Smartphrases: Optimizing Discharge Education In Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Spanish-Speaking Patient Encounters, Somer Knight Jan 2022

Smartphrases: Optimizing Discharge Education In Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Spanish-Speaking Patient Encounters, Somer Knight

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Health inequities due to communication barriers exist at a high rate for those who identify with limited English proficiency. This quality improvement project aimed to decrease these inequities by providing pre-translated discharge instructions (AVS) to patients who receive surgical services and recover in the pediatric post anesthesia care unit (PACU) of a state hospital. Specifically, this project examined if the availability of pre-translated instructions (SmartPhrases) increased nurse and interpreter satisfaction with the discharge process, and improved their perceived level of equitable care they are able to provide. Discharge instructions were gathered from the participating surgical and interventionist teams, and the …

Contextual Inference Reading Comprehension Skill Activities As Determinants Of Reading Comprehension Performance, Joyce Njiiri Jan 2022

Contextual Inference Reading Comprehension Skill Activities As Determinants Of Reading Comprehension Performance, Joyce Njiiri

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

Reading comprehension is one of the most important features in the learning process for second language learners because texts are the means through which most concepts are learnt. However, it is one of the least developed linguistic skills as manifested in the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC 2010; 2011; 2013;2015;2017;2018). KNEC attributes poor performance in reading comprehension of passages to inadequate reading comprehension skill activities of contextual inference, note-making, paraphrasing, and summary writing among others during the reading comprehension lessons. Additionally, there is notable lack of exposure to reading comprehension skill activities to secondary school learners. The purpose of this …

Searching For Consistency In Attendance Data Recording, Reporting, And Utilization In The Usa, Patricia A. Graczyk, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, Amber Humm Patnode, Sara E. Moulton Jan 2022

Searching For Consistency In Attendance Data Recording, Reporting, And Utilization In The Usa, Patricia A. Graczyk, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, Amber Humm Patnode, Sara E. Moulton

Founder’s College - Scholarship and Professional Work

"According to the United States Department of Education (USDOE), 16% or over eight million kindergarten through twelfth grade students in the US missed 10% or more school days during the 2017−2018 school year. This is approximately 18 of 180 days required. We know this because schools are mandated to report their attendance data to their respective states and to the USDOE. There are concerns around accuracy and consistency because each state is al-lowed to compile data in their own way and report only select metrics to the USDOE to comply with federal guidelines. The consistency on federal metrics, nonetheless, allows …

Revealing Underlying Factors Of Absenteeism: A Machine Learning Approach, Francis Bowen, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, Jane Siegler, Marlin Jackson Jan 2022

Revealing Underlying Factors Of Absenteeism: A Machine Learning Approach, Francis Bowen, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, Jane Siegler, Marlin Jackson

Founder’s College - Scholarship and Professional Work

Introduction: The basis of support is understanding. In machine learning, understanding happens through assimilated knowledge and is centered on six pillars: big data, data volume, value, variety, velocity, and veracity. This study analyzes school attendance problems (SAP), which encompasses its legal statutes, school codes, students’ attendance behaviors, and interventions in a school environment. The support pillars include attention to the physical classroom, school climate, and personal underlying factors impeding engagement, from which socio-emotional factors are often the primary drivers.

Methods: This study asked the following research question: What can we learn about specific underlying factors of absenteeism using machine learning …

Cemeteries As Wildlife Habitats: Conservation And Management Issues, William Edward Lovekamp, Gary S. Foster Jan 2022

Cemeteries As Wildlife Habitats: Conservation And Management Issues, William Edward Lovekamp, Gary S. Foster

All Faculty Scholarship

For reasons we make apparent, management of cemeteries should be expanded to include wildlife issues and experts, just as they have botanists, arborists, and horticulturists. As cemeteries grow in number and size, they become habitats inviting wildlife, an interface for encounters between people and an increasing diversity of nature. It casts cemeteries as manufactured nature that is convincing and persuasive to wilderness inhabitants.

Regression Discontinuity Evidence On The Effectiveness Of The Minimum Legal E-Cigarette Purchasing Age, Jeff Desimone, Daniel Grossman, Nicolas Ziebarth Jan 2022

Regression Discontinuity Evidence On The Effectiveness Of The Minimum Legal E-Cigarette Purchasing Age, Jeff Desimone, Daniel Grossman, Nicolas Ziebarth

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Increases in youth vaping rates and concerns of a new generation of nicotine addicts recently prompted an increase in the federal minimum legal purchase age (MLPA) for tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to 21 years. This study presents the first regression discontinuity evidence on the effectiveness of e-cigarette MLPA laws. Using data on 12th graders from Monitoring the Future, we obtain robust evidence that federal and state age-18 MLPAs decreased underage e-cigarette use by 15–20% and frequent use by 20–40%. These findings suggest that the age-21 federal MLPA could meaningfully reduce e-cigarette use among 18–20-year-olds.

Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong Jan 2022

Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

Taiwan can be found about 100 miles off the southeastern coast of China in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of a main island and many smaller surrounding islands. Before the arrival of the Dutch, the only inhabitants of the island were the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, also known as the Formosan people, Austronesian Taiwanese people, or Gaoshan people, who had been there for thousands of years. For consistency, throughout this paper, I will refer to them as Taiwanese indigenous peoples. The Taiwanese indigenous peoples are made up of different tribes, traditionally with over 26, 16 of which are recognized today by …

Economic Sanctions And The Future Of The North Korean Nuclear Program, Drew Horne Jan 2022

Economic Sanctions And The Future Of The North Korean Nuclear Program, Drew Horne

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, has proven to be a stumping issue for policymaker and academic alike. Dubbed “The Impossible State” by Victor Cha (2012) and the quintessential “Hard Target” by Haggard and Noland (2017), North Korea’s unique mix of autarkic authoritarianism, stubbornly resilient socialist system, and burgeoning nuclear capability, all situated in perhaps the most geopolitically fraught region in the modern world, has led journalists, academics, policymakers, and even thrill-seekers (think Dennis Rodman) to try to understand this enigmatic, what Lankov (2013) calls, “political fossil.” Within the myriad issues presented by North Korea, two …

Effects Of Remote Vignette-Based Training On Social Initiations Of Young Adults With Autism: A Preliminary Report, Emily P. Murray, Amanda Karsten Jan 2022

Effects Of Remote Vignette-Based Training On Social Initiations Of Young Adults With Autism: A Preliminary Report, Emily P. Murray, Amanda Karsten

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

People with Level 1 autism have few work opportunities compared to neurotypical peers due to differences in soft skills. This study evaluates a training package for conversational initiations at work. Participants are young adults with autism who are at least 16 years old. Prior to the study, an employer survey was conducted to examine: (a) the social validity of researchers’ definition of appropriate conditions to initiate conversation and (b) whether written vignettes were ecologically valid with respect to common conversational opportunities in the workplace. During the Zoom-based training phase, which is ongoing, participants respond to vignettes (i.e., scenarios). Scenarios systematically …

Life Before Birth: A Thematic Analysis Of Memories Of Coming Into Life Part 1: Recollections Of Another Realm, Jenny Wade Jan 2022

Life Before Birth: A Thematic Analysis Of Memories Of Coming Into Life Part 1: Recollections Of Another Realm, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Autobiographic memories prior to birth remain controversial in psychology because such memories are traditionally believed to begin much later when some sense of self is formed. Prenatal sentience, including fetal learning, occurs in species from arthropods to humans, and evidence for autobiographic memories from pre- and neo-natal humans has typically come from clinical case histories of altered-state regression techniques eliciting records from adults or clinical case histories of children in normal states. This thematic analysis examined 68 “earliest memory” narratives submitted to an independent website to explore the question: what do people who claim to remember how they came into …

A Lost Generation: Perpetual Education Insecurity Among The Rohingya, Robin E. Al-Haddad, Kendra L. Duran, Saleh Ahmed Jan 2022

A Lost Generation: Perpetual Education Insecurity Among The Rohingya, Robin E. Al-Haddad, Kendra L. Duran, Saleh Ahmed

Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Education security exists when every child has equal access to quality education. Rohingya refugee children suffer widespread rates of education insecurity both in their home country, Myanmar and in their host country, Bangladesh. While the right to education is recognized in several human rights instruments, access to education is not ubiquitous, making the ability to achieve this right challenging for many Rohingya. Government restrictions on accredited education, COVID-19 related school closures, failures in launching a pilot of the Myanmar curriculum, and recent government plans to relocate refugees to Bhasan Char Island have created a ‘lost generation’ of Rohingya youth. This …

Environmental Displacement In The Anthropocene, Elizabeth Lunstrum, Pablo S. Bose Jan 2022

Environmental Displacement In The Anthropocene, Elizabeth Lunstrum, Pablo S. Bose

Environmental Studies Program Faculty Publications and Presentations

This intervention invites more substantial scholarly attention to human displacement in and of the Anthropocene—this current epoch in which humans have become the primary drivers of global environmental change—and sets out an initial framework for its study. The framework is organized around three interrelated contributions. First is the recognition that displacement is driven not just by climate change but also broader forms of environmental change defining the Anthropocene, including biodiversity loss, changes to land and water resources, and the buildup of nuclear debris, along with their intersections. Second, the framework parses out three distinct moments of displacement in the Anthropocene: …

Pants On Fyre: Parasitic Masculinity And The Fyre Festival Documentaries, Kristen Hoerl, Casey Ryan Kelly Jan 2022

Pants On Fyre: Parasitic Masculinity And The Fyre Festival Documentaries, Kristen Hoerl, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The documentaries Fyre Fraud and FYRE: The Greatest Party that Never Happened recount the fraudulent and imprudent decision-making process that led up to the ill-fated Fyre Fest. These documentaries represent the music festival’s failure through depictions of white masculinity that seek parasitic attachment and proximity to the hegemonic ideal of masculine authority in the neoliberal marketplace. We argue that these movies map the operations of an imitative form of white masculine subjectivity that thrives in precarity, even as they recuperate the status of late-stage neoliberalism by symbolically removing parasitic masculinity from the neoliberal social order that it feeds on.

Using Metaperceptions To Evaluate Conscientiousness And Predict Gpa, Montana R. Woolley Jan 2022

Using Metaperceptions To Evaluate Conscientiousness And Predict Gpa, Montana R. Woolley

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Personality measures have been used for decades to predict many important workplace outcomes, however, the literature reveals weak predictive validities (Barrick et al., 2001; Morgeson et al., 2007). This study investigates metaperceptions, or an individual’s belief about how others perceive them (Laing et al., 1966), to determine if they are a more effective predictor of behavioral outcomes than the typical self-report measures used today. Metaperceptions capture a different perspective than classic self-reports and other-reports, and therefore may measure a different source of construct relevant variance. Using a student sample (N = 181), we tested three main hypotheses: (1) combining self-ratings, …

Social Media And Journalism: How Twitter Impacts News Coverage In Kenya, Philip Mwaniki Njung’E Jan 2022

Social Media And Journalism: How Twitter Impacts News Coverage In Kenya, Philip Mwaniki Njung’E

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

Twitter had been extensively adopted by the public, journalists, and news organizations as a new digital tool for disseminating information. Therefore, if Twitter is considered a new and effective way of gathering information that makes up news content, an investigation on how it impacts news coverage, journalists, and newsroom practices is significant. The present study conducted said investigation and came up with findings that significantly contributed to the available information about the relationship between Twitter and news dissemination. It particularly investigated how Twitter impacts news content and coverage, journalistic routines, and newsroom practices in Kenya. This study draws its data …

Advances In Chemotactic And Non-Chemotactic Bioremediation Of Water: A Comprehensive Review, Sheetal Pardeshi, Prafulla Shede

Applied Environmental Research

Pollution has reached to a critical threshold affecting the climate and diversity of the planet Earth. All global authorities have included pollution control in their agenda for near future. Most of the environmental research nowadays is focused on removing waste generated by anthropogenic activities, may it be solid, liquid or gaseous waste. Bioremediation is believed to be the most eco-friendly approach for reducing or removing pollutants contaminating different matrices of the environment. There are various methods covered under the umbrella term of bioremediation. Chemotaxis-mediated bioremediation attracted attention of several research groups since early decade of twenty first century due to …

Soil Contamination And Risk Assessments On Selected Dumpsites Within The Basement Complex And Sedimentary Formations Of Ogun State, South-Western Nigeria, Akintayo O. Ojo, Oluwaseun T. Olurin, Oluseyi O. Adeleke Jan 2022

Soil Contamination And Risk Assessments On Selected Dumpsites Within The Basement Complex And Sedimentary Formations Of Ogun State, South-Western Nigeria, Akintayo O. Ojo, Oluwaseun T. Olurin, Oluseyi O. Adeleke

Applied Environmental Research

The concentrations of inorganic elements in soils of Saje, Ita-Oshin, Premier, and Oke-Diya dumpsites were determined using an X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer to assess the soil quality through chronological changes with depths. A soil core sampler collects 56 samples at 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm depths. Saje showed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, and Ti at all depths, while Oke-Diya revealed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, Ti, Mn, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni at all depths. These concentrations were in a closed range suggesting a build-up of elements in the soil profiles. Oke-Diya had …

Occurrence Of Microplastics In The Asian Freshwater Environments: A Review, Farah Akmal Idrus, Noradriena Mohd Fadhli, Mohd Nasarudin Harith Jan 2022

Occurrence Of Microplastics In The Asian Freshwater Environments: A Review, Farah Akmal Idrus, Noradriena Mohd Fadhli, Mohd Nasarudin Harith

Applied Environmental Research

Microplastics pollution has become a worldwide common problem. Despite the growing numbers in researches regarding the microplastics, the understanding of microplastics in the freshwater environment are still less. This paper overviews the present knowledge and findings on the occurrence of microplastics in water and sediment of the freshwater environments in Asia. The review also covers the size distribution, polymers, morphological characteristics and sources of microplastics to the freshwater systems. Perspective of the adsorption of heavy metals on the microplastics to the freshwater systems are also discussed in this review.
