As libraries evolve to meet changing user and organizational needs, the work of maintaining music materials may take a backseat to other priorities. The value of physical collections endures, however, and thoughtful stacks maintenance is crucial for making library materials discoverable and accessible. This article discusses policies and workflows for maintaining music collections at academic institutions, supplying readers with practical suggestions and a best practices checklist for stacks maintenance activities. By taking a thoughtful approach to maintaining collections of music formats like scores and recordings, the authors explore the ways that stacks maintenance work can enhance users’ experience.

Generalized trust has reached new lows in America, with young Americans now trusting the least. This complicates the process of interacting with new people, which formerly contributed to trust. The present study thus tested whether networked modes of social contact and social learning might add to interpersonal competence and generalized trust. Responses to a national web survey were matched to US Census percentages for sex, race, ethnicity, age, and region. The sample resembles the US population demographically and is theoretically large enough to represent it (N = 1500). Data were analyzed using SPSS and PROCESS. Diverse contact in person …

This paper reports on a qualitative study that aimed to discover faculty and graduate students’ reaction to journal cancellation projects. In most studies that examine cancellation projects the main aim is to delineate methods used in making decisions about cancellations and the process followed to achieve a successful outcome. Our study looked at these factors but also interviewed faculty to get their response to the cancellations that had occurred at their university and to discover whether there was an alignment between the different ways in which librarians and faculty evaluated journals. This policy audit explores the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security in Canada, with a focus on immigrants, refugees, and other marginalized communities, particularly in Ontario and the Waterloo Region. COVID-19 significantly exacerbated food insecurity in the country, adding to existing vulnerabilities especially in historically disadvantaged communities, who already faced barriers such as low-income employment, poor housing, and limited healthcare access. COVID-19 responses, including lockdowns and travel restrictions, disrupted food production, processing, and retail services. The supply chain disruptions, along with inflation, drove food prices to their highest levels in decades. Economic access to food became a pressing …

Background: Wildfires are occurring more often and with greater intensity, leading to longer and harsher fire seasons. As a result, children are more frequently exposed to wildfire smoke, which increases their risk of mental and physical health effects. Purpose: The purpose of our scoping review is to explore the current literature on what is known about the direct and indirect impacts of wildfires on the mental and physical health of school-age children in North America (5 to 18-year-olds). Sleep Quality, Sleep Quantity, And Sleep Timing: Contrasts In Austrian And U.S. College Students, June J. Pilcher, Elizabeth G. Rummel, Claus Lamm

Objective: The current study compared self-reported sleep in undergraduate students in Austria and the United States.

Methods: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index responses from 292 Austrian university students (237 females) and 313 U.S. university students (189 females) were analyzed. In addition to the standard scoring procedure for the scale and the individual components of the scale, the data were also evaluated as separate sleep quality and sleep quantity factors using ANOVAs. Sleep timing (bedtime, wake-time, and midpoint) was also examined using independent t-tests.

Results: Austrian students reported better sleep quality and quantity than the U.S. students. In addition, Austrian …

Anxiety and depression are widespread mental health disorders that elicit prolonged tension, uneasiness, and low moods (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2024; American Psychological Association). These mental health conditions have been known to influence cognitive and perceptual processes (Perin et al., 2022). Multiple studies have found evidence that depression and/or anxiety create a heightened issue of misinterpreting facial and emotional cues (Kang et al., 2019; Monferrer et al., 2023). The Adobe Studio & Makerspace at Clemson serves students from over fifty-six programs in addition to our engineering program. We collected data from the logs students fill out when logging their equipment use and found that during the '23-’24 academic year, over half of the visitors were from non-engineering programs. We have learned from our discussions with students that word of mouth is a significant factor in bringing new students to our space. With consistent outreach to faculty and staff, we hope to get more non-engineering classes for Adobe Studio & Makerspace tours.

For at least a decade, we’ve noted an apparent lack of critical behaviors in regard to information. In cities and towns across the United States, Asian Americans experienced the early 2020s health crisis as a dual pandemic of COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism. In Lowell, a large proportion of Cambodian American residents live in multi-generational households and are employed in working-class occupations with a high risk of exposure to the coronavirus. For this and other reasons, the pandemic had especially serious health and financial consequences for many members of the Cambodian American community. These pandemic challenges in Lowell mounted when a nationwide surge of anti-Asian racism swept through the city and surrounding areas.

This chapter argues that the terms “Latinx” and “latinidad” are messy signifiers that allow us to contend with Latinx’s complicated racial history. While the term Latinx continues to be controversial, and scholars such as Tatiana Flores have examined the case for cancelling latinidad, “Racing Latinidad” points to how latinidad can signify particular political commitments and affinities. Through readings of Manuel Muñoz’s What You See in the Dark (2011) and Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa’s Daughters of the Stone (2009), this chapter illuminates how excavating racial histories outside the logic of the state is a way to summon a politics to imagine a people. …

This experiment demonstrated that a writing task focused on self-compassion was more effective for reducing body dissatisfaction in young women exposed to images of fashion models as opposed to writing tasks focused on body self-esteem or general self-esteem.

Emotion socialization is the process by which a child’s caregivers teach them how to understand and appropriately express emotions (Eisenberg et al., 1998). We investigated the relationship between the emotion socialization strategies experienced in childhood and mental health outcomes in young adulthood. Additionally, we examined how this relationship may differ as a function of socioeconomic status (SES).

In late 2023, the Research & Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities (RTC:Rural) and the Urban Institute partnered to better understand issues related to using and accessing rural disability data. First, we hosted two listening sessions to explore challenges and opportunities to improve the relevance, access, and accuracy of rural disability data. One listening session focused on perspectives from data users and rural community stakeholders. The other focused on perspectives from data producers including multiple federal agencies that collect and disseminate national, state, and local data. This poster aims to guide the audience through the process of creating a relevant and engaging reading challenge for third-level students in the UAE, using a real-world example created by librarians for the UAE’s Month of Reading in 2024.

For this reading competition, librarians created 25 fun reading challenges to encourage university students to read in various genres and formats, sometimes outside their comfort zone. Challenges included ‘Cook a Dish from a Recipe Book’, ‘Read a Story to a Child’, ‘Read a Book by an Emirati Author’ and ‘Listen to an audiobook using the Libby App’.

This case study describes the Belmont University Library’s partnership with a Tennessee men’s prison to provide access to higher education. The program has led to challenges relating to communication, circulation, cataloging, and collection development. These library services are necessary to provide students with access to information not only for their academic endeavors, but also for their own well-being and growth. This paper explores possible solutions to the information deficit of incarcerated students and how the library can support the needs of an underserved population.
