Theses
This project is over industry professionals within a relative field of Digital Content Strategy, and their professional experiences as it relates to the global pandemic that hit the United States in 2020. This virus (COVID-19) has boosted us into a predominantly digital world, with little analysis on how society is to handle or adapt. The final deliverable is short documentary offering insight on industry professionals within the field of study. The “New Normal” takes a unique approach on analyzing the state of the field as it relates to the pandemic, focusing on the personal experiences these industry professionals went through …

The following study aimed to investigate the correlation between varying levels of Spanish learners who had taken different levels of Spanish courses, and fluent speakers and their approval ratings of gender inclusive suffixes in Spanish. The study used a survey in order to gather information and approval ratings. The results indicated that higher level Spanish learners on average had lower approval ratings of the three gender inclusive suffixes included in the survey.
A Typology Of Morphological Argument Focus Marking, Aidan Alexander Aannestad
A Typology Of Morphological Argument Focus Marking, Aidan Alexander Aannestad
Theses and Dissertations
One of the methods that languages use to indicate which argument (if any) is in focus is morphological; however, there seems to be a major gap in the literature when it comes to understanding the variety and classification of morphological argument focus marking constructions. This thesis is an attempt to fill that gap. I present here both an overview of the types of morphological focus marking constructions found in the world's languages, and a taxonomic classification of said constructions based on the grammaticalisation pathways that result in their genesis. Such constructions include not only the traditional `particle focus' constructions, but …
The Impact Of Religion On Gender, Sexuality, And Abortion Politics: A Comparative Study Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of Ireland., Sabrina L. Collins
The Impact Of Religion On Gender, Sexuality, And Abortion Politics: A Comparative Study Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of Ireland., Sabrina L. Collins
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Over time, organized religion has impacted many aspects of societies across the globe. In this study, I focus on the island of Ireland – a clear case study with a history of sectarian religious divides that play out in a democratic society. Through my analysis I find that religion has operated quite differently on both sides of the Irish border as it relates to public opinion on abortion, sexuality, and gender roles. Specifically, there are striking cross-national differences regarding the importance of religious group identity compared to levels of personal religiosity in shaping public opinion on the issues studied.

The Influence Of Gender On Interruptions In The U.S. Courts Of Appeals., Molly Grace Baldock
The Influence Of Gender On Interruptions In The U.S. Courts Of Appeals., Molly Grace Baldock
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Law has historically been a male-dominated profession. The number of women earning law degrees is now close to parity with men (Moyer and Haire 2015). So, does this mean that women no longer face disadvantages in the legal profession? Unfortunately, systemic disadvantage persists. For instance, previous work on the United States Supreme Court shows that female judges and attorneys are more likely to be interrupted than men—a finding consistent with research on interruption in other contexts, like legislative bodies. This frequency of interruption can have lasting consequences on the ways in which women speak and present questions, as well as …
Early Communication Abilities Of 24-Month-Old Children With Williams Syndrome As Measured By The Communication Complexity Scale., Sean B. Woods
Early Communication Abilities Of 24-Month-Old Children With Williams Syndrome As Measured By The Communication Complexity Scale., Sean B. Woods
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with intellectual disability accompanied by a distinct cognitive profile. Despite their socially outgoing nature, children with WS exhibit delayed communication development and specific deficits across various functions of communication. The purpose of this study was to describe the range of communication complexity observed in 24-month-olds with WS and determine relations between communication complexity and other areas of cognitive development. The communication complexity of 17 24-month-old children with WS was measured using the Communication Complexity Scale (CCS), which quantifies optimal and typical communication complexity, as well as optimal communication for Joint Attention (JA) …
The Relations Between Maternal Language Input And Language Development For Children With Williams Syndrome., Katarina L. Mayer
The Relations Between Maternal Language Input And Language Development For Children With Williams Syndrome., Katarina L. Mayer
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
For typically developing (TD) children, maternal language input (MLI) is an important contributor to early language development. Until now, possible relations between MLI and language development for children with Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder associated with language delay and intellectual disability, have not been addressed. The aim of the present study was two-fold: to examine concurrent relations between MLI and child language abilities at 24 months and to determine if individual differences in MLI and children’s lexical and cognitive abilities at 24 months make significant unique contributions to the variance in child language abilities at 48 months for …
Positive Rhetoric, Prejudiced Policy: The Contradiction Of Islamophobia In American Government After 9-11., Molly Bilz
Positive Rhetoric, Prejudiced Policy: The Contradiction Of Islamophobia In American Government After 9-11., Molly Bilz
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Following the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, local and national leaders responded to the security crisis by uniting the country under the American ideals of freedom and democracy while condemning the Islamic terrorist group responsible. With beliefs rooted in historical American and European prejudice, Western scholarship promoted a “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West wherein the cultures’ supposed irreconcilable differences would inevitably lead to warfare. Simultaneously, many Americans grew suspicious of Muslims after the attacks, including government officials. As hate crimes against Muslim and Middle Eastern Americans soared in the U.S., government leaders used positive rhetoric …

The Relationship Between Mothers’ Negative Emotional Symptoms And Mother-Infant Interactions During The Covid-19 Pandemic., Kolbie A Vincent
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between mothers' negative emotional symptoms (depression, anxiety, and stress) and mother-infant interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected in the early months of the pandemic, when daycares were closed, through an online survey of parents and infants. Participants included 54 mothers of infants 3-34 months of age living in Kentucky. Well-being was measured with the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale – 21 (DASS 21). Questions related to parent-infant interactions included time spent interacting with the infants by reading, singing, playing freely with no set goal, engaging in a meaningful …
Effects Of Land Use And Transportation Infrastructure On Distance To Work In Individual Car Riders, Raha Pouladi
Effects Of Land Use And Transportation Infrastructure On Distance To Work In Individual Car Riders, Raha Pouladi
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
Studying travel behavior has become a means of addressing car dependency, greenhouse gas emission, and environmental protection. Many studies have examined the effects of socioeconomic and built environmental factors on Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) but there is a limited literature examining the role of these factors on home-to-work distance. If one of the concepts of developing new freeways and toll roads is providing faster and more reliable commutes, then it is assumed that new high-speed road infrastructure will lead to a higher commuting distance. This study used the 2017 National Household Travel Survey, U.S. Census, GIS, and Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics …
Understanding The Role Of Hospice Care: Reflections From A Service-Learning Project, Avery Mccutcheon
Understanding The Role Of Hospice Care: Reflections From A Service-Learning Project, Avery Mccutcheon
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
There is little known about the part end-of-life care plays in patient care. This paper examines the role of end-of-life care in the care of a dying patient and consists of findings from a service-learning project with Circle of Life hospice. To be able to effectively care for those in the end stages of life, healthcare professionals must turn away from the curative aspects of medicine, to treating symptoms and improving quality of whatever life remains for the patient. In order to normalize EOL Care and consequently make it more accessible, we must educate our healthcare practitioners regarding the benefits …
Exploring The Relationship Between Pain And Prospective Memory, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier
Exploring The Relationship Between Pain And Prospective Memory, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
The relationship between pain and memory has been explored through multiple perspectives and approaches. One area that has been less defined is the impact of pain on prospective memory. While studies have found a negative relationship between pain and prospective memory, little is known about the potential mediators or moderators of this relationship. The purpose of the current study was to verify previous findings and to evaluate attention and emotional regulation as mediating variables. Data were collected from a university sample and a sample recruited based on recurrent pain and/or chronic pain. Measures included self-report and online cognitive tests. The …
Role Of Experiential Learning In Financial Literacy Among Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal
Role Of Experiential Learning In Financial Literacy Among Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder with deficits in social and communication skills with repetitive or restricted behaviors. High functioning ASD individuals report poor financial literacy as a hindrance to independent living (Cheak-Zamora et al., 2017). Study 1 (N = 379) measured a construct of Autism Spectrum Quotient (ASQ), autistic traits such as difficulties with attention switching, social skills, and communication in individuals with average intelligence. Results indicate that ASQ is negatively correlated with executive functioning and poor executive functioning predicted poor money management in individuals with more autistic traits. Low levels of financial literacy result in suboptimal …

Conducting Research In Indigenous Communities: Recommendations For Research Partnerships, Sheena Gilbert, Emily M. Wright, Raquel Deherrera, Tara Richards
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Before conducting research in an Indigenous community, a researcher, especially a non-Indigenous researcher, must recognize and acknowledge not only the historical impact research has had on Indigenous communities but the current impacts that arise when research is conducted in Indigenous communities. Specifically, one must consider settler colonialism and its continuing impact on Indigenous communities today. Professor of Indigenous Education Linda Tuhiwai Smith (2012) states: “The word itself, ‘research’, is probably one of the dirtiest words in the Indigenous world’s vocabulary”. Smith continues by linking research and Western imperialism and colonialism together, with research being a tool for imperialism and colonialism. …

Most consumers are aware that our data is being obtained and collected through the use of our devices we keep in our homes or even on our person throughout the day. But, it is understated how much data is being collected. Conversations you have with your peers – in a close proximity of a device – are being used to tailor advertising. The advertisements you receive on your devices are uniquely catered to your individual person, due to the fact it consistently uses our data to produce efficient and personal ads. On the flip side, our government is also tapping …
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Single Women, Catherine Martens
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Single Women, Catherine Martens
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Since its formation in the 1700’s, America has been home to varying degrees of discrepancies between social classes, which include assumptions inherently held within these differences. Considering the fact that America was largely built by the hands of human slaves ruled by those with political influence often landowners, social hierarchy has been intricately woven into the fabric of America’s story from the beginning. Despite the progress that has been made to create and advance equal economic opportunity, there is still a considerable lack of social mobility available for those in lower socioeconomic statuses. More specifically, the impact of poverty is …
The Apparel Industry And The Lasting Impact Of Fast Fashion, Katelyn Collison
The Apparel Industry And The Lasting Impact Of Fast Fashion, Katelyn Collison
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Personal style is how everyone expresses their individuality and personality; there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to buy clothes to do that. The issue arrives when big corporations take advantage of this and sell products to consumers that end up hurting rather than healing. It is often forgotten how much of an impact big business has on our everyday lives; they can affect our economy, our atmosphere, or even our daily interactions. Customers are beginning to realize that there are positive and negative consequences to their purchases. On one hand, shopping is a great way to boost the economy, …

Media’S Portrayal Of Women And Its Impact On Body Image And Self-Esteem, Hannah Bareis
Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This project addresses the portrayal of women in media and its damaging effects on body image and self-esteem. It raises two critical questions: What negative impact is media creating on women? What can be done to combat these destructive effects?
According to a study done by Common Sense Media, "American teens use an average of 9 hours of media daily, not including for school and homework" (Common Sense Media, 2015). This data, along with many others, shows the severity of media exposure to teens. This has brought a valuable discussion to the table. How has this impacted female body image, …
Implications Of Pop Cultural Diplomacy: An Analysis Of Idol-State Interactions, Elizabeth Erwin
Implications Of Pop Cultural Diplomacy: An Analysis Of Idol-State Interactions, Elizabeth Erwin
Honors College Theses
This paper uses media coverage of idol-state interactions to understand the ways in which states utilize pop culture as a component of their public diplomacy strategy. Idol-state interactions are defined as an event where a pop cultural figure accompanies or is accompanied by a state official to a formal meeting with a representative of a foreign government. Looking specifically at South Korean diplomatic events where K-Pop idols are present, I find that idol-state interactions have the potential to increase media coverage, further cultural understanding and serve as a relationship-building tool.
Spatiotemporal Distributions Of Sargassum On Grand Cayman, Graeme Timmeney
Spatiotemporal Distributions Of Sargassum On Grand Cayman, Graeme Timmeney
Masters Theses
This mixed methods research examines individual perceptions of Sargassum on Grand Cayman’s beaches in 2020 using participant mapping, and semi – structured interviews. Results from the participant mapping are compared to satellite detection of sargassum. Sargassum poses health risks to both humans and the natural environment. Decaying Sargassum produces sulfuric gas and prevents young turtle hatchlings from reaching the ocean. Since 2011, Sargassum has diffused beyond the Sargasso Sea into entirely novel locations, spanning from the west African Coast to the Gulf of Mexico. Increased biomass has proven to be overwhelming for many Caribbean Islands, including Grand Cayman where hundreds …
Cross Domain Iw Threats To Sof Maritime Missions: Implications For U.S. Sof, Gary C. Kessler, Diane M. Zorri
Cross Domain Iw Threats To Sof Maritime Missions: Implications For U.S. Sof, Gary C. Kessler, Diane M. Zorri
Publications
As cyber vulnerabilities proliferate with the expansion of connected devices, wherein security is often forsaken for ease of use, Special Operations Forces (SOF) cannot escape the obvious, massive risk that they are assuming by incorporating emerging technologies into their toolkits. This is especially true in the maritime sector where SOF operates nearshore in littoral zones. As SOF—in support to the U.S. Navy— increasingly operate in these contested maritime environments, they will gradually encounter more hostile actors looking to exploit digital vulnerabilities. As such, this monograph comes at a perfect time as the world becomes more interconnected but also more vulnerable.

The Role Of Hope, Resilience, Religious Coping And Religious Problem Solving In College Students’ Development, Vanessa M. Campo
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
As students attend their chosen college or university day to day stressors and challenges can become overwhelming. The stressors that come with new collegiate expectations and demands can increase the importance for colleges and universities to foster students’ development. Programming or courses that increase students’ hope, resilience, and religiousness could make their college experience much better and more enjoyable. This study hypothesized the following: a will be positive correlation between hope, resilience, and positive religious coping, a positive correlation between religious coping and the collaborative subscale of the religious problem-solving scale, and that religiousness will be higher at George Fox …
Awe In The Helping Professions: Approaching Well-Being For Graduate Trainees Through Transcendent Emotion, Anna Forcelle
Awe In The Helping Professions: Approaching Well-Being For Graduate Trainees Through Transcendent Emotion, Anna Forcelle
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Graduate school is a unique season of life involving high demands and high pressure, leaving adult degree-seeking students vulnerable to stress and negative health outcomes. Students seeking degrees in helping professional programs face additional risks due to the unique amounts of compassion required to engage in others-oriented work, leaving them susceptible to compassion fatigue and burnout. With a recent resurgence in the literature on the self-transcendent emotion of awe, which is associated with greater well-being, this present study sought to examine if experiences of awe can help sustain well-being and reduce the risk of compassion fatigue in helping profession graduate …

Deployment Stress And Parenting Self-Efficacy Among Spouses Of Members Of The Armed Forces, Luisa E. Miller
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Deployment in the Armed Forces has a ripple effect on the family unit. Research suggests deployment impacts the psychological well-being of military spouses and children. The spouse who stays behind plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis while adapting to the absence of the deployed servicemember. The present study aimed to understand whether there is an association between deployment stress and parental self-efficacy. The study examined these variables in 115 military spouses of active and reserve units whose servicemembers are currently on deployment or deployed within the last two years and who are parents to children between the ages of …

The Effects Of Psychoeducation On Emotion Regulation In High School Athletes, Kami Naber
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Approximately one in five adolescents between ages 12 and 18 suffer from at least one diagnosable mental health disorder. Health professionals have referred to the current rising need for mental health treatment as an epidemic. Current approaches to meeting the rising psychological needs of adolescents are proving to be insufficient. Emotion regulation has been identified as a key element in lowering levels of psychological stress, yet many adolescents have inadequate emotion regulation skills. A particularly appropriate modality to train adolescents in the skills necessary to regulate distressing emotions, may be psychoeducation, an evidence-based therapeutic intervention that provides training and information …

The Relationships Of Perceived Parental Social Support To Vigilance And Resilience Among Lgbtq And Straight Cisgender Adults, Brady Dodds
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of parental support to resilience and vigilance in LGBTQ and straight, cisgender adults as the majority of research has examined these relationships in LGBTQ and straight, cisgender children and teens. It was hypothesized that greater parental support would be correlated with higher resilience and lower vigilance. Also, it was hypothesized that the relationships would be stronger for LGBTQ participants than for straight, cisgender participants. Participants who were recruited via Prolific Academic completed an online questionnaire that included measures of maternal and paternal support, resilience, and vigilance. Results indicated that participants …
