Vice President Kamala Harris made history in 2020 by becoming the first woman, and first Black and Asian descent to earn this coveted role for any party (Clark & Adams, 2021). During her 2020 campaign, VP Harris showed how significant identity is to her autonomy as a first-generation American who openly supports historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), as a Howard University alumna and sorority member under the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Zeleny et al., 2020). The aim of the following work was to investigate and compare curcumin and cayenne pepper in microbeads composed of sodium alginate (SA) crosslinked with montmorillonite (MMT) to act as drug carriers and their antimicrobial resistance. The microbeads were prepared through ion-exchange in multivalent solutions of CaCl₂, MgCl₂ and AlCl₃. The microbeads were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and the time required for intercalation of curcumin and cayenne pepper with MMT. Simulated intestinal fluid (pH 7.3) and gastric fluid (pH 1.2) at 37°C were used for comparison in swelling studies. …

Analysis Of The Longitudinal Effect Of Home Advantage In The Brazilian Football Championship – Série A, Werlayne Leite, Marcelo C. Zanetti

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Athletes and teams typically obtain an advantage when competing at home, a phenomenon known as home advantage (HA). This study investigates the longitudinal effect of HA in the Brazilian Football Championship (Série A) over 21 seasons, analyzing 8,405 matches from 2003 to 2023. The results showed that the average HA was 35.1 ± 7.7%, while the competitive balance (CB) was 0.838 ± 0.145. A negative, non-significant correlation (r = -0.321, p = 0.157) was found between HA and CB, with CB explaining 10.3% of HA variation in the Brazilian league. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union worked to secure liquified natural gas (LNG) deals with third countries to abolish its dependence on Russian gas. In this article, I sought to determine the environmental implications of the European Union’s new LNG deals on the air quality in Hungary and Poland, two former communist states. Despite LNG being a cleaner fossil fuel, I hypothesized that it posed a threat to Hungary’s and Poland’s air quality as both countries endured rapid industrialization under Soviet control that forwent environmental protections. This Tech Justice Lab project explored potential hiring discrimination against transgender and gender-nonconforming job applicants in the hiring process by evaluating the impact of including pronouns in résumés submitted to an applicant tracking system (ATS) platform. The research team began by collecting background information regarding existing discrimination against transgender job applicants and how ATS platforms can reflect and magnify existing biases in the hiring process. A “sock puppet” audit was then conducted by submitting fake user résumés to test the platform’s response. Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

This article explores intersections between dance, psychotherapy, phenomenology, and ontology, addressing how both verbal and non-verbal language enact ways of being in the world. The main aim is to investigate potential contributions of ontological inquiry to the practice of dance psychotherapy, to thereby strengthen the therapeutic relationship. Drawing on her practical experience and theory building in dance and dance therapy, the author presents clinical vignettes from a session as a laboratory to elaborate an ontological-phenomenological model. She concludes by clearly advocating for further exploration of these intersections and argues these fields are mutually enriching and complementary.

Tiberias: Remains Of An Early Islamic Buff Ware Pottery Workshop, Yardenna Alexandre

A small four-square excavation carried out in an area outside the Ottoman city wall of Tiberias exposed the remains of an Early Islamic pottery workshop, built over earlier Byzantine-period walls. The building remains included parts of small rooms, pits and a tiled-floor installation. The overlying accumulations and thick ashy layers contained numerous sherds of Buff Ware vessels, including glazed bowls, partially fired plain vessels, decorated sherds, clay molds, kiln bars and basalt polishing tools. All these finds indicate that the site was an Abbasid–Fatimid period Buff Ware pottery workshop.

Ḥorbat Ṭurit (South): A Late Pottery Neolithic Ephemeral Site In The ‘Akko Plain, Dmitry Yegorov, Nuha Agha

An ephemeral prehistoric site was recovered south of the multi-period settlement of Ḥorbat Ṭurit, in the section between Yasif Junction and the ‘Akko East interchange. The site revealed an archaeological layer on top of sterile terra rosa soil. According to the analysis of the lithic assemblage, the site dates to the Late Pottery Neolithic period. Despite the limited excavated area and the absence of architectural or other constructed elements, the occupation level of the site yielded a significant number of flint artifacts, some pottery and stone tool fragments, as well as a small collection of faunal remains. Kefar Veradim: An Intermediate Bronze Age Communal Burial Ground In Western Upper Galilee, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink

Between 2016 and 2018, three brief salvage excavations conducted northwest of Kefar Veradim uncovered twenty rock-cut shafts leading into multiple burial chambers dating to the Intermediate Bronze Age, as well as five associated rock-cut basins of purportedly mortuary function. These tombs are part of a burial ground extending along a rocky spur overlooking Naḥal Yeḥiʻam. At least ten of the identified underground burial chambers, which were of two different types and originally sealed with flat stone slabs, had been robbed in antiquity. The remaining tombs could not be explored due to significant interference from the ultra-Orthodox burial society Atra Kadisha.

Although these treatments have shown that they work, they can also be time-consuming, expensive, or even impossible to replicate. Risk assessments play a critical role in determining penalties and treatment, evaluating recidivism risk, and guiding interventions. As research and intervention regarding children’s problematic sexual behavior (PSB) have broadly defined PSB, including all forms of developmentally atypical sexual behavior and all potential etiological factors, limited work to date has identified subtypes or unique patterns of PSB. The aim of the current study was to examine the presence of unique patterns of PSB and etiological factors among high-risk children utilizing latent profile analysis (LPA) based on children’s self-focused PSB, interpersonal PSB (IPSB), maltreatment factors, co-occurring symptoms, adaptive functioning, and family functioning. This study investigates the demographic, religious, and psychological correlates of charitable giving during times of uncertainty. We employ structural equation modeling to understand the mechanisms that underlie faith-based philanthropy amongst Muslims. For this purpose, we analyzed Muslim American philanthropy during the month of Ramadan in 2020, a month traditionally associated with increased religiosity and philanthropy. Utilizing a sample of 1,722 Muslims in the United States and Canada, uncertainty intolerance was associated with financial anxiety (B = .26), which in turn was related to donating less money (B = -.06). Financial anxiety was also associated with subjective financial well-being (B =.-.22), …

As such, they face pressure to engage younger generations who will likely become their future financial supporters in order for their nonprofit work to be sustained. Testing Routine Activity Theory: Behavioural Pathways Linking Temperature To Crime, Christopher Thomas, Jinuk Jeong, Kevin T. Wolff

This study examines direct observations of outdoor routine activities to investigate the pathways through which temperatures shape crime. Daily administrative records of crime, weather, and outdoor activity were assembled from 2015 to 2019 in New York City. Mediation analysis (with bootstrapped standard errors) reveals that alterations in routine activities account for a statistically significant, yet modest, proportion of temperature’s relationship with homicides, shootings, assaults, larceny, and public consumption violations. The comparable mediation effects across violent and nonviolent crimes support routine activity theory as an explanatory framework for understanding temperature's impact on crime. Two Lies And A Truth: Perceived Credibility's Effect On The Truth Effect, Zefanya Boentoro, Carter King, Josiah Rosario

The truth effect posits that a person believes information the more they are exposed to it. This study researched the effects of perceived source credibility on the truth effect when perceptual fluency is consistent. One hundred ninety-four participants across four groups reviewed sets of information with differing repetitions and perceived credibilities; they then reported their willingness to believe the presented information. A statistically significant relationship was found between one of the sources for one set of information and the willingness to believe scores, while no relationship existed between the repetitions and willingness to believe scores.

Short-Term Territoriality: The Influence Of Time And Gender On Territorial Behavior, Audra Kooi, Celia Vander Woude, Elijah Vander Woude

Territoriality, the behavior of claiming and defending space or objects, has been widely studied in both animal and human contexts, but most research focuses on long-term patterns. Forty-seven undergraduate students were instructed to sit and watch videos of varying lengths. After leaving the room, participants were instructed to sit again, and their seat choices were recorded to assess territorial behavior, measured by displacement. Results showed a strong preference for returning to the same seat, which suggests territorial behavior is not exclusively established in the long term but can emerge within a few minutes.
