James Anderson’s seminal text, Education of Blacks in the South,1 is a canonical work that uniquely articulated the educational environment of African Americans immediately, during, and after Reconstruction in the southern United States. Anderson evaluated the intellectual challenges that Black people faced in securing their human right to quality education, as well as the educational fortifications implemented by formerly enslaved Black individuals that laid the groundwork for the U.S. public education system we see today. This article employs a conceptual framework illustrated through institutional data from Grambling State University to examine how digital badges, micro-credentials, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools can enhance achievement, engagement, confidence, and persistence for Black students at a rural HBCU. As institutions increasingly adopt alternative credentialing frameworks, limited research explores how these innovations function within rural contexts or how they address longstanding disparities experienced by Black learners. Grounded in culturally responsive and equity-oriented frameworks, this study proposes a model for understanding how micro-credentials and AI-enabled learning environments can operate as mechanisms of empowerment, skill validation, and institutional transformation. By engaging in close reading and exploring the cultural purchase of literature in the undergraduate classroom, the authors consider the ethical implications in working with the novella Passing (1929) by Nella Larsen, the novel God Help the Child (2015) by Toni Morrison, and the poetry collection Urban Tumbleweed: Notes from a Tanka Diary (2013) by Harryette Mullen for twenty-first-century readers. Black students across the U.S. South are learning within school systems shaped by restrictive state laws and policies, diminished federal civil rights enforcement, and ongoing political hostility toward schools that support deep learning and sustain their identities. Historically, segregation and systemic inequities restricted African Americans’ access to higher education, prompting the establishment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Currently, the dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, along with employer concerns about graduates’ workforce readiness, underscores the need for strategies to enhance graduate competitiveness. Micro-credentials have emerged as a promising approach amid the increasing popularity of non-degree credentials since the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 100 HBCUs, only 19 offer non-degree credentials, predominantly in the South. Despite various scholars critically engaging with the Harry Potter book and movie series, the analysis of the learning and educational environments within the series remains woefully limited. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix provides a look into the fictional world of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the specific experiences of the students and teachers during a hostile takeover of the campus. Revisionist Policies And Practices: How Black Faculty Members Combat Pedagogy And Research Challenges At A Pwi, Larry J. Walker, Amanda Wilkerson, Lisa Jones

This autoethnographic study critically examines faculty well-being and leadership within a predominantly White institution (PWI) amidst intensifying curricular restrictions and perceived challenges to academic freedom. Guided by fugitive pedagogy, it investigates how faculty mobilize historically situated covert-overt strategies to preserve rigorous, culturally and civically relevant learning while mitigating psychosocial strain. Utilizing reflective memos and artifacts (2022–2025) from course design, mentoring, and departmental leadership, analytic vignettes trace three tensions: (a) compliance versus intellectual honesty; (b) productivity metrics versus humane pacing; and (c) risk management versus scholarly courage. Demographic Trends And Far-Right Party Support In Europe: The Role Of The Cordon Sanitaire, Maxwell Curry

This study examines whether cordons sanitaires, institutional exclusionary arrangements common in Western and Central Europe on the part of mainstream political actors aimed to prevent far-right political parties perceived as posing a threat to liberal democratic order from entering into governing coalitions or otherwise participating in mainstream political life, condition the relationship between immigration-related demographic change and support for far-right political parties. Contemporary scholarship has extensively examined the relationship between immigration and support for far-right political parties, but comparatively little research has examined the institutional factors that potentially condition such a relationship. Estimasi Underground Economy Triwulanan Di Indonesia Pada Tahun 2010–2023, Ghina Anandhia, Hardius Usman

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Underground economics have a significant impact on economy. Underground economy leads to low potential state revenues from the tax sector. This study estimates the quarterly value of the underground economy in Indonesia from 2010 to 2023 using the Error Correction Model (ECM) method. The results show that the average value of the underground economy in Indonesia is IDR138,392.32 billion, equivalent to 5.36 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 35.72 percent of tax revenue from 2010 to 2023. GDP and tax burden variables have a positive influence on currency demand.

Personal Goal Facilitation, Burnout And Work Engagement: The Role Of Self-Discrepancy, Jacinth Jia Xin Tan, Bek Wuay Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Employees who perceive greater personal goal facilitation through work (PGFW) experience lower burnout and higher work engagement. This research examined whether self-discrepancies and emotional experiences explain these relationships across two cross-sectional studies involving a nationally representative sample of working adults (Study 1; N = 889) and a sample of public school teachers (Study 2; N = 228) in Singapore. Participants listed personal goals and rated how much their jobs facilitated these goals, alongside measures of self-discrepancy, emotions, burnout, and engagement. Across both samples, higher PGFW predicted lower burnout and greater engagement. These associations were consistently explained by lower ideal self-discrepancy …

The mutually reinforcing and coordinated development of Agricultural Digitalization (AD) and Agricultural New Quality Productive Forces (ANQPF) is an important path to achieving the modernization of agriculture and rural areas. Utilizing panel data from 31 provinces spanning 2012 to 2023, this study employs an Improved Coupling Coordination Degree Model (ICCDM), an Obstacle Degree Model (ODM), and a Random Effects Panel Tobit Model to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and the internal and external determinants of the Coupling Coordination Degree (CCD) between AD and ANQPF. Play is a critical developmental context for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), supporting cognitive, social, communication, and adaptive skill development. However, many adults, specifically registered behavior technicians (RBTs), demonstrate limited engagement in developmentally appropriate play behaviors, which can restrict the quality of play-based interventions, which are essential for effective treatment. However, little research has examined interventions designed to improve adult play behaviors. Effective climate policy must recognise how men and women differently contribute to, and benefit from, resilience efforts, as this strengthens gender equity and the sustainability of adaptation measures. This study examines the extent to which Zambia’s climate change policy framework integrates gender considerations and translates them into actionable commitments. Using the Vulnerability-to-Resilience framework, it conducts qualitative content analysis of 14 national policies, plans, and strategies spanning climate change, gender, energy, agriculture, forestry, water, and disaster management. A structured coding framework assesses gender inclusion, implementation and enforcement mechanisms, recognition of gendered climate impacts, and identified challenges and opportunities. Financing climate and biodiversity conservation amid persistent poverty has intensified debate over the ethics and effectiveness of market-based approaches relative to foreign aid. This article examines whether the form of finance shapes financial sustainability and ecological justice in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley. Guided by political ecology, it compares the commercially oriented Luangwa Community Forests Project in the South Luangwa landscape with the donor-dependent North Luangwa Conservation Programme. The analysis draws on 57 semi-structured interviews, 15 focus group discussions, participant observation and documentary review, triangulated with existing household surveys. The expansion of private higher education in Zambia has increased opportunities for rural students to access university education. However, little research has examined how these students experience and navigate the transition into urban-based Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs). Access to justice remains a challenge in Zambia with generally low awareness on the law, the available legal remedies or protections, and where to seek assistance when confronted with a legal issue. The geographic spread of courts and other auxiliary justice infrastructure is limited with the highest Courts (the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, and Court of Appeal) sitting mainly in Lusaka, with occasional presence in other urban centres. The situation is aggravated by inadequate legal aid provision with many districts in Zambia lacking a legal aid office. Second Acts In Academic Librarianship: Trends, Impacts, And Implications, Tiffany Davis Norris, Phill Johnson

The Southeastern Librarian

This study investigates the increasingly common phenomenon of academic librarianship as a second career. Survey data from more than 500 academic librarians found that nearly 70 percent of respondents did not begin their professional lives in the library field. These findings challenge the long-held perception of librarianship as an early or primary career choice and highlight significant trends with implications for library education, recruitment, leadership development, and burnout prevention. The study explores patterns in first careers and examines demographic trends, age distributions, and correlations between career background and current leadership roles.
