Embodying Arts Festivals As Infrastructural Transformation Of Places, Bernadette Quinn
Embodying Arts Festivals As Infrastructural Transformation Of Places, Bernadette Quinn
Books/Book chapters
Arts festivals are important forms of cultural production and consumption (Négrier 2015). Irrespective of genre (e.g., visual arts, music or film) and whether single or multidisciplinary, their primary endeavour is to engage people in the making, showcasing and performance of art. Yet arts festivals do not necessarily receive recognition or attention based on their cultural attributes alone. Festivals and events have become “central to entrepreneurial cities’ efforts to generate commerce, regenerate place and stand out on the highly competitive global stage” (Quinn et al. 2020, 1875). Along with arts and cultural activities more generally, recent decades have seen cities use …
The Value Of The Serious Leisure Perspective In Understanding Cultural Capital Embodiment In Festival Settings, Giulia Ressetti, Bernadette Quinn
The Value Of The Serious Leisure Perspective In Understanding Cultural Capital Embodiment In Festival Settings, Giulia Ressetti, Bernadette Quinn
Presentations
Festivals have been conceptualised as serious leisure activities as well as arenas for cultural capital acquisition and embodiment. However, there is still theoretical confusion surrounding the process of cultural embodiment, especially in leisure practices. This paper suggests that the serious leisure perspective, in combination with cultural capital ideas, offer a means of deepening understanding of how cultural capital can be embodied in festival settings. To make its arguments, the paper draws on qualitative data collected at two long-established literary festivals, one in Ireland and one in Italy. Observations and interviews with festival participants were used to develop an understanding of …

TU Dublin Library Services has a holistic approach to our students’ needs. With that in mind we have begun to develop the library garden on our Tallaght campus for the use of both students and staff. This show and tell will show our progress so far and include what we want to achieve in the future. Sustainability is part of the University’s strategic intent and is to the fore in this project. With some success growing fruit and veg we hope to expand this going forward. In essence, we want to create a calming sensory space to be in, which …

Reconstituting Digital Counterpublics In Times Of Crisis: The Case Of The United States And The Republic Of Georgia, Byron B. Craig, Stephen E. Rahko, Nathan Carpenter
Faculty Publications - Communications
Since the advent of social media at the turn of the 21st century, scholars of communication, cultural studies, and media studies have long been invested in the question of the relationship between social media platforms and the discursive formation of counterpublics for social movement mobilization. In this article, we seek to pose a new question for scholarly inquiry: How do citizens leverage the tools of social media platforms to reconstitute counterpublics in times of crisis? Toward this end, we conduct a comparative case study of the way citizens leverage platforms for counterpublic formation in the Republic of Georgia and the …

National-Local Dissonance And Exacerbated Vulnerabilities: Covid-19 And Ph Governmental Response, Maria Elissa J. Lao, Pilar Preciousa P. Berse
Political Science Department Faculty Publications
The chasm between good and bad governance widens during times of prolonged crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic proved how well-governed countries could climb out of the initial waves of infection while others struggled or failed to provide substantial efforts to curb the disease. Vulnerable groups such as women, youth, children, the elderly, poor households, as well as communities that depend on the informal economy, with limited access to social and health services, are made even more vulnerable because of the uncertainties brought by the pandemic. Even non-traditional vulnerable groups such as migrant workers and locally stranded individuals have become vulnerable due …

Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Humans have long been interested in relations among religion/spirituality (R/S), positive psychological constructs, and physical health. Furthermore, many religions attempt to influence behavior through health-related prescriptions about food choices, sexual activity, substance use, and resting. Similarly, positive psychological constructs have been discussed in light of their presumed benefits on both mental and physical health (Ryff & Singer, 1998). However, R/S and positive psychological constructs have only recently become objects of scientific investigation of their associations with physical health.
The Impact Of Unemployment And Female Labor Force Participation On Sex-Specific Suicide Rates Across U.S. States, 1979-2020, Jeffrey T. Lewis
The Impact Of Unemployment And Female Labor Force Participation On Sex-Specific Suicide Rates Across U.S. States, 1979-2020, Jeffrey T. Lewis
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Using pooled cross-sectional state-level data from 1979-2020 to analyze the effects of economic conditions and female labor force participation on sex-specific suicide rates, I arrive at four main conclusions. First, I find that, for both males and females, the positive association between unemployment and suicide is stronger for the working-age population (aged 25-64) than for the total population. Second, I find that the unemployment-suicide link is stronger for females than for males. I estimate that a one percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate is predicted to increase the suicide rate of working-age females by 1.6%, compared to 0.8% for working-age …
Do Students Buy “Familiar” Stocks? A Field Experiment, George Psaradakis, Scott Deacle, Rudolph Henkel, Steve Aukers
Do Students Buy “Familiar” Stocks? A Field Experiment, George Psaradakis, Scott Deacle, Rudolph Henkel, Steve Aukers
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Existing literature shows that biases related to awareness can influence investors’ decisions when constructing portfolios or making financial decisions. In this paper, we examine whether student investors are drawn to stocks issued by companies with large general marketing budgets, based on the Ad Age 200, and stocks that are associated with popular brands. A field experiment was conducted in which undergraduate students constructed their own virtual stock portfolios. A treatment group of students was given a training seminar in stock market fundamentals in order to enhance their skillsets for stock market analysis and stock selection. The treatment group was compared …
Parent Anger Relates To Cortisol Elevations For Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Jamie Gensbauer
Parent Anger Relates To Cortisol Elevations For Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Jamie Gensbauer
West Chester University Master’s Theses
A robust research literature suggests that the impact of early adversity on child developmental outcomes is partially mediated or explained by the physiological stress response functioning. Economic hardship, for example, has been linked to dysregulation in levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as has negative parent emotion expression. Whereas a number of studies have examined links between parent depression and anxiety and child stress levels, the present study is the first we know of to examine parent anger in relation to child cortisol. Participants were 370 children attending Head Start preschool, and their parents or primary caregivers. According to federal …

Adam Smith And The Creative Role Of Imagination, Keith Hankins, Brennan Mcdavid
Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
That imagination plays a fundamental role in Smith’s accounts of both sympathy and scientific inquiry is well documented. Smith scholars have also long recognized that the accounts of these roles presented in The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the History of Astronomy are broadly Humean. In particular, the exercise of imagination in both the social and scientific domains is limited by the extent of our experience. Whether we are “changing places in fancy” with our fellows, thereby giving rise to that all-important sentiment of sympathy, or conjecturing relations between observed phenomena in an effort to quell the sentiments of wonder …

Fostering Infant And Toddler Music Competence At The Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center, Ellen Mathews, Laura Herold, Shelley Mcnally, Donia Timby
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
This paper presents a creative research project that introduced musical instruments in an outdoor setting to infants and toddlers ages 0-to-3 years old. It was grounded in research suggesting that music plays a vital component in expanding development in the early childhood years, helping to promote learning across many domains. This project began with a survey distributed to 7 infant and toddler classroom educators, after which responses were analyzed for themes regarding perceived infant interests. Subsequent observations were conducted to evaluate the best fit for the implementation of an outdoor experiential music space. Based on the findings, a developmentally appropriate …

Effects Of Time-Restricted Feeding And Whey Protein Isolate Supplementation On Dietary Intake, Mood, And Sleep In A 12-Week Randomized Controlled Trial, Sydney E. Boudrey, Aubree L. Hawley
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Obesity affects adults in the United States, leading to chronic diseases and reduced well-being. Time-Restricted Feeding (TRF) is a type of dietary intervention lacking current data regarding the effectiveness on facets of well-being. This study’s objective was to determine the effect of time-restricted feeding supplemented with whey protein isolate on food intake, sleep, and mood in overweight or obese adults. Nineteen participants were randomly assigned to the control or experimental group: 1) control, TRF, and 2) experimental, TRF with whey protein supplementation. Participants followed the assigned dietary intervention for 12 weeks. Every 4 weeks (baseline, week 4, week 8, and …
Development Of A Reinforcer Assessment: A Measure Of Potential Reinforcers In The Lives Of Older Adults, Nicole A. Praska
Development Of A Reinforcer Assessment: A Measure Of Potential Reinforcers In The Lives Of Older Adults, Nicole A. Praska
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The aim of this study was to create a new measure that assesses potential reinforcers in the lives of older adults residing in assisted living facilities. It is important to assess what an individual finds rewarding since individuals have a greater quality of life if they are doing activities that they enjoy. The study involved a two-step process. First, a list of potential reinforcers was created and evaluated by professionals in the field. Then this list was formatted into a survey and presented to 612 older adults. Participants rated these potential reinforcers on a Likert scale. Results were then evaluated …

Digital Platforms And Entrepreneurial Support: A Field Experiment In Online Mentoring, Saurabh A. Lall, Li-Wei Chen, Dyana P. Mason
Management Faculty Publications
The benefits of entrepreneurial mentorship are well documented, but there is limited research on how entrepreneurs connect with mentors, especially in digital settings. We partnered with an online platform that connects entrepreneurs to potential mentors to conduct a field experiment in online mentoring. Drawing on literature on entrepreneurial mentorship and Social Cognitive Theory, we compared the effects of three interventions on the likelihood of reaching out and making a connection with a mentor in a digital setting. We find that showing entrepreneurs a video of a successful mentor–mentee relationship increases the chances that they will reach out to a potential …
A Study On Bangladesh's Grameen Bank And The Ready-Made Garment Industry: The Effects Of Rising Industrialization On The Reliance Of Microfinance, Elaine Yang
Scripps Senior Theses
Microfinance institutions offered a solution to borrowing to the ultra-poor through a group lending scheme where social capital drove repayment rates. In Bangladesh, the Grameen Bank was globally recognized as a successful microfinance institution, increasing financial literacy and mobility to the ultra-poor. Tangentially, the ready-made garment industry boomed in some districts with a Grameen Bank presence, while other districts were not impacted at all. Using a difference-in-difference regression model and focusing on the Grameen Bank districts before and after their exposure to the RMG industry on the number of branches, branch members, outstanding loan amount, and zone membership percentage of …

Polytech To Polytek: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous Science, And The Future Forward Polytechnic University, Cutcha Risling Baldy, Kaitlin P. Reed, Kayla Begay
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
It is clear from Cal Poly Humboldt’s Polytechnic Prospectus that Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous communities are key parts of what elevates Humboldt’s development of a polytechnic university for the next century. The prospectus demonstrates Humboldt's proposed framework for a different comprehensive polytechnic "will also be informed by Indigenous communities and ways of knowing, as many Native peoples have lived sustainably in their places since time immemorial” (19). There are many considerations when engaging with TEK, especially around sustainable use. It is also important that engagement with TEK and Indigenous science not only center knowledge sharing, but also how …

Fostering Socio-Ecological Resilience To Wildfire By Interconnecting Knowledge Systems At Cal Poly Humboldt, Jeffrey M. Kane, Erin Kelly, Benjamin Graham, David Greene
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The wildfire-related challenges of Northern California and many other regions in the western United States are daunting in scope and magnitude. Ecologically and culturally salient solutions that limit the negative impacts of wildfire and promote resilience of human and ecological systems will require newer approaches. Through Cal Poly Humboldt and the Fire Resilience Institute, there is greater emphasis on the interconnection of knowledge systems across education, training, research, and management. Here we highlight several on-going efforts that seek to enhance the fire resilience workforce, promote socio-ecological resilience through interdisciplinary projects, and inform management through monitoring and research projects that intentionally …

Religiosity, Family Sexual Communication & Gender As Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Oral Sex Among College/University Students In The United States, Antoinette Napier
Dissertations
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether religiosity, family sexual communication and gender were predictors of attitudes toward oral sex among college/university students in the United States.
Method
Participants completed several surveys, which measured participants' personal religiosity, family sexual communication, and attitudes toward oral sex. A path analysis model was used to analyze the relationship between the proposed variables.
Results
The path analysis hypothesized model resulted in a poor fit for the data. The model was respecified by removing three items which showed weak beta weights. The respecified model produced a good fit for the data. The …

The Influence Of Internalized Heterosexism On Life Satisfaction: Comparing Sexual Minority Women In Belgium And Turkey, Esra Ummak, Ezgi Toplu-Demirtaş, Amber L. Pope, Jeffry Moe
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
To date, the majority of research studying lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) health has been conducted in Westernized, predominantly individualistic countries. Building on minority stress theory and models of LGBTQ health, we explored how sexual orientation and nationality moderated the association between internalized heterosexism and life satisfaction for lesbian and bisexual (LB) women living in two countries (Turkey and Belgium) with contrasting social contexts. The results of two-way MANOVA, in a sample of 339 Turkish and 220 Belgian LB women, revealed main effects but no interaction effects. LB women in Belgium reported less internalized heterosexism and more life …

Attachment Security Moderating The Effects Of Social Media Use On Body Dissatisfaction In Adolescent Girls, Jenna Walters
Attachment Security Moderating The Effects Of Social Media Use On Body Dissatisfaction In Adolescent Girls, Jenna Walters
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Social relationships are important for the vast majority of people, especially adolescents. Social media has become increasingly common in people under the age of 30 and has been associated with body dissatisfaction and stress; furthermore, insecure attachment styles have also been associated with body dissatisfaction in adolescents. Using the survey results from 104 adolescent girls from a Midwestern metropolitan area, this study examined how attachment style potentially moderates the relationship between three social media variables (frequency of use, emotional investment in social media, and pressure felt from media) and body dissatisfaction in adolescent girls. Controlling for age and body mass …

The Humanitarian Crisis Of The Israeli Occupation And Settler Colonialism In The West Bank And Gaza, Sarah Raby
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an extremely sensitive and passionate subject; however, it is often misrepresented in western media. The military occupation and illegal settler colonialism practices of Israel have led to numerous human rights abuses and ultimately have persuaded many international watchdogs, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, to label Israel an apartheid state. This literature review will discuss the tools of occupation used by Israel to oppress Palestinians including the separation wall, restriction of movement and blockades, and home demolition. It will further examine in detail the use of mass incarceration and excessive force used by military and …

Effect Of State Covid-19 Policies On Post-Pandemic Employment, Jason Lawless
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent shutdowns pushed many out of their jobs. In the US, there was a wide variety of economic and health system support provided by the states. Using data from Oxford University’s COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, this study attempts to find a relationship between the amount of financial support received by workers and current employment, hypothesizing that states that provided greater income and debt relief are now seeing less employment. This paper uses two different dependent variables, total employment, and restaurant employment. While controlling for population demographics and political leanings, we find that the effect of …
Walkability As A Tool To Facilitate Civic Engagement, Jessi Kwek
Walkability As A Tool To Facilitate Civic Engagement, Jessi Kwek
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The United States is unique in the extent of its car dependence - our reliance on individualized modes of transportation leaves little room for other, more accessible, forms of transportation in most places. This unimodal transportation design leaves those without cars unable to participate in public life in the same way, but further, it restricts our participation in civic life as a whole. Civic engagement rates have fallen with the rise of the automobile, and left us disconnected from and ignorant to the people and activities that would make up our communities. The exception tends to be areas where multiple …

Ethnic Fractionalization And Health In West Africa, Odia Kaba
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Artificial borders created during Africa's colonial era have had a lasting impact on the continent, specifically in relation to culture and ethnicity. This study investigates the relationship between ethnic diversity and health outcomes and health care infrastructure in West Africa. I explore the effects of ethnic fractionalization on various health outcomes such as life expectancy and mortality rates, health-related infrastructure and staffing, and disease and immunization levels. This paper will also discuss colonialism and its institutional legacy. The discussion of the findings will include the impact of ethnic fractionalization, GNI per capita, and foreign aid on these outcomes.
