Visual literacy equips learners with the dispositions to critically create, analyse, use, and share visual information. As one component of a discerning, ethical citizenry, visual literacy has become more essential in a rapidly evolving information ecosystem. Against this backdrop, the current Association of College and Research Libraries Visual Literacy Task Force conducted qualitative research from 2019 to 2021, interviewing visual literacy and information literacy experts to identify emergent trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping visual literacy in the twenty-first century. The findings from this study broaden current understandings of visual literacy and empower learners, educators, and practitioners to critically create, share, …

Many internet users often consult Wikipedia to read a quick reference on a subject, but the source tends to be viewed as unreliable by the academic community. Nevertheless, journalism and public relations courses can help improve Wikipedia. Four undergraduate courses — News Editing, In-depth Reporting, Sports Media, and Research Methods in Public Relations — in a journalism and mass communications department at a regional, four-year university in the southeast of the United States incorporated Wikipedia. This article discusses the benefits, considerations, and challenges that an instructor might experience when using Wikipedia.

This chapter presents the arts operating in two specific regions. Where arts organizations are located informs the political climate in which they work, their methods, and their constituency. The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) was founded by an act of congress in 1965 and is tasked with five key goals. These goals include increasing economic opportunities within the region, improving workforce readiness, developing and maintaining critical infrastructure, utilizing and leveraging natural and cultural assets within the region, and developing leadership and community capacity (ARC, 2019). This course offers an introduction to the causes and consequences of international migration and examines how various countries have responded to it. We begin by considering the myriad reasons why people move from one place to another and analyze the different strategies through which political authorities have tried to simultaneously facilitate and obstruct migratory flows. The tension between mobility and containment is a central feature of migration politics.
Our first set of readings offer a broad, historical overview of the relationship between states and migrants within the dynamics of global capitalism. Students will learn about patterns of regular and irregular …

Hugo Hinfelaar described, for precolonial times, a comprehensive domestic religion and family spirituality which he called “traditional dogma” or “family dogma”. What is left of it in Zambia? When and for what purposes are traditional religious beliefs invoked today and scrutinised in marriage and the domestic sphere? While many say, “We have no culture left!” traditional dogma continues to function as a “moral grammar” that anchors cultural identity. The marital life of a couple becomes scrutinised along traditional beliefs during family crises. Spillover Effects Of Quota Or Parity Laws: The Case Of Ecuador Women Mayors, Marcos Fabricio Perez, Santiago Basabe-Serrano

Do quota or parity laws designed to improve the representation of women in plurinominal elections have a spillover effect to uninominal elections? We empirically test this theory by analyzing the effects of quota and parity legislations implemented in Ecuador for plurinominal elections on the proportion of women elected as mayors. Through an unpublished database, our results show that after the implementation of such legislation, the probability of a woman being elected as mayor almost doubles (ceteris paribus). We also find evidence that a possible causal chain for the documented spillover effects is the increasing importance of female role models, motivated …

This report surveys recent literature on co-operative approaches to improving work and livelihoods in the digital economy, specifically in the gig economy, the tech sector, and digital creative industries. It introduces concepts that update co-operative theory and practice for the digital age, including platform cooperativism, open cooperativism, distributed co-operative organizations, and Exit to Community. It outlines how the co-operative model has been adopted by and for self-employed workers, platform workers, technologists and communication professionals, and data subjects. China’s recent strident and aggressive foreign relations have earned Chinese diplomats the title of “wolf warriors.” These attitudes have been partially excused due to China’s successful response to many recent global crises as compared to Western states. Along with the US struggling to maintain its spheres of influence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, China now poses a real threat to American primacy. How will China balance its newfound confidence with enduring insecurities? Is this “wolf warrior” diplomacy a valid criticism, or just an ignorant foreign perspective on how China should behave?

The discourse of politicians provides us with an important insight into a country’s notion of self and the way in which collective memory is constructed. Through a comparative analysis of speeches performed by Charles de Gaulle and Emmanuel Macron, I will explore the construction of collective memory in France and how this relates to French foreign policy-making.This study will argue that the memory of the Second World War has played a significant role in French foreign policy discourses and show that leaders continue to draw upon the past to justify their policy decisions today, particularly during discourses concerning European integration.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the United States with Chinese Americans being the largest group within the Asian American community (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016; Pew Research Center, 2017). Previous research has found evidence that there is a reluctance in the Chinese-American community to seek mental health services due to a fear of stigma and a tendency to define psychiatric conditions in physical rather than psychological terms. Whether these tendencies differ across generations is another question to explore. The present study investigated the relationship between social media posting behavior and sleep quality in a population of college students (N = 30) over 5 nights. Sleep duration and number of nightly disruptions were used to measure sleep quality using a smartphone app, SleepScore, that participants downloaded prior to the study. Every day after recording their sleep participants were presented with a “prompt word” and asked to make a post related to their respective prompt on the anonymous social media network Yik-Yak. Since its beginnings in the late 1940s, the crime-based media genre has continuously maintained its status as an entertainment favorite, and portrayals of violence and crime in the media have led to an increasingly strong, close relationship between viewers and this type of media. A problem that goes widely undiscussed about this genre is that the perpetrators of these violent crimes are often portrayed as suffering from some mental illness.
