Covid Mortality Diminished But Low Fertility Means Deaths Still Exceeded Births In More Than Two-Thirds Of U.S. Counties, Kenneth M. Johnson

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that only 3,606,000 babies were born in the United States between July 2023 and July 2024, according to new Census Bureau estimates. This is 43,000 fewer babies than the year before, which barely exceeds the 43-year low in 2020–2021. Births are diminishing because fertil­ity rates are at record lows. In contrast, deaths and mortality rates dimin­ished modestly last year, though deaths remain nearly 10 percent above pre-pandemic levels. As a result, the balance between births and deaths remains in flux.

Mental health literacy (MHL) improves the recognition and treatment of mental disorders. The completion of a bachelor’s degree has been correlated with higher levels of MHL, and higher levels of MHL are reported to improve mental health status (MHS). While educational attainment has a significant positive relationship with MHL, the strength and significance of education in predicting MHL level remains unclear. A health literacy conceptualization and self-efficacy theory underpinned further examination of these variables in this study. The high rate of juvenile recidivism in southeastern Michigan poses a threat to the safety of the community as well as a challenge to the juvenile probation officers (JPOs) who supervise them. The literature is abundant with data on juvenile recidivism; however, little is known about JPO’s perceptions on the efficacy of strategies and practices that aid in the rehabilitation of juvenile probationers. This article works to recover the life story of Qudsiyya Khurshid, a once well-known Mandate Palestinian intellectual and educator, who wrote essays for publication and for broadcasting on the Palestine Broadcasting Service, while working as a principal at girls’ schools in al-Bireh and Jerusalem. One of a number of educated women active in the Mandate public sphere, she disappeared from public consciousness after the Nakba. But in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where she had moved with her husband, a naturalized U.S. citizen, she became a prominent figure in civic work and as a community speaker on Palestinian and Middle Eastern life …

Within the field of journalism, women journalists face obstacles impeding their career progression and autonomy. This qualitative study uses field theory, which explores how social spaces are structured and how actors access resources; a key avenue for exploring the power relationships within a field. This theory is put in conversation with interviews with women leaders in journalism from across the United States (n=13). The study examines how women in leadership navigate their career trajectories amid structural barriers, such as gender expectations for leadership, the struggle to balance work and family, and unequal access to mentorship and resources. This dissertation investigates the influence of health policies and employment disruptions on individual health, behavior, and cognitive outcomes, utilizing quasi-experimental methods to address causal inference challenges across three distinct studies.

The first chapter examines the effects of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act on workers' compensation claims, leveraging variation in insurance coverage resulting from the policy change. Employing a difference-in-differences (DID) approach and a staggered DID framework following Callaway & Sant'Anna, this study uses data from the Current Population Survey’s Annual Social and Economic Supplements (ASEC). The findings reveal that despite increasing insurance coverage, Medicaid expansion did not significantly …

I do this by conducting a case study on the influence of Marxist feminist ideologies on the Black Panther Party’s (BPP) Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren Program (FBP). During the fall the Gamma Delta Chapter held a series of seminars on topics of controversial nature, such as the causes of glaciation and the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fall picnic was a well-attended success as was the Christmas banquet. During the spring term, the chapter is running a seminar on the Great Plains and is co-sponsoring, with Biology's Tri Beta and Geology's SGE, the visit of Carnegie Museum's Leonard Krishtalka, a paleontologist. The annual spring picnic is held in early May.

The average cost of single family resale housing displays geographic variation at many scales. Regional variations in the cost of housing are used in the compilation of cost-of-living indices, (Follain and Malpezzi, 1980) and have been well documented (inter alia Butler, 1980; Ozanne and Thibodeau, 1983; Blackley et aI, 1986). Geographic patterns of housing values within a metropolitan area are not as sensitive to the conditions affecting the national market, but are the result of a series of local influences (Bednarz and Wilson, 1982). Variation In Grassland Biomass: A Spatial And Temporal Perspective, Stephen J. Walsh

During a sampling period extending from May 07 through August 13, 1985, plant biomass, soil temperature, soil moisture, and other selected biophysical variables were collected on a weekly basis at 12 sample sites distributed along a 200 km east-west trending transect in west-central Oklahoma. Correlation coefficients showed temporal and spatial relationships between dry mean biomass and the relative location of sample sites along the transect, Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate location of each sample site, sample site elevation, and sample week (-0.43, +0.43, -0.54, and +0.42, respectively). A multiple regression analysis showed that 84.5 percent of the variation in plant biomass …

United States Mid Tropospheric Flow Patterns: A Monthly Climatology Based On Transect Difference Analysis, Brent R. Skeeter

A simple technique exists for documenting the strength and orientation of mean monthly mid-tropospheric flow. The technique involves finding the differences in the 500-mb heights between stations along selected north-south and east-west transects. Each difference is a measure of the pressure gradient along the transect. Differences along northsouth transects give a measure of the strength of the west to east flow between the two sites. Differences between the east and west sites give an indication of the strength of the meridional (i.e., northerly or southerly) flow component between these particular sites. Soil movements by ground heave and subsidence have affected areas of the North American Arctic for thousands of years (1). Zoltai (2) reconstructed the history of ground heave on hummocky permafrost terrain for the period 18101972 A.D. in the Inuvik and Norman Wells (Northwest Territories) areas, using compression-wood growth patterns in annual rings of conifers affected by heaving. His data revealed above-average levels of activity for the period 1847 to 1943, and low levels of activity since the mid-1940s. He suggested that the high levels of activity were related to higher than normal fall temperatures and precipitation; i.e., activity related …

On April 03, 1981, a precipitation event in the form of a series of thunderstorm cells affected the central portion of Oklahoma. The event was recorded by the WSR-57 radar positioned at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. In addition, the rainfall from the series of thunderstorms was recorded at rainfall gauges located at the Oklahoma Cooperative Weather Stations distributed throughout the state. The ground pattern of the corresponding rainfall event also was detected by the NOAA-6 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite over-pass on April 04, 1986, one day after the precipitation event. The early growth of the intercity bus industry is difficult to document because of the limited availability of relevant state or federal statistics prior to 1925. In fact, it was only in 1922 that vehicle manufacturers began to design chassis and bodies specifically for buses. Most of the early buses, or "jitneys" (1) as they were called, were merely converted automobiles. As a result, the bus industry was developed by numerous one-vehicle taxi operators, scattered across the country, who decided to extend their intraurban services to link nearby communities (2). This article presents findings from an environmental scan of archival work at California State University (CSU), the largest public university system in the United States. Using an online survey to collect qualitative and quantitative data, the researchers were able to create a snapshot of the current state of the archives across the CSU system's campuses. This included information about staffing, compensation, collections, duties and responsibilities, and budgets, as well as challenges.
