Sudden gains, or rapid symptom reductions between two consecutive sessions, have been shown to predict better psychotherapy outcomes, especially for depression (e.g., Shalom & Aderka, 2020). However, several gaps remain in the existing literature on sudden gains, including underrepresentation of naturalistic studies and the circularity critique that it is tautological to examine symptom reduction during treatment as a predictor for overall pre to post-treatment symptom improvements. Furthermore, little is known about whether and which extra-therapeutic factors, or factors that exist within a client’s life outside treatment, are associated with sudden gains. This collection contains material documenting Miriam Howard Stearns’ life at Bridgewater Normal School (BNS) during her time of study from 1921-1924, and later life after BNS. Included are her student notebooks and classwork from the Kindergarten Primary (K-P) program; club materials related to the Glee Club, Women’s Athletic Organization (W.A.A.), and Beta Gamma Sorority; photographs of her K-P classes, friends, her father Louis C. Stearns, and campus facilities; and handmade K-P instruction books. Many items reflect major school events, such as Initiation Day, the 1924 campus fire, class reunions, 1940s centennials, and aspects of student life through photographs and pamphlets.

Disabled individuals face rampant discrimination in the form of ableist microaggressions (Kattari, 2019) and healthcare neglect (Komisar et al., 2005; Power & Bartlett, 2019), yet research on the impact of ableism on well-being is lacking. Watermeyer (2012) posits that disabled people employ necessary defensive strategies to cope with the reality of such oppressive confounds, such as Winnicott’s False Self (1960)—the artificial persona one consciously or unconsciously employs to protect oneself from social rejection. Despite many treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recovery is often moderate at best. and symptoms often persist after treatment. This mixed-method study explored whether an active imagination protocol could serve as an effective low-cost, drug-free intervention for complex PTSD or persisting symptoms after a traumatic event. Seventeen participants were assessed using the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Multiscale Dissociation Inventory (MDI), and the Ryff Scales of Psychological Wellbeing (PWB) before and after a four-session, one-to-one active imagination intervention. On average, all quantitative scores significantly improved from baseline, and every subscale improved. For the sample average, PTSD symptoms decreased by 32%, …

Average fastball velocity throughout Major League Baseball has increased dramatically over the previous 15 years. This research examines the factors leading to this increase and provides a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether throwing consistently at high velocities is worth the injury risks, compared to financial benefits, from the player perspective. Additionally, this analysis examines if paying hard-throwing pitchers is worth the monetary risk from a team executive’s perspective, due to increases in leaguewide throwing injury rates. Using Korean firms that are cross-listed in the US market, this paper investigates whether there are standalone effects of geographic and market proximity of institutional investors on monitoring performance. We find that Korean institutional ownership is negatively associated with earnings management while the US institutional ownership has no impact on earnings management. This suggests that there is the geographic proximity advantage over the market proximity advantage in the emerging markets. Furthermore, we also show that the impact of geographic proximity is stronger for firms with high informational opacity

Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) is a form of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) typically employed as a bridging treatment in hospital settings. Research shows that prolonged BIPAP use can be associated with reduced patient satisfaction and adverse consequences. The purpose of this study was to reduce days spent on BiPAP to improve the quality of patient care. This thesis describes two projects: i) experiments aimed at electrochemically differentiating polyvalent binding and monovalent binding of “DNA stars” on gold electrodes ii) experiments to synthesize DNA oligonucleotides that are capable of crosslinking under electrochemical control. We describe the design, synthesis and purification of “DNA stars”, and their binding to gold electrodes displaying complementary strands functionalized with a “redox reporter”, methylene blue. Square wave voltammetry was utilized to compare the effect of binding of complementary strand and various DNA stars. To determine optimal psychotherapy doses, researchers commonly rely on one of two competing theories, the Dose-Effect (DE) or the Good-Enough Level (GEL) models, to guide their research. Which model one selects is clinically meaningful, as the models have conflicting evidentiary support. Thus, it is essential to ascertain which theoretical model best fits empirical data. The present study compares the applicability and fit of the DE and GEL theories using total sessions and weeks in treatment as predictors within a community-based, unlimited-duration psychotherapy clinic. The current study examined the impact of an online-simulated DP training component on the competency among trainees, and parent-reported child outcomes after brief, virtual BPT.
