Lesson Plan - Why Should We Care About Climate Change?, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan - Why Should We Care About Climate Change?, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
This lesson explores the connection between global warming, climate change and weather, with a special examination of the influence of climate change on the changing energetics of storms. The big idea is that global climate change is having a significant impact on a planetary scale and the most visible impact of that is on ocean temperatures. The lesson begins with brainstorming possible effects of global warming and allows students to analyze real weather data. There is special attention paid to how these climate and weather changes may affect students’ own neighborhoods.

Parchman Farm Penitentiary Exists As Modern Day Slavery, Savannah Plaisted
Parchman Farm Penitentiary Exists As Modern Day Slavery, Savannah Plaisted
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
This research explores the connections between convict leasing in the state of Mississippi and the current state of prison labor at Parchman Farm Penitentiary (Mississippi State Penitentiary). The use of unpaid labor, the grossly disproportionate representation of Black men, the inhumane and grotesque conditions of the prison, the abnormally high death rate, and the continued execution of a disproportionate number of Black men of today’s Parchman Farm and the version of the prison at its initial founding in 1901 will be analyzed. All of these factors combined provide the foundation for the argument that slavery never ended in the state …

Lesson Plan - Where Is The Carbon?, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
Students will review the carbon cycle focusing on its qualities as a system. The lesson begins with a class discussion in order to illicit students’ prior ideas about the carbon cycle in terms of where it comes from and where it goes in the earth’s system. Then the teacher presents a PowerPoint presentation that discusses the inputs and outputs of carbon into the atmosphere and stresses the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the cycling of carbon among the various reservoirs on Earth. Students will then simulate the movement of carbon throughout the carbon cycle by playing a game. …

Lesson Plan - How Do Humans Impact The Production Of Greenhouse Gases?, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan - How Do Humans Impact The Production Of Greenhouse Gases?, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
The purpose of this lesson is for students to consider where they currently obtain their energy from and their subsequent impact on the carbon cycle. The goal is to help students understand that humans extract energy from a variety of sources including carbon based resources (e.g. wood, coal and petroleum). Many of the activities and decisions that humans make everyday impact the amount of greenhouses gases (particularly carbon dioxide) that they produce. The lesson begins by having students compare the energy usage and subsequent carbon dioxide production from an incandescent light bulb and a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb. Then …

Lesson Plan - Food Choices And Climate Change, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
Students will review concepts of the energy pyramid focusing on the loss of usable energy as it moves through food chains from producers to consumers. These ideas will then be used to explain pricing variations relative to vegetables and meats. Because more land is required to support a pound of animal vs. a pound of plants and there are limits to land that can be used for agriculture, the importance of food choice will be explored. As a concluding activity, students will calculate the distance that food ingredients for a standard lunch. In this way, students will also account for …

Lesson Plan - Powering Our City: Exploring Renewable Energy Sources, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
The goal of this lesson is for students to explore their greenhouse gas emissions and potential alternative energy sources. Using an online simulation, students explore the economic and environmental impacts of these different sources and recognize that no single alternative energy source will currently provide enough power for a city. However, by combining power from a number of sources, they can minimize the impact on the environment. Students will also discuss the strengths and limitations of this simulation. Finally students will discuss what alternative energy sources might be most viable in their own area.

Lesson Plan - Climate Change And The Ecosystem Services Model, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
Students will learn about the process and importance of carbon sequestration by trees. In this process, excess carbon is removed from the carbon cycle by trees. Next, students engage in a series of review activities in which they recall the major concepts that were covered throughout the climate change module and connect them in groups to the lenses/aspects/parts of the Ecosystems Services Model as described in Lesson 6 of Module 1. Students will also participate in a round robin to discuss and explain the reasoning behind why they categorized these concepts the way they did to other groups.

Lesson Plan - Performing Personal Energy Audits And Creating A School Wide Action Plan, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
In this lesson, students will use their knowledge about major and alternative sources of energy to create a public service announcement (PSA) that makes a convincing argument for increasing their community’s use of alternative energy sources. In constructing the argument, students must refer to specific scientifically-based evidence and facts that support their claims about alternative sources. The main point of this lesson is to highlight how the understanding science and envisioning possibilities steps of the action plan process can be utilized to take action. After completing their PSA, students will present their work to the class

Healthcare For All Colors: Anti-Racism In Medical Professions, Elise Wang
Healthcare For All Colors: Anti-Racism In Medical Professions, Elise Wang
BU Well
Racism in the United States' healthcare system has a longstanding history and exists at both the macro and microlevel. Medical professionals have a responsibility to be anti-racist in their practices. Healthcare providers and organizations can create a more equitable and beneficial medical experience for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) patients through anti racism praxis, increasing the health literacy of patients, and shifting power to patients to equalize the provider-patient dynamic. While these initiatives cannot bring the systemic change needed to fully eradicate racism from medicine, it will join providers and patients together in the fight against interpersonal, and …
