Wildfire is an ecological process that is important to ecosystems around the world. Fire is naturally occurring and is also used as a forest management technique to promote biodiversity. While previous studies have analyzed how wildfires affect insects, none of the studies have been based in Portugal about native bees or insects. Additionally, previous studies have addressed the impact wildfire has on land and forests; however, the gap in knowledge is how wildfire directly influences native bee species’ populations. Amazigh culture in Morocco has frequently been conceptualized as a rural phenomenon due to the repression of  “Amazighness” in urban settings. However, Agadir, a Southern city boasting a rich Amazigh cultural life where public symbols of Indigenous identity flourish, offers a challenge to this dichotomy. This study examines the consequences of the United States’ 2025 dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USIAD) and its effects on Moroccan nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). While debates within the United States increasingly frame foreign aid as wasteful or misaligned with domestic priorities, USAID has historically served as a core instrument of U.S. geopolitical strategy and a central source of financial, technical, and institutional support for local civil society abroad. The research investigates how long-term donor-recipient relationships shape organizational vulnerability and resilience when a dominant donor abruptly withdraws. As Moroccan cities experience rising temperatures, increased drought, and rapid urban development, urban green spaces have become central to sustainability and climate adaptation agendas. However, the social, ecological, and political implications of urban greening remain unevenly examined in semi-arid contexts. This paper investigates how green spaces are envisioned, implemented, and experienced in Agadir, a coastal city shaped by colonial planning legacies, post-earthquake reconstruction, water scarcity, and event-driven redevelopment. Rising healthcare costs in Switzerland—driven in part by incentives that reward service volume over value—have sparked interest in alternative payment models such as Pay-for-Performance (P4P). Yet Switzerland remains in the early stages of experimenting with P4P, making this a timely moment to examine how the country’s health system structure shapes the design, implementation, and feasibility of such reforms. Persistent inequities in measles vaccination systems across Sub-Saharan Africa leave millions unreached by both routine services and outbreak campaigns. Microarray patches for measles-rubella vaccination (MR-MAPs) are widely promoted as a solution to logistical and workforce barriers, yet little empirical work examines how their benefits align with real operational constraints. This study analyzes the potential role of MR-MAPs in advancing immunization equity through expert interviews and targeted document analysis. Findings reveal a tension between the technological promise of MR-MAPs and the structural limitations of current health systems. End-of-life planning can be an intimidating, confusing, and emotional process, which may explain why only 37% of Americans have completed advance care directives. To address this need, we developed the Planning AHEAD (Advance directives, Handling financial changes, Estate planning, and Arriving at Decisions for the end of this life) curriculum. Planning AHEAD is a seven-session course designed to help participants make important decisions that reflect their end-of-life wishes and document this information to relieve stress for their loved ones. In the first two years of the program, Extension educators facilitated 45 Planning AHEAD series across Wisconsin, reaching over 600 participants. …

The well-being of caregivers in the U.S. is a public health crisis. Caregivers experience greater rates of depression, chronic disease, and social isolation; however, the context of rural and urban living experiences creates different caregiving realities. Using two representative datasets of caregivers in the North Central and Northeast regions of the U.S., this paper examined the experiences of rural and urban caregivers in using formal support services. Rurality was negatively related to formal support service usage. Results from a multiple regression revealed a positive association between formal service utilization and caregiver well-being. Rural-dwelling older adults have greater mental health disparities with higher rates of depression and anxiety compared to their urban counterparts; however, reaching these communities to understand and address the specific psychological needs of rural-dwelling older adults remains a barrier for gerontologists. Strategies to promote healthy behaviors among older adults are needed to mitigate vulnerabilities to negative health outcomes, especially for those with low income. A sense of connection and belonging is widely recognized to be essential for mental health. Yet, since the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness, social isolation, and mental health problems have remained elevated across America. Transitions into young adulthood and older age, while distinct, similarly challenge social connectedness, especially among women. Our multi-lesson education program connected first-generation female college students with college-educated forty-plus women to foster belonging and improve mental health. Communities are increasingly focused on leveraging the skills and resources of older adults entering retirement to benefit the community and ensure these individuals remain integrated and valued within society. Launched in 2017, the Give 5 “Civic Matchmaking” Program is an award-winning volunteer recruitment program for near-retirees and retirees that matches participants’ skills and interests with meaningful volunteer opportunities. This study examined participants’ mindsets and perceptions of loneliness before the program, as well as their motivations for volunteering and sense of belonging afterward. The United States is facing a retirement crisis, with eight in ten older adult households experiencing or at risk of financial insecurity (Tavares et al., 2024). National data shows 60% of Americans regularly contribute to retirement accounts, and just 40% have estimated their retirement savings needs (Lin et al., 2022). With approximately 5,900 Baby Boomers retiring daily (Fry, 2019), there is considerable interest in identifying effective strategies and policies to address retirement preparedness. Coarse Salary-Setting And Behavioral Teams, Chengyuan Hua

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Among National Hockey League (NHL) player contracts signed in 2011-24, over 38% are divisible by $100,000. This paper shows that the bunching of NHL contracts at round numbers is partly driven by team coarse wage-setting. I first show that teams with more coarse contracts have worse team performance. Then, my empirical results validate two model predictions derived from a wage-setting model in which optimization costs lead to the adoption of rounded wages. With a novel measure of management quality, I document a negative relationship between management quality and coarse salary-setting. In 1864, Joseph Ernst Johann Heinen, age 27, travelled from Illinois to California for a work opportunity. His route and travel experiences were recorded in a diary, which has been transcribed, with footnotes. Research and work was conducted by Gilson, along with DePauw University students. This article includes the full transcription of the 1864 diary, a biography of Ernst Heinen and notes on sources consulted.

There are over 771,000 people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States, with job loss and natural disasters threatening to increase this number. This project reviews two possible means of providing affordable housing for PEH: using existing buildings, and Additive Manufacturing or 3D printed housing. Twenty cities in fourteen American states were reviewed for current housing unit vacancy, future planned building-to-housing conversions, and requirements to provide Additive Manufactured housing. Financial stress does not just affect people’s finances; it can change the way individuals behave. This project asks whether short-term financial difficulty damages worker performance or if alleviating it improves focus and accuracy. Using data from a field experiment in rural India, this study examine how labor payment timing variability is related to workers' productivity and error rates. The study randomized payment dates across a sample of employees, so that employees paid early can be compared to employees paid on standard or later dates.
