Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background: The effects of living with a substance use disorder (SUD) are vast. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) has grown increasingly popular as a recovery tool among substance users but does not align with the popular 12-step model, which demands complete abstinence from narcotics and mind-altering substances. Objective: The primary aim of this phenomenology study was to explore the perspectives and attitudes towards MAT among 12-step participants. The secondary aim was to compare the responses of treatment and non-treatment professionals. Methods: This study used non-probability sampling methods to recruit participants who reported regular participation in a 12-step program. Semi-structured …

Acute Care Staff Interactions With Chaplains To Discuss Team Or Personal, Non-Work-Related Stressors, Gary Weisbrich, Sarah Sumner, Teresa Rangel
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background: Healthcare staff experience stress from the workplace when providing complex patient care and often may lean on specially trained spiritual support caregivers, or chaplains, for support navigating patient-related stressors. Yet, healthcare staff can also suffer from team-related or personal stressors that, if unresolved, could negatively impact care delivery. Little is known about whether, how often, and which staff may interact with chaplains for emotional support when experiencing non-patient-related stressors originating from work or personal lives.
Purpose: To describe the proportion of individuals who report discussing team-related or personal stressors with chaplains in the past 12 months, and to …
Alleviating Health Professionals' Moral Distress Through Hospital-Based Chaplain Care, 2024 Providence Sacred Heart
Alleviating Health Professionals' Moral Distress Through Hospital-Based Chaplain Care, Karen Colorafi, Sarah Sumner, Teresa Rangel
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background: Healthcare workers frequently experience occupational stressors that negatively impact their emotional well-being. Recent evidence suggests that healthcare workers’ occupational stressors may translate to moral distress, defined as emotional turmoil occurring over an ethical dilemma secondary to a patient care or team-related issue. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, moral distress and a wide range of psychological and physical issues have been linked to high rates of healthcare worker burnout. Increased occupational stressors significantly augment turnover intentions and behaviors and negatively impact well-being. The resultant turnover rates have reached an all-time high among professional registered nurses. Some evidence suggests that the …

Perceived Moral Distress Among Patient-Facing Healthcare Professionals During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Sarah Sumner, Karen Colorafi, Teresa Rangel
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background:
The most common framework for ethical decision-making in healthcare is principalism which is founded on three ethical traditions: utilitarianism, achieving the most good for the most people; deontology, upholding moral obligations to individuals; and virtue ethics, doing what is virtuous regardless of the consequences. Principalism is further guided by four principles: 1) respect for autonomy; 2) beneficence, the duty to do good; 3) nonmaleficence, the duty to do no harm; and 3) justice, the duty to treat similar cases similarly. Patient-facing healthcare professionals (HCPs) commonly expect all moral values will be considered when decisions are made that impact patients …

Intellectual disability (ID) commonly co-occurs in children with autism. Although diagnostic criteria for ID require impairments in both cognitive and adaptive functioning, most population-based estimates of the frequency of co-occurring ID in children with autism-including studies of racial and ethnic disparities in co-occurring autism and ID-base the definition of ID solely on cognitive scores. The goal of this analysis was to examine the effect of including both cognitive and adaptive behavior criteria on estimates of co-occurring ID in a well-characterized sample of 2- to 5-year-old children with autism. Participants included 3264 children with research or community diagnoses of autism enrolled …

BACKGROUND: To control the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), many jurisdictions throughout the world enacted public health measures that had vast socio-economic implications. In emergency situations, families of children with developmental disabilities (DDs), including autism, may experience increased difficulty accessing therapies, economic hardship, and caregiver stress, with the potential to exacerbate autism symptoms. Yet, limited research exists on the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on families of children with autism or another DD compared to families of children from the general population.
OBJECTIVES: To assess impact of the COVID-19 pandemic related to parental employment and economic difficulties in …

The Impact Of Brief Electronic Guided Mindfulness Meditation On Anxiety Scores, Sierra King
DNP Scholarly Projects
In the United States, anxiety rates are on the rise for the general population (Goodwin et al., 2020a). Prolonged and frequent anxiety can become unprompted and problematic (American Psychiatric Association, 2021). Management of anxiety is crucial for overall wellbeing. Access to treatment and resources for anxiety may be limited in rural geographical locations (Morales et al., n.d.). This DNP project sought to determine whether a brief intervention of electronic guided mindfulness meditation (MM) by Insight Timer is effective in decreasing anxiety in a rural populous. Convenience sampling recruited a final total of 11 rural participants who participated in seven sessions …

Objectives: Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a family of heritable connective tissue diseases. Primary practitioners are capable of diagnosing and managing EDS; however, few are knowledgeable and comfortable enough to see patients with EDS, resulting in delays in diagnosis and care. This study explores the barriers physicians experience with diagnosing, managing, and caring for patients with EDS, and potential resolutions to those barriers. Methods: As part of a larger online study, providers (n = 107) in the United States were asked to specify "What information would improve (their) comfort" in diagnosing, caring for, and managing EDS via open-ended questions. Results …

Research Symposium
Objective/Hypothesis: Bipolar disorder (BD) has the highest association with alcohol and other substance use disorders compared to other major psychiatric disorders. This patient population is particularly challenging to treat. We have previously shown that some patients with co-occurring alcohol use and bipolar disorders respond to the GABAergic agonist valproate (VPA), which is known to modulates the dopaminergic system, and also as an epigenetic modifier. Predictors of therapeutic response to VPA in patients with AUD/BD are not known, and the subgroup which would benefit from VPA is still to be identified. Recent evidence suggests that AUD promotes a pro-inflammatory state while …
