In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. This research examines labor migration in Nepal, focusing on the Ilam district within Koshi Province, an area with high rates of outward migration. Drawing on a background in Industrial and Labor Relations, the study seeks to understand why some individuals choose to remain in communities characterized by extensive labor migration. By analyzing the impact of the "three U's"—unskilled, uneducated, and unaware—on migration decisions, the study investigates how local education systems, skill-building opportunities, and labor market alignment shape these choices. Historically, Tibetan nuns have had limited access to debate-based philosophical study or any formal monastic education, primarily being trained in ritual practices. While debate has been practiced by other sects, it is largely understood as a major component of the Gelukpa study program. This essay attempts to explore the introduction of debate at Dolma Ling, a non-sectarian nunnery, and how the practice of non-sectarianism is reflected in the curriculum, especially in a context where women have historically been excluded from the design of their own curriculum. Medical volunteering, or “voluntourism, ” via short-term health camps is an increasingly popular way for doctors and paramedical staff to see a new region while still offering services to nearby under-serviced communities. In particular, these health camps are often propagated by the global north in largely low- and middle-income countries of the global south. Skeptics in literature point out that medical volunteers often lack cultural competence or knowledge of local health options in the community. The purpose of this research is to qualify and quantify the amount of research into composite materials applicable to certain engineering industries, then examine the impact these industries have on communities of a lower socioeconomic status. Of a random sample of papers from ScienceDirect over the last 24 years, it was found that the amount of research applicable to industries cascades as follows: the most is applicable to the construction industry, followed by automotive, defense, renewable energy, and biomedical. The effects of each industry have been examined and are presented as well.

The rising incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease and its disproportionate prevalence in the female sex has led to a growth in research focused on preclinical Alzheimer’s Disease and the histopathological brain changes. However, limited research has focused on preclinical changes in Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’s Disease populations and sex differences within these unique populations. This study aimed to address gaps in the literature by examining biological markers of neuroinflammation, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in preclinical Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’s Disease mutation carriers and non-carriers, and its relationship with cognitive function and sex. The Social Security Act of 1935 and its 1939 amendments included federal programs for maternal and infant welfare, child welfare services, and Aid to Dependent Children (ADC). Inclusion of these programs is largely owing to women reformers’ long advocacy for public assistance to families in need. The Social Security Act nationalized aspects of the program championed by the Children’s Bureau, itself a product of women’s civic organization and institution building. Synthetic fertilizers have been critical in averting global food shortages; however, synthetic fertilizers and their production have led to numerous environmental harms, including greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and soil degradation.

Scientists are working on a new technology that will create a more efficient and less impactful fertilizer process, but the legal mechanisms to encourage widespread adoption and subsequent environmental benefits fall short. In the absence of regulation, market tools can encourage behavior change. Management plan revision is currently underway for national forests in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, the Pacific Northwest, and other regions of the country under the U.S. Forest Service’s 2012 Planning Rule. With respect to dry ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer forests in the Sierra Nevada and Pacific Northwest, agency scientists and others claim that these forests were historically open and parklike, with primarily large, well-distributed trees, few smaller trees, and sparse underlying vegetation, leaf litter, and woody debris. This study reports faculty experiences regarding the discovery of scholarly content, highlighting similarities and differences across a range of academic disciplines. The authors interviewed twenty-five faculty members at a public, high-research university in the Midwest to explore the intersections of discovery, browsing, and format from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Although most participants rely on similar discovery tools such as library catalogs and databases and Google Scholar, their discovery techniques varied according to the discipline and type of research being done. Browsing is not a standard method for discovery, but it is still done selectively and strategically by some scholars. Journal articles …

BACKGROUND: Female infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) face significantly higher postoperative mortality rates after adjusting for cardiac complexity. Sex differences in metabolic adaptation to cardiac stressors may be an early contributor to cardiac dysfunction. In adult diseases, hypoxic/ischemic cardiomyocytes undergo a cardioprotective metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis which appears to be regulated in a sexually dimorphic manner. We hypothesize sex differences in cardiac metabolism are present in cyanotic CHD and detectable as early as the infant period.

METHODS: RNA sequencing was performed on blood samples (cyanotic CHD cases, n = 11; controls, n = 11) and analyzed …

Rice and wheat are India's staple cereal crops and there is significant regional variation in the suitability to the cultivation of each. Both are so-called ‘plough-positive’ crops, whose cultivation is benefited by ploughing. It has previously been argued that the ancient adoption of the plough, a heavy implement better suited to handling by men, was a factor in the evolution of cultural norms prescribing a domestic role for women in society (Boserup, 1970). This study contends that rice is an anomalous plough-positive crop in that its cultivation, highly labor-intensive, has traditionally required much female labor. This, it is argued, may …

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) college students are more likely to drop out of college than their cisgender peers. While robust previous literature has focused on individually experienced stressors, this paper looks at the structural supports offered by the institution. One hundred and fifty-four TNB college students were asked about the resources available on their campuses, their sense of safety on campus, and whether they intended to drop out of college. Campus resources and supports were associated with a greater sense of safety, and in turn, less of a desire to drop out of college. Some resources such as a nondiscrimination …

Samoan fishers have created extensive knowledge systems both historically (as traditional knowledge) and contemporarily (local knowledge), and individually and collectively through close interaction with the marine environment. Such knowledge has yet to be recorded in literature, and thus cannot be brought into discussions of cultural and ecological resilience in the face of a changing environment. To remedy this, talanoas were used in this research to holistically understand how subsistence, commercial, and game fishers in Samoa perceive and interact with their communities and the environment.
