Digital Commons Data: For Your Institution's Rdm Journey, Luca Belletti

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Building a research data management program is more than ever essential for any medical research institution. The desire to align with FAIR principles, to comply with funders' mandates, to curate, to showcase, and to archive their research output requires institutions to be intentional about how they manage their research data throughout its journey.

As an institution's research output increasingly becomes the accepted demonstration of its academic credentials, Institutional Repository practitioners are looking for ways to facilitate collaboration, publication, and preservation of their institution's research data.

This presentation illustrates the ways the Digital Commons Data platform helps medical researchers maximize the …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

4Science is designing a repository for a multi-institutional health system dedicated to medical research. The idea, promoted by a consortium of healthcare and health research institutions, will operate on the initial basis of the library network of these institutions. The idea of the project, which draws its foundations from the DSpace-CRIS platform, is to create a repository in which the libraries are interconnected and can thus share the repository infrastructure.

With this presentation, 4Science intends to expose and share the issues and opportunities that have arisen from working with such a large and complicated infrastructure as the Italian health system …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

The U.S. Repository Network is an initiative of SPARC with support from the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR). In its "Modernizing the Global Repository Network Initiative," COAR identified the need for assistance in breaking down institutional silos and developing a more cohesive approach and greater collaboration around repositories in the U.S. Through a Visiting Program Officer, SPARC engaged an expert group of library/repository professionals as well as the broader U.S. repository community to develop a strategic vision for U.S. repositories. This strategic vision is informing the development of an action plan for the U.S. Repository Network (USRN). The USRN …

Surveying The Medical Ir Landscape For Presentation Or Publication: Challenges And Opportunities, Ramune K. Kubilius Nov 2022

Surveying The Medical Ir Landscape For Presentation Or Publication: Challenges And Opportunities, Ramune K. Kubilius

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

The medical institutional repository landscape is ever evolving and presents challenges for anyone who wishes to research it for presentation or publication. Librarians are one of the central stakeholders in the medical IR world, but not all librarians may be equally immersed in this area. Those who are directly involved may research and report on use cases and institution or platform-specific IR scenarios. Yet, it can be argued that in many instances, there is an important reason for introductory material on the "world of medical institutional repositories", in providing background and context. No matter one's job title or responsibilities, there …

Public Services Faculty Presentations

As critical educators and learners, we continually encounter a changing information landscape necessitating (re)considerations of our responsibilities as consumers and producers of knowledge. This workshop offers a window into a High Impact Teaching Seminar created by librarians and educational developers at the University of Rhode Island to intentionally integrate accessible Information Literacy (IL) skills for all students. Through a reflective exploration of IL threshold concepts such as scholarly conversation, authority, information creation, and strategic exploration, participants will learn about the seminar’s theoretical framework and structure, engage in sample activities, and consider possible applications at their own institutions.

Exploring The Relationship Between Medical Research Literacy And Respondents’ Expressed Likelihood To Participate In A Clinical Trial, Jennifer Dykema, Cameron Jones, Dana Garbarski, Mia Farias, Dorothy Farrar Edwards

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Medical research literacy (MRL) is a facet of health literacy that measures a person’s understanding of informed consent and other aspects of participation in medical research. While existing research on MRL is limited, there are reasons to believe MRL may be associated with a willingness to participate in medical research. We use data from a racially balanced sample of survey respondents (n = 410): (1) to analyze how MRL scores vary by respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics; (2) to examine how MRL relates to respondents’ expressed likelihood to participate in a clinical trial; and (3) to provide considerations on the measurement of …

A Hermeneutic Exploration Of The Meaning Of School Counseling For Undocumented Students Attempting To Receive Equitable College Access, Victoria Lauren Landi Nov 2022

A Hermeneutic Exploration Of The Meaning Of School Counseling For Undocumented Students Attempting To Receive Equitable College Access, Victoria Lauren Landi

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study examines what school counseling means to undocumented students attempting equitable college access. Critical Race Theory is the theoretical basis guiding this study. Much literature on undocumented youth and educational attainment suggests undocumented youth are not receiving an equitable public education and continue falling further into society's margins. However, research has not yet captured how undocumented youth experience college access from their school counselors. The gap in the research elucidates the research questions that drove this study regarding how undocumented students explain the meaning of equitable college access from their interactions with school counselors and how undocumented youth …

Property Tax And School Choice In Pennsylvania K-12 Education, David William Scott Bolton Nov 2022

Property Tax And School Choice In Pennsylvania K-12 Education, David William Scott Bolton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

For many years now, Pennsylvanian lawmakers have debated the merits of changing the funding method of public schools, with the elimination of property taxes drawing headlines in the media but never being realized through legislative amendments to the school funding formulas. Still today, legislation is being proposed to eliminate property tax as a funding source. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is demographic or geographic support for these efforts among those who budget and utilize these funds: school board members. The theoretical framework employed will be that of social choice theory. A survey was conducted among …

Teaching Time; Disrupting Common Sense, Kevin Birth Nov 2022

Teaching Time; Disrupting Common Sense, Kevin Birth

Publications and Research

In my course “Time” I set out to disrupt the connection between cognitive tools used to represent time (clocks and calendars) and experiences of time. This article documents some of the topics and pedagogical methods I use: using unusual due dates for assignments, making the clock look strange, disrupting the idea of “now,” showing how clocks cultivate gullibility, exploring the different hour systems of the past, criticizing clock-based logics used in primatological research, explaining the theory of special relativity, and exploring the political and economic consequences of sleep loss.

A Public Administration Study Of Ohio's Declining Abortion Rate, Brandel Denise Boyd

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

OBJECTIVES: More than 8,000 fewer abortions were reported to the Ohio Department of Health in 2019 than in 2009. And yet, little research has been conducted to indicate what factors most influence this drop. Due to these shortcomings within the literature on abortion, the researcher used a mixed methods approach to discover answers to the following two questions: Have abortion rates changed in Ohio from 2009-2019, if so, how? As well as, what major factors have influenced the decline in the number of abortions within the state of Ohio from 2009 to 2019? STUDY DESIGN: The researcher utilized a mixed …

The Keynesian Stimulus Model: Stimulating Economic Activities With Stimulus Payments, Christopher Osuoha Nov 2022

The Keynesian Stimulus Model: Stimulating Economic Activities With Stimulus Payments, Christopher Osuoha

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Governments use cash transfers as a fiscal measure to stimulate economic activities during shocks. As COVID-19 continues to ravage economies globally, governments worldwide have responded with fiscal and monetary policies to manage its economic impact. In addition, the U.S government has intervened with direct transfers to provide liquidity to prevent a prolonged shock. However, opinions are divided on the efficacy of the Keynesian stimulus policy to generate enough of a multiplier to stimulate economic activities compared to the monetarist approach. This study analyzes the classical Keynesian model and compares it with the monetarist model to provide insight for policymakers into …

Vicarious Healing: Integration Of Faith And Practice, Yolanda R. Montgomery Nov 2022

Vicarious Healing: Integration Of Faith And Practice, Yolanda R. Montgomery

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Several studies have evaluated the emotional burden added to therapists who are treating traumatized individuals. However, little research has been done to determine how to mitigate the secondary trauma in clinicians within the therapeutic environment during counseling sessions. An exploration of change theory can be applied to understand why secular therapists experience resilience and growth at different times or not at all. However, this intersection lacks a spiritual component that is present for Christian therapists to heal from this trauma during in-person sessions. The present study aims to explore this intersection of change theory with posttraumatic growth and vicarious resilience. …

Bidirectional Leader-Member Exchange And The Impact On Middle Manager Job Satisfaction, Brian A. Collera Nov 2022

Bidirectional Leader-Member Exchange And The Impact On Middle Manager Job Satisfaction, Brian A. Collera

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Leader-member exchange (LMX) theory focuses on the quality of the relationship between a leader and member. LMX is associated with a number of positive member outcomes, but LMX research has largely neglected what, if any, positive benefits leaders attain from high quality relationships beyond better team performance. The purpose of this study was to apply the LMX theory to middle managers in organizations. Middle managers inherently balance the competing interests of multidirectional relationships, acting as both a leader and a member in the organizational hierarchy. This study explored how middle manager’s self-rating of LMX (relationship with their subordinates), leader-leader exchange …

Childhood Adversities And The Impact On Development, Karey Womack Dulaney

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Experiences in life are crucial in determining how one’s development will progress throughout their lifespan, with many of the factors occurring in early childhood. The factors include but are not limited to adversities experienced at an early age, toxic stress, and childhood trauma. Childhood adversities can impact a child’s cognitive development and biological systems. Children living in adverse situations are at a greater risk of not reaching their full developmental potential in life. Although previous research and literature discuss and demonstrate the cruciality of early childhood interventions to mitigate adverse childhood experiences, gaps in the research exist for individual interventions, …
