Calladita No Te Ves Más Bonita: Cultural Practices Within Latina Women’S Advocacy, Gabriela Córdova
Calladita No Te Ves Más Bonita: Cultural Practices Within Latina Women’S Advocacy, Gabriela Córdova
Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship
Historically, Latina women-led advocacy groups have faced significant underrepresentation within academia, leading to an erasure of their experiences and contributions. For this reason, it is imperative to take on a thorough analysis that respects the nuances of Latina women's advocacy. In recognizing how their identities enable them to bring about meaningful change, we see the Latina woman's role as an agent of advocacy. Therefore, this exploratory research study investigates the incorporation of cultural practices within two Latina-led organizations in Chicago, Amigas Latinas, and Mujeres Latinas En Acción, from the mid-20th century to the present. I employ Anita Tijerina Revilla's Muxerista …

Automating Intended Target Identification For Paraphasias In Discourse Using A Large Language Model, Alexandra C. Salem, Robert Gale, Mikala S. Fleegle, Gerasimos Fergadiotis, Steven Bedrick
Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Purpose:
To date, there are no automated tools for the identification and fine-grained classification of paraphasias within discourse, the production of which is the hallmark characteristic of most people with aphasia (PWA). In this work, we fine-tune a large language model (LLM) to automatically predict paraphasia targets in Cinderella story retellings.
Method:
Data consisted of 332 Cinderella story retellings containing 2,489 paraphasias from PWA, for which research assistants identified their intended targets. We supplemented these training data with 256 sessions from control participants, to which we added 2,415 synthetic paraphasias. We conducted four experiments using different training data configurations to …

Safest Kid (A Sexual Assault Framework In Education To Support Trauma In Kids With Intellectual Disability): Delphi Study Development Of A Model And Utilization, Ashley M. Hudson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a grave need for additions to the school psychologist’s toolbox to support students with intellectual disability (ID) and sexual trauma. These children are especially vulnerable to adverse life experiences overall and are at a particularly high risk of experiencing sexual abuse and resulting trauma. Children with ID are less likely to have their trauma symptoms identified by those around them, as symptoms do not always present in the same way as their neurotypical peers and trauma symptoms are more likely to be grouped into the rest of their disability through diagnostic overshadowing. Additionally, individuals with ID are at …
Putting It Gently: The Other Side Of A Peace Corps Volunteer Experience, Nicole Jacobson
Putting It Gently: The Other Side Of A Peace Corps Volunteer Experience, Nicole Jacobson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Peace Corps is a transformative experience for many young Americans. The majority of volunteers have worthwhile services they remember fondly; however, these experiences are not always positive. The Peace Corps is a Cold War initiative that uses soft power techniques to further American exceptionalism, capitalism, and the modernization theory of development. The goal of this project was to understand what factors led to the negative experiences of Peace Corps Volunteers. I conducted an ethnography that focused on online communities, semi-structured interviews, Peace Corps memoirs, and news articles to understand Peace Corps Volunteers’ experiences and the organizational culture where they …

Utahns See Air Quality As A Problem, But Don't Feel They Can Do Much About It, Sydney O'Shay, Cris Meier, Bailey Hughlett
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Air pollution is associated with 6.7 million premature deaths worldwide each year. Air pollution shortens Utahns’ life expectancy by two years, costs Utah’s economy $1.8 billion annually, and can cause and worsen many illnesses and conditions. Several factors play a role in people’s decisions or ability to act to reduce the harms of air pollution. This study investigated Utahns’ perception of risk around air pollution, confidence to enact behaviors to protect themselves against the effects of air pollution, and the actual protective behaviors in which they are engaging. Understanding how Utahn’s think about these factors is key for developing strategic …

Air Pollution Associated With Perception Of Increased Health Risks For People Living With Disabilities In Utah, Bosede Adejugbe, Gabriele Ciciurkaite, Sydney O'Shay, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Air quality is one of the top environmental concerns for Utahns today1. Health risks associated with air pollution can range from mild physiological impacts to death from cardiovascular and respiratory disease2-4. Little is known about the ways that environmental risks impact people with disabilities because they are often excluded from clinical and social science research6. Gaining a more robust understanding of air pollution’s impacts on people living with disabilities (PLwD) is particularly important considering that PLwD comprise about 32.2%5 of the U.S. population and 22% of Utah’s population, the latter of which is …

Perceptions Of Childcare In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska, Rebecca J. Vogt, Heather Akin, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Bradley D. Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Steven A. Schulz
Nebraska Rural Poll
Lack of childcare is an issue in many rural Nebraska communities. According to a report from Voices for Children, most counties in the state (91%) do not have enough available licensed childcare slots to meet the current demand there. Furthermore, 11 counties in the state have no licensed childcare facilities. Many communities are exploring options of how to address these shortages to maintain their current residents or to be able to attract new residents. Given these challenges, what types of childcare are rural Nebraskans currently using? How far do they drive to get to their childcare? And how do rural …

How Affected Family Members Communicate About Their Loved One’S Non-Medical Opioid Use, Suzanne Brown, Sydney O'Shay, Emily Pasman, Danielle Hicks, Elizabeth Agius, Stella M. Resko
Publications
Family members of people who misuse opioids frequently experience stigma due to their association with non-medical opioid use (NMOU). Stigma may affect how family members communicate about NMOU and seek social support. Guided by communication privacy management theory, this study sought to understand how affected family members (AFMs) communicate about NMOU within and outside of the immediate family. In-depth interviews were conducted with 34 adults with an immediate relative with NMOU. Qualitative analyses utilized a common iterative approach. Findings identified complex dialectical tensions that families traverse in both wanting to conceal stigmatizing information while simultaneously wanting to disclose information to …
Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld
Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Burnout has elicited growing interest among occupational health specialists in recent decades. Since 2019, the World Health Organization has characterized burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic, unmanageable workplace stress. Accordingly, three symptoms define the entity: (i) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; (ii) increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism towards one’s job; and (iii) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. We call into question the definition of burnout embodied in the Maslach Burnout Inventory and incorporated into the ICD-11. We draw stakeholders’ attention to the fact that burnout’s symptoms and etiology …

Teach A Man To Fish Or Nourish Them To Grow? Debating Delivering Owned Articles Through Document Delivery Services, Rosemary Humphrey, Renna Redd
Presentations
The age-old proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime” has been used for years in libraries when it comes to discussing how far to go when helping researchers obtain the materials they need. Educating library users on how to find reliable information resources is our shared ultimate goal, but how much should we realistically expect them to know and retain when ILSs are increasingly complicated, inaccurate, and full of library-centric jargon? The presenters will share the results of a survey they administered …

Office of Health Promotion Scholarship
When considering peri-and-post natal health, there are several biopsychosocial risk factors at play. Biological, psychological, and social health factors are significant in contributing to maternal wellbeing and influencing maternal morbidity/mortality [1]. The Covid-19 pandemic had significant impacts on general populations and on vulnerable groups such as pre-peri-and-post natal women [2]. In previous epidemics, pregnant women were reluctant to attend hospitals and doctors’ appointments due to fear of infection [3]. Covid-19 has shown similar effects [2] and as such, risks associated with the pregnancy lifecycle have increased. A phenomenological investigation found themes of women experiencing negative healthcare, struggles with self-advocacy, heightened …

Collection Assessment: Taming The Beast, Renna Redd
Presentations
At Clemson University, each subject librarian has a yearly goal to perform collection assessment and development duties as part of their work with their assigned departments; however, CU Libraries has been without a dedicated Collection Development and/or Management Librarian since prior to the pandemic. As a result, collection development, management, and assessment activities are somewhat piecemeal due to a lack of time, support, and staffing. After a library-wide reorganization in 2022, a 25% time position was created for an existing librarian to take on collection-related duties and start a formal collection assessment program with subject librarians. The Collections Sharing and …

“Mere Guesswork”: Clarifying The Role Of Intelligence, Mentality, And Psychometric Testing In The Diagnosis Of “Mental Defectives” For Sterilization In Alberta From 1929 To 1972., Elliott M. Reichardt, Henderikus J. Stam, Kim Tan-Macneill
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications
From 1929 until 1972, the Alberta Eugenics Board (the Board) recommended that 4,739 individuals be sterilized. The original 1928 act that legalized eugenic sterilization stipulated that the surgery itself required the consent of the individual or their caregiver; however, in 1937, the Alberta government removed the consent requirement for such cases where the Board determined individual patients to be “mental defectives.” By analyzing published reports, case histories, medical journals, and primary sources from the Board, we situate the concept of “mental defective” in a historical context to clarify the Board’s diagnostic process. By analyzing how the Board found individuals to …

It Takes an Ecosystem: Understanding the People, Places, and Possibilities of Learning and Development Across Settings, edited by Thomas Akiva and Kimberly H. Robinson, is a call to take a holistic and dynamic ecosystem approach to thinking about, designing, developing, and investing in the allied youth fields to more equitably and effectively support young people’s learning and development. Published in 2022, the volume outlines a vision for out-of-school time programs and systems, schools, community-based organizations, and the public sector to move beyond focusing separately on individual systems to a learning and development ecosystem approach that more accurately and inclusively reflects …
Perceived Impact Of Mtss Coaches On Tier 2 Reading Intervention Fidelity, Kari Vollrath
Perceived Impact Of Mtss Coaches On Tier 2 Reading Intervention Fidelity, Kari Vollrath
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Administrators face decisions in prioritizing educational needs and goals for schools. Leaders determine the human capacity necessary to implement the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). Using a nonexperimental quantitative study, the study examines the fidelity of Tier 2 reading interventions at sites with and without MTSS coaches. Coaching is one of the drivers of the science of implementation that produces successful outcomes when implemented with fidelity. Secondary data from six kindergarten through fifth grade elementary schools in a Midwest district were analyzed for the study. The secondary data demonstrates the extent MTSS coaches impacted the implementation of Tier 2 reading …

Affect Theory, The Perceived Impact Of Judicial Diversity, And The Gender Pay Gap In The Irish Legal Profession, Caoimhe Kiernan
Books/Book Chapters
This chapter investigates how affect theory can be used as a framework when examining judicial diversity, along with how affect theory can be used to help explore the impact of increasing gender diversity on the Irish bench. This chapter will first examine the current gender pay gap in the Irish legal profession, the status of women in Ireland throughout the 20th Century, recount the women’s movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s and discuss the appointment of the first women judges to Irish courts. Affect theory will then be explored, including how affect theory can be applied as a framework when …

How Attachment Styles Affect Our Perception Of Daily Activities, Hannah Foley, Harry Lackey, Ella Marks, Wyatt Swaim, Maddie Rowe
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Existing research indicates that social functioning (i.e., emotional motives, social interaction, relationships, interpersonal goals) is associated with personal attachment style (Locke, 2008) and avoidance in emerging adults. Furthermore, attachment styles of individuals can predict daily activities and personal motives (Springstein et al., 2023). While evidence has pointed to interpersonal risk (i.e., physiological safety versus threat) and a sense of security, research has yet to explore these variables in the relationship between attachment styles and helping other individuals in social settings in university students. For our research, we wanted to expand on this past research and test the effects of daily …
Politics And Country Music: Analyzing Why Country Music Is Associated With The Political Right, Christa Noe
Politics And Country Music: Analyzing Why Country Music Is Associated With The Political Right, Christa Noe
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
The general perception that country music aligns itself with the political right is perhaps most exemplified by the songs, “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)” by Toby Keith and “Okie from Muskogee” by Merle Haggard. Both songs speak of patriotic values that are traditionally associated with that side of politics. However, At the same time, some country songs, particularly older music, align more with the political left, such as “Man in Black” by Johnny Cash and “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton. Nadine Hubbs (2014) has shown how country music is often associated with the poor …

Yes, it can make or break a society. Elites are an inevitability in society. In recent years, emerging populist movements across different countries have highlighted stark problems with growing.
