radiation exposure while undergoing medical imaging exams. According to a March 2009 report by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the U.S. population's total exposure to ionizing radiation has nearly doubled over the past two decades. With the introduction of new digital radiology equipment, patient dose is on the rise. Possible reasons for a radiologic technologist's behavior include: influence by availability or lack of equipment, policies, social pressure, attitudes, and a safety culture. Little research has been done in this area, specifically with applying a …

Higher Scrotal Uptake Ratio Of (99m)Tc-Mdp On Bone Scans In Newly Diagnosed Prostate Cancer : A Reliable Indicator Of Pelvic Node Metastasis., Maseeh Uz Zaman, Nosheen Fatima, Zafar Sajjad, Ibrahim Hashmi, Khalid Khan

Department of Radiology

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

Pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) is the gold standard procedure for nodal staging in prostate cancer (PC) but less commonly used due to its invasiveness. More commonly computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used although these have limited sensitivities and specificities. The aim of this study was to find out the correlation between higher scrotal uptake ratio (SUR) of (99m)Tc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) on bone scan and pelvic nodemetastasis in patients with PC at high risk for nodal metastasis.

METHODS:

This was a retrospective study which included 68 biopsy proven newly diagnosed PC patients who had …

Migration Of Health Workers: A Challenge For Health Care System, Shaista Afzal, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat

Department of Radiology

The migration of health workers has resulted in a growing apprehension universally because of its impact on health system of the developing countries. Although the choice to migrate is basically a personal one, however, the overall social and economic circumstances have important impact on the decision to migrate. The "push and pull" factors for migration are disparity in working conditions, pay, lack of promotion opportunities, poor living conditions, desire to gain experience, professional development, family background and family wealth. A strategic approach by the government and other agencies is mandatory for regulating the flow of health workers between countries. A …

Department of Radiology

We describe a case demonstrating Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging findings in association with Metronidazole (Flagyl) toxicity. MRI brain showed abnormal signal intensity involving dentate nuclei of cerebellum bilaterally symmetrical. The diagnosis of metronidazole toxicity was made by the MR imaging findings and supported clinically. In hospital, course of treatment drug was discontinued. Patient improved clinically with discontinuation of metronidazole. No follow-up MR imaging was obtained. In this report, we present a case depicting MR imaging changes within the dentate nuclei of cerebellum.

Landmark Optimization Using Local Curvature For Point-Based Nonlinear Rodent Brain Image Registration., Yutong Liu, Balasrinivasa R. Sajja, Mariano Uberti, Howard Gendelman, Tammy Kielian, Michael D. Boska

Journal Articles: Radiology

Purpose. To develop a technique to automate landmark selection for point-based interpolating transformations for nonlinear medical image registration. Materials and Methods. Interpolating transformations were calculated from homologous point landmarks on the source (image to be transformed) and target (reference image). Point landmarks are placed at regular intervals on contours of anatomical features, and their positions are optimized along the contour surface by a function composed of curvature similarity and displacements of the homologous landmarks. The method was evaluated in two cases (n = 5 each). In one, MRI was registered to histological sections; in the second, geometric distortions in EPI …
