Introductory Economics: Gender, Majors, And Future Performance, Natsuki Arai, Shian Chang, Biing-Shen Kuo

By investigating the exam scores of introductory economics classes in the business school at National Chengchi University in Taiwan between 2008 and 2019, we find three sets of results: First, we find no significant difference between genders in the exam scores. Second, students’ majors are significantly associated with their exam scores, which likely reflects their academic ability measured at college admission. Third, the exam scores are strong predictors of students’ future academic performance.

This applied research project aims to deliver specific recommendations for JMU Libraries to consider implementing in its self-paced online onboarding program to increase completion rates, satisfaction, and the perceived relevance of its training for new employees. This qualitative research design uses an interpretive/inductive approach and informant sampling strategy—interviews with five instructional designers—to collect, analyze, and create practicable suggestions for interactive, non-graded activities that can be added to increase the adult learners’ motivation to engage with the content. The themes that emerged in these interviews pointed to three types of activities: reflection, discussion, and authentic tasks. These activities are well supported …

Multilevel service delivery frameworks are approaches to structuring and organizing a spectrum of evidence-based services and supports, focused on assessment, prevention, and intervention designed for the local context. Exemplar frameworks in child mental health include positive behavioral interventions and supports in education, collaborative care in primary care, and systems of care in community mental health settings. Yet, their high-quality implementation has lagged. This work proposes a conceptual foundation for multilevel service delivery frameworks spanning diverse mental health service settings that can inform development of strategic implementation supports. The Gladue report, named after R. v. Gladue, is a landmark Supreme Court of Canada case which emphasizes the need to consider unique circumstances faced by Indigenous individuals when determining appropriate sentences. Given the overrepresentation of Black identities at all levels in the justice system, it is argued that the use of pre-sentencing reports referred to as Impact of Race and Culture Assessments (IRCAs), also needs to be comprehensively implemented for Black offenders in Canada. The Gold Rush, which brought many new immigrant communities to the American West, made a permanent impact on American culture by prompting the development of many Western towns. However, the Chinese immigrant mining population in the Boise, Idaho area has had little museum representation despite the more than 300,000 Chinese people who emigrated to the US between the 1840s and 1880. The Health Sciences and Technology Academy of Alabama (HSTA-AL) is an academic program focused on health sciences enrichment offered through the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama to address the state’s nursing and biomedical professionals shortage (i.e., a 10:1,000 nursing to population ratio). This paper examines outcomes addressing social, academic, and life success from the participants’ perspective. The one-sample-pretest-posttest designed study evaluated whether there was a difference between baseline and year 1 levels of community engagement and academic intentions for the 23 students for which paired data were obtained. This lack of regulation has occurred since the country's independence in 1945. This study aims to determine the benefits and urgency of improving airspace resilience in Indonesia by using an intelligence analysis approach. The research method is qualitative and descriptive analytical. Intelligence analysis is a powerful tool to anticipate and mitigate threats. Social media has transformed the political landscape, becoming crucial in general election preparations. It provides direct access to voters, a platform for political candidates to interact with audiences, and enables active participation in the political process. However, it also poses risks, such as the spread of false information, social division, and polarization. Algorithms on social media play a central role in shaping public perceptions of elections. A conflict of interest in the context of decision making is the potential for interference with a person's ability to make correct decisions on behalf of others. The study illustrates that a conflict of interest can threaten the independence of the Indonesian State Intelligence Agency (BIN) in carrying out its duties of early detection and early warning of national security threats. Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator-Nebraska rose by 0.58% in January 2024. The increase in the leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic growth six months into the future, suggests that the Nebraska economy will grow through mid-2024. Two components of the leading indicator improved during January. To begin with, respondents to the January Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase sales and employment over the next six months. Further, the Nebraska labor market improved. Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell during January, suggesting that employers see sufficient demand to support their current workforce.

I seek out and spend time in relatively wild outdoor locations and create art based on my observations. The resulting work explores time and place, while the creation of the work increases my engagement with the environment. This process serves as a reminder that time is relative and life itself is continuous.

Garissa county, Kenya is a geographically large county with a mobile pastoralist population that has developed a method for emergency medical services (EMS) coordination using the WhatsApp communication platform. This work was based on a site visit, to better understand and describe the current operations, strengths, and weaknesses of the EMS communication system in Garissa. The use of WhatsApp in Garissa county seems to work well in the local context and has the potential to serve as a cost-effective solution for other EMS systems in Kenya, Africa, and other LMICs.

Topics will include how the author has leveraged their OER work to amplify the documents and activities required in their own tenure and promotion process and how they have approached this subject in faculty development programming. Practical models will be offered for faculty, librarians, and OER coordinators to adapt to their own contexts.

Collectible Pricing And Collector Utility: The Role Of Production Commitments, Corey J.M. Williams, Kole Reddig, Adam Nowak

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper investigates the effect of production commitments on consumers of collectable goods. Using data on prices for Magic: The Gathering trading cards, we estimate that the reprinting of certain card varieties caused a 34% decrease in the relative price of reprinted cards. We interpret this estimate with a model of a forward-looking consumer that views collectibles as both a source of enjoyment and a store of wealth. Using a mapping between structural parameters of the model and difference-in-differences regression parameters, we compute lifetime discounted utility decreased by as much as 14% for collectors holding mainly reprinted cards.
