“I Cannot Bring A Child Into This World”: Hearing And Writing I Poems With Birthstrike Testimonials, Leola Meynell

The Qualitative Report

BirthStrike for Climate was a UK-based movement whose members “striked” against having children, to demonstrate the desperate need for political action on climate change. In this article, I engage with the Listening Guide (Gilligan & Eddy, 2017) to hear, trace and construct “I poems” with BirthStrike members’ testimonial statements, which were published online between 2019-2020. My analysis focusses on how BirthStrike stories articulate the psychosocial impacts of climate change, particularly in relation to questions about having (and not having) children in times of environmental and social crises. I provide an iteration of how the Listening Guide can be applied to …

Establishing Networked Territorial Spatial Pattern To Serve New Development Pattern, Jiaming Li, Jiaoe Wang Apr 2024

Establishing Networked Territorial Spatial Pattern To Serve New Development Pattern, Jiaming Li, Jiaoe Wang

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

A networked territorial spatial pattern, centered around major strategic corridors, plays a crucial role in supporting the construction of the new dual-circulation development pattern. The “Two Horizontals and Three Verticals” major strategic corridors that have been formed can effectively promote the concentration of socio-economic factors in major urban agglomerations. However, there exists a mismatch between the north-south vertical strategic corridors and the east-west socio-economic linkages and transportation corridors. Besides, the existing strategic corridors lack sufficient horizontal support for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, and the land and sea corridors exhibit weak horizontal driving effect and insufficient connection with external corridors. “Three …

Ethical Considerations In Using Generative Ai In Writing Studies Research, Shiva Mainaly

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

If an AI system like ChatGPT generates text used in a research paper, proper attribution, and delineation of human-written vs. AI-generated text is essential. Research has suggested that many readers cannot reliably distinguish between human and AI writing. Failing to attribute AI writing could constitute plagiarism (Dobrin, 2023). Guidelines need to be established. Similarly, if ChatGPT is used to analyze sensitive interviews or user data from research study participants, appropriate consent, privacy protections, and data security controls must be implemented. Researchers should be transparent about any AI analysis or exposure of protected participant data. On the heels of this comes …

On the other hand, the implications of student use of AI for information literacy cannot be ignored. One possible strategy is for librarians to explore the use of …

The Big Bills Are Still There: What Stands Between Credentials And Calling?, Paul R. Koch Apr 2024

The Big Bills Are Still There: What Stands Between Credentials And Calling?, Paul R. Koch

Scholar Week 2016 - present

In 1996, the late Mancur Olson, of the University of Maryland, wrote an article in the Journal of Economic Perspectives entitled "Big Bills Left on the Sidewalk." The title refers to an old joke among economists about whether or not market processes of voluntary exchange exhaust all possibilities for mutually beneficial trades. Olson went on to draw a distinction between marketable human capital, where the development of skills and habits normally increases money income in a direct manner, and public good human capital, where income is affected indirectly through the effect on public policies and institutions. Consistent with the traditional …

Food Tourism And Storytelling In The Scandinavian North, Kajsa G. Åberg

GSTC Academic Symposium - In conjunction with the GSTC Global Conference Sweden April 23, 2024

The relation between place, food and tourism is gaining interest from actors in both private and public sectors in the Nordic countries. Food is discussed as potential for product development and image building, based on reasoning on how value may be added through geographical food branding. However, food and drink may also be regarded as a tangible way to communicate local ways of life and as bearers of symbolism and values. The process of commercialization is therefore closely linked to aspects of control and respect, elements found in the criteria section on socio-cultural sustainability in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council …
