Farm Chemicals As Indicators Of Sediment Sources In Iowa Rivers, Edward N. Nealson, George P. Malanson

Determination of the source of sediment in rivers and streams is important in order to effectively implement a program to reduce its concentration. This project uses agricultural chemicals as indicators of current sources of sediment from farm fields in the Cedar River, Iowa watershed. We hypothesized that the relations of sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorous yields to precipitation would indicate whether sediment originated from erosion of fields or from channel bank erosion of floodplains. The changes in sediment, nitrate, and phosphorus in the channel in response to rainfall events were determined. In simple regressions, all three variables have similar slopes when …

Agricultural Drought Mitigation In Carroll County, Maryland, Teresa Kaltenbacher

Carroll County, with its longstanding tradition in agriculture, has had many past experiences with drought. This paper examines drought as it pertains to the farming community in the county. Precipitation statistics for the past 30 years are analyzed in context of the drought occurring in the summer of 1991. Crop loss and the subsequent implementation of federal emergency relief programs by the administering agencies within Carroll County are investigated and an assessment of their overall effectiveness is determined. Various coping strategies and perceptions of drought on an individual level are explored based on a field interview with a Carroll County …

The Urban Surface Of Shanghai Proper, Li Jinan, Tao Kanghua

Based on data from aerial photographs the form, material component, and structure of the urban surface of Shanghai Proper are quantitatively mapped, classified, and analyzed. Relationships between the characteristic of the land cover and urban problems are identified. Urban surfaces include natural features such as open water and culture surfaces such as tile roofs, and concrete surfaces. A quantitative analysis of the land cover reveals the historical development of Shanghai and the emergence of an urban basin with the taller buildings at the perimeter, not in the central city. BACKGROUND: The United States Veteran Health Administration (VHA) cares for a substantial group of patients who are at higher risk of substance abuse in comparison to the general population. The purpose of this study was to (1) examine opioid consumption in the veteran population both pre- and postoperatively to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and (2) understand the risk factors that are associated with sustained postoperative opioid use. METHODS: A retrospective database study was conducted using the Veterans Affairs Informatics and Computing Infrastructure database. At the request of New York State's Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), researchers from John Jay College of Criminal Justice conducted an assessment of over a decade of state-funded violence prevention initiatives implemented at the county level. Beginning in 2010 and expanding significantly after 2021, these initiatives were adopted by nearly two dozen counties by 2014. Research teams from the Research and Evaluation Center (JohnJayREC) and the Data Collaborative for Justice (DCJ) analyzed county-level trends in serious and violent crime between 2010 and 2023 to assess the potential impact of these investments on community safety outcomes. Studies have shown that Learning Communities have many benefits, including “[f]ostering workforce skills, encouraging problem-solving skills, and increasing retention and success” for both faculty and students (Dodge and Kendall, College Teaching, 2004). In this project, we created an interdisciplinary Learning Community Project that allowed a Freshman Composition (FC) course to pair with a Digital Media (DM) course (Sophomore students) for students to work on a mini magazine. Improving Rail Resources: The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor Upgrade, A. Stroup

The Detroit-Chicago Rail Corridor was awarded federal high-speed rail designation in October, 1992. This designation was the end result of a 22-year Amtrak/State of Michigan partnership created to improve the corridor's infrastructure and performance. Portions of the corridor are now able to support train speeds of up to 110 mph due to improvements to trackage and safety devices, and the elimination of some grade crossings. Facility improvements along with the infrastructure improvements have been responsible for the nearly 170 percent increase in annual corridor ridership since 1970. One was the restoration of the ISU Nature Trail which has been defunct for 10 years. The members enjoyed this outdoor project, picking up trash, old furniture and clearing the path. This project will continue to be on-going. We hope to write a selfguided tour book, create lesson plans for the local school teachers and add picnic tables and rebuild markers and signs. The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, which inhabits bank around South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands, is the most economically important crustacean in the Caribbean region. In recent years concern regarding overfishing has become prominent. In this study 46 boat loads of specimens, with catches derived from 11 fishing sites were surveyed for data sets including size, sex, and amount from each site. The catch-per-unit effort calculated for each site revealed that individual diving ability and ease of harvest were the greatest determinants for choice of fishing site. Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair

First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

The Area Deprivation Index (ADI) plays a vital role in identifying and addressing socioeconomic challenges, forming the basis for fair public health policies and resource distribution. This study explores the capabilities of both linear and non-linear statistical models, with a focus on Fixed Rank Kriging (FRK), to analyze ADI using data on U.S. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). The model’s predictive capability is compared with Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS). The non-gaussian FRK provides a more comprehensive spatial analysis, albeit with higher computational requirements.
