This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Geography Awareness Week we sold Tshirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in Indiana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee.

Certain mid-latitude coastal areas are zones of extreme baroclinicity during the coldest months of the year. Because midlatitude cyclones often tend to travel along these zones of coastal baroclinicity, the exact timing of the variations in the degree of baroclinicity along these coasts is important with regard to the forecasting of cyclonic storm tracks and their associated weather. This study examines the variations in the timing and magnitude of the baroclinicity along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico of the United States. Duathlon performance in male "middle-of-the-pack" (MMP) athletes was examined for 13 races held in Oregon and British Columbia during 1990. The primary objectives was to investigate the relationship between topographic and race-day weather variability on MMP duathlon performance. Regression models were created to help explain MMP performance for each duathlon segment (first 5 km run, 30 km bicycle, second 5 km run), overall, and 5 km run disparity. A suite of topographic and raceday weather variables were considered as possible explanatory variables. First 5 km ~un performance is primarily a function of the topographic difficulty of the course. The Impact Of Mountain Goat Migration On Unconsolidated Slopes In Glacier National Park, Montana, David R. Butler

Native mountain goats must cross U.S. Highway 2 in order to gain access to a natural salt lick along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, Montana. Prior to 1981, goats approached through forest cover and then crossed over the highway. Reconstruction of the highway incorporated two goat underpasses which substantially altered the migration pattern. Large numbers of goats now utilize an open, south-facing slope, and cause extensive erosion. Repeat photography illustrates the extent of erosion over the period since 1981 , and provides estimates of the amount of sediment removed. Erosion rates are startlingly high, and are a direct …

Glacial Landforms East Of Mount Meylixueshan In Yunnan Province, China, And Its Implication To The Mountain Uplift During The Late Pleistocene And Holocene, Masamu Aniya

Glacial landforms in the valleys of the Shenchenbao Glacier and the Lailogoru Glacier located on the eastern side of Mt. Meylixueshan (6,740 m), the highest mountain in Yunnan Province, China, were investigated in the field. The Shenchenbao Glacier terminates currently at 3,570 m and in the valley below, four terminal moraines and one pair of grand lateral moraines are recognized. The lowest terminal moraine is located at 3,260 m, about 2.5 km down from the present glacier snout. The snout of the Lilogoru Glacier lies at 2,650 m, about 900 m lower than the Shenchenbao Glacier. The Alpha Chapter is surprising itself every year with more initiates (21 this year) and more active members (35 very active individuals)! We were a busy bunch this year starting with our Homecoming float and kiddy kazoo band, in conjunction with the Political Science Club, with 60 parents and children participating, and even receiving third place award of $150. National Geography Awareness week included geography quizzes across campus, selling geography T-shirts, and visits to the local Junior High schools to make kids more aware of geography. We even had a 6th grade geography poster contest with local stores donating prizes.

Reinterpretation Of Relations Between Vegetation Removal And Water Yield, David P. Post, George P. Malanson

While the relation between vegetation clearance and increasing streamflow appears to be strong for data aggregated among geographic regions, results are equivocal in local areas. Earlier data are re-analyzed to consider the role of hydroclimatology. While vegetation clearance increases absolute streamflow, the proportional change is not significant. Residuals of regressions of absolute and proportional change in streamflow on vegetation clearance are related to precipitation, with positive and negative slopes, respectively. A few outliers with high responses are important in creating a pattern, and hydroclimatology is a better predictor of change in streamflow than is vegetation clearance for aggregate data. With …

Early opportunities for faculty guided exploration and discovery provide students with firsthand field experience and is an effective means of recruiting and retaining qualified geography majors. Due to the United States' reliance upon the electoral college, its presidential elections are intrinsically geographic events. In their campaigns successful candidates must address issues of varying pertinence in different places and at different geographic scales. The three 1992 presidential debates provide an opportunity to consider the relative geographic emphases of the three presidential candidates based on their references to geographic places. This paper uses the verbatim dialogue of the 1992 presidential debates to extract place name references by each of the three candidates. Cemetery Landscape Of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, Tadashi Nakagawa

A geographical analysis of 39 cemeteries in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, reveals a cultural mosaic of the parish. While French Louisiana culture is dominant throughout the area, some elements of the Upland South culture, such as feet-to-east burial orientation, appear in eastern Ascension Parish. The distribution pattern of above ground burials indicates a cultural hierarchy in western Ascension Parish with Donaldsonville in its peak.

Although transgender people are increasingly visible in mainstream North America, trans teachers are without adequate resources or protections to support their employment in schools. Legislation in both Canada and the United States that invokes concern about parental rights and “LGBT indoctrination” in schools illustrate the dangerous political landscape facing teachers. In 2023, over 500 anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) bills were introduced in state legislatures across the United States (Choi, 2024). This study explores deviant behaviors in academic libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria, focusing on their prevalence, causes, impacts, and potential strategies for mitigation. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted for the study. Data were collected from respondents, including students and staff at Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology library, Ogbomoso. These universities formed the population of the study. This interpretative phenomenological analysis study examined how adjunct instructors teaching online clinical counseling courses experienced gatekeeping in the context of the university system. The research question was: How do online, adjunct instructors teaching master’s level clinical counseling courses experience their university interactions as a part of gatekeeping? The participants described five experiential themes. Using explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we investigated counseling student outcomes and attitudes in asynchronous versus synchronous learning modalities. We studied whether asynchronous or synchronous learning contributed to differences in student outcomes on a final project in an Advanced Human Growth and Development course. Using a Kruskal-Wallis H test, we found no significant differences on final project scores among groups categorized according to the number of asynchronous and synchronous activities completed. We also explored the attitudes of online counseling students towards synchronous and asynchronous learning. Previous scholars in counselor education and supervision have conducted content analysis studies that uncover interesting trends and patterns about topics important to the field. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) national conference session descriptions (N = 8,395) from 1988 to 2021. Values, trends, and topics relevant to multicultural training, counselor education, supervision, professional orientation and ethics, and counselor training were most prominent while career and rehabilitation related topics were featured significantly less. Latine immigrants confront various forms of violence that increases their risk for traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a need to advance the training of counselors who can work with Spanish-speaking clients exposed to trauma. The goal of this study was to articulate a literature-based conceptualization of trauma-informed bilingual counselor education. The results of a content analysis facilitated a synthesis of the relevant scholarship that highlighted four main facets: (i) integrative translanguage pedagogy, (ii) immigrant trauma exposure and reaction, (iii) culturally responsive socio-emotional interventions, and (iv) bilingual supervisory alliance. While we have a firm understanding of how CEDS develop in general (Limberg et al., 2013; Moss et al., 2014), there is little known about how they develop specifically as teachers. The goal of this research study was to gain insight into how teacher identity develops for CEDS. In this qualitative study, the experiences of four practicing Muslim counselors who specialize in the treatment of sexual trauma were examined. By collecting data with semi-structured interviews, three distinct themes emerged: a) embodied inequality, b) theodicy and ambivalence, and c) Islamic integration and the therapeutic relationship. The findings of this study highlight the inequalities many Muslim counselors embody while balancing engagement in traditional counseling work. Implications for counselor educators and supervisors that enhance multicultural competence and improve counseling outcomes are provided.

Intake counselors (ICs) are essential members of an interdisciplinary team who assess potential clients for admission to inpatient psychiatric facilities. This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) explored the experiences of professional counselors working as ICs in inpatient psychiatric settings (n = 8). Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using IPA procedures. Four themes emerged that dealt with participants’ experiences: (1) coping with the lack of specific training, (2) balancing professional identity and system requirements, (3) coping with the emotional stressors of the inpatient environment, and (4) depending on scarce connection and support for sustainability. The COVID-19 pandemic created challenging circumstances for many counselors-in-training. In this study, researchers used a qualitative phenomenological design to explore eight master’s counseling students’ experiences navigating multiple roles, including graduate student and caregiver, during the pandemic. Themes included the many ways participants’ lives changed, participants’ sense of being pulled in many directions simultaneously, and factors that added to or mitigated the strain of navigating multiple life roles during a public health crisis. As rates of substance abuse rise in the U.S., a treatment gap persists in the provision of prevention and intervention counseling services. Improving training in substance use treatment for counselors-in-preparation who provide early prevention and intervention across school and clinical settings may help fill the void in access to services. To meet this need, we developed an online multidisciplinary SBIRT curriculum for our university’s counselor education program, including mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and school counselors.
