Large-scale adverse events such as natural disasters and pandemics interrupt business services, initiating defining moments for organizations. The trend of people exiting the workforce compels organizations to examine turnover risk and search for factors that mitigate the impact of resignations. In response to the increase in voluntary turnover and retirements during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study examines four elements that have impacted the workplace since 2020–turnover intent, job embeddedness, psychological safety, and inclusive leadership.

This review discusses climate hazards and specific risks associated with existing and new nuclear power plants under global warming level futures, with an emphasis on water-based risks for plants that rely on traditional water-cooling processes. Projected hazards, including extreme heatwaves, sea-level rise, and altered precipitation patterns pose significant challenges to the safe and efficient operation of nuclear plants. Additional risks include reduced water-cooling system efficiency, clogging due to biological contamination of water streams, water access issues in reactors during droughts, disruptions from extreme storms, and coastal sea level rise. The judiciary performs a key role in implementing the constitution and safeguarding constitutional order. Democracy cannot thrive when the judiciary is pliant. An independent judiciary is fundamental to constitutional democracy. Not only should judges be appointed in a transparent and credible manner, but their removal should insulate the judiciary from potential reprisals. This case underscores the critical need for the judiciary to assert its financial independence, ensuring that its budget and resources are not subject to undue influence or control by the executive. In this landmark ruling, the Constitutional Court missed an important opportunity to set a stronger precedent for the autonomy of the judiciary by not fully addressing the constitutional violations at hand relating to the financial independence of the judiciary. The Court’s decision, while acknowledging the issue of financial independence, failed to provide a decisive remedy to protect the judiciary from the continuing risk of executive interference. This case calls upon the judiciary to move beyond a rigid application of customary law and thoughtfully consider the gender implications in matters of child custody and marital dissolution. In this pivotal judgment, the High Court had an opportunity to address the application of Ndebele customary law, particularly the custom that grants fathers sole custody of children after lobola is paid. However, the court missed a crucial chance to engage deeply with the evolving nature of customary law, which should be interpreted in a manner that upholds gender equality and constitutional rights.

Mississippi House Bill 1125 (MS HB1125), also known as the “Regulate Experimental Adolescent Procedures (REAP) Act,” was signed into law by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves in early 2023 (REAP Act, 2023). It is one of multiple policies passed into law that limit the rights of transgender people. This thesis aims to clarify the history of the trans community, dispel myths around gender-affirming health care and the trans identity, and discuss the current state of anti-trans laws and transgender rights. In lieu of the recent Supreme Court overturn of affirmative action, Asian American students were on the forefront as the main racial group defended in this case. The model minority stereotype obscures societal perceptions of Asians and Asian Americans as collectively intelligent, hard-working, and submissive. Whereas the stereotype appears frequently in academic settings, this research aims to understand and contextualize the perceptions on affirmative action among Asian college students within the context and social dynamics of the model minority stereotype. Prior research suggests that exposure to nature increases prosociality. One of the theories as to why this happens is that nature can elicit self-diminishment which leads to the positive experience of paying less attention to oneself. To better understand the neural processes behind this, this study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) which is related to the self-concept. Participants were shown 12 images divided into four blocks separated by image types. Six were entirely natural scenes (three pleasant and three unpleasant), and six were entirely urban scenes (three pleasant and three unpleasant). …

This paper aims to discuss the theme of displacement, specifically of men in early twentieth-century England experiencing the decline of the traditional masculinity model, in the short fiction of D. H. Lawrence. Displacement, fundamentally, it is removing that which belongs in a specific place or home to an unknown, unadapted environment. In the context of literature, displacement can take more abstract shapes, such as cultural, spiritual, and mental displacements that—as most great literature does—arouses our sympathies to the larger groups and concepts for which they stand. Social media has become a greater concern to the judicial system as mistrials and overturned convictions continue to take place because of internet-related juror misconduct. This paper sought to understand the implications of social media on the criminal justice system through its use by jurors, judges, attorneys, and individuals outside of the courtroom. We examined child-, family-, and school-level risk and resilience factors associated with school dropout using longitudinal data of fifth-grade students in rural Côte d'Ivoire (N = 1195, M_age = 10.75, SD_age = 1.42). Children who dropped out of school were older, involved in more child labour, had poorer literacy skills, owned fewer books, and attended schools with poorer learning environments. Cumulative risk (CR) indices revealed that child-level CR was most strongly associated with dropout (b = 0.86, OR = 0.42) compared to family- and school-level CR; further, children with low child-level CR were more likely to …

There is substantial research about sources of burnout among academic librarians; however, very little addresses the impact of the local environment. Responding to regional and institutional shifts while still trying to uphold the values of librarianship such as providing confidential and free access to information can quickly lead to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion, classic symptoms of burnout. Ethanol is the primary active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, and functions in the body as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. The overt effects ethanol has on the body, e.g. diminished cognitive ability, loss of motor control, slurred speech, impaired balance, etc., are well documented. While the behavioral consequences of consumption are well understood, how ethanol actually functions on a mechanistic level to elicit those effects has yet to be satisfactorily elucidated.

The structural homology between ethanol and the C3 and C4 carbons of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature CNS, has led us to hypothesize …
