Different Power Perceptions Based On Socially Situated Needs: Findings From A Qualitative Study Among Asian Americans, Hu Young Jeong, Johanna Vollhardt, Michelle S. Twali, John Tawa

While power is often defined and operationalized as control or influence over others, alternative conceptualizations define power as the ability to meet various fundamental needs. We argue that this conceptualization may better capture how marginalized minority group members understand their group's power or powerlessness. However, there is little research examining how people themselves construe group-based power. The present study, therefore, used qualitative inquiry to examine perceived ingroup power among Asian Americans, an underrepresented racial minority group with an ambivalent power status in society. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis in Palestine, and the continued rise in hate crimes against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, clinical social work praxis centering on the intersectional identities of queer and transgender AAPI communities has never been more vital. Through the visioning of an approach that addresses these intersecting identities and our own experiences with racism, cisheterosexism, and transphobia, we propose a theoretical framework, Queer AZN and Pasifika Critical Race Theory (CRT), for clinical social work praxis. Laney Collier scanned and transcribed a 1916 diary owned by Caroline Gilson, passed down from her mother, Arlene Abel Luchsinger. The diary was kept by Caroline’s great-great grandmother, Frederika Heinen. Frederika recorded her daily activities, the weather, community events, household activities, and family member interactions. Laney and Caroline created a manuscript transcription style guide and appendices to aid in the reading of the diary. Diary research included women and diary-keeping practices, personal communication, Kansas history, and history of Clay County/Green, Kansas. This diary serves as a historical artifact that tells the story of a family and community in 1916.

The Impact Of Fintech Lending On Small Business Bankruptcies In California (2008-2023), Lam Nguyen '25, Bin Qiu

This study examines the impact of fintech lending on small business bankruptcies at the county level in California from 2008 to 2023. Using UCC filings and FJC bankruptcy records, we find that increased fintech lending is associated with decreased bankruptcy rates across counties. This suggests that fintech lenders play a crucial role in supporting small businesses by maintaining credit access, even during economic downturns, thereby helping to mitigate the impact of reduced bank lending.

Globalizing education, while continuously fueling transformative changes to the Vietnamese education system, is predominantly associated with an ‘outward’ expansion toward economically developed nations, instead of an ‘inward’ assessment of educational diversity and equality. How has Vietnam integrated the unique cultural and historical heritages of its 54 ethnic communities into the national educational goals? Across three decades, the established guiding principles, objectives, and solutions increasingly endorsed both national contribution and cultural preservation of ethnic minority students. The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a live interviewer telephone survey of active registered voters in Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish. Four hundred and ninety-one randomly selected respondents from Orleans Parish and 487 randomly selected respondents from Jefferson Parish were interviewed from September 9th through October 1st, 2024. Each survey yields a margin of error of +/- 4.4% at a 95% confidence level.

Henley’s Migrante (2020) illustrates the synchroneity of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing to the human trafficking dynamics at sea, in which the maturation and onset of its male protagonist’s psychological and physiological damages confirm his trafficked state. Enhancing Self-Compassion: An Empirical Comparison Of Expressive Writing And Meditation, Samantha De Souza

Research Honors

Self-compassion interventions show promise in reducing stress and enhancing self-compassion among college students, a population uniquely vulnerable to high stress. Two studies were conducted to explore the impact of self-compassion practices (i.e., expressive writing and meditations). Using a within group study design, Study 1 investigated whether a prewriting task designed to induce a self-compassionate mindset could enhance the effects of a self-compassion meditation. Results showed that when participants (n = 35) completed the prewriting task before the meditation, they reported significantly higher levels of state self-compassion compared to when they were in the meditation-only group, as predicted (p = .03, …

This study examines the differences in food availability between tourist and rural markets in Bali, focusing on the factors contributing to a diet shift in Bali. Using a mixed-methods approach—including interviews with local residents, observational surveys, and a literature review—this research highlights the influence of tourism, social media, and government policies on food choices and accessibility. Findings reveal a noticeable increase in processed foods in tourist areas, driven by demand for convenience and "Instagrammable" options, while rural markets maintain a higher prevalence of whole foods despite the creeping presence of packaged products. The historical contexts in question are focused on the Soeharto dictatorship from 1966-1999 and its long reign of censorship, citizen violence, and general human rights violations.
