Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not. The 1997-98 school year saw an increase in volunteering for GTU members. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. Our members, along with the Anthropology Club, continued to keep our ISU Nature Trail clean with regularly scheduled …

The transportation of oil from Kuwait between the years 1970- 80, which was a period of relative political stability, is discussed. Based on physical, geopolitical and economic factors the country elected to use tankers rather than pipelines as did many other Gulf countries. During the period 1970- 80 the oil field to transport facilities, onshore and offshore rapidly expanded and technologically improved. Paralleling this active growth, oil tanker construction and capacity had increased. In recent years geopolitical circumstances in Kuwait and emerging Asian markets justify the option of tankers moving oil via the Gulf over pipeline transport to Mediterranean ports.

This paper explores Latino urban migration to Green Bay, Wisconsin, an intermediate size city of approximately 100,000 people. According to the census of 1990 there were approximately 1,500 Latinos living in Brown County with 1,000 ofthese living in the city of Green Bay. By 1997, estimates of the Latino population in Green Bay are from 6,000 to 7,000. Such a growth rate makes Latinos the fastest growing minority group in the city. The paper explores the nature of the migration process within the spatial and temporal context of Latino presence in the major urban centers of Wisconsin, and analyzes settlement …

While some argue in favor of the rapidly expanding service sector, pointing out that growth in services creates employment and generates income, others emphasize that many service sector jobs pay considerably less than comparable manufacturing sector jobs, which continue to be lost in many metropolitan areas. The status of geography has long been a concern to its practitioners. Efforts have been proposed to increase both the visibility and vitality of geography at all educational levels. These efforts include the activities of social organizations such as Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). This paper tests the hypothesis that geography departments with active chapters of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a geography honor society, will experience a greater increase in declared geography majors than will departments with inactive GTU chapters. However, their susceptibility to intrusions poses a significant challenge. This paper proposes a novel Intrusion Detection System (IDS) leveraging Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and an ensemble machine learning approach combining Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) models to enhance the accuracy and reliability of intrusion detection in WSNs. In December, employment increased by 256,000, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.1%. Veteran unemployment showed mixed trends, with post-9/11 veteran unemployment rising to 3.9% and significant variations across different age and demographic groups. Notably, the unemployment rate for veterans aged 25-34 and Black or African American veterans saw substantial increases.

In the ever-changing college football landscape, Division I (DI) student-athletes seek to maximize their athletic and financial potential while navigating the academic and social challenges of college life. For Black student-athletes (BSAs) at predominantly White institutions (PWIs), the campus racial climate shapes their college experience and sense of belonging. The current phenomenological study explores how DI Black football student-athletes (BFSAs) use agency from precollege experiences to navigate racial climates and find belonging at PWIs. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and sense of belonging frameworks, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 former BFSAs from DI PWIs. The study revealed three main …

Human activities have significantly impacted natural habitats and wildlife worldwide, particularly emphasizing repercussions for freshwater habitats and associated species. These negative impacts on freshwater fish are well known, but for mammal species that regularly use and dependend on freshwater systems, there is an incomplete understanding. Here, we assessed the status of freshwater and semi-aquatic mammal species inhabiting and dependent on freshwater ecosystems (hereafter referred to as freshwater mammals) and evaluated the impact of human activities on species richness both globally and by biogeographical regions. The time it takes for water to transit from the ground back to the atmosphere affects weather, climate, biogeochemistry and ecosystem function. The transit time of water through vegetation, defined as the age of water transpiring from vegetation since time of entry, is a particularly understudied aspect of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle. Here we use a synergy of satellite remote sensing measurements over a five-year period to estimate global aboveground vegetation water storage to be on average 484 km³, roughly half of which is stored in Earth’s water-limited savannah, grassland and shrubland ecosystems. Bioactive fatty acid-derived oxylipin molecules play key roles mediating inflammation and oxidative stress. Circulating levels of fatty acids and oxylipins are influenced by environmental and genetic factors; characterizing the genetic architecture of bioactive lipids could yield new insights into underlying biology. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 81 fatty acids and oxylipins in 11,584 Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) participants with genetic and lipidomic data measured at study baseline (58.6% female, mean age = 46.1 years (standard deviation 13.8)). "A chasm has formed between Holocaust scholars concerning Israel/Palestine, deepening immeasurably since 7 October 2023. Unlike previous controversies in the field, the divide is not just historical or methodological; it revolves around academics’ role in the world today, particularly the public stand they choose to take on Palestine/Israel and Zionism. Two main camps have formed. Put reductively, one camp defends Israel, while the other defends Palestinians, although differences between individual scholars within each camp make for more of a spectrum than a clear-cut divide. Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso

We examine evidence for the validity of different measures under the label emotional intelligence (EI). Some measures are valid for the assessment of EI and others are valid for the assessment of socioemotional attributes (SEA). The constructs of EI and SEA are defined and measures of each described, along with the mental response processes the measures elicit: test-takers’ abilities, self-estimated attributes, or observer reports. Both EI and SEA measures are valid but for distinctly different purposes, and the two classes of measures make different predictions.
