Left, Right, And Center: Women’S Political Incorporation In The Oecd, Christina Xydias Nov 2022

Left, Right, And Center: Women’S Political Incorporation In The Oecd, Christina Xydias

Faculty Contributions to Books

Women’s political incorporation encompasses suffrage as well as election into political office and inclusion in political leadership positions. Standard accounts of political parties’ support for women’s political incorporation differentiate between “the left” and “the right,” expecting that parties viewed left-leaning incorporate more women than those viewed as right-leaning. Drawing from previous research on comparative political institutions, parties, and ideologies, this study argues that we are more likely to find right-leaning parties that have incorporated women at higher rates in some systems than in others. Empirically, this study’s cross-sectional analysis of 281 political parties in 35 OECD member states shows that …

Infrastructure Planning For Equitable Coastal Resilience, Wie Yusuf

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

Summary: The infrastructure planning and implementation process is lengthy in terms of time and resources. In response to an articulated need, proposed solutions are considered and studied, stakeholder support gathered, funding and financing identified, and eventually adopted. There are different equity touchpoints: in the planning and implementation process; in terms of awareness of and ability to pursue projects; and in terms of who pays and who benefits.

ROSA Research Briefs

The past year has been one marked by transition – as a country we have moved from treating COVID-19 as a pandemic to living with it as an endemic disease. Research conducted by the Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) has taken a similar trajectory, expanding the scope of investigations from COVID-19 topics to other areas that are important for the general well-being of older adults in Singapore. This report showcases ROSA’s research involving older Singaporeans and the partnerships that have been forged in the past year. These developments will be presented in two sections. The first outlines the …

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler Nov 2022

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Acculturation attitudes commonly focus on minority and majority attitudes toward minority acculturation. However, because acculturation is a mutual process, not only are members of minority or migrant groups expected to experience acculturation, but members of the majority also are. In this study, I assessed the attitudes of 375 minority and majority students (Mage = 12.67 years, SD = 0.69, range 11–15, 46% female) in Swiss secondary schools toward (a) migration background students’ heritage culture maintenance and (b) dominant culture adoption, (c) majority students’ acquisition of cultural knowledge, and (d) schools’ endorsement of intercultural contact. This study extends the …

Leadership Behavior, Stress, And Presenteeism: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Jan Philipp Czakert, Julia A. M. Reif, Rita Berger Nov 2022

Leadership Behavior, Stress, And Presenteeism: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Jan Philipp Czakert, Julia A. M. Reif, Rita Berger

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Presenteeism is the behavior of working with ill-health. Due to associated productivity losses and substantial transmission risks during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, presenteeism is gaining increased attention in occupational psychological research. To understand the complexity of this phenomenon, research on contextual influences is needed. Our study investigated positive leadership behavior (transformational leadership, TFL) and negative leadership behavior (passive-avoidant leadership, PAL) as social-contextual predictors, next to stress. We hypothesized that in countries with high masculine values, presenteeism is more likely to occur. Our study involved 979 employees from the different cultural contexts of Germany, Ireland, Latvia and Spain that answered an …

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang Nov 2022

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The ecological theory of cultural change suggests that socioeconomic development enhances individualism and weakens collectivism. Yet, collectivism in terms of childcare arrangements seems to persist in rapidly transforming China. It is possible that Confucian ideals and rural to urban migration promoted kin-based cooperation and enhanced collectivism. To explore such possibilities, forty-five caregivers of two generations from an ethnic village located in the Southwest of China were invited to share their childcare arrangements, priorities, and histories. Iterative thematic analyses revealed that improved life quality allowed caregivers the time and resources to attend to children’s personal well-being, whilst socioeconomic potentials and limitations …

Links Between Maternal Emotion Socialization Goals And Practices In An Urban Indian Context, Tripti Kathuria, Shagufa Kapadia, Wolfgang Friedlmeier

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Socialization goals and practices are shifting and changing in countries like India due to modernization, particularly in urban context. Given the shift, mothers may endorse balanced socialization goals over traditional relational goals and that may influence their emotion regulation behavior with the toddlers. This paper aims to test whether mothers’ emotion socialization practices toward their toddlers differ with reference to their socialization goals for both positive and negative socially disengaging and engaging emotions. Fifty mothers of toddlers (M = 25 months) from Vadodara, India, participated in the study. They answered the Emotion Socialization Goals Questionnaire (Chan et al., 2006) …

Issue Of Multicultural People In Globalizing Japan: (Cultural) Identity, Mental Health And “Ibasho”, Kazuyo Suzuki, Michiko Ishibashi, Yumi Suzuki, Fumiteru Nitta Nov 2022

Issue Of Multicultural People In Globalizing Japan: (Cultural) Identity, Mental Health And “Ibasho”, Kazuyo Suzuki, Michiko Ishibashi, Yumi Suzuki, Fumiteru Nitta

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The number of multicultural people has increased over many years with the globalization of the world economy. Japan is no exception. Ibasho is a Japanese unique concept and means one’s place where one feels secure, comfortable, and accepted. There are very few studies on ibasho among people with multicultural backgrounds. Suzuki (2018) refers to relationships among identity/cultural identity formation, mental health (including subjective well-being) and ibasho. In this paper, we examined the relationship among mental health, identity and ibasho with a focus on ibasho in the case of two groups of people with multicultural backgrounds: International students (N = 105) …

News Media Presentation Of Basic Education Teachers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Content Analysis Of The Daily Monitor And The New Vision In Uganda, Andrew Arinaitwe

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

The studies in Uganda on the coverage of basic education teachers in the press are very few and this research went a long way to bridge the gap and to paint a picture of the nature of the coverage of education issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this research were to examine how teacher coverage in the Daily Monitor and the New Vision related with the frames and themes, identify the teacher frames and examine the major themes published. The theoretical framework included the framing theory and the agenda setting theory. The researcher used mixed methods research approach. …

National Forest Visitation Preferences And Avenues To Participation For Urban Hispanic Recreationists In The Portland Metropolitan Area (Usa), Lee Cerveny, Rebecca Mclain, David Banis, Matthew Helmer Nov 2022

National Forest Visitation Preferences And Avenues To Participation For Urban Hispanic Recreationists In The Portland Metropolitan Area (Usa), Lee Cerveny, Rebecca Mclain, David Banis, Matthew Helmer

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Health benefits of outdoor recreation have been broadly demonstrated and land managers recognize the equity implications of providing safe and inclusive outdoor spaces. Data on public lands visitation and outdoor participation show that Hispanic recreationists are less likely to engage in outdoor leisure than White persons. Early studies of outdoor preferences of Hispanic persons identified a desire for large-group settings and social activities. To update our understanding of outdoor recreation needs, preferences, and constraints, we collaborated with a Latinx organization in Portland, Oregon (USA). We collaboratively designed three focus groups that combined structured engagement, cognitive sorting, and participatory mapping to …

Rising From The Flames: How Researching Burnout Impacted Two Academic Librarians, Robert Griggs-Taylor, Jessica Lee Nov 2022

Rising From The Flames: How Researching Burnout Impacted Two Academic Librarians, Robert Griggs-Taylor, Jessica Lee

Georgia Library Quarterly

In 2021, four tenure-track academic librarians surveyed academic library workers who are parents to gauge how parenting affects symptoms of burnout. The COVID-19 pandemic caused an explosion of burnout related literature resulting in an oversaturation of the word in today’s society; however, the authors remain deeply impacted by their research. In this paper, two of those four librarians reflect on the effect that the survey on burnout had on their approaches to management, work, and personal life. Societal pressures to ‘return to normal’ has not alleviated burnout, instead these pressures caused these librarians to reframe their views around what library …

Factors Influencing Bike Share Among Underserved Populations: Evidence From Three Us Cities, Jennifer Dill, Jiahui Ma, Nathan W. Mcneil, Joseph P. Broach, John H. Macarthur Nov 2022

Factors Influencing Bike Share Among Underserved Populations: Evidence From Three Us Cities, Jennifer Dill, Jiahui Ma, Nathan W. Mcneil, Joseph P. Broach, John H. Macarthur

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is evidence that lower-income and people of color (POC) in the U.S. do not use bike share as much as higher-income and white people. Using data from residents living near stations in New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, our analysis examines reasons for these disparities. While smaller shares of POC are members (vs higher-income white people), large shares of POC are interested in bike share. Among POC, having positive attitudes about bicycling and having family and friends that use bike share are strong predictors of interest in bike share. POC are also motivated to use bike share for recreational reasons. …

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: How And Why Academic Librarians Who Are Parents Experience And Combat Burnout At Work, Michael Holt, Amy Chew, Jessica Lee, Robert Taylor Nov 2022

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: How And Why Academic Librarians Who Are Parents Experience And Combat Burnout At Work, Michael Holt, Amy Chew, Jessica Lee, Robert Taylor

Faculty Publications

Academic librarians already wear many hats, juggling a multitude of skills and duties in order to meet the needs of their patrons. When one of those hats is parenthood, however, balancing work and home life can sometimes seem like an insurmountable task. In this chapter we explore how and why academic librarians who are also parents experience burnout, as well as methods used to combat burnout by examining the results of a nationally distributed mixed-methods survey. The survey also addresses practices to combat and prevent burnout, both on a personal and institutional level, and the perceptions of their effectiveness.

Protests And Calls For Boycotting The Qatar World Cup 2022 Spark Online Discussion And Action Away From The Soccer Pitch, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Stephen P. Andon, Bond Benton, Keith Green, Keith Strudler

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Global sporting events regularly spark conversations on issues beyond the playing field, including those at the nexus of sport and geopolitics. This year’s World Cup is no exception, a conversation that began soon after the event was awarded by FIFA to Qatar, a Middle Eastern nation with a population of just over 3 million residents – exponentially smaller than typical hosts of such events – and with a record of exploitative labor systems and a highly questionable human rights record. While this conversation has led to protests and investigative reports on a range of news networks, it has also become …

An Analysis Of Players, Teams And Trends As The World Cup Approaches, Jin-A Choi, Yi Luo, Stephen P. Andon, Bond Benton, Keith Green, Keith Strudler

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

While the World Cup is historically a source of national pride for competing nations, the globalization of the sport of soccer and the expansion of coverage of top soccer leagues from around the world also creates the opportunity for sports fans to build a strong sense of fandom for athletes from around the globe. Therefore, while we would expect fans to cheer for their “home” nation and athletes in the upcoming World Cup, we also recognize that fans may have cheering alliances that reside outside national borders. Using the United States as example, its fans have increasingly chosen favorite teams …

A Preview Of Post Amnesty Twitter: Analysis Of “Groomer” On Twitter After The Colorado Springs Shooting, Bond Benton, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Keith Strudler, Keith Green

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

On November 24, 2022 Elon Musk stated that “general amnesty” would be given to Twitter accounts previously suspended for violent threats, harassment and misinformation. This appears to reflect Musk’s previously stated intent to run the platform as a “free speech absolutist.” The question in many people’s minds is what such an incarnation of Twitter will look like. The tragic shooting at an LGBTQIA+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Nov. 19-20 and the reaction the event generated on the platform provide a case that demonstrates the tensions that will come with reduced platform moderation. “Groomer,” a previously Twitter restricted slur …

Mobility Interrupted: A New Framework For Understanding Anti-Left Sentiment Among Brazil’S “Once-Rising Poor”, Benjamin Junge, Sean T. Mitchell, Charles H. Klein, Matthew Spearly

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

How do sequences of upward and downward socioeconomic mobility influence political views among those who have “risen” or “fallen” during periods of leftist governance? While existing studies identify a range of factors, long-term mobility trajectories have been largely unexplored. The question has particular salience in contemporary Brazil, where, after a decade of extraordinary poverty reduction on the watch of the leftist Workers’ Party (PT), a subsequent period of economic and political crises intensified anti-PT sentiment. This article uses original data from the 2016 Brazil’s Once-Rising Poor (BORP) Survey, using a 3-city sample of 822 poor and working-class Brazilians to analyze …
