Most police searches today are authorized by citizens’ consent, rather than probable cause or reasonable suspicion. The main constitutional limitation on so-called “consent searches” is the voluntariness test: whether a reasonable person would have felt free to refuse the officer’s request to conduct the search. We investigate whether this legal inquiry is subject to a systematic bias whereby uninvolved decision-makers overstate the voluntariness of consent and underestimate the psychological pressure individuals feel to comply. Bioregional Inventory Originated Simulation Under Management (BioSum) is software from the US Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. It is a complex analysis framework that models and evaluates forest management treatments across multi-decade timeframes. Originally written to work with Microsoft Access databases, BioSum is migrating to the use of SQLite as its database engine. The final module of BioSum, Treatment Optimizer, is the first one to be converted so the changes can be implemented incrementally. Gender is an important component of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) pedagogy in public affairs, yet gender remains largely absent from public affairs education in three central ways: how courses are structured, the content of courses, and the practice of pedagogy. This article explains the value and need for gender equitable pedagogy in public affairs curricula. We conduct a descriptive analysis of scholarship and best practices from leading think tanks and public advocacy research organizations. Ultimately, this work provides recommendations to strengthen gender equity pedagogy both inside the classroom and in public sector workplaces.

A Constellation Approach To Understanding Extremist White Supremacy, Kathleen Blee, Robert Futrell, Pete Simi

Reflecting on long-term intensive ethnographic fieldwork, we sketch a “constellation” framework for understanding U.S. extremist white supremacy. Rather than tracing fluctuating people and organizations to explain the persistence of white supremacist extremism, we suggest that focusing on a core set of practices, ideas, and emotions offers a more complex, nuanced, and useful interpretation. We contrast our constellation framework with more typical “bucket” approaches that tend to compartmentalize a complex reality into categories that do not sufficiently match extremism’s dynamism.

Contests are situations in which agents compete by irreversibly expending costly resources in an attempt to win a prize. Due to their applications in conflict, rent-seeking, organizational incentives, sports, litigation, and political campaigns, contests are widely applied in the social sciences. In this survey we summarize some main results and recent developments of experimental studies in contest theory. We also point out their broader applications in the social sciences.

Background: Given the importance of infancy for establishing growth trajectories, with later-life health consequences, we investigated longitudinal body composition among infants from six economically and ethnically diverse countries.
Methods: We recruited mother-infant dyads using the WHO Multicenter Growth Reference Study criteria. We measured fat-free mass (FFM) in 1393 (49% female) infants from birth to 6 months of age (Australia, India, and South Africa; n = 468), 3-24 months of age (Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka; n = 925), and derived fat mass (FM), fat mass index (FMI), and fat-free mass index (FFMI). This research paper examines the role of the artisan food producer, not just as an entrepreneur and service provider but with a focus on how they contribute to the preservation of Ireland’s food culture and heritage. Using a qualitative methodology and in keeping with a phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of ten artisan food producers from different parts of Ireland. The restaurant review is a quintessential form of gastronomic writing, but it has rarely been studied in terms of its literary form. This paper investigates the literary gestalt of restaurant reviews through a gastrocritical reading of two reviews by the Irish restaurant critic Helen Lucy Burke. It concludes that restaurant reviews typically include mimesis and evocative descriptions, a meal plot, inherent tension due to the performance character of the restaurant meal and incorporation anxiety, and a combination of phenomenological and ethnographic reporting. Drone flies, Eristalis tenax (Diptera: Syrphidae), are important generalist pollinators and visit flowers globally that range widely in color. The flies’ photoreceptors allow them to sense light wavelengths between 300-600 nm and E. tenax exhibit a positive phototactic response. To understand the effects of light on E. tenax movement, we conducted two-choice behavioral tests to determine their phototactic response to different wavelengths of light across the spectrum (ultraviolet to red light, plus full spectrum white light). Several papers estimate the time series properties of bitcoin prices. However, to know that bubbles occur, an estimate of fundamental value is needed. Few estimates of bitcoin’s fundamental price exist, and these are either statistical in nature or based on questionable economic theory. This paper calculates the non-bubble dollar price of bitcoin using a modification to the quantity theory of money, and it is estimated to be about $54.00. At the November 2021 peak market price of bitcoin, the bubble component was more than 99%. Even at end-August 2023 after bitcoin prices had more than halved, the bubble component was …

This paper investigates the relationship between national culture and the early adoption of Bitcoin. Utilizing a dataset comprised of Google Trends data on Bitcoin search interest for 64 countries, we construct measures of early Bitcoin adoption and examine their correlation with Hofstede's cultural dimension scores. Our findings reveal that in developed countries, lower Masculinity and Long-Term Orientation are associated with earlier Bitcoin adoption. In contrast, developing countries with lower Indulgence are found to adopt Bitcoin early. This paper contributes to the literature by highlighting how different cultural traits, moderated by a country's development status, can influence the Bitcoin early adoption.

The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in defending behavior and the moderating effect of self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation among elementary school (N = 39) who participated in a bullying bystander intervention (STAC). During the intervention, the trainers teach students four strategies they can use to intervene in bullying situations to defend targets (i.e. “Stealing the Show,” “Turning it Over,” “Accompanying Others,” and “Coaching Compassion”). Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that with the exception of “Turning it Over” (i.e. reporting bullying to an adult), self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation moderated the relationship between gender …

Background: The necessary execution of non-pharmaceutical risk-mitigation (NPRM) strategies to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 has created an unprecedented natural experiment to ascertain whether pandemic-induced social-policy interventions may elevate collateral health risks. Here, we assess the efects on violence against women (VAW) of the duration of NPRM measures that were executed through jurisdictional-level orders in the United States. We expect that stay-at-home orders, by reducing mobility and disrupting non-coresident social ties, are associated with higher incident reporting of VAW.

This paper introduces a new measure of the labor markets served by colleges and universities across the United States. About 50 percent of recent college graduates are living and working in the metro area nearest the institution they attended, with this figure climbing to 67 percent in-state. The geographic dispersion of alumni is more than twice as great for highly selective 4-year institutions as for 2-year institutions. However, more than one-quarter of 2-year institutions disperse alumni more diversely than the average public 4-year institution. บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพฤฒพลังด้านการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุในประเทศไทย และปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อความต้องการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุไทยที่มีสุขภาพดี คณะผู้วิจัยใช้ข้อมูลทุติยภูมิจากโครงการการสำรวจขนาดใหญ่ เรื่อง “การเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประชากรและความอยู่ดีมีสุขในบริบทสังคมสูงวัย” โดยวิทยาลัยประชากรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย (2559) ในส่วนของพฤฒพลังด้านการทำงาน คณะผู้วิจัยพบข้อสรุปที่มีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ดังนี้ (1) ประมาณ 1 ใน 4 ของผู้สูงอายุที่มีความต้องการทำงานยังคงไม่ได้ทำงาน (2) ผู้สูงอายุเพศชายมีความต้องการทำงานมากกว่าผู้สูงอายุเพศหญิง และ (3) ผู้สูงอายุที่มีสุขภาพดีมีความต้องการทำงานมากกว่าผู้สูงอายุที่มีสุขภาพต่ำกว่า ระดับดี ทั้งนี้ จากผลการวิเคราะห์ความต้องการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุที่มีสุขภาพดีโดยใช้วิธีการวิเคราะห์การถดถอย โลจิสติกแบบไบนารี พบว่ามีตัวแปรที่มีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.05) ได้แก่ อายุ เพศ ระดับการศึกษา สถานภาพสมรส ความเพียงพอของรายได้ การดูแลสมาชิกในครอบครัว และภูมิภาคที่อยู่อาศัย อย่างไรก็ตาม ในอนาคตควรมีนโยบายที่ส่งเสริมการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุโดยควรยกระดับการศึกษาและการฝึกอบรมทักษะก่อนการเกษียณอายุเพื่อลดช่องว่างความต้องการทำงานที่ไม่ได้รับการตอบสนองของผู้สูงอายุไทย

บทความนี้มุ่งศึกษาปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศ ใช้ระเบียบวิธีการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ มีหน่วยวิเคราะห์ระดับปัจเจก กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศในจังหวัดชัยภูมิ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ประเทศไทย จำนวน 420 คน เก็บข้อมูลเมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2566 ด้วยแบบสัมภาษณ์ที่ผ่านการตรวจสอบความถูกต้องเชิงเนื้อหาและมีค่าความเชื่อมั่น 0.902 วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนาและสถิติถดถอยพหุคูณ ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศมีอายุเฉลี่ย43.6 ปี เป็นชาย ร้อยละ 56.2 และร้อยละ 33.1 จบชั้นประถมศึกษา มากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งไปทำงานต่างประเทศแบบถูกกฎหมาย ในกลุ่มประเทศเอเชียตะวันออก ร้อยละ 94.0 และร้อยละ 52.1 ย้ายถิ่นไปทำงานต่างประเทศเพียง 1 ครั้ง ซึ่งแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับส่วนใหญ่ มากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองในระดับปานกลาง ร้อยละ 53.8 คาดหวังประโยชน์จากการย้ายถิ่นไปทำงานต่างประเทศระดับปานกลาง ร้อยละ 46.4 และแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับมากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งสะสมทักษะชีวิตได้ในระดับปานกลาง เป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่า กว่าร้อยละ 40.0 สะสมทักษะชีวิตได้ในระดับต่ำ นอกจากนี้ พบว่า ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศ ได้แก่ เพศชาย จำนวนปีที่ศึกษา วิธีการย้ายถิ่นแบบถูกกฎหมาย จำนวนครั้งที่ย้ายถิ่น และการเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง โดยทุกตัวแปรสามารถอธิบายการผันแปรของการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศได้ 32.6% (R-square = 0.326)
