The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris
The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Existing research indicates that adolescent egocentrism, people of adolescent age being overly interested in oneself, is influenced by numerous factors, including identity development and parental behavior (Scarfo, 1993). Though it has been shown that this link between perceived parental behavior and adolescent egocentrism exists (Adams & Jones, 1982), research has not yet examined this relationship in emerging adults. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between parental behavior/support and egocentrism in emerging adults, while controlling for personality. Emerging adult college students (N = 46), completed a Qualtrics survey that measured imaginary audience (a component of …
Saying No To Say Yes: Mediating Student Technology Needs In Times Of Crisis, Catherine Fonseca, Rita Premo, Hilary Smith
Saying No To Say Yes: Mediating Student Technology Needs In Times Of Crisis, Catherine Fonseca, Rita Premo, Hilary Smith
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This chapter details the mediating role embraced by the SSU Library in managing university-wide technology and learning challenges during an unanticipated pivot to remote instruction and is organized according to lessons learned. Responding to COVID disruptions in real time, we identified key areas where our expertise and relationships allowed us to advocate for and support students, while also saying no or limiting our participation in others. Limiting the services provided during a crisis to only those that fit within the core scope of our mission was a powerful tactic that libraries should exercise often and widely communicate. Rather than answering …
The Efficacy Of Limbic System Retraining And Neuroplasticity In The Management Of Chronic Pain And Disease: A Systematic Review, Julia Carr
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Chronic pain and disease are prevalent, affecting 51.6 million people in 2023. Therefore, due to the high complexity of chronic disease, many providers try different interventions to alleviate pain and improve their patient's quality of life. The limbic system is a critical component of the brain involved in pain perception and emotional regulation. With an overactive limbic system, the perception of pain is enhanced and continues to cause discomfort for the patient. By retraining the limbic system to alter the fight or flight response, a significant reduction in pain can be achieved, which results in better emotion regulation. The …
The Effectiveness Of Laser Acupuncture In Pain Management: A Systematic Review, June Park
The Effectiveness Of Laser Acupuncture In Pain Management: A Systematic Review, June Park
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Pain is a common symptom across many medical conditions that patients experience. Pain management is complex and may need a combination of several management techniques. Laser acupuncture(LA) has been previously used as an adjunct to conventional pain treatments.
Objective: This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of laser acupuncture in various fields of medical situations such as chronic pain, low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, postoperative pain and dental procedures.
Methods: A computer based literature search of databases through GoogleScholar and PubMed was used to identify randomized controlled trials(RCTs) published after 2018 that studied the effect of LA in …
How Nonmarket Externalities Affect The U.S. Business Dynamism: An Economic Approach To Drug Epidemic, Chukwudi Ikwueze
How Nonmarket Externalities Affect The U.S. Business Dynamism: An Economic Approach To Drug Epidemic, Chukwudi Ikwueze
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Businesses thrive best in an environment devoid of constraints, including those resulting from third-party activities with longstanding economic underpinnings. While existing research has extensively explored how costs and benefits emanating from businesses affect third parties, in the form of market externality, little attention has been given to understanding how costs and benefits arising from third-party activities influence businesses. To fill this gap, this paper aims to introduce the concept of nonmarket externality, which represents the influence of third-party activities on businesses, and use it to examine whether third-party activities associated with the drug epidemic influence the U.S. business dynamism. The …
The Impact Of Household Debt On Labor Market Recovery During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Weinan Yan
The Impact Of Household Debt On Labor Market Recovery During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Weinan Yan
Pennsylvania Economic Review
The global economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in an increase in unemployment rates and widespread job losses. To address this issue, many countries implemented expansionary monetary and fiscal policies to stimulate their economies and support the labor market. As a result, unemployment rates began to decline in the third quarter of 2020. However, by the fourth quarter of 2021, some countries had achieved pre-pandemic levels of unemployment, while others had not. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors that influence a country's labor market recovery during the pandemic. This study addresses a crucial but …
The Influence Of Motivation On Men’S Perceptions Of Peer Social Norms And Sexual Aggression Behavior In An Experimental Proxy, Mollie Colleen Mcdaniel
The Influence Of Motivation On Men’S Perceptions Of Peer Social Norms And Sexual Aggression Behavior In An Experimental Proxy, Mollie Colleen Mcdaniel
Wayne State University Dissertations
Social Norms Theory (SNT) proposes that many individuals engage in problematic behaviors because they want to be accepted by their peers and incorrectly believe that most of their peers engage in those behaviors. SNT has frequently been used to explain men’s sexual aggression perpetration; however, the findings are mixed. I proposed that social norms influence the likelihood of sexual aggression only when individuals are motivated to be positively evaluated by others. Two studies utilize the sexual imposition paradigm, a “victim present” experimental proxy for sexual aggression in which men were given the opportunity to send sexually explicit material to a …

What Do People Affected By Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Want From Health Communications? Evidence From The Als Talk Project, Shelagh K. Genuis, Westerly Luth, Tania M. Bubela, Wendy S. Johnston
Office of the Provost
Introduction/aims: Health communication is central to effective, supportive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinical care. Guidance for ALS communication is limited, focuses on diagnosis disclosure, and frequently relies on expert consensus and/or reviews. Patient-based evidence is needed to guide ALS health communication. We investigated how the experiences of ALS patients and family caregivers can inform effective communication practices from diagnosis to end-of-life.
Methods: Data were drawn from the ALS Talk Project, an asynchronous, online focus group study. Seven focus groups and five interviews (105 participants) were conducted. Data were qualitatively analyzed using directed content analysis and the constant-comparative approach.
Results: We …

What does it mean to map Indigenous presence onto lands that have been appropriated by settler colonial nation states? This chapter examines the challenges and potentials of re-inscribing Indigenous land relations through a digital mapping project, Indigenous Pennsylvania: Past, Present and Future. Situating itself within the growing scholarship of Indigenous cartographies, the chapter presents Indigenous Pennsylvania as an example of d-ecomedia, a shorthand we offer for ecomedia projects that foreground decolonial methodologies. Such methodologies prompt us to attend to a storied sense of Indigenous place-based relations through attention to Indigenous spatial and temporal modes of mediation.
Understanding Scholarly Articles: Teaching A Strategic Reading Method To Academically At-Risk Students, Kimberly Foster, Amy F. Fyn
Understanding Scholarly Articles: Teaching A Strategic Reading Method To Academically At-Risk Students, Kimberly Foster, Amy F. Fyn
Library Faculty Publications
In 2018, the library began partnering with the Academic Coaching Experience Department (ACED) to support students. Academic Coaches had been developing a new course for academically at-risk first and second year students and wanted to collaborate with the library on a unit. Typically, library instruction sessions would be oriented toward providing instruction centered on a research assignment, but the new course had none. A fresh approach was needed to provide useful and engaging content for this student population. To avoid redundancy with the research skills addressed in other courses ACED students may be taking, two librarians decided to complement a …

Researching Medical Treatment Assessments From United States Military Veterans Diagnosed With Substance Use Disorder, And Determining Interest In The Matrix Model Of Treatment For Potential Application In Their Treatment Programs, Christopher R. Strunk
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this research study is to learn the beliefs and thoughts on the current state of medical treatment provided to United States (US) military Veterans diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD), and gauge Veterans’ levels of interest and support in the potential application of the Matrix Model of Treatment (MMT) in their healthcare programs. This proposal focused on verifying the Veterans’ interest in the MMT model since the US Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) does not currently implement this full-spectrum, 16-week treatment system. It is believed interest will be strong enough to merit supporting its consideration with approving …
Integrated Stem Learning Activity: Effect On Student Engagement And Learning, Leslie Deitrich Sauder
Integrated Stem Learning Activity: Effect On Student Engagement And Learning, Leslie Deitrich Sauder
Dissertations and Theses
Student engagement in math and science courses decreases starting in middle school and continues throughout high school (Museus et al., 2011). This lack of engagement results in students taking only the required math and science coursework and not advanced coursework that would help prepare them for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning activities may be used to promote student engagement and learning. This experimental design study was conducted with students in grades 3-5 in one rural mid-sized school district in the upper mid-west. Student engagement was analyzed using a …
Attachment Network Structures And Adult Mental Health, Junnan Tian
Attachment Network Structures And Adult Mental Health, Junnan Tian
Dissertations and Theses
Close relationships are essential to the mental health and adaptation of adults. The study of close relationships and mental health has concentrated on dyadic interactions in different types of relationships, such as parents, best friends, and romantic partners. Much less attention has focused on how a network of close relationships informs mental health. This study concentrated on a network of five close relationships in relation to adult mental health outcomes. Four network metrics, which are composition (who), strength (number of attachment figures), morphology (hierarchical or nonhierarchical), and physical proximity were examined as predictors of adult mental health outcomes (i.e., depression, …

More Than The Renaissance: The Reclassification Of The Disney Animated Films Of The Classics Period, Alia R. Tyner
Publications and Research
Over the past ten years, more than 200 peer-reviewed articles with Disney in their titles have been published across disciplines, especially in the humanities and social sciences. Beginning in the 1930s with Disney’s first motion picture, the company, its venues, acquisitions, movies, and other products have become a robust research topic for academics, constantly refreshed with new ideas and perspectives. As Disney celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023, researchers and readers examining the movies could benefit from some consistency in how the passage of time is described, and yet the methods of classification of these movies are not robust or …

As an antiracist problematic, Whiteness was used to better understand the persistence of access disparities to college counseling centers for students of color. This study explored the question, “How do experiences of Whiteness impact access to mental health care for domestic, undergraduate White students and students of color at their respective college counseling centers?” Semi-structured interviews were completed with 6 undergraduates (three White students and three students of color). Data analysis was completed through three successive, iterative cycles of coding: value systems, color-blind ideologies, and Whiteness. The first two cycles of coding informed the last cycle. Five themes of Whiteness …
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology
What social forces shape the trajectory of novel, moralized forms of finance such as social finance, green finance, or Islamic banking and finance? More broadly, how do agents mobilize arguments and organize each other to create any form of financial innovation? This article addresses both questions by contributing an ethnography of a novel financial innovation pseudonymously named Sukuk Illumination, an internationally traded moral alternative to a corporate bond. This article’s findings both elaborate and subsume existing functionalist and critical explanations of financial innovation. The central argument is that we can better understand what causes financial innovation and the trajectory that …
Binge Drinking And Non-Consensual Drug Intoxication, Jake Blendermann
Binge Drinking And Non-Consensual Drug Intoxication, Jake Blendermann
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Sexual violence towards women on a college campus have remained an issue the past few decades, with about one out of every four female students becoming a victim of it (Rosoff, 2018). Coupled with high rates of binge-drinking on college campuses (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2021), it can be argued that now, more than ever, that attention needs to be drawn to how females can try to be aware of strategies to help combat such predators. Previous research also shows a link between functionally inhibiting drugs referred to as "roofies" that can be slipped into the drink …

Attention Contagion In Online Courses: Examining Student Attention During Recorded Lectures, Makenna Connolly
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Recorded lectures have become increasingly common and are now widespread in online courses. Given this rapid rise, it is important to investigate how students interact with this multimedia and best practices for lecturers in using this technology. One area of investigation is how students interact with the recordings of previously live-streamed lectures with visible students. Attention contagion is one such interaction, and previous research has shown that attention and inattention can spread in in-person and live-streamed lectures. The present study builds off the existing limited literature to examine whether attention contagion can occur across time through asynchronous, recorded lectures. One …

The Impact Of Supreme Court Make Up On Rulings Towards Administrative Agencies, Hannah N. Cothern
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study investigated whether or not the membership of the United States Supreme Court affects the way the institution rules in cases regarding federal administrative agencies by collecting and comparing votes from 2018-2019 and 2020-2022. It found in the first section that justices showed an anti-deferential attitude towards agencies and in the second section a deferential attitude towards agencies, despite the conservative majority being larger in the second section. The result is likely due to the types of agencies and content of cases involved.

Understanding School Shootings Using Qualitatively-Informed Natural Language Processing, Quan K. Do
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Prior literature has investigated the connection between school shootings and factors of familial trauma and mental health. Specifically, experiences related to parental suicide, physical or sexual abuse, neglect, marital violence, or severe bullying have been associated with a propensity for carrying out a mass shooting. Given prior research has shown common histories among school shooters, it follows that a person's violent tendencies can be revealed by their previous communications with others, thus aiding in predicting an individual's proclivity for school shootings. However, previous literature found no conclusions were drawn from online posts made by the shooters prior to the mass …

Ivermectin On Twitter: Investigating Early Advocacy For Covid-19 Vaccine Alternatives, Daniel Gabriel
Honors Undergraduate Theses
An emerging pattern of public doubt in scientific and political authorities has been seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, where numerous alternatives to vaccinations have gone viral. Ivermectin's growth from a relatively known specialist drug to a political controversy is a striking example of the amplification that social media can provide. Doubt in the dangers of illness has occurred in regard to previous diseases with limited impact, including the Zika virus, Ebola, and H1N1. However, the COVID-19 pandemic's impact in the United States is a much larger example of the gaps in current risk assessments and methods of public health authorities. …

It's Not The Same As It Was: Analysis Of Modern Coping In The Age Of Virtual Media, Elizabeth M. Gajdzisz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Among young adults, stress triggers social media use, especially as a coping strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic (Wolfers & Utz, 2022). Similarly, video games offer a way for players to engage in escapism to cope with stressors (Prinsen & Schofield, 2021). Increased use of virtual media continues despite social distancing orders being largely lifted; while the risks and potential negative impact of social media on mental health remain uncertain (Orben & Przybylski, 2019). The current study examined the use of virtual media and virtual gaming as coping mechanisms among traditional-age undergraduate students. Undergraduate participants (N=310) attending a large metropolitan university …
