Potentiating Effects Of Interim Tests And Metacognitive Judgments On Future Learning, Hunter Ray Vannaman
Potentiating Effects Of Interim Tests And Metacognitive Judgments On Future Learning, Hunter Ray Vannaman
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Interpolated tests benefit retention of both tested material and material learned afterward. One proposed mechanism for the potentiating effect of testing involves the learner gleaning metacognitive information from tests regarding how well the material is being learned, curbing overconfidence and influencing future encoding strategies. The current study investigated whether making judgments of learning (JOLs) may similarly induce metacognitive introspection and benefit learning. An online sample of 464 adults from the United States was randomly assigned to one of three interim task conditions and one of three JOL conditions that determined how they would interact with each of the four text …
Fostering Multiliteracies And Engagement With Multimodal Texts In The Secondary English Language Arts Classroom, Amanda J. Hargis
Fostering Multiliteracies And Engagement With Multimodal Texts In The Secondary English Language Arts Classroom, Amanda J. Hargis
Graduate Research Papers
This study underscores the potential of multimodal texts to enhance student engagement and understanding in high school English Language Arts classrooms. While student preferences for different text formats varied, challenges remain in how to connect classic literature to contemporary students. However, the integration of multimodal resources can offer valuable opportunities for enriching the learning experience. Future research and continued adoption of culturally sustaining pedagogies in instructional practices will be key to maximizing the benefits of multimodal texts in diverse educational settings.

An Autoethnographic Dialogue With Motherhood Literature, Maya Autret, Brad Van Eeden-Moorefield
An Autoethnographic Dialogue With Motherhood Literature, Maya Autret, Brad Van Eeden-Moorefield
The Qualitative Report
This autoethnography represents the first author’s journey as a mother and doctoral student researching mothers’ experiences in contending with the demands of work and family. Reading across different pockets of empirical motherhood literature (work-family conflict, contemporary motherhood, maternal gatekeeping, and intensive motherhood) I became troubled by how women’s realities were reflected. Pushing back against traditional methods that endorse separating my researcher identity from my maternal self, I draw on autoethnographic method to dialogue with this literature. This approach empowers me to speak out as a novice scholar uncomfortable with aspects of literature, while also navigating training in the use of …
An Analysis Of Post-War Economic Growth In The Balkans, Edina Tahirovic
An Analysis Of Post-War Economic Growth In The Balkans, Edina Tahirovic
Honors Program Theses
When examining the economies of several former Yugoslav countries, presently known as the Balkans, it is essential to consider the economic development that occurred in the aftermath of the region’s civil wars. This paper analyzes the factors influencing post-war economic development in the former Yugoslav countries using statistical regression analysis of panel data collected from 2002 to 2019. In this model, I selected variables based on previous research and theories that underscored their importance. To explain post-war economic development, I tested variables such as foreign direct investments, unemployment, migration, trade, corruption, the Gini index, personal remittances, and population. The results …
Small Business Burnout: Reversing The Entrepreneurial Exit, Adele Kuruppu
Small Business Burnout: Reversing The Entrepreneurial Exit, Adele Kuruppu
Honors Program Theses
This thesis aims to review the current literature on entrepreneurial burnout, identify critical issues, evaluate and assess the research findings, and produce a plan for both new and experienced entrepreneurs to both avoid and minimize burnout. As a business and entrepreneurship student interested in opening a small business myself, I have become drawn to the topic of burnout and how it affects the family dynamic. Qualitative interviews revealed correlations between entrepreneurial characteristics and burnout as well as work-family conflict and burnout. By drawing from current literature and insight from small business owners, this study seeks to identify fundamental causes, symptoms, …
The Effect Of Gender-Based Occupational Segregation On Women's Earnings In The United States And Canada, Jadyn Grace Milius
The Effect Of Gender-Based Occupational Segregation On Women's Earnings In The United States And Canada, Jadyn Grace Milius
Honors Program Theses
The gender wage gap continues to prove a contentious topic with some going as far as to question its existence. However, scholarly works continue to prove it is real and impactful. More fruitful debates have arisen about the source of this disparity in wages. This paper seeks to analyze one possible explanation for the pay gap: gender-based occupational segregation. I used OLS regressions based on women working full-time between the ages of sixteen and sixty-five to measure this. I find a negative effect of segregated occupations on women’s earnings across countries and years. On a similar note, the percentage of …

The Supreme Court’s recent opinion in Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy invalidated the SEC’s mechanism for adjudicating fraud claims seeking civil penalties on the ground that the adjudications violated the Seventh Amendment. To explain that conclusion, the Court invoked, among other sources…Baron de Montesquieu (who was quoted by Alexander Hamilton after all!) and William Blackstone. Debates about constitutional interpretation are often peppered with references to a few Enlightenment thinkers, such as Montesquieu, Blackstone, and John Locke. Indeed, even nonconstitutional interpretation debates are as well; in the Court’s recent decision overturning Chevron deference, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, Justice …

In recent years, young people engaged in political discourse and civic action online. U.S.-based social movements centered on equity issues, such as Black Lives Matter, Dreamers, and March for Our Lives, engaged young people in shaping and publicizing the goals of these movements through digital platforms. Increasingly in communities at the margins, young Americans need digital and media literacy skills to supplement contentious education restrictions within the United States, as with many state bills curtailing the teaching of LGBTQIA+ histories and critical race theory. With these considerations in mind, our team conducted a national study of impactful media literacy in …

Perspective: The Evolution Of Hormones And Person Perception-A Quantitative Genetic Framework, Christopher I Gurguis, Tyler S Kimm, Teresa A Pigott
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Evolutionary biology provides a unifying theory for testing hypotheses about the relationship between hormones and person perception. Person perception usually receives attention from the perspective of sexual selection. However, because person perception is one trait in a suite regulated by hormones, univariate approaches are insufficient. In this Perspectives article, quantitative genetics is presented as an important but underutilized framework for testing evolutionary hypotheses within this literature. We note tacit assumptions within the current literature on psychiatric genetics, which imperil the interpretation of findings thus far. As regulators of a diverse manifold of traits, hormones mediate tradeoffs among an array of …

Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This IVMF research brief delves into the challenges veterans confront when moving from military to civilian life, where stark cultural disparities exist. These veterans often grapple with fulfilling fundamental psychological needs such as structure and belonging, compounded by civilian reliance on stereotypes. The brief integrates diverse disciplines like social psychology and military psychology, using theories like compensatory control to dissect the psychological obstacles faced by veterans. Recent research within this framework sheds light on these issues, offering valuable insights for clinicians and managers to develop tailored interventions. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, this research brief highlights the significance of understanding and supporting …

Research Review: "Reculturation: A New Perspective On Military-Civilian Transition Stress", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This IVMF research review identifies challenges in veterans' transition to civilian life, despite available support. It highlights mental health issues like suicidality and low life satisfaction, possibly linked to cultural identity conflicts. Veterans' attempts to address this may lead to feelings of isolation, impacting mental health. The authors recommend studying immigrant acculturation experiences to understand veterans' identity struggles, proposing "reculturation" as a term. They advocate for clinical psychology to prioritize understanding this process to improve program engagement and suicide prevention. This review also looks at implications for policy, practice, and future research.
Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert
Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Background
Nothing causes more anguish and frustration than downward social mobility such as that experienced by less-educated workers and especially by displaced workers. Those who lose economic status lose more than income because they become so socially isolated that they are further frustrated through loneliness (Case and Deaton 2020). Hanna Arendt points out that lonely men are susceptible to authoritarian influence (1973, p. 475).
There is yet another aspect to the downward social mobility of low skilled men, namely that they are losing ground not only relative to social norms but also relative to the wages of low-skilled women. In …

After two pandemic-impacted academic years, the University of Louisville’s Libraries Student Advisory Board (LSAB) was starting to feel stagnant. Meetings that had previously included hands-on activities, lively conversation, and free food had settled into the virtual meeting doldrums. Attendance was down and conversation felt stilted, despite the librarian facilitator devoting additional time and effort to preparing for each meeting. In an effort to improve engagement among the group and better understand the continued relevance of advisory groups in the current moment, the author undertook a series of interviews with other advisory group facilitators. Results from these interviews were used to …

The research in this IVMF review introduces an enhanced framework and practical model for evaluating the well-being of post-9/11 veterans as they transition back to civilian life. Data analysis spanning 2.5 years from a substantial cohort of post-9/11 veterans revealed varied experiences during their transition: while some exhibited progress, notably in employment, others faced stagnation or decline, particularly in physical health. Even in areas of improvement, a significant portion of veterans continued to encounter challenges, with mental health issues affecting 34% at a certain study juncture. Furthermore, specific demographics such as enlisted personnel, women, and people of color were disproportionately …

This report seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies presented by the Veterans Education Task Force in 2014. These strategies were: 1) establishing an annual Veterans Training Academy to train faculty and staff from higher education institutions on effectively supporting student veterans; 2) providing competitive funding grants to incentivize the development of innovative programs aimed at recruiting and retaining student veterans until degree completion; and 3) creating a comprehensive online educational resource, including a program to translate military service into college credits, to assist student veterans in their academic pursuits. This comprehensive evaluation, funded through the Veteran Reconnect Grant …

Research Review: "The Military Separated Me; You Cannot Connect Me", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research review covers a paper which critiques the term “military-connected” for inadequately representing veterans, survivors, and caregivers, and advocates for more precise terminology that reflects their distinct identities. By employing Veteran Critical Theory and Pragmatic Theory, the study highlights how current labels fail to capture the unique experiences and needs of these groups. The authors recommend refining language in both support services and policy to better address these individuals' specific challenges and suggest further research to explore the impact of accurate terminology.

The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts
The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts
Publications and Research
This review essay critically examines cultural explanations of deterrence and coercion, focusing on Dmitry Adamsky’s The Russian Way of Deterrence as the most important recent effort to explain Russian strategic behavior through the lens of strategic culture. While recognizing the book’s considerable strengths in describing Russian concepts, terminology, and practices of deterrence and coercion, the essay questions how much explanatory leverage culture actually provides. It argues that cultural approaches risk over-complexifying the Russian case while under-specifying causal relationships, and asks why distinctive strategic cultures do not produce greater variation in coercive behavior and outcomes. The essay contrasts cultural interpretation with …

This research examines human security issues of low-income migrant workers in Singapore as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted stakeholder interviews and a review of secondary data, which were deductively analysed using themes adopted from a United Nations Development Programme human security framework. This research found that while several efforts by civil society and the government have been assessed to make a lasting, positive impact on human security, other areas may still have fallen short. We suggest that despite efforts to address the immediate needs of migrant workers, structural changes are needed to create a lasting impact on …
