One Or The Other: Parent Religiosity Or Private School Choice May Reduce Crime And Paternity Disputes In Milwaukee, Marilyn Anderson Rhames, Patrick J. Wolf

School Choice Demonstration Project

Religious faith is one of the strongest motivators known to man. For millennia, human beings have turned to a higher power to help them cope with the challenges of life and define their values and behaviors. Millions of people have died for their faith. Yet, when it comes to public education reform and research, the influence of religion is grossly underexplored. This study takes some initial steps to change that. We analyze parent survey responses from the 2008 Milwaukee Parent Choice Program (MPCP) Longitudinal Education Growth Study Baseline Report. Our analysis compares MPCP students who were matched to students from …

Falk College Research Center

Purpose: Children who grow up outside the care of their biological parents – e.g., those in adoptive, foster, or kinship (AFK) care – experience poorer educational outcomes than their peers. However, the protective factors that could mitigate any risks of AFK care have received less attention. One understudied area is the participation of AFK youth in organized activities (e.g., extracurricular or afterschool programs).

Method: Drawing on nationally representative data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (n=16,197), this study used multilevel modeling to (1) examine the association of AFK care status with organized activity participation and …

Local Elections In Kosovo, A Set Theoretic Model Of Explanation, Mehdi Sejdiu Oct 2021

Local Elections In Kosovo, A Set Theoretic Model Of Explanation, Mehdi Sejdiu

UBT International Conference

In the 2014 local elections in Kosovo many mainstream parties lost ‘partisan’ municipalities they have governed for 14 years. This disruptive election exhibited the high electoral volatility in the country, rather than the expected consolidation of the party system. Using the Qualitative Comparative Analysis this paper tests the configurations of conditions under which governing mayors of 2014, gained or lost votes in the subsequent elections in 2017. With the standard analysis we tested the variables of new/old parties, mayor popularity, voter turn-out, kept promises and municipality performances. The findings show that old incumbent parties with bad performance were more likely …

UBT International Conference

During the last decade in the education system of Kosovo, there has been an increase in demands for increased student representation in the decision-making processes of universities. During the last decade, efforts have been made for the concept of joint leadership to be implemented by Kosovar universities (public and private). This can be justified because students are the primary actors influenced by these decisions, and consequently, they should be held accountable for these decisions. To see how effective the work of these bodies has been, this paper aims to analyse research and elaborate at what level is the degree of …

Men who have sex with men and transgender women in the United States are at increased risk for HIV and may benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a once-a-day pill to prevent HIV. Due to stigma and discrimination, sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations are also at risk for depression and anxiety. This scoping review sought to identify literature addressing relationships between the PrEP care continuum, depression, and anxiety among SGM individuals and others at high risk for HIV. We conducted a systematic review of four databases (i.e., PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Google Scholar) and identified 692 unique articles that …

Can Democratic Subjectivity Be A Way Out Of Recent Crisis Of Democracy? The Case Of Turkey, Erdem Damar Oct 2021

Can Democratic Subjectivity Be A Way Out Of Recent Crisis Of Democracy? The Case Of Turkey, Erdem Damar

UBT International Conference

Drawing from poststructuralist perspective with a specific emphasis on agonistic democracy, this paper emphasises on the notion of democratic subjectivity as a possible way out of the contemporary crisis of liberal democracy. The two faces of this crisis will be elaborated in the first part. While the crisis of democracy is largely produced by the implementations of conservative, technocratic and capitalist politics that embrace minimalist approaches to democracy by reducing it into a set of rules to govern politics, it also gains visibility to the emergence of a wide range of counter-mobilisations contesting these neoliberal variants. In that respect, post-structuralist …

The Gap Between The Legal Framework And Social Order In Addressing Property Rights For Kosovo Women, Hanza Kastrati, Krenare Lika, Riola Morina, Dritero Arifi

UBT International Conference

The primary purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that influence the creation of a gender gap for the right to inherit property. The focus falls on factors such as the legal framework and social norms, where one of these factors has managed to bring stagnation in the social, economic and intellectual development of the entire Kosovo state and mainly appears to affect women to a large extent. A more detailed and in-depth explanation and understanding of why this space is creating and the discrepancy between the legal framework (perfectly drafted) and social norms (terribly wrong) are the …

Richards, Emily M. Wright, Alyssa Nystrom, Sheena Gilbert, Caralin Branscum

Recent legislation in multiple states has called for studies on the scope of missing Native American persons. Here we report on one such study from Nebraska by first describing the practical and methodological issues for researchers to consider when examining data on missing Native persons. Then, using data from four point-in-time-counts in 2020, rates of Native American missing persons as well as case contexts over the study period are reported. Findings show that Native Americans are disproportionately represented among Nebraska's missing persons, that reports often involve minor boys, and that cases are dynamic and most are resolved quickly. Relatedly, most …

Albanian Young People Towards Europe, Emanuela Ismaili, Edmond Dragoti Oct 2021

Albanian Young People Towards Europe, Emanuela Ismaili, Edmond Dragoti

Albania experienced one of the harshest communist regimes in Europe and self –imposed isolation until ‘90. She has also experienced a long and slow transition process as compare to other countries. This transitional processes was hard and brought forward numerous social, economic, and political challenges most of which are still experiencing complex and burdensome transformations even as many as two decades after the fall of communism.

Consequently, young people in Albania became marginalized – socially, economically and politically, thus becoming one of the most vulnerable social category to a large extent affected by the delayed transition to democracy. Challenges – …

This study examines the influence of adolescents’ gender, age, locality, and history of sexual victimisation on adolescents’ help-seeking intention for sexual exploitation. It compares how these demographic variables influence adolescents’ intention to seek help from formal sources (teachers, police, doctors/nurses, counsellors/social workers, local government leaders, and religious leaders); informal sources (parents, i.e., father and mother), guardians (uncles, aunts and grandparents); siblings (brothers, sisters or cousins), and friends. In this study, a cross-sectional survey is used to examine responses from a stratified random sample of 1,116 adolescents aged 13-17 years (M = 15.66; SD = 1.09), recruited from rural and urban …

Gender Inequalities In Pedagogical Classroom Practice: What Influence Do Teachers Make?, Rehema J. Mwakabenga,, Sotco Claudius Komba

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Most Sub-Saharan African countries have made great efforts towards promoting gender equality in gaining access to, and completing, education cycles. Regardless of such efforts, less attention has been paid to gender-biased classroom practices that affect students’ effective learning. This disparity calls for nuanced understanding of teachers’ classroom practices that perpetuate gender inequality with a view of devising mechanisms for improvement. This paper specifically analyses patterns of gender inequalities caused by teachers in the classroom through their knowledge, beliefs and behaviours. Data were obtained from a review of 55 empirical and theoretical publications on gender in education, of which 26 articles …
