Dove released a video titled “Reverse Selfie” in 2021. The video is only a minute long but shows the unfortunate reality that so many young individuals live through. Dove intended for their audience to see that social media during the pandemic has heightened insecurities in young girls and is creating unrealistic standards. Upon digging deeper, however, there is a clearer message that beauty standards cause loneliness starting at a young age. The video raises awareness in many different ways through verbal communication and rhetorical devices — and, the research surrounding the context only solidifies it all. The video, though a …
Measuring The Effect Of Negative Political Advertising On Voter Turnout, Will Sosna
Measuring The Effect Of Negative Political Advertising On Voter Turnout, Will Sosna
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Many scholars have explored the effects of negative political advertising on voter turnout, some arguing that it suppresses turnout, others that it stimulates it. These two views represent the demobilization and stimulation hypotheses, respectively. A third school argues no meaningful relationship exists between the two variables. Despite extensive coverage in the literature, a newer contribution is needed to accurately assess the issue within a more modern context. I utilize data from the 2020 ANES Time Series Study to determine the extent to which exposure to negative political advertising affects voter turnout. I find the effect is slightly depressive, although minimal …
Examining Appalachian Realignment, Ali Graham
Examining Appalachian Realignment, Ali Graham
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
The Appalachian region is a unique case within American politics, yet it has not been given much attention by political scientists. In the 1990s and 2000s, the area underwent a political realignment, shifting from a Democratic stronghold to a Republican one. I plan to examine proposed theories of realignment in the context of Appalachia to determine the root cause of this shift. I expect to find a relationship between the adoption of environmentalism as a Democratic principle and the change in Appalachian voting behavior because of the prominence of the coal industry in the region. I will use statistical analysis …

Divorce is a separation in the union of partners in marriage, and father abandonment is separation of the father from the child(ren). While father abandonment can be regularly experienced by child(ren) as a result of divorce, father abandonment can result from any reason a father is separated from the child(ren). In this study, the interest was to explore and investigate the lived experiences of women who had been abandoned by their fathers at a young age to better understand the relational outcomes and impacts they perceived on their lives. While divorce clearly has negative impacts on children, the focus of …
Understanding Student Experiences Of Renewable And Traditional Assignments, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Lindsey Gwozdz
Understanding Student Experiences Of Renewable And Traditional Assignments, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Lindsey Gwozdz
Library Faculty Publications
Renewable assignments are student created artifacts that have value outside of courses. However, more empirical inquiry in renewable assignments grounded in theoretical frameworks is necessary. In this study, students (N=69) engaged in renewable assignments and were asked to report on their perceptions based on the self-determination theory of motivation and social justice principles. Overall, students reported higher levels of motivation as well as more opportunity to represent their identities for renewable assignments than traditional assignments. Students who opted to publicly share reported higher levels of competence and relatedness than did students who did not opt to publicly share.

The field of open education and research on the topic has notably expanded since the introduction of the term 20 years ago. Given these developments, a framework to structure research inquiry is necessary to ground and organize findings in open education. We propose the SCOPE framework for open education research: social justice, cost, outcomes, perceptions, and engagement. In this article, we explain how this framework emphasizes the need for social justice at the forefront of open education research. In addition, we incorporate existing theories in social justice, motivation, cognition, pedagogy, and engagement into each of the components to propose theoretical …

Covid-19: Social Support Among The Bereaved, Fernande Nanda Mamane
Covid-19: Social Support Among The Bereaved, Fernande Nanda Mamane
Theses and Dissertations
Bereavement is a universal experience. Presently, there have been over 1,024,611 deaths in the United States alone related to the COVID-19 virus and this number is growing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). With the significant rise in deaths, as well as subsequent societal health and safety measures due to the pandemic, social support for the bereaved is expected to be severely impacted. Limited access to social spheres, as well as adjustments to typical funeral practices, may impact the perception of support by those grieving. The purpose the study was to gain a better understanding of bereaved individual’s experiences …

Public Perceptions Of Local Food Environments In Shrinking Cities: Weighing Solutions To Community Food Insecurity In Camden, New Jersey, Christopher Tirri, Devon Nealer, Katrina Mccarthy, Mahbubur Meenar
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
Historically, the shrinking city of Camden, New Jersey has experienced a wide range of issues related to social, environmental, and nutritional injustice. This study focuses on two of the city's most at-risk neighborhoods, Waterfront South and Bergen Square, and examines residents’ perceptions of their local food environments, food insecurity, and proposed solutions, including a potential online grocery delivery service. Many participants across our four methods indicated significant levels of food insecurity, often citing their neighborhoods’ dependence on unhealthy corner stores, lack of full-service grocery retailers, and lack of connection to local food initiatives in other neighborhoods. Responses from our focus …

Time Towards Tenure Dean’S Procedures For University Libraries, Annie Bélanger
Library Reports and Communication
The Dean has the authority to grant time towards tenure as per BOT Policy 4.2.7 at the time of appointment. The policy allows for up to 3 years of equivalency at another academic institution. Once granted, it cannot be subsequently changed, rescinded or revoked. The ability to pause the tenure clock as granted by BOT Policy 4.2.7.2 remains available to faculty members who have been awarded time towards tenure.
This document outlines the approach that the Dean of University Libraries will use in granting time towards tenure in order to advance transparency and accountability in the granting of equivalency.

Forest conservation has long faced conflicts between traditionally-living indigenous peoples and other more modern stakeholders. Often such conflicts are rooted in differences between the perceived interests of indigenous peoples and other stakeholders, or in ineffective negotiations due to a power-disparity between involved stakeholders. Thus far conservationists have tried to overcome such conflicts by creating different types of collaborative management systems with indigenous peoples. Although co-management appears a good solution to guide all stakeholders towards a conservation target, in practice few such arrangements have proven successful. The co-management model offers a greater potential for success when it is approached as a …

From Consumers To Creators: Scaffolding Digital Information Literacy Throughout The Undergraduate Curriculum, Emily Metcalf, Lisa Louis, Catherine Rudowsky, Tara Carlisle
Books and Contributions to Books
For decades, the Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) has promoted library services across campus and provided information literacy instruction upon request. Despite these efforts, the library’s reach was not evenly distributed across subject disciplines or course levels, with over half of the instruction occurring at the first-year level. The TAMU-CC librarians knew that to help students become truly information literate, equitable instruction was needed across more disciplines and throughout all course levels.
In the spring of 2018, we encountered an opportunity to create a robust digital information literacy program in the shape of a …
Introduction: Imagined And Real Ai, Michael Paulus
Introduction: Imagined And Real Ai, Michael Paulus
SPU Works
The increasing role and power of artificial intelligence in our lives and world require us to imagine and shape a desirable future with this technology. Since visions of AI often draw from Christian apocalyptic narratives, current discussions about technological hopes and fears present an opportunity for a deeper engagement with Christian eschatological resources. This book argues that the apocalyptic imagination can transform how we think about and use AI, helping us discover ways artificial agency may help us create a better world.

This paper examines the strategic evolution of Europe’s security framework in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian War and the concluded Vilnius Summit — a critical juncture, with the possibility of selecting a new Secretary General. Among the nominees was Kaja Kallas, Estonia’s Prime Minister, whose innovative vision advocated a departure from traditional models. Kallas promoted a more inclusive and flexible NATO membership structure, more active and robust support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, increased roles for women in security architecture and policymaking, and the utilisation of public diplomacy and strategic communication in novel ways. The summit culminated in the reappointment …

From January 2020 to March 2021, the U.S. Government implemented five laws to marshal the federal response to the December 2019 outbreak of the Coronavirus. For context, past federal emergency policies include the New Deal $1T, World War II $4T, Hurricane Katrina $120B, AIDS $100B, $2.4T Iraq War, $90B Ukraine War, $44B Climate Change, Covid Vaccines $30B and, the largest emergency spending allocation in U.S. history, Covid-19 $4.1T. An evaluation of the government’s strategy to confront the pandemic is framed into two segments: legislative function – how the Congress mobilizes emergency legislation; and, executive function – how the administration manages …
Theory-Building And Tool-Building For A Science Of Dysfunctional Political Discourse, Eric Hamilton, Marguerite Williamson, Andrew Hurford
Theory-Building And Tool-Building For A Science Of Dysfunctional Political Discourse, Eric Hamilton, Marguerite Williamson, Andrew Hurford
Education Division Scholarship
This paper extends a developing analytic framework for political discourse that takes place over digital social media. Earlier presentations of the framework have furnished a rationale for applying the conceptual framework of epistemic frame theory and the tools of quantitative ethnography for political discourse analysis. They have provided early existence proofs of the viability of epistemic network analysis (ENA) for rudimentary models of social media threads that involve political content. The current theoretical paper moves significantly beyond this foundation. It summarizes and deepens the explanation of the constructs of discursive transactions, response grammars, and epistemic frames in political discourse. It …

3 Essays On Protests, Repression, And Signaling, Dogus Aktan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on conceptual development across multiple questions of political contention, with a focus on informational processes. In the first paper, I examine the interaction of informational and disruptive effects of protests with a formal model. The model shows that repression can have a screening purpose. Governments use coercion to set the terms of contention so that they only have to accommodate sufficiently aggrieved and salient groups, while filtering out the rest. The model also demonstrates that decreased cost of mobilization makes repression indirectly cheaper for governments, leading to more repression. In the second paper, I examine why governments …
Defining Business As Usual In Preschool Interventions For Challenging Behavior, Eleanor Bold
Defining Business As Usual In Preschool Interventions For Challenging Behavior, Eleanor Bold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Challenging behavior (CB) is a major barrier to service delivery in preschool classrooms. Persistent CB has been found to significantly impact children’s academic and social success long-term, especially amongst children from historically minoritized populations and those with disabilities. Numerous evidence-based intervention strategies exist to prevent and reduce CB, yet preschool teachers continue to voice a desire to increase their capacity to do so in the classroom due to high rates of CB continuing to be observed. This dissertation seeks to address this research to practice gap by ascertaining the current baseline intervention practices utilized to manage CB in preschool classrooms …

Helminth Parasites Of Northern Cottonmouth, Agkistrodon Piscivorus (Ophidia: Viperidae), From Arkansas, C.T. Mcallister, C.R. Bursey, H.W. Robison
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Northern cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus is a large, semiaquatic viperid snake found statewide in Arkansas. Although a great deal has been published on helminth parasites of A. piscivorus from other parts of its range, little (outside of its cestodes) is known about those other helminths occurring in cottonmouths of the state. In our survey, we examined seven adult A. piscivorus from Polk County and a single specimen from Calhoun County. Several helminth parasites were found, including three trematodes, Styphlodora magna, Renifer ellipticus, and Paralechriorchis syntomentera, two nematodes, an unknown larval ascarid and Physaloptera abjecta, an oligacanthorhynchid acanthocephalan cystacanth, and a …

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Utah's people and environment are currently experiencing significant changes as the population continues to grow, droughts and flooding pose threats to agriculture, air quality leads to health concerns, energy needs rise, and public lands see increased use. Action is needed to address these changes, especially given how rapidly they are occurring. Political leaders, environmental organizations, Tribal Nations, and universities play a critical role in ensuring Utah’s environment, economy, workforce, and underserved communities have a sustainable path forward. Understanding residents’ views, values, and concerns can help better craft the policy, inform infrastructure, and identify the services needed to do so. With …

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
“Freedom, too, the long-sought, we still seek, —” (DuBois, 1903, p. 7) The foremost endeavor of people of historically marginalized racial/ethnic communities, and particularly for the purposes of this paper, Black people, is to be free. The term “free” has several connotations that are frequently used by the general public in a typically detached manner. Free. To be educated, empowered and autonomous, thus unobstructed and restrained by subjection to the hegemony of the more highly educated and empowered. You might be wondering, “Who are ‘we’?” and “Why are ‘we’ still seeking freedom?” The answers to your questions will be …
