Perceived And Recorded Temperature In Aircraft Cabins During 143 Flights, Matthew Nicholls, Peter Vink

This essay reports on the perceived and recorded temperature in aircraft cabins during 143 flights. In each flight, passengers reported their experience. They recorded temperature and humidity after boarding and one hour later. The reports show that fewer than half of the passengers perceived the temperature as “good.” Most passengers (39%) perceived it as hot, and some (17%) perceived it as cold. Comparing the temperatures with guidelines shows that 18% of the recorded temperatures in the cabin were empirically too hot and 2% empirically too cold. We characterize the extreme points of multidimensional monotone functions from [0,1]^n to [0,1], as well as the extreme points of the set of one-dimensional marginals of these functions. These characterizations lead to new results in various mechanism design and information design problems, including public good provision with interdependent values; interim efficient bilateral trade mechanisms; asymmetric reduced form auctions; and optimal private private information structure. As another application, we also present a mechanism anti-equivalence theorem for two-agent, two-alternative social choice problems: A mechanism is payoff-equivalent to a deterministic DIC mechanism if and only if they are ex-post equivalent.

There is a dearth of research in general and qualitative research specifically about the mental health experience of resource-poor Black adolescents living in Boston. This has implications for the field in terms of how adolescents experiencing mental health issues can be supported and how professionals can create more useful mental health treatment. Drawing from the theoretical lens of critical race theory and more specifically, intersectionality, this hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry examined the ways in which experiencing multiple levels of inequality, especially from racism and poverty, affected a Black adolescent’s mental health. As one of the most established theoretical approaches to public policy, the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) has moored most of its theoretical arguments around a textbook policy conflict consisting of two or more advocacy coalitions in a mature adversarial policy subsystem within an advanced polyarchy. This article steps beyond the textbook by introducing deep core coalitions marked by compounding intersectional identities operating at the macro-system. This study develops a macroeconomic model to examine the relationships between the energy sector, economic growth and the environment in India over the period 1971 to 2021. Aligning with the United Nations SDG-13 and using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equation (SURE) model, we find that the services and agriculture sectors, non-renewable energy consumption, government expenditure, money supply, carbon dioxide emissions per capita, inflation, and population are crucial factors. The services sector and government spending notably impact economic growth and environmental degradation due to increased energy demand and emissions.

How do Digital Technologies (DT) affect the quality of governance and institutions in ASEAN? We address this question through employing a panel data technique on 10 ASEAN countries over the period between 1996 and 2022. The findings reveal that DT are influential in the quality of governance and institutions in these countries. Specifically, fixed broadband subscriptions, individuals using the internet, and mobile cellular subscriptions are vital in promoting good governance and quality institutions in ASEAN. This study investigates the impact of AI readiness and digital laws on Digitally Deliverable Services (DDS) exports, utilizing a comprehensive dataset that includes developed and developing economies, as well as various global regions. The analysis reveals that AI readiness significantly enhances DDS exports across both developed and developing countries, with notable regional variations. Higher gross national income per capita and larger population sizes are consistently positive factors, while the effects of ITA membership and digital laws, such as cybercrime and consumer protection regulations, vary by region. The study examines the nexus between output, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), renewable energy, trade openness, carbon emission, and foreign direct investment in Asia Pacific countries Using the autoregressive distributed lag model and yearly data from 1990 to 2021, we find (a) a long-run relationship among the variables under consideration, (b) that GDP positively impacts output in most countries, (c) that CO2 and renewable energy display varied effects, and (d) in the short run, GDP and trade openness generally exert a positive influence, but GDP demonstrates a mix of positive and negative impacts. Employing a firm-level panel dataset from Statistik Industri for 2008-2015, this study investigates the effect of incoming Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on inefficiency traps in Indonesia. Firms often face transient and persistent inefficiencies in production and resource utilization, impeding optimal efficiency and productivity. Stochastic Frontier Analysis and Tobit estimates quantify the positive impact of FDI spillovers on inefficiency traps, with FDI spillovers reducing both inefficiencies, particularly transient inefficiencies. Foreign investment externalities diminish inefficiencies through spatial and sectoral spillovers, with spatial spillovers exerting a larger influence. Introduction: Elevated circulating IL-6 levels are associated with poorer outcomes after stroke, and increased serum IL-6 levels are linked to a higher risk of stroke. IL-6 binds to soluble IL-6 receptors (sIL-6R) and subsequently to ubiquitously expressed gp130, initiating proinflammatory trans-signaling. This study tested the hypothesis that inhibiting IL-6 trans-signaling by administering soluble (s) gp130 improves long-term functional outcomes in young mice after stroke.

In late October GTU sponsored a geography quiz in the student union to test students' knowledge of geography and draw their attention to the upcoming Geography Awareness Week. The Friday before Geography Awareness Week, we published some of the results of the quiz and promoted geography as an interesting and rewarding career. During Geography Awareness Week, we again set up a table in the union and highlighted different aspects of geography and promoted our department.

Varying rates of till deformation as a function of surface topography and direction of continental ice advance are linked to pattern and form variations in drumlins. Five transects are examined morphometrically . Transects are selected on the basis of their slope and direction of ice advance. A hypothesis based on variable rates of clast lodgement and till deformation accounts for most of drumlins' spatial characteristics. The Cayuga Trough funnelled most of the ice southward and the large amounts of till mobilized contribute to high drumlin densities. This paper reports on the procedures and problems associated with the development of a digital cartographic data base for the creation of small scale, small size locator maps. These locator maps are used as inserts to accompany thematic and planimetric maps. They are generally very simple outlines of coastlines or political boundaries, but may also contain boxed or shaded areas, graticules, and occasionally, thematic content. An outburst flood from a failed beaver dam occurred in September, 1987, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The flood event tilted, scarred, and traumatized trees along the banks of Millstone Creek. Dendrogeomorphological techniques were employed to verify that the flood event was recorded in the annual rings of these trees, and to produce an index cutoff value for ring responses. Because of its recency, a very high number of sampled tree-rings recorded the flood; however, older floods are less likely to be so strongly recorded in the sampled trees, diminishing the usefulness of the index value concept. This study assesses the ability of Eastern Michigan University students to correlate selected newspaper headlines with the actual location of the associated stories. For this purpose, a stratified random sample of 100 students was selected from students enrolled in classes offered by the Military Science Department. A 25-item test was given to 25 freshmen , sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The students' scores averaged 76.7 percent. Of the variables examined, significant differences in test results were obtained when comparing males to females, the four academic classes, and groupings based upon ACT scores.
