Picturing Failure And Negative Self-Talk: A Perfect Combo For Choking, Corbin Barnett, Maia Busi

Athletes and performers can experience a phenomenon called ‘choking’ whereby skill execution and performance decrease beyond self-expected standards due to factors such as performance anxiety. We explored the relationship between choking and how athletes/performers feel their inner experience influenced their choking experience. Participants (N = 63) were recruited to complete an online Qualtrics survey measuring mental imagery and their possible experience of choking in performance. Narrowing down to just those who reported choking (N = 19), participants were asked how much they believed various internal factors influenced the choking event to occur. An investigation of bilingualism in terms of the acquisition of a second language (L2), the cognitive benefits shared by people who are bilingual, and academic outcomes of English Language Learners (ELL). Lenneberg’s critical period hypothesis (CPH) is applied to early life acquisition of L2 as well as both means of later life L2 acquisition. Cognitive benefits are shared in moderation by people in every category of bilingualism, and are discussed in depth with regards to executive function processes of working memory and cognitive flexibility. This review is focused on the effects of different attributional styles for competitive athletes. Attributional style refers to the tendency of individuals to attribute behavior to several types of factors. This review analyzes the impacts of six attributional dimensions: external, internal, global, stable, intentional, and controllable (Hanrahan, et al. 1989). These dimensions, most commonly measured via the Sports Attributional Style Scale or SASS (Hanrahan, Grove, & Hattie 1989), each uniquely contribute to an individual’s perception of both individual and team performance. The five principles of mental imagery by Finke (1989) are discussed to understand the complexity of mental imagery. Our USU research team worked with the Cosplay for Science non-profit who are dedicated to reducing barriers to science and scientists through their events and initiatives. As a part of this collaboration, we observed how scientists interacted with comicon attendees at a pop-up museum booth. We are interested in finding out how scientists shift norms and assumptions about who participates in science. We collected one-on-one in-depth interview data from nine scientists from a variety of education and work fields who identify as female, non-binary or gender queer after their involvement with the pop-up museum booth. Educational researchers frequently target and measure student on-task behavior in academic settings. On-task behavior is typically defined based on the topography of the behavior (i.e., what it looks like to be on task). However, few studies have assessed if students being on task corresponds with students completing more work or responding more accurately. The current study examined correspondence between on-task behavior, work completion, and work accuracy for four elementary and middle-school aged children across different contingencies of reinforcement in a clinical setting. Assertiveness Or Antibiotics?: Self-Assertiveness As A Predictor Of Sexual Health, Zoe Sweaney

The following study investigated the relationship between various psychological correlates and sexual health. Data was supportive of a significant negative correlation between assertiveness as a personality trait and risky sexual behaviors, indicating that the more confident individuals are in asserting themselves both in general social contexts and within intimate relationships, the less likely they are to be exposed to or engage in high-risk behaviors. The implications for college campuses are significant: future research should explore the effect of scripts and other educational resources on student assertiveness and sexual health. Post Roe V. Wade: Evaluation Of Abortion Attitudes, Justice Jones, Rumbidzai Chisango

With the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, abortion is at the forefront of many political discussions. This study aims to investigate how exposure to a politically charged topic (abortion) versus a general heath topic (Cancer) affects a person’s bias and social identity. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: abortion or cancer and then completed measures on collective self-esteem, global self-esteem, Conservatism, in-group bias, and demographics. The younger group rated republicans more favourable (t(198) = 2.48, p < .01)., had less abortion knowledge (t(103) = -2.51, p < .01)., and were higher in core conservatism ((t(200) = 2.9, p < .01) compared to the older group. Republicans (in a forced choice question) rated themselves higher and democrats lower, were higher in conservatism, but were lower in prochoice attitudes and abortion knowledge (all p’s < .001). There were no significant differences in conservatism, pro-choice attitudes, and political bias when comparing states with legal abortion access versus illegal abortion laws.

Despite wanting an independent identity we cannot deny that our perceived identity is heavily influenced by who our partner is. Our previous research found that black partners were perceived as significantly more black in intraracial couples (pictured with a black partner) than compared to interracial couples (Grembocki & Afful, 2019). We applied similar methodology to examine how an individual’s perceived identity varies in lesbian relationships when manipulating gender expression via clothing and posture. Parent-child relationship factors, such as family-related self-worth and perception of parental acceptance,are associated with peer relations. For example, parental rejection is negatively associated with child prosocial behavior (Rothenberg et al., 2022). Parental rejection is related to more aggression and adjustment problems (Rohner, 1975; Rothenberg, 2022). Less is known about the association between self-worth related to the family and peer relations. Contingencies of self-worth refer to whether “self-esteem is sustained by successes and achievements or threatened by obstacles and failures” within these domains (Perinelli et al., 2020). Parenting challenges and overall stress have increased in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic (Adams et al., 2020). The Better Together program at The Family Place Utah was developed to provide children with positive childhood experiences (PCEs), improve family functioning, and increase nurturing and attachment between parents and their children. We explore the positive impact Better Together has on parent stress.A sample of 219 caregivers with children aged 0 to 18 years participated in a randomized experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of the Better Together program. Over the past few decades, the rate of religious disaffiliation in America has steadily increased. However, research on the experiences of nonreligious parents is lacking. In particular, little is known about how nonreligious parents socialize their children in regard to religious or nonreligious worldviews. Water heritage studies serve as a nexus for research and applied sciences to understand myriad roles that water functions in everyday life. The Water Heritage Anthropological Project evaluates dimensions of water, its infrastructure, and management practices through an interdisciplinary lens. We report on ethnographic work from northern Utah where we conducted semi-structured interviews with three different categories of water users: farmers, water managers, and community members. Our work identifies cultural dimensions of water identity that study participants use to describe their relationship with water. We discuss the social, economic, and environmental implications for communities in the Mountain West.

The purpose of this project was to extend prior work on developing an intervention to reduce discrimination-based stress, moving from Latinx college students to a broader audience of people of color. In addition, moving the intervention online from a face-to-face modality allowed the researchers to have a broader reach, thus broader impact and larger reach. The original intervention, Heart 2 Heart was developed for in-person delivery prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (Domenech Rodríguez Linares, 2020a). Ecofeminism is the environmental philosophy that finds an association between nature and the female gender in society. Using correlational design, in the current study the associations between gender and nature terms and gender and occupations were examined in 106 college aged students (Mage = 19 years, 4 months, 10% male, 89% female, 79% White). Using a word association test created for the use in the current study, participants reported their association between nature terms, human-made terms, and occupations using a 11-response scale ranging from 0= "Little to no association" (low masculinity, low femininity) to 10= "Masculine" or "Feminine."
