The ‘Workflow Librarian’ Reaching Library Users Where They Are, Matthew Hayes, Rebecca Blakiston, Aaron Tay, Roger Schonfeld Nov 2021

The ‘Workflow Librarian’ Reaching Library Users Where They Are, Matthew Hayes, Rebecca Blakiston, Aaron Tay, Roger Schonfeld

Research Collection Library

How do libraries add value for patrons increasingly working outside library-preferred workflows (e.g. searching via Google Scholar), and accessing the library’s collection off-campus? This is a question of profound relevance to all library stakeholders – librarians, publishers, and patrons alike – and one that must be addressed to maintain mission relevance. It will mean finding new ways of service delivery and service provision that support learning and research not just remotely, but outside library-preferred workflows. It will mean putting the library ‘in the life of the user’ by designing library services that ‘surface content in the places where users actually …

Mentoring Each Other: Creating A Community Of Practice For Aspiring And Current Library Managers, Rebecca Seipp, Alyssa Archer, Candice Benjes-Small, Katelyn Burton, Jennifer Resor-Whicker

WRL Faculty Scholarship

Integrating formal management training into library school curriculum has been a topic of discussion for years, with varying progress. And in our experience, librarians are rarely given formal training on the job before becoming managers. We need to find ways to support new managers, helping them to acquire skills to handle the interpersonal, economic, and political challenges. Human Resources departments can provide valuable training in policy and procedures of the organization, but libraries have unique management challenges that may not exist elsewhere on campus. Librarians may be asked to manage faculty, staff, and student workers. They may need to arrange …

The Value Of Adapting Counseling To Client’S Spirituality And Religion: Evidence-Based Relationship Factors, Amelia L. Evans, Jennifer Koenig Nelson

Graduate School Faculty Publications

There is a strong tradition of attention to relationship factors in the field of counseling. The research on the importance of the relationship and adapting to client factors continues to grow, supporting the importance of professional multicultural competence. The field of counseling, specifically within the United States context, has focused on Multicultural Counseling Competencies with more recent emphasis on social justice through the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies. Within these competencies, spirituality and religion are mentioned as multicultural components to consider as potentially salient to clients. Yet, there has been less emphasis on ways to adapt counseling to a …

Authoritative Education: The Recommended Practice For Educators, Manuel Moral, Octavio Ramirez, Malcolm Cort, George Ashley Nov 2021

Authoritative Education: The Recommended Practice For Educators, Manuel Moral, Octavio Ramirez, Malcolm Cort, George Ashley

Social Work Faculty Publications

Seventh-day Adventist educators believe that true education “is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come.”1 This is more than an aspirational aim. For this to occur, educators must be intentional in making decisions that will help cultivate an environment where growth takes place. The goal of this article is to inspire Christian teachers and administrators to view an authoritative style as the recommended practice in the complex process of educating …

Training is often the first intervention child welfare agencies use to address critical workforce development issues. This QIC-Tip aims to answer child welfare agency leaders’ questions about effective training strategies to increase knowledge, enhance skills, and improve job performance. Answers are drawn from the QIC-WD Umbrella Summaries which present a synopsis of the published meta-analyses of specific workforce topics.

What broad-based training approaches can improve employee learning outcomes and job performance?

Coaching uses a structured learning process, over time, to help the learner reach specific goals. Meta-analytic research on the use of professional coaches (not managers or experienced coworkers) …

Paying “Lip Service” To Gender Equality: The Hollow Implementation Of Gender Mainstreaming In Jordan, Bipasha Baruah Nov 2021

Paying “Lip Service” To Gender Equality: The Hollow Implementation Of Gender Mainstreaming In Jordan, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Gender equality became a focal point in Jordanian civil society organizations (CSOs) after the establishment of the Jordanian National Commission for Women in 1992. Gender equality issues have enjoyed growing attention globally within CSOs since the 1990s, especially after the UN World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. In this chapter, we complement findings from a literature review of gender and development programming in CSOs in the MENA region with data collected from 23interviews with a diverse sample of international, state-led, royal, and non-royal affiliated CSOs in Jordan. Our findings suggest that gender equality is used more often as …

Indigenous-Led Conservation Reading List, Megan Youdelis, Kim Tran, Elizabeth Lunstrum Nov 2021

Indigenous-Led Conservation Reading List, Megan Youdelis, Kim Tran, Elizabeth Lunstrum

Environmental Studies Program Faculty Publications and Presentations

This list compiles literature relevant to the bourgeoning Indigenous-led conservation movement, be that through Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs, Canada), Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs, global), or various other forms of Indigenous-led governance or co-governance mechanisms that elevate Indigenous rights, responsibilities, and legal traditions. The introductory Colonial Conservation section is not exhaustive, but rather provides context for the main import of the collection, which is to highlight the possibilities, successes, and challenges associated with decolonizing conservation through Indigenous-led governance. The list is global in scope but has been shaped by the Indigenous Circle of Experts’ (2018) report, We …

Cetacean Acousticwelfare In Wild And Managed-Care Settings: Gaps And Opportunities, Paige E. Stevens, Heather Hill, Jason N. Bruck Nov 2021

Cetacean Acousticwelfare In Wild And Managed-Care Settings: Gaps And Opportunities, Paige E. Stevens, Heather Hill, Jason N. Bruck

Faculty Publications

Cetaceans are potentially at risk of poor welfare due to the animals’ natural reliance on sound and the persistent nature of anthropogenic noise, especially in the wild. Industrial, commercial, and recreational human activity has expanded across the seas, resulting in a propagation of sound with varying frequency characteristics. In many countries, current regulations are based on the potential to induce hearing loss; however, a more nuanced approach is needed when shaping regulations, due to other non-hearing loss effects including activation of the stress response, acoustic masking, frequency shifts, alterations in behavior, and decreased foraging. Cetaceans in managedcare settings share the …

Birds Of A Feather Lockdown Together: Mutual Bird-Human Benefits During A Global Pandemic, Michael Brock, Jacqueline Doremus, Liqing Li Nov 2021

Birds Of A Feather Lockdown Together: Mutual Bird-Human Benefits During A Global Pandemic, Michael Brock, Jacqueline Doremus, Liqing Li

Economics

Feeding backyard wildlife has impure public good characteristics - it provides satisfaction to humans, both private and public, while also improving bird populations. We document a surge in human interest in connecting with wild birds during lockdowns in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Using an event-study design, we find large increases in bird engagement began soon after the start of the COVID-19 lockdowns in Spring 2020. Responses were stronger for areas with more bird species. Investments appear sustained, beginning first with bird feeders, then seed and finally baths. Beyond bird survival, bird feeding can potentially enhance humans' connection to nature …

Redistricting Threats To New York’S Hispanic Congressional Representation, Carlos Vargas-Ramos Nov 2021

Redistricting Threats To New York’S Hispanic Congressional Representation, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

The New York Independent Redistricting Commission has released draft maps of congressional, State Senate, and State Assembly districts drawn after the apportionment process, following the 2020 decennial census. While not final, some of the proposed maps threaten Hispanic congressional representation by eliminating one congressional district currently represented by a Hispanic member of the House of Representatives, diluting Hispanic population in several Hispanic majority districts, and reducing the likelihood of Hispanic representation in neighborhoods that have recently achieved Hispanic representation. Paradoxically, the attempts to dilute Hispanic political representation come on the heels of large Hispanic population increases across the state that …
