Families Of Terminally Ill Cancer Patients, Jenna Aalbers, Grace Laman
Student Projects
Cancer is an illness that does not only impact the patient, but also the people around them. It can be especially difficult for families who are affected as it impacts the lifestyles of everyone. Approximately 1.9 million new cancer cases are expected each year to occur in the United States, so this is an issue that will continue to be prevalent. (American Cancer Society, 2022). Research has shown that there are many effective methods that can be used to help families. This includes methods such as family-based dignity intervention (FBDI), meditation, and open communication strategies. It is important for social …
Housing As Asset And Payment: Construction, Speculation, And Financialization At The European Periphery, Smoki Musaraj
Housing As Asset And Payment: Construction, Speculation, And Financialization At The European Periphery, Smoki Musaraj
Sociology & Anthropology Open Access Publications
Construction booms have dominated Albania's economy and politics since the late 1990s. These booms continued even during times of illiquidity. One of the sources of financing construction in Albania is the practice of klering (in-kind payments). In this practice, developers pay subcontractors in (future) apartments in exchange for materials and labor. I argue that, in klering transactions, housing serves as an asset and a means of payment. The practice of klering emerged at the interface of postcommunist transformations, neoliberal reforms, and the fetishization of housing as an asset of more durable and multifaceted economic and cultural value. While grounded in …

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to immigration policies in Indonesia. The government has implemented various measures, such as a temporary ban on the entry of foreigners and tightened border control, to prevent the spread of the virus. However, the implementation of these policies faces several obstacles, including inadequate infrastructure and overlapping authorities. Therefore, this research aims to examine the post-pandemic implementation of immigration policies, focusing on the role of migration infrastructure and the effectiveness of border control. The research findings indicate that both physical and information technology infrastructure play a central role in supporting policy implementation. On the …

Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nonmedical use of prescription stimuluants (NMUS) can cause adverse outcomes for college students including academic impediments, such as a lowered GPA, and polyuse of illicit substances (Garcia et al., 2021; Holt & McCarthy, 2019; Norman & Ford, 2018). The current study investigated the demographics, academics, stress, and polysubstance use between students who endorsed NMUS and those who did not in an undergraduate college population sample at a large public university in the Southeast. The sample consisted of 429 undergraduate students who completed online measures of demographics, perceived stress, stressful life events, and substance use. Overall, 3.4% of the sample reported …

The population of those in prison is increasing, and many of those who are in prison have families. Much research has been done on the effect prison has on prisoners, but not as much has looked at the children and what the effect is of having a parent, specifically their father, who is absent in prison. It is important to understand the possible behaviors, risks, and challenges that children face. This research essay looks at what it is like for children between the ages of 5 and 10 to have a father in minimum security prison while also examining the …

Compression clothes are marketed to relieve anxiety and decrease hyperactivity in children with autism. However, few studies have examined the impact of compression for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, nine children with autism were observed during Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy sessions while wearing compression clothing. The participants were randomly assigned to wear compression clothing for either their first five sessions or their last five sessions. Videos of the therapy sessions were reviewed and each child’s “off task” behavior was identified in the following domains: motor, verbal, and visual. In addition, frequency of the child’s repetitive behaviors …

The federal legislation known as the farm bill encompasses all things related to agriculture and food. This includes not only farm income safety net and conservation programs that typically come to mind when thinking about the farm bill, but also domestic food assistance programs (like SNAP), rural development (providing funding for items like broadband service, utilities, and housing programs) as well as programs that are focused on specific producers and crops. Given the variety of programs it entails, how familiar are rural Nebraskans with the farm bill and federal agricultural policy? Do rural Nebraskans support federal spending on the various …

Several studies have reported that the coronavirus pandemic has contributed to the rise in stress, anxiety, and depression levels among college students. This has left mental health professionals at a loss and overwhelmed with the number of new cases during this time. Research has been conducted and has found that these levels have risen because of the pandemic, the lock down, personal factors, and their new learning environment which includes academics as well. Most of the research that has been done focuses on before the pandemic and during the pandemic, but not much research has been conducted for after the …

As climate change begins to have a greater impact on human and natural life, investing in green infrastructure has never been more important. New York’s Climate Smart Communities program is widespread, but adoption rates vary greatly throughout the state …

Students often choose to pursue a business major during their post-secondary education to increase their chances of securing employment post-graduation. However, evidence suggests that many recent business degree graduates struggle with underemployment, highlighting the importance of examining how post-secondary institutions can better prepare students for the transition to work. In the current study, we investigated how including a personal strengths-driven intervention, the Reflected Best Self Exercise (RBSE), in management curricula may help better prepare students for securing employment by increasing students’ confidence in their ability to succeed in an employment interview (i.e., by enhancing interview self-efficacy). Using a pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental …
