Taking Comfort In Virtual Humor: Tolkien Memes As Adaptation And Escape, Nick Polk
Taking Comfort In Virtual Humor: Tolkien Memes As Adaptation And Escape, Nick Polk
Journal of Tolkien Research
Presented at the inaugural Prancing Pony Podcast Moot in 2021, this paper's aim is to argue that Tolkien memes can be classified as adaptation as Linda Hutcheon defines adaptation and argue for a hermeneutic of Tolkien's concept of Escape, as laid out in his essay On Fairy-stories, as way to understand Tolkien meme creation and circulation. Concluding remarks are given to the spreadability of Tolkien memes among Tolkien fan communities.

Higher Education Exports Before And After Covid, John C. Beghin, Byungyul Park
Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review
Historically, the higher education system in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Developing (OECD), a grouping of advanced economies, and especially in the United States, has been a magnet for foreign students, both graduate and undergraduates. Graduate students tend to be supported by teaching and research assistantships from the hosting university and do not generate direct revenues for the hosting institution. They do contribute to the economy with their productivity in research projects and with their private consumption. In contrast, most undergraduate foreign students pay fees and tuition which are often higher than those paid by local …

There are many negative situations that make students depressed and very stressed with their academics. Students who lack endurance need conducive conditions through social support and strong optimism. This study aimed to test the effect of social support and optimism on the resilience of students working on their thesis. The subjects involved were 79 active students of the faculty of psychology. This study was conducted with quantitative methods using three scales: resilience, social support, and optimism. Sampling was performed using the purposive sampling technique, while the analysis employed the multiple linear regression technique. The results of the major hypothesis analysis …

Why Evidence Will Never Convince Someone The World Isn't Flat: The Certainty Of Misinformation, Jason Ozubko
Myth and Science, 2023-24
How do our brains reason through arguments? Are we any good at being rational? And if we’re not rational, what are we? This class will explore some of the common heuristics and biases of cognition, and shed light on why it's so hard (despite our best efforts) to be rational.

Gender Gaps From Labor Market Shocks, Ria Ivandić, Anne Sophie Lassen
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Job loss leads to persistent adverse labor market outcomes, but assessments of gender differences in labor market recovery are lacking. We utilize plant closures in Denmark to estimate gender gaps in labor market outcomes and document that women face an increased risk of unemployment and lose a larger share of their earnings in the two years following job displacement. When accounting for observable differences in human Capital across men and women, half of the gender gap in unemployment remains. In a standard decomposition framework, we document that child care imposes an important barrier to women’s labor market recovery regardless of …

Making Data Management Plans Machine Actionable: Templates And Tools, Joakim Philipson, Adil Hasan, Hanne Moa
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Since September of 2019, a task group within the European Open Science Cloud - EOSC Nordic Project, work-package 5 (T5.3.2), has focused its attention on machine-actionable Data Management Plans (maDMPs). A delivery working-paper from the group (Hasan et al. 2021) concluded in summary that extracting useful information from traditional free-text based DMPs is problematic. While maDMPs are generally more FAIR compliant, and as such accessible to both humans and machines, more interoperable with other systems, and serving different stakeholders for processing, sharing, evaluation and reuse. Different DMP tools and templates have developed independently, to a varying degree, allowing for the …

Analyzing Children’S Trauma During The Covid-19 Pandemic Using Relational-Cultural Theory: A Literature Review, Septinda Rima Dewanti, Yuejiao Wu
Jurnal Kajian Bimbingan dan Konseling
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been extensively discussed, but only a limited number of studies investigate how pandemics are related to traumatic experiences for children. Using a literature review of 38 peer-reviewed articles, both qualitative and quantitative published in the reputable international journals, this study examines how pandemic situations trigger trauma in children. From the literature review, we concluded a number of impacts of Covid 19 on children, including their experience of sudden and shocking changes of events, loss, grief, domestic violence, Covid-19 infections, being surrounded by an adult experiencing mental health disturbance, and becoming the victim of …

COVID-19 bears various traumatic impacts on students. This study aims to identify PTSD symptoms in junior and senior high school students after the COVID-19 outbreak. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional survey method. Meanwhile, the data was collected using a problem checklist instrument. Further, the obtained data were analyzed using non-parametric statistics with the Mann-Whitney test to identify differences in PTSD symptoms based on gender and level of education. The results of the analysis show that symptoms appear in every physical, emotional, mental, behavioral, and spiritual aspect. Besides, we also found a significant difference in the level of anxiety …
The Dual-Task Costs Of Audiovisual Speech Processing Across Levels Of Background Noise And Semantic Constraint, Violet Aurora Brown
The Dual-Task Costs Of Audiovisual Speech Processing Across Levels Of Background Noise And Semantic Constraint, Violet Aurora Brown
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Successful communication requires that listeners not only identify speech, but do so while maintaining performance on other tasks—like remembering what a conversational partner said or paying attention while driving. Although there is a large body of evidence indicating that cues such as audiovisual speech and semantic context substantially improve speech identification, less is known about how they affect the listener’s ability to perform simultaneous cognitive tasks (i.e., how they affect one aspect of listening effort). This set of six experiments systematically evaluates how cues that robustly benefit speech intelligibility—specifically, audiovisual speech and semantic context—affect dual-task costs. Results were consistent with …
Nonprofit Accountability: Effects Of Subsector On Online Accountability, Ibrahima F. Yaro, Trent A. Engbers
Nonprofit Accountability: Effects Of Subsector On Online Accountability, Ibrahima F. Yaro, Trent A. Engbers
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Scandals within the nonprofit sector over compensation and management have increased calls for nonprofits to demonstrate accountability. Many organizations have responded by disclosing information online and providing tools that allow web-based interactions with stakeholders. The literature on nonprofits’ online accountability has found that the level of nonprofit online accountability is affected by their size, age, asset, revenue, and location, but hasn’t been examined in terms of how subsector influences online accountability. Through a web-content analysis of fifty-five nonprofits, this research investigated how subsector (arts and culture, education, health, and human services) influences online accountability using a framework of four types …
