A Year Of Progress: Publishers And Libraries Collaborating In Crisis Times And Planting The Seeds For Sustainable Ecosystems, Brittany Haynes, Antje Mays

Library Presentations

Increasing volumes of published research, proliferating research infrastructures, the rise of the Open Access movement, flat or declining library budgets, and inflexible purchasing and licensing models have led to growing fissures in the marketplace, especially exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Crucial for sustaining research, education, inquiry, and professional development, the information ecosystem faces a sustainability crisis from these pressures. Yet, some publishers have taken an innovative stance in partnering with libraries through flexible purchasing and licensing options, various access options and benefits as ways for meeting actual content needs without forcing bundle purchases, openness to custom packages, growing and diversifying …

Theory And Algorithms For Systems Optimization, Vahid Mahmoodian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents four sets of contributions in the field of theory and algorithms for system optimization. In the first set, we introduce a simulation optimization method for redistributing bikes in a free-floating bike sharing system. The second set of contributions is a framework for batching queries in large databases to optimize the data retrieval time. The third set includes two branch-and-bound algorithms to solve minimum multiplicative programming problems and one branch-and-bound algorithm to solve the maximum form of the mentioned problems. At last, the fourth set presents an approach to fairlyassign delivery tasks in an outsourcing last-mile delivery system …

Predicting The Adoption Of Password Managers: A Tale Of Two Samples, Shelia Kennison, D. Eric Chan-Tin Nov 2021

Predicting The Adoption Of Password Managers: A Tale Of Two Samples, Shelia Kennison, D. Eric Chan-Tin

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Using weak passwords and re-using passwords can make one vulnerable to cybersecurity breaches. Cybersecurity experts recommend the adoption of password managers (PMs), as they generate and store strong passwords for all accounts. Prior research has shown that few people adopt PMs. Our research examined PM adoption in a sample of 221 undergraduates from psychology courses and a sample of 278 MTurk workers. We hypothesized that PM adoption could be predicted using a small set of user characteristics (i.e., gender, age, Big Five personality traits, number of devices used, frequency of using social media, and cybersecurity knowledge). The results showed that …

Can Preference Policies Advance Racial Justice?, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson Nov 2021

Can Preference Policies Advance Racial Justice?, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mitigating the harms of gentrification to communities of color is a pressing challenge. One promising approach is preference policies that enable long-term residents to remain in or return to gentrifying neighborhoods. This mixed-methods study evaluates the City of Portland’s “Preference Policy,” which provides targeted affordable rental housing to residents displaced from a historically Black neighborhood. This paper draws on survey, interview, and focus group data to explore resident motivations, changes to well-being, and recommendations for improving the policy. Findings suggest preference policies can enhance well-being, and underscore the need for comprehensive strategies to advance racial justice in gentrifying neighborhoods.

All Social Media Is Not Created Equal: Instagram, Finsta, And Loneliness, Rebecca Schoenfeld, Katherine L. Fiori Nov 2021

All Social Media Is Not Created Equal: Instagram, Finsta, And Loneliness, Rebecca Schoenfeld, Katherine L. Fiori

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Research on the relationships between social media use and loneliness has produced mixed findings, in part because people use social media in different ways. Finsta is a private Instagram account followed only by a small group of the user’s friends and is considered to be a more authentic form of social media. The purpose of the present study was to examine the differential associations of Instagram and Finsta use with social and emotional loneliness and to investigate off-line engagement as a potential mediator of these associations. With data from an online survey given to N = 330 emerging adults, a …

Publications

This study reviewed the factors which influence passengers’ behavioral intentions on using biometrics at airports. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) served as the theoretical foundation and included perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The study also examined the effect of passengers’ privacy concerns on their behavioral intentions and assessed the moderating influence of privacy on the influencing factors. Following a quantitative method, 689 participants responded to an online survey while data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM). Attitudes and subjective norms were found to significantly influence passengers’ behavioral intentions to use biometrics. However, perceived behavioral control …

Cool Under Fire: Psychopathic Traits And Decision-Making In Law Enforcement-Oriented Populations, Sean J. Mckinley Nov 2021

Cool Under Fire: Psychopathic Traits And Decision-Making In Law Enforcement-Oriented Populations, Sean J. Mckinley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Law enforcement is an occupation that is typically characterized by high stress, physical danger, and potential for use of excessive force to subdue suspects of criminal activity. Compared to other jobs, the law enforcement profession is considered a high-stakes occupation that has the potential to greatly impact public safety, and officers must face daily dangers not experienced in other professions. While much research has focused on traditional models of personality and police performance (i.e., Big Five traits; Schneider, 2002; Twersky-Glasner, 2005), there may be utility in examining police officer performance through the lens of the triarchic psychopathy domains (Patrick, Fowles, …

Testing The Congruence Of Espousals And Enactments Predicting Team Innovation, Rylan M. Charlton Nov 2021

Testing The Congruence Of Espousals And Enactments Predicting Team Innovation, Rylan M. Charlton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study employs a social identity perspective (Hogg, 2008) to test whether perceptions of both espoused and enacted values drive team innovation, and tests whether both their level and congruence determine their impact on innovation. This relationship is tested in a multilevel latent polynomial regression model (MLPM) framework (Zyphur, Zammuto, & Zhang, 2016). The study also leverages block variable procedures (e.g., Edwards & Cable, 2009) to model the combined effects of espoused and enacted values, and tests whether these combined effects mediate between leader behavior and team innovation. This represents the first test of Zohar and Hofmann’s (2012) proposition that …

America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins Nov 2021

America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Football may be America’s most popular sport, but with growing evidence of the risk of sport-associated concussions, some adults are reconsidering which sports to encourage children to play. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 958 respondents, we examine how political party, belief in patriotic displays in sport, attention to concussion news, social class, and race are associated with support for children playing each of the five major U.S. sports: baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, and football. Our findings suggest that unlike other sports, attitudes about youth participation in football are divided by views on patriotism in sport, age, race, …

Comparative Study Of New And Traditional Estimators Of A New Lifetime Model, Sandeep Kumar Maurya, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Umesh Singh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In this article, we have studied the behavior of estimators of parameter of a new lifetime model, suggested by Maurya et al. (2016), obtained by using methods of moments, maximum likelihood, maximum product spacing, least squares, weighted least squares, percentile, Cramer-von-Mises, Anderson-Darling and Right-tailed Anderson-Darling. Comparison of the estimators has been done on the basis of their mean square errors, biases, absolute and maximum absolute differences between empirical and estimated distribution function and a newly proposed criterion. We have also obtained the asymptomatic confidence interval and associated coverage probability for the parameter.

Triumph Of The Commons: Sustainable Community Practices On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt Nov 2021

Triumph Of The Commons: Sustainable Community Practices On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

The history of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) has long been framed as a parable for how societies can fail catastrophically due to the selfish actions of individuals and a failure to wisely manage common-pool resources. While originating in the interpretations made by 18th-century visitors to the island, 20th-century scholars recast this narrative as a “tragedy of the commons,” assuming that past populations were unsustainable and selfishly overexploited the limited resources on the island. This narrative, however, is now at odds with a range of archaeological, ethnohistoric, and environmental evidence. Here, we argue that while Rapa Nui did experience large-scale deforestation …

Orphaned Landscapes: Violence, Visuality, And Appearance In Indonesia, Patricia Spyer Nov 2021

Orphaned Landscapes: Violence, Visuality, And Appearance In Indonesia, Patricia Spyer

Art & Visual Culture

Less than a year after the end of authoritarian rule in 1998, huge images of Jesus Christ and other Christian scenes proliferated on walls and billboards around a provincial town in eastern Indonesia where conflict had arisen between Muslims and Christians. A manifestation of the extreme perception that emerged amid uncertainty and the challenge to seeing brought on by urban warfare, the street paintings erected by Protestant motorbike-taxi drivers signaled a radical departure from the aniconic tradition of the old colonial church, a desire to be seen and recognized by political authorities from Jakarta to the UN and European Union, …

Pengaruh Glass Ceiling Terhadap Kepemimpinan Strategis Wanita Dalam Bidang Militer Di Indonesia, Muhammad Naufal Aflah, Laili Rahmah Mawaddah

Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional

In developing a career in the military field, there is no difference in opportunities and opportunities between male and female soldiers. However, until now there is still a phenomenon that shows that the number of women who occupy structural positions is very small. If any, the total does not have a representative composition in terms of gender. The existence of an obstacle that only applies to women, makes it difficult for women to reach the top of careers in their fields and leadership positions. As a result, there are only a few women who become leaders, especially leaders in the …

Women Report Worse Employment Impacts From Family Caregiving, Claire Pendergrast Nov 2021

Women Report Worse Employment Impacts From Family Caregiving, Claire Pendergrast

Population Health Research Brief Series

29.2 million people in the United States, most of them women, act as family caregivers while also holding down a paying job. U.S. social policy is notoriously unsupportive of family caregivers. As a result, families struggling to balance caregiving and paid employment face emotional, social, and financial stress, with especially severe negative impacts for women. This brief uses a nationally representative sample of family caregivers participating the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) to describe gender differences in how providing care to a family member impacts caregivers’ employment experiences. Findings suggest that women are more likely than men to provide …

Music And Autobiographical Memory, Amy M. Belfi, Kelly Jakubowski Nov 2021

Music And Autobiographical Memory, Amy M. Belfi, Kelly Jakubowski

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Listening to music can bring back vivid memories from one's past. In recent years there has been an increase in both scientific and public interest in the ability of music to evoke vivid, emotional, and rich autobiographical memories. For example, several “viral” videos have taken the internet by storm, illustrating powerful instances of music evoking memories in individuals with dementia – perhaps the most recent example is a clip of a former ballerina with Alzheimer's disease who recalls her dance movements at the sound of “Swan Lake.” Current scientific work in this area informs the mechanisms by which music induces …
