U.S. Trade And Investment Restrictions: Laudable But Costly Goals, Christine Mcdaniel
U.S. Trade And Investment Restrictions: Laudable But Costly Goals, Christine Mcdaniel
Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review
U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo’s recent visit to China resulted in the announcement of a new “export control enforcement information exchange” between the United States and China. The laudable goal is to prevent China from using U.S. technology for military purposes against the United States or our allies. An information exchange may be a way to explain things to each other, but the fact remains that the export controls are indeed in place. China represents large revenue streams for three of the largest US chip producers—about 20% for Nvidia, 60% for Qualcomm, and 20-30% for Intel. If these U.S. companies cannot …

Mindfulness To Reduce Math Anxiety And Improve Math Performance, Hannah E. Murch
Mindfulness To Reduce Math Anxiety And Improve Math Performance, Hannah E. Murch
Masters Theses
Math anxiety, the negative emotional response to math, is a common educational issue observed globally and across many grade levels. Additionally, it negatively impacts math performance and constrains long-term math achievement. Anxious ruminations strain mental resources and encourage avoidance behaviors such as procrastination. The prevalence and detrimental influence of math anxiety necessitate that educators mitigate math anxiety’s negative impact in the classroom. Previous research suggests interventions emphasizing mindfulness, which is the intentional awareness of the present moment, can combat the ruminations of math anxiety. When complemented with interventions on growth mindset, which is the belief that intelligence can grow and …
Framing Roles Of Protagonists And Antagonists In Visual Media, Jonas Braden Larson
Framing Roles Of Protagonists And Antagonists In Visual Media, Jonas Braden Larson
Masters Theses
Many characters and stories have been interpreted over the past few thousand years. Humans are innate storytellers and make connections through various communication methods. Heroes and villains have affected many lives and given people a lens through which to view the world. The perception of stories and their characters in the visual media may not be as subjective as many people think. The framing communication theory was used to study the perception of audience member’s view of protagonists and antagonists in a visual story. Two short films were produced and screened to an audience that filled out surveys on their …

In 2010 a Canadian artist named Jamie Black created an art installation called the REDress Project. The installation featured hundreds of hanging red dresses—to bring attention to the vast number of Indigenous women who had gone missing or murdered (Indigenous Foundations, 2011). This art installation was part of a growing movement to bring attention to Indigenous people who had gone missing in Canada. Over the next few years, the REDress Project exhibit toured the country, bringing more widespread attention to a problem that had been gaining national interest since the formation of the National Coalition for our Stolen Sisters in …
Religious Discrimination Against Minorities: Theories And Findings, Yasemin Akbaba
Religious Discrimination Against Minorities: Theories And Findings, Yasemin Akbaba
Political Science Faculty Publications
One of the established trends in religion and international relations (IR) scholarship is the awareness of a rising level of religious discrimination against minorities. Although there is variation in rates, religious restrictions are widely observed across the globe, including in Western democracies. Scholarship on the restrictions on religious practices has advanced through seeking answers to the following questions: Who discriminates? Who is discriminated against more? What are the causes of restrictions on religious freedom? What are the forms of discrimination? The purpose of this article is to connect the theories and findings of two religious discrimination studies of IR via …
Not On The Menu: Customer Sexual Harassment In The Restaurant Industry, Fernanda Wolburg Martinez
Not On The Menu: Customer Sexual Harassment In The Restaurant Industry, Fernanda Wolburg Martinez
Dissertations and Theses
Despite the high prevalence of customer sexual harassment (CSH) paired with a high turnover in the restaurant industry, there have been few suggestions on resources that may attenuate the effect that bystander and direct CSH might have on strain--anxiety and depressive symptoms--and turnover intentions among restaurant workers. Based on the stipulations of the job-demands resources theory and the empowerment framework, the current study frames direct and bystander CSH as job demands that may be linked to employee strain and turnover intentions. Moreover, CSH preventive supervisor behaviors and organizational intolerance towards CSH are introduced as job resources that may weaken the …
Human Rights And Latina Feminisms: Implications For Clinical Practice With The Latine Diaspora In Anti-Immigrant Times, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Miriam Castillo Martinez
Human Rights And Latina Feminisms: Implications For Clinical Practice With The Latine Diaspora In Anti-Immigrant Times, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Miriam Castillo Martinez
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
In the anti-immigrant context, the Latine community experiences particular challenges as they are prime targets of racism and xenophobia. The social construction of immigrants as a “threat” and “criminals” shapes political responses to migration and allows for the use of extreme practices, such as long detention periods, inhumane conditions, and other violations of human rights. As clinical social workers, a focus on the political and social context means that interventions can both be tailored to the individual or family’s particular lived experience and focus on changing the structural conditions that create trauma. This article highlights several theoretical and global perspectives …

Bank Lending Channel Effectiveness –Potential Lessons For Monetary Policy, Filip Świtała, Iwona Kowalska, Karolina Malajkat
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
The article supplements the research on the effectiveness of monetary policy transmission – especially through the bank lending channel. The current study focuses on assessing the transmission of monetary impulses through commercial and cooperative banks as well as through individual loan portfolios, while distinguishing between the fact that they were granted by commercial and cooperative banks. How a change in the central bank’s interest rates may determine a change in the volume of loans in the economy remains the core question of the research.
Lack Of School Choice And The Mental Health Of Rural Parents: A Phenomenological Study, Lisa Deforest Holland
Lack Of School Choice And The Mental Health Of Rural Parents: A Phenomenological Study, Lisa Deforest Holland
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of parents whose children have limited educational options in rural North Carolina. The theory chosen to guide this study was choice theory, founded by William Glasser, as it explains that all behavior including reactions to others’ choices, and the body’s reaction to stress are chosen by the individual (Glasser, 2001). Additionally, choice theory recognizes the basic needs of survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun, and their impact on behavior which Maslow identified in his hierarchy of needs model (Glasser Institute for Choice Theory, n.d.). Parents want to …

This study will investigate how spirituality is used as a coping skill …
Being Present Without Being Present: An Internet-Based Approach To Providing Pastoral Counseling To An Always Online Generation, Stephen Lyon Woolverton
Being Present Without Being Present: An Internet-Based Approach To Providing Pastoral Counseling To An Always Online Generation, Stephen Lyon Woolverton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The increasing reliance that Millennials and Gen-Z Christians have on the internet for almost every question that comes up in their lives should be viewed by pastoral counselors as a cultural context that need to be understood as part of the counseling process and not an obstacle to the counseling process. The emergence of the internet, and the part that it has played in the culture of American Christians who have grown up with constant access to this avenue of communication, has only recently begun to be seen and utilized by pastoral counselors. This research uses the perspective of a …

The Etiology Of A New Era: Where Heroes Become Zeros And Victims Become Villains, Traci Jo Harmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The United States is in a state of turmoil. Unlike any time before this, division in the country is overtaking the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest threat to life and liberty. Previous research is contradictive in identifying the etiology of anti-police rhetoric, anti-Christian rhetoric, and victim-blaming. The current research attempts to find out if mainstream and or social media is the etiology of the racial, religious, and victim division in The United States. Attitudes towards law enforcement, Christians, and victims were measured against platforms for current events, hours per day on mainstream and social media, age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Significant …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the complex nature of modern cyber threats to propose the establishment of cyber as an interdisciplinary field of public policy initiated through the creation of a symbiotic cybersecurity policy framework. For the public good (and maintaining ideological balance), there must be recognition that public policies are at a transition point where the digital public square is a tangible reality that is more than a collection of technological widgets. The academic contribution of this research project is the fusion of humanistic principles with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that alters our perception of the machine from an …

Exploring Techniques Used To Make Doctor-Recommended Changes In Diet And Exercise For Patients With Cardiac Disease, Amy Rechner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Motivation plays an important role in treatment adherence, as patients should make necessary health behavior changes based on their physician’s recommendations. Self-efficacy and resilience can help/hinder the patient from implementing and maintaining these changes. Previous studies concluded that individuals cannot rely on medication alone and must implement healthy lifestyle changes. However, these changes may be difficult, as the individuals may face physical or emotional barriers. Therefore, it is important to analyze the factors that motivate an individual to overcome these challenges and follow the recommended treatment plan. This qualitative study examined four participants age x-y through in-depth interviews. Three participants, …
The Reported Experience And Stigma Of Mental Health Among African American Clergy, Valentina Stubbs
The Reported Experience And Stigma Of Mental Health Among African American Clergy, Valentina Stubbs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The utilization of mental health treatment in the Black community has been diminished in comparison to other ethnic groups (Avent, Cashwell, & Brown-Jeffy, 2015). Members of the Black Church may have been socialized to seek help from their spiritual leader as opposed to mental health professionals. A transcendental phenomenological qualitative study (Moustakas, 1994) was used to gain an understanding of how twelve (5 male and 7 female) Black clergy experience mental health and the stigma relating to mental health. The participants completed a survey and a semi-structured interview with the researcher and described their experience with mental health issues personally …

Several theories were used to conduct this study, including Social Cognitive Theory, Social …
The Role Of Value Congruence On Millennial Employee Organizational Commitment, Victoria Henry Weatherbee
The Role Of Value Congruence On Millennial Employee Organizational Commitment, Victoria Henry Weatherbee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Recent studies have indicated that employee value congruence may influence the overall organizational commitment of a workforce. Despite the current research, there remains a gap in understanding how the Millennial generation of employees may compare to other generations in the values they hold. As the Millennial generation of employees continues to grow into the biggest working population, older workers are beginning to leave the organizations. This transition combined with the evolution of cultural norms and an ever-increasing workforce across nations are requiring organizational leaders to reexamine how to retain Millennial employees in a meaningful way. While studies have focused on …

Exploring The Relationship Between Mothers And Daughters As It Directly Impacts Social Media Use And Body Image From An Adolescent’S Perspective, Desiree Winslow Saleh
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how adolescent females between the ages of thirteen and nineteen feel and think about their relationship with their mothers, and examine how this impacts social media use and body image. Although greatly and typically applied to quantitative research studies, the tripartite influence model of body image was the primary theory that guided this study. With the immediate accessibility to social media platforms, young women are recognizing a decline in their body satisfaction. Social media serves as another social pressure for adolescents to navigate and is filtered through their pre-existing perceptions of …
Community Adaptations To Wildfire Risk In Central Oregon, Usa: An Empirical Study Of Inclusionary Practices In Collaborative Wildfire Risk Mitigation, Liam Resener
Dissertations and Theses
Adverse impacts of wildfire in Western North America have become increasingly present through the 21st century, driven by landscape changes imposed by colonists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Community adaptations to wildfire will be necessary through the 21st century to restore landscapes and protect the safety and livelihoods of people who live in at-risk areas. Wildfire risk extends across countless environmental and social systems, and individuals have competing ideas about what constitutes that risk and how to best adapt to it. As resources are being allocated to community adaptations, important questions emerge about the values …
