“For Posterity, It’S Something Important To Do”: Festivals, Digital Practices, And Conserving Community Heritage, Enya Moore Dr. Jan 2023

“For Posterity, It’S Something Important To Do”: Festivals, Digital Practices, And Conserving Community Heritage, Enya Moore Dr.

Presentations

This presentation highlights the importance of preserving arts festival activities and uses empirical evidence to underline the significance of the digital turn for archiving this kind of intangible heritage. As Del Barrio et al (2012, pp. 235) argue, cultural festivals are an emblematic example of immaterial cultural heritage, 'since they are experience goods which expire at the moment they are produced and not only express artistic innovations in the field but also draw on previous cultural background, perceived as accumulated cultural capital’ . Data gathered through qualitative fieldwork with rural festival makers are used to explore the potential that digitising …

Racialization Of Muslim Students In Australia, Ireland, And The United States: Cross-Cultural Perspectives, Melanie C. Brooks, Miriam D. Ezzani Miriam D. Ezzani, Youcef Sai, Fida Sanjakdar

Journal Articles

The purpose of this qualitative cross-cultural case study was to better understand how Muslim students living in Australia, Ireland, and the United States navigated racism to identify ways in which school leaders and teachers can better address the structural, historical, and socioeconomic roots of racial injustice, discrimination, and ongoing oppression. Data collection was guided by a shared interview protocol that asked questions regarding family background, personal interests, identity, and friendships with a focus on their experiences of anti-Muslim racism in secondary schools. Findings suggested that Muslim students navigated racialization by (de)constructing their Muslimness, seeking voice, navigating between inclusion and exclusion, …

Two Essays On Industrial Hemp Firms In The United States, Abraham Olakunle Ajibade

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

After a long absence from American fields, industrial hemp was reintroduced to growing fields starting with state pilot programs in 2014 and received the green light for commercial cultivation in the US through the 2018 Farm Bill. Being an industry in its resurgence, investment is crucial for growth and the stock market and over-the-counter markets help US hemp firms get these much-needed funds for growth and expansion. This thesis consists of two essays on US hemp firms.

The first essay uses descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and the Kruskal-Wallis Test to investigate how US hemp stocks compare to mid-cap and large-cap …

Technical Analyses On The Materials From 2011-2017 Fieldwork At La 20,000 La Cienega, New Mexico, Heather Trigg, Anya Gruber, Ana Opishinski, Clint Lindsay, Katherine Albert

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

LA 20,000 is a 17th -century site associated with Spanish colonizers. It is the largest, most complex of the few 17th -century Spanish ranches in New Mexico that have thus far been excavated. Located 12 miles southwest of Santa Fe (Figure 1.1), the site is owned by the nonprofit living history museum El Rancho de las Golondrinas although structures associated with the ranch are also located on adjacent property to the north and to the south of the core of the site. Dendrochronology and material culture suggest the ranch was established by 1629 and destroyed in 1680 during the Pueblo …

Global virtual team (GVT) members’ inability to effectively build trust and communication has the potential to negatively impact organizational outcomes. Organizational leaders are concerned with team members’ inability to build trust and communication, as it is the leading cause of reduced productivity and efficiency levels within GVTs. Grounded in the social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies GVT leaders use to improve trust and communication among GVT members. The participants were 18 GVT business leaders from six organizations located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Data were collected using semistructured …

Harsh Creditor Remedies And The Role Of The Redeemer, Christopher D. Hampson Jan 2023

Harsh Creditor Remedies And The Role Of The Redeemer, Christopher D. Hampson

UF Law Faculty Publications

The concept of the judgment-proof or collection-proof debtor is fundamental to our understanding of civil law and of what distinguishes it from criminal law. But when civil creditors can threaten unduly harsh or cruel debt collection measures (whether legally or not), they extend their reach into the pockets of those whom this Article calls “redeemers,” third parties with a familial or quasi-familial relationship to civil debtors who have reason to pay on their behalf. This Article examines four such measures—imprisonment, homelessness, destitution, and deportation—remedies that sound like they come from another time and place, but which are threatened by some …

Exploring Parents' Knowledge Of Dark Design And Its Impact On Children's Digital Well-Being, Claire Bessant, Luei Lin Ong, Laurel Aynne Cook, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, Beatriz Pereira, Alexa Fox, Emma Nottingham, Stacey Steinberg, Pingping Gan

UF Law Faculty Publications

Dark design (also known as deceptive design; Colin et al., 2018 and dark patterns; Mathur et al., 2019) is evidenced by “a user interface carefully crafted to trick users into doing things they might not otherwise do” (Brignull, 2022; page 1). Much dark design is constructed with monetization as the primary goal- even in spaces without ecommerce design (e.g., free-to-play apps representing >95% of all mobile apps; Fitton et al. 2021). Many recent dark design strategies are also oriented towards collecting user information. Concerns about children’s vulnerability to inappropriate online marketing and economic fraud, and the impact of organisational data …

The Impact Of Single Vs. Poly Victimization By Maltreatment Type On Pre-Treatment Ptsd Scores, Ashley G. O'Donnell, Sabrina Dicarlo, Arazais D. Oliveros

CAS Publications

Studies show that an estimated 21-50% of children who have experienced maltreatment will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within their lifetime (Schuck & Widom 2019). Research suggests that the type and number of exposures to trauma may influence symptom severity. Further, trauma symptom scores of children who experienced child sexual abuse (CSA) were higher among the children who endorsed poly-victimization, meaning when CSA was combined with another form of maltreatment (Racine et al 2022). This study seeks to examine the impact of poly-victimization and combined types of maltreatment on children’s PTSD scores in an archival dataset from a child advocacy …

Inspirational And Worthy Of Charity: (Mis)Representations Of Disability In Sport Media, Katherine Holland, Steven K. Holland, Justin A. Haegele

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

This study explored how one United States-based sports media company (SMC) represents disability through their Twitter account. A directed content analysis approach was utilized to analyze the tweets of the SMC for calendar year 2019. Of 6080 tweets reviewed, 126 (2.1%) were determined to represent disabled athletes or individuals. 43 (34.1%) tweets represented disabled athletes or individuals in participant roles while 83 (65.9%) represented disabled individuals in spectator or nonathlete roles. The tweets were coded into one of four categories of disability portrayal (Garland-Thomson, 2002): wonderous (n = 73), sentimental (n = 43), realistic (n = 7), …

Perceptions Of The Grant Decision-Making Process: A Study Of Foundation Grantmakers And Grant Seekers Who Focus On Youth Violence In Chicago, Illinois, Patiya Freely

Dissertations

Local partners like churches, schools, and community organizations are often at the front lines of addressing the problem of recurring deadly violence against Black urban youth. Foundation grants are frequently used to fund their work. While foundations annually award millions of dollars in grants to community-based organizations addressing youth violence, there is little detailed information available about the foundation grantmaking decision-making process. Notably, there is a lack of research on the determinants of the grant decision-making process that may inadvertently affect grantee outcomes and ultimately the of beneficiary organizations and communities.A sample of ten decision-makers who had funded or sought …

Genrefication: Making Children's Collections Accessible, Kurt Axt Jan 2023

Genrefication: Making Children's Collections Accessible, Kurt Axt

Resources for Educators

[From Introduction]

Most people who have home libraries have no need to classify their collections. They have one or maybe several bookcases, perhaps separating fiction from nonfiction, grouping fiction by genre or format, nonfiction by subject. They may even keep their Outlander books together and not mix them up with their Alex Cross books. But only a rare bird would alphabetize their fiction by author or organize their nonfiction by the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress (LC) classification systems. Likewise, if their small child has a bookcase in his or her bedroom, it is probably an unsorted mass of …

The Carceral State Of American Schools: The Impact Of Symbolic Threat Of Public School Policy, Noe Alexander Aguado, Justin J. Joseph Jan 2023

The Carceral State Of American Schools: The Impact Of Symbolic Threat Of Public School Policy, Noe Alexander Aguado, Justin J. Joseph

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

The fear of violence in schools has compelled school systems to use a variety of authoritarian methods to control students' behavior. This work seeks to understand why these methods of behavioral control are used in some schools but not in others. Using the school survey on crime and safety, the authors explore the extent that the behavioral control strategies at diverse schools are more reminiscent of correctional facilities than institutions of learning. This analysis offers a nuanced view of the carceral elements in schools, where student body diversity is linked to some aspects of the carceral state but not others. …

Hiring Discrimination In Denmark, Sweden, And Iceland: A Comparative Study Of Ukrainian And Afghan Job Applicants, Annika Brown

Economics Honors Papers

This paper investigates the labor market discrimination faced by job applicants from Afghanistan and Ukraine, using a correspondence test. Specifically, we examine the impact of nationality, gender, skill, and industry on positive responses from potential employers in Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden using a linear probability model. We used popular names in Afghanistan and Ukraine to create resumes that implied particular nationalities and included previous job experience in Kabul and Kyiv. Although the sample size of positive responses in Sweden and Iceland was too small to draw conclusions, employers in Denmark responded to 28 percent of the applications. For a Ukrainian, …

Mental Health Experiences Of Black Males Beyond Juvenile Delinquency, Jasmine D. Spratling Jan 2023

Mental Health Experiences Of Black Males Beyond Juvenile Delinquency, Jasmine D. Spratling

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Incarceration rates around the United States continue to increase for Black male adolescents. These numbers are even more significant in Atlanta, where youth spend time in juvenile detention centers and return soon once released. Summary findings from existing research showed the lack of mental health services provided once a youth has been released from incarceration, but a lack of specifics around the services needed remains. The purpose of the current study was to explore the experiences of Black male adolescents who received little to no trauma informed care post-incarceration. A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used to conduct semistructured interviews with …

How Police Investigators View Credibility Of Victims Of Sexual Assault Crimes, Lakesha Richele Boone Jan 2023

How Police Investigators View Credibility Of Victims Of Sexual Assault Crimes, Lakesha Richele Boone

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sexual assault is a sensitive topic, and research has become increasingly popular. Most literature focuses on stigma, attitudes, and perceptions that victims and law enforcement have about each other. Law enforcement officers are responsible for making charging decisions based on their investigations and ways by which they determine credibility and reliability of victims. It was unclear what criteria law enforcement officers use to ascertain relevant flaws in victim character and credibility. The purpose of this study was to explore how law enforcement officers evaluate credibility of sexual assault victims during investigations. The feminist legal, just world, and rape myth acceptance …

The Human-Canine Bond: Levels Of Stress Among Military Spouses During Deployments, Angela L. De Leon-Muniz Jan 2023

The Human-Canine Bond: Levels Of Stress Among Military Spouses During Deployments, Angela L. De Leon-Muniz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has found that deployment may impact military spouses’ emotional wellbeing and attachment with family members. There remains a critical gap in the literature regarding difference in stress levels between military spouses who own canines and those who do not. The theoretical foundations for this study were Bowlby’s attachment theory and Bowen’s family systems theory. Research questions included exploring the relationships between (a) pet canine ownership, deployment length of time, and military spouses’ stress levels, and (b) pet canine owners’ pet attachment and stress experienced, when their significant others are deployed. The sample comprised 82 spouses with deployed military …

Vicarious Trauma And Elementary School Counselors, Erin M. Duduit Jan 2023

Vicarious Trauma And Elementary School Counselors, Erin M. Duduit

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Vicarious trauma has been a focus of scholars for many years and demonstrates that vicarious trauma effects professional behaviorally, personally, and physiologically. This quantitative cross-sectional study explored the relationship between vicarious trauma and occupational exposure (caseload size) disrupting the cognitive structures of empathy, control, and esteem. The theoretical framework for this study was the constructivist self-development theory, which described how helping professionals develop vicarious trauma after exposure to traumatic stories. The social cognitive theory was also used for this study, explaining how elementary school counselors can increase their capacity for empathizing through modeling and experiencing empathy from others. The study …

The Correlation Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Pornography Consumption In Adulthood, Branden Henry Jan 2023

The Correlation Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Pornography Consumption In Adulthood, Branden Henry

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Over the past 25 years, significant research has gone into understanding how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) correlate with a variety of negative health and behavioral outcomes, while at the same time, pornography consumption has increased dramatically. However, limited research has been done to understand whether a relationship exists between ACEs and pornography consumption. Attachment theory, which was used as the theoretical framework for this study, includes the idea that childhood experiences play a major role in a person’s development of various behaviors throughout life, including coping mechanisms like pornography consumption. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study was to …

Managers' Experiences Coordinating Peer Mediation Programs In Schools, Ingrid Jeannis Jan 2023

Managers' Experiences Coordinating Peer Mediation Programs In Schools, Ingrid Jeannis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractPeer mediation (PM) programs implemented in schools promote resolution of disputes and conflicts among peers. Several benefits have been associated with young children involved in these programs including reductions in physical aggression, as well as learning skills involving communication, problem solving, and decision making. While positive outcomes have been observed, less was known about manager experiences involving coordinating PM programs. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore manager thoughts and experiences regarding their roles in PM programs and how they perceived strengths and weaknesses of these programs. The social learning theory was the theoretical framework for this study. …

Examining Mental Health Literacy As A Predictor Of Mental Health Service Utilization Among Florida Foster Parents, Adam Johnson Jan 2023

Examining Mental Health Literacy As A Predictor Of Mental Health Service Utilization Among Florida Foster Parents, Adam Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The focus of this study was to examine mental health literacy as a predictor of the mental health service utilization of foster parents after controlling for age. There is an absence of research addressing variables that contribute to the use of mental health services by foster parents. In this nonexperimental study, survey data were collected in an electronic format. Statistical analysis was performed through use of a logistic regression. A mental health literacy conceptual framework was the theoretical foundation of the study. The sample consisted of 42 foster parents from the northwest panhandle of Florida. The study yielded findings indication …

The Effect Of Federal And State-Level Policy On Undocumented Childhood Arrivals, Kim Kaczmarowski Jan 2023

The Effect Of Federal And State-Level Policy On Undocumented Childhood Arrivals, Kim Kaczmarowski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) provides a 2-year reprieve from deportation and a work permit for eligible undocumented childhood arrivals. It does not provide a pathway to citizenship or confer rights or protections enjoyed by those with permanent legal status leaving recipients in a constant state of legal limbo. State-level policy can mitigate or exacerbate obstacles faced by this population. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how federal and state-level policy in a conservative location shaped experiences of membership or exclusion. Responses were examined using segmented assimilation theory to identify layered contexts of reception. The …

Lived Experience Of Caregiver Burden Among Black Family Caregivers Caring For Ill Family Members During Covid-19, Lisa King

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBlack family caregivers have had to deal with many challenges while caring for ill family members during COVID-19. Black family caregivers have been burdened with caring for family members for generations, often without proper supervision, training, or support. In December 2019 Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, changed the world. The impact of COVID-19 on the American population has created many difficulties for Black family caregivers and their family members, including limited support, isolation, and financial disparities. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was exploring the caregiver burden among Black family caregivers during COVID-19. The research question for this study …

Mindfulness Skills And Retention Risk In First-Generation Undergraduate Students, Tim Morenz Jan 2023

Mindfulness Skills And Retention Risk In First-Generation Undergraduate Students, Tim Morenz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

First-generation college students experience more negative emotional states and higher stress levels than their continuing generation peers, take approximately two years longer to complete undergraduate degree programs, and are less than one percent likely to re-enroll in college. Mindfulness skills have been reported to alleviate anxiety and stress, improve adjustment to college, and improve academic performance, but a gap in the literature existed specific to first-generation college students. Guided by the theory of planned behavior and the monitor and acceptance theory, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between trait mindfulness skills and retention risk in …

Microaggressions Against Ethnic Individuals From Minorities In Counseling, Joan Morton Jan 2023

Microaggressions Against Ethnic Individuals From Minorities In Counseling, Joan Morton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractEven though the current literature addresses racial microaggressions among ethnic minority people and implications for counseling, no qualitative research that included the voices of ethnic minority individuals was found. Researchers have not fully addressed the prevalence of racial microaggressions in counseling sessions. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to explore the lived encounters of ethnic minorities concerning racial microaggressions in counseling. The study issue was analyzed through the lens of critical race theory. Four participants were recruited from the Walden University participation pool. Data were selected through semi-structure interviews and narrative analysis was used to analyze data to …

Moral Injury Themes Involving Criminal Recklessness Among Adults With Alcohol Use Disorder, Sandra Starch Jan 2023

Moral Injury Themes Involving Criminal Recklessness Among Adults With Alcohol Use Disorder, Sandra Starch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Moral injury (MI) can emerge following transgressive acts against one’s deeply held moral beliefs. Its symptomology involves individual psychological, spiritual, behavioral, and social spheres. It has primarily been studied within the military and in a few select civilian populations. This descriptive phenomenological study involved exploring MI themes among adults with alcohol use disorder (AUD) who had engaged in criminally reckless acts. Data collected from semi-structured interviews with eight participants were coded and analyzed, leading to six major themes revealing the symptomology of MI. Responses from study participants supported Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance via their descriptions of alcohol abuse cycles …
