This study examined the effects of grit and depressive symptoms on academic engagement and self-esteem among undergraduate students. Participants consisted of undergraduate psychology students and were categorized into high and low levels of grit and depression groups based on scores from self-report measures of these variables. Academic motivation, academic satisfaction, and self-esteem were the dependent variables. A two (grit: high vs. low) by two (depression: high vs. low) factorial ANOVA was conducted to examine the significant main effect for depression and grit on self-esteem. Participants with more depressive symptoms reported lower self-esteem, as did participants with higher levels of grit. …

Jurors’ decision-making is shaped by social and psychological factors that may create bias, particularly in cases involving psychopathic defendants. The present study examines how a hypothetical defendant’s perceived psychopathy, the type of scientific evidence presented (neuroimaging vs. only verbal descriptions), the gender of the expert witness, and the expert’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) affect jurors’ decisions. Participants read one of four mock trial vignettes involving a psychopathic defendant and then evaluated the defendant’s guilt, recommended sentence length, and weighed the credibility of the expert witness. Overlooking the bank of Second Creek near Natchez, Mississippi, the Mazique (22AD502) site is a Coles Creek period (AD 750-1000) mound and plaza center that once featured three mounds surrounding an open central plaza. Mounds A and B still sit prominently along the southern and eastern edges of Mazique’s plaza. The location of  Mound C remains unclear. Historic agricultural and construction activities have left no visible trace of the monument. The 2021 University of Southern Mississippi archaeological field school set out to investigate potential locations for Mound C and to explore the site's functionality.

The real or potential presence of contaminants at these sites often deters investors due to costly cleanup requirements (EPA, n.d. -b). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through its Brownfield Revitalization Program, implemented guidelines for covering the costs and labor associated with the remediation of these properties. Languages vary in how they signal the presence of an embedded clause. Both English and Spanish use what are termed complementizers—that in English and que in Spanish—but in English, the complementizer is often optional while in Spanish, it is generally required. This thesis tested if the presence of que in a Spanish sentence could induce a bilingual speaker to insert a previously omitted that into an English sentence using a syntactic priming task. The results of these trials showed that this was the case, finding a statistically significant priming effect, supporting the idea that syntax is cognitively shared across languages …

Collegiate athletes’ mental health is on the decline, and they have unique experiences that can influence the prevalence of mental health struggles. This study examined academic anxiety, comorbid forms of anxiety, and predicting factors in 187 collegiate student-athletes across 29 U.S. colleges. Athletes had significantly higher levels of academic anxiety and general anxiety compared to a college nonathlete population. There were significant gender differences in athletes, with females having greater levels of anxiety sensitivity, academic anxiety, sport anxiety, general anxiety, depression, and a history of depression than male athletes. Gender, history of depression, anxiety sensitivity, and depression were significant predictors …

Latinx LGBTQ+ adults experience poor health due to exposure to intersectional discrimination; however, they also possess protective factors to cope with these stressors. This study explored the associations and interactions of identity affirmation (ethnic, American, LGBTQ+), identity outness, perceived social support, LGBT-POC microaggressions, and health among LGBTQ+ Latinx adults. Correlational analyses and regression models controlling for covariates showed that American and ethnic identity affirmation, perceived social support, and identity outness were positively associated with health, and LGBT-POC microaggressions were negatively associated with health. LGBTQ+ identity affirmation was directly correlated with mental health, but not in the regression model. Identity affirmation …

This dissertation comprises of two papers. In the first paper, co-opted board members, those appointed after the CEO assumes office, are poor monitors and, contrary to prior assumptions, ineffective advisors. I show that board co-option is associated with suboptimal merger and acquisition (M&A) decisions, adverse deal characteristics, and lower acquirer’s short- and long term returns and operating performance. These results are robust to the use of propensity score matching, entropy balancing, Instrumental variable using 2SLS, and difference-in-differences to address selection bias and endogeneity. Deep distortions occur when a person remembers multiple incompatible reality states as true, producing logical impossibilities. Those impossibilities include violations of basic logical principles such as additivity, countable additivity, and universal event. Previously, deep distortions have been detected in experiments using word lists and using real-world facts. We report two experiments in which we extend these findings to realistic pictures that figure prominently in legal cases. In Experiment 1, we presented participants with images of celebrity faces and asked them true or false questions about their identities, which were either conventional probes (e.g., "This is Alexander Hamilton") or disjunctive probes …

Based on observation, personal interaction, and informal interviews/linguistic judgements, this thesis presents the unique and asymmetrical grammaticality patterns of the terms Girl and Miss Girl. To account for these asymmetries, I provide a syntactic framework rooted in Minimalism and Rizzi’s (1997) expanded CP hypothesis, alongside a pragmatic explanation based on Barros and Frank’s (2023) attentional maintenance and attentional shift paradigm.

Racial injustices have at times left individuals and their families stranded with little hope for a solution when dealing with exonerations for criminal convictions. This was the case for Sabrina Butler, a young Black mother from Mississippi, who was convicted in 1989 of murdering her nine-month-old son after he stopped breathing and she attempted to resuscitate him. Butler was only 17 years old at the time, and she was sentenced to death and spent over five years in prison, two of those years being on death row. This study aims to provide a critical and in-depth analysis of Western media coverage of the Gaza War (2023–2024) through a comparative content analysis of three major international news channels: BBC, CNN, and Fox News, across three consecutive time phases. This study examines positive youth development (PYD) within youth sports governance, specifically USA Swimming's Local Swimming Committee (LSC) boards of directors, a context largely overlooked in PYD research, which typically focuses on on-field experiences.

Using the "Big Three" PYD framework (positive youth-adult relationships, life skill-building opportunities, and youth leadership and contribution), the study employed an explanatory mixed methods design. A quantitative survey was distributed to LSC athlete and non-athlete board members, followed by semi-structured interviews.

Survey data from 27 athletes and 157 non-athletes revealed strong levels of all "Big Three" components across both groups. Statistical analyses found no significant differences …

In my dissertation, I study credit access in diverse urban communities, the role of the financial institutions that serve them, such as Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) and non-MDIs. The first chapter studies the effect of bank branch closures (both MDIs and non-MDIs) on credit access in these diverse urban communities. MDIs are US community banks that are owned and operated by minority populations, such as Black-owned, Asian-owned, Hispanic-owned banks or Native-owned banks. Math anxiety impacts people at all ages, from early elementary school into adulthood (for review see Ramirez et al., 2018). In these studies, we investigated the cognitive impact that math anxiety has on both children and adults by measuring their math anxiety and reaction time on two tasks. In this master’s thesis, I collected and analayzed data from 429 participants, 78 of whom reported having experience with parental infidelity, namely having at least one parent be sexually unfaithful to the other. The purpose of this study was to better understand the long-term impacts of experiencing parental infidelity during childhood.
