Investigating Insensitivity To Prior Probabilities In Merger And Acquisition Decision Making, James A. Mcgaughan May 2021

Investigating Insensitivity To Prior Probabilities In Merger And Acquisition Decision Making, James A. Mcgaughan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation I look at the high failure rates of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) and why there has been no discernible change in outcomes over the last several decades. Although we have greater access to data, sophisticated business intelligence (BI) and data analytics (DA) tools, and work by industry professionals and academics to improve the process, high failure rates have persisted. I explore the possibility that the representativeness heuristic could play a role, and specifically, the possibility that prior probabilities are being ignored in M&A evaluations. I use a mixed methods approach to explore the hypothesis that decision makers …

From Concert To Confrontation : The Ideational Motives Of Russia's Wars With Georgia (2008) And Ukraine (2014), Inguna Miller May 2021

From Concert To Confrontation : The Ideational Motives Of Russia's Wars With Georgia (2008) And Ukraine (2014), Inguna Miller

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines the ideational background of Russian foreign policy, with a particular focus on ideas relevant to Russia’s conflicts with Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014. Two broad approaches to Russian foreign policy – nationalism and pragmatism – present distinct views on Russia’s international role. Nationalism incorporates strong anti-Western and neo-imperialistic ideas with emphasis on Russia’s unique international mission and advocates a confrontational stance. Pragmatism conceptualizes Russia as a great world power but proposes a concert-based foreign policy that avoids a direct military confrontation. Both schools of thought are prevalent in Russia’s foreign policy discourse, and their ideas …

Flexible Lives On Engineering's 'Bleeding Edge' : Gender, Migration And Belonging In The Semiconductor Industry, Sarah E. Appelhans May 2021

Flexible Lives On Engineering's 'Bleeding Edge' : Gender, Migration And Belonging In The Semiconductor Industry, Sarah E. Appelhans

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation explores gender, flexibilization, and belonging within professional high tech employment, particularly amongst women and migrant engineers. Prior studies of women in the “integrated circuit” focused on low-skilled factory labor (Nakamura 2014, Grossman 1980); however, women are increasingly choosing careers in the male-dominated engineering workforce, which designs and manufactures semiconductor technology. Fieldwork for this dissertation took place between May 2018 – Aug 2019 in the Northeastern US, a regional hub for semiconductor manufacturing companies. Thirty-eight life history interviews were conducted with participants from several companies in the area, along with frequent follow ups and participant observation with seventeen engineering …

A Hero At Home, But Losing The Zeros At Work? : How Length Of Maternity Leave Effects Women's Income, Dhanisha Nandigama May 2021

A Hero At Home, But Losing The Zeros At Work? : How Length Of Maternity Leave Effects Women's Income, Dhanisha Nandigama

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

An increasing number of mothers are involved in the workforce and often take maternity leave. Women taking maternity leave experience various career implications. Importantly, leave length can impact the nature of these career outcomes. In this study, I explore the relationship between length of maternity leave and one key career outcome: income. Drawing from social role theories, I investigated whether longer parental leave is related to less positive career outcomes, such as income across women over time and if there is a curvilinear relationship between length of maternity leave and women’s income, such that the relationship between length of leave …

What Drives Collective Informal Learning : The Influence Of Team Learning Orientation, Process Efficacy, And Metacognition, Gabrielle Danna May 2021

What Drives Collective Informal Learning : The Influence Of Team Learning Orientation, Process Efficacy, And Metacognition, Gabrielle Danna

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The primary level of investigation for informal learning has been the individual level despite the social nature of informal learning, and organizational learning more broadly. This study extends goal orientation and self-regulated learning theoretical frameworks at the individual level to the collective team level to understand the inputs and processes that may predict team informal learning. A model is proposed where team learning orientation positively predicts team informal learning. Process efficacy and collective metacognition are proposed to mediate the relationship between team learning orientation and team informal learning. One hundred and two students holding a club officer position in 32 …

The Efficacy Of Orientation Programming On College Student Retention At A College Of Technology, Nicholas Mark Wagner May 2021

The Efficacy Of Orientation Programming On College Student Retention At A College Of Technology, Nicholas Mark Wagner

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This is a quantitative study that examined the efficacy of an orientation program held at a college of technology on first-year student retention and the applicability of Tinto’s Theory of Student Departure (1975, 1993). Data collected through observations and student records of students who began in fall of 2018 and fall of 2019 were analyzed using statistical tests to see if students who were retained attended more sessions than those who departed, if any of the six specific session blocks showed a greater relationship between attendance and retention, and if students who attended more than half of the orientation session …

The Effects Of Sociodemographic Characteristics, Caregiving Practice Patterns, Coping Mechanisms, And Social Support On The Health Of Asian American Ethnic Groups And Asian American Caregivers, Suryadewi Edi Nugraheni

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background: Asian American family caregivers came from various ethnic groups with different sociodemographic characteristics and culturally specific values. However, cultural practices were often overlooked because researchers often combined all Asian Americans under one umbrella. Objective: The purpose of the study was two-fold. First, the study investigated the study sample of Asian Americans participating in the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2009 comprised of multiple Asian American ethnic groups. By utilizing the study sample, the research aimed to investigate 1) the associations between caregiving and self-rated health (SRH) and hypertension and 2) the associations between heterogeneity of Asian American ethnic groups …

19th Century Exam, 21st Century Policing : An Examination Of The New York State Civil Service And Police Officer Recruitment:, Amani Edwards May 2021

19th Century Exam, 21st Century Policing : An Examination Of The New York State Civil Service And Police Officer Recruitment:, Amani Edwards

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The civil service exam was created in the late 19th century to reform the hiringprocess for public officials, focusing on merit (skills and expertise) versus political patronage and other partisan factors. While much of the 20th century focused on redesigning the civil service organizations, exam redesign still remains an important next step that is infrequently considered. In the case of police departments, while other issues arise in recruitment efforts, the civil service exam has been noted by interviewees as the biggest barrier to redesign efforts in accordance with 21st Century Policing goals. Through in-depth interviews of current police chiefs and …

Monitoring White-Tailed Deer Abundance And Habitat Selection In The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, Christopher Plummer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have seen recent advancements in technology that gave rise to their increasing use in recreational and commercial application, including wildlife conservation. Adaptive management is a must for wildlife conservation, with the goal of learning from management decisions to improve future management strategies, especially in the face of growing human related stressors such as climate change and habitat loss. Monitoring is a critical step for adaptive management, as it allows the manger to learn about the ecology of the natural system and quantify the impacts of management strategies. Species and habitats are frequently monitored for wildlife conservation …

Chinese Fathers' And Mothers' Views Of Their Daughters' Marriage And Fertility, Yiwei Xiong May 2021

Chinese Fathers' And Mothers' Views Of Their Daughters' Marriage And Fertility, Yiwei Xiong

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

China is dominated by collectivist culture, which means a person is independent only when building a complete family by getting married and having a baby. However, the phenomenon of late marriage shows a disparity from traditional norms. Chinese parents often serve as defenders of traditional norms and intervene in their children's love and marriage.

Against Empathy Bias : The Moral Value Of Equitable Empathy, Zoe Fowler May 2021

Against Empathy Bias : The Moral Value Of Equitable Empathy, Zoe Fowler

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Empathy has long been considered central in living a moral life. However, mounting evidence has shown that empathy is often biased towards (i.e., felt more strongly for) close and similar others, igniting a debate over whether empathy is inherently morally flawed and should be abandoned in efforts to strive towards greater equity. This debate has focused on whether empathy limits the scope of our morality, with little consideration of whether it may be our moral beliefs limiting our empathy. Across two studies conducted on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (N= 604), we investigate moral judgments of biased and equitable feelings of empathy. …

The Political And Economic Implications Of The Covid-19 Policy Responsiveness In El Salvador, Nicaragua, And Costa Rica, Fatima Guadalupe Rodriguez Pacas May 2021

The Political And Economic Implications Of The Covid-19 Policy Responsiveness In El Salvador, Nicaragua, And Costa Rica, Fatima Guadalupe Rodriguez Pacas

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The COVID-19 crisis is challenging the state capacity of nations around the world without any close historical precedent. In Central America, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua have implemented a series of legal regulations that range from scarce to extensive. It is challenging to estimate definite political and economic effects because of the current crisis's ongoing and dynamic nature. However, this descriptive research aims to create an initial but coherent comparative research of the policy responsiveness taken in the three Central American countries. The findings illustrate the connection between ideology, institutional order, law enforcement, and fiscal and monetary measures applied …

Bystander Intervention Among College Student Drinking Gamers : Sexual Assault Attitudes, Self-Efficacy, And Intent To Intervene, Rena L. Pazienza May 2021

Bystander Intervention Among College Student Drinking Gamers : Sexual Assault Attitudes, Self-Efficacy, And Intent To Intervene, Rena L. Pazienza

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Heavy and problematic drinking and sexual assault warrant significant concern on U.S.college campuses. Emerging evidence suggests that the risk for sexual victimization is amplified in the context of high-risk drinking behavior—and despite recent attention to sexual assault (e.g., MeToo Movement), rates of perpetration remain largely unchanged. In applying the bystander intervention framework, our understanding of the relation between key factors that may facilitate or prevent behavioral action, or when and how these factors are most salient, is limited. The present study examined whether bystander attitudes and bystander self-efficacy predict bystander intent to intervene while accounting for prior intervention training exposure …

Cynics Are Right Nine Times Out Of Ten : Negative Ilts On The Evaluation Of Leader Errors, Gage Matyasovszky May 2021

Cynics Are Right Nine Times Out Of Ten : Negative Ilts On The Evaluation Of Leader Errors, Gage Matyasovszky

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of negative-typical implicit leadership theories (ILTs), a follower’s cognitive framing and expectation for leaders on average to be more tyrannical and less sensitive in their actions and traits, on a follower’s evaluation of leader error. These are based on negative experiences with actual leaders. The study also investigated the effects of cynical beliefs that people are bad and that interactions with others will end poorly, on negative-typical ILTs and on the evaluation of leader error. A sample of 221 undergraduates read a vignette filled with potential errors and were asked …

How Do People Perceive Sexual Harassment Targeting Transgender Women, Lesbians, And Straight Cisgender Women?, Jennifer Mezzapelle May 2021

How Do People Perceive Sexual Harassment Targeting Transgender Women, Lesbians, And Straight Cisgender Women?, Jennifer Mezzapelle

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Third-party observers’ opinions affect how organizations handle sexual harassment. Prior research has focused on perceptions of sexual harassment targeting straight cisgender women. We examined how targets’ sexual orientation and gender identity impact these perceptions. In three preregistered studies, straight cisgender participants imagined a coworker confided that a male colleague had sexually harassed her. The target was a transgender woman, a lesbian woman, or a woman whose sexual orientation and gender identity were unspecified. In Study 1 (N=428), participants reported believing that sexual harassment targeting lesbians and women with unspecified identities was most likely motivated by attraction and power, whereas sexual …

Depictions Of Greece's Mgration Crisis, Erin Connie Templeton May 2021

Depictions Of Greece's Mgration Crisis, Erin Connie Templeton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

ABSTRACTOver the past decade, Greece’s position as a center for migration and immigration has been prominent in the spotlight of the international news media. The mainland of Greece and its islands have played an important role in human migration throughout much of human history, with ancient Greece being one of the world’s most well-known early human civilizations. Though in humanity’s ancient past, Greece served as an economic and cultural center, there is an obvious shift in Greece’s place on the international stage. There is a modern perception of Greece as an entry point, a pass-through, and as a sort of …

Intense News : The Role Of Emotion In The Perception Of (Fake) News, Allison Marie Wilck May 2021

Intense News : The Role Of Emotion In The Perception Of (Fake) News, Allison Marie Wilck

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Today’s widespread access to the internet and social media platforms has vastly enhanced our ability to communicate stories and ideas. This includes the dissemination of both accurate and false information. Since 2016, the popularity of the term ‘fake news’ has skyrocketed, referring to the circulation of claims that were created with the intention to spread inaccurate information. Because of its inherent falseness yet widespread presence, fake news provides a rich outlet for exploring the variables that cause a claim to appear believable. Recent empirical explorations have well-established the presence of emotional information as a hindrance to overcoming susceptibility to misinformation …

Tapestry And Tomb, Choreography And Clot : Metaphors For Mobilities And Moorings In Geographical Literature, Zachary Robert Cudney May 2021

Tapestry And Tomb, Choreography And Clot : Metaphors For Mobilities And Moorings In Geographical Literature, Zachary Robert Cudney

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Metaphors, alongside maps, are important tools in geography. More than just a form of figurative language which helps represent space, metaphors play a fundamental role in shaping geographical theory and practice. They have been shown to influence conceptual systems at both an individual and a disciplinary level. Many geographical terms, like “foothill” and “congestion,” contain metaphors in disguise. However commonplace, metaphors are nonetheless steeped in the circumstances of their formation. To better examine the implications and opportunities of their usage, I focus specifically on metaphors used in geographical literature on mobilities and moorings—those points at which mobilities come to a …

Navigating Racial Discrimination As Transnational Actors : Racial Experiences Of Asian International Students In The U.S. Under The Covid-19 Pandemic, Chen Chen May 2021

Navigating Racial Discrimination As Transnational Actors : Racial Experiences Of Asian International Students In The U.S. Under The Covid-19 Pandemic, Chen Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been intensified anti-Asian sentiment andincreased incidents of anti-Asian discrimination. Whereas a large amount of research has focused on Asian American experiences, this project specifically centers on the experiences of Asian international students as transnational actors and non-citizens of the U.S. under the COVID-19 pandemic. What this project attempts to capture are a) situated in the racial landscape in America, how Asian international students experience racial discrimination differently as transnational actors, and b) how Asian international students interpret and navigate racial discrimination as transnational actors. In-depth interviews are conducted with 20 Asian international graduate students …

Arabic-Speaking Students' Responses To Children's Literature About The Middle East, Amal Aldaej May 2021

Arabic-Speaking Students' Responses To Children's Literature About The Middle East, Amal Aldaej

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation explores a group of first and second grade (rising second and third grade) Arabic-speaking students’ responses to literature about the Middle East in an elementary public school in the northeast of the United States. It examines the students’ engagement throughout multiple contexts (grade-level classroom, English as a New Language classroom, and culturally sustaining context) across 14 months. The study’s theoretical framework included transactional theories of response (Rosenblatt, 1978), culturally sustaining pedagogy (Paris, 2012), and translanguaging (García, 2009). Through the methodology of practitioner research (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009), I adopted a critical inquiry stance through being close to my …

The Terrifying Convergence: A Legacy Of The U.S Far-Right’S Leaderless Resistance In The Twentieth Century, Ryan Szpicek May 2021

The Terrifying Convergence: A Legacy Of The U.S Far-Right’S Leaderless Resistance In The Twentieth Century, Ryan Szpicek

History Honors Program

A former Klansman and Aryan Nations ambassador named Louis Beam argued that right-wing activists would need to go to war with the U.S. federal government to preserve their culture. He updated an organizational theory known as “leaderless resistance” to prepare the right-wing militants for war. His version of leaderless resistance called for a decentralized communication network that allowed right-wing activists to exchange knowledge about engaging in independent violence. Aryan Nations brought leaderless resistance theory to life through their Aryan Liberty Network, which debuted in 1984 and enabled previously isolated right-wing groups in the United States to communicate with one another. …

Using Machine Learning To Predict Super-Utilizers Of Healthcare Services, Kevin Paul Buchan Jr. May 2021

Using Machine Learning To Predict Super-Utilizers Of Healthcare Services, Kevin Paul Buchan Jr.

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, I aim to forecast high utilizers of emergency care and inpatient Medicare services (i.e., healthcare visits). Through a literature review, I demonstrate that accurate and reliable prediction of these future high utilizers will not only reduce healthcare costs but will also improve the overall quality of healthcare for patients. By identifying this population at risk before manifestation, I propose that there is still time to reverse undesirable healthcare trajectories (i.e., individuals whose clinical risk increases an excessive healthcare and treatment burden) through timely attention and proper care coordination. My dissertation culminates in the delivery of state-of-the-art predictive …

The Attitudes Of New York State Public High School Teachers Toward Online Instruction, William Hooper May 2021

The Attitudes Of New York State Public High School Teachers Toward Online Instruction, William Hooper

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This research examined faculty attitudes toward online instruction (FATOI) at public high schools across New York State. The research sought to better understand the role that perceived positive and negative aspects of online learning play in shaping FATOI and whether a teacher’s gender, years of service, age, academic background, or experience with online learning played a moderating role. The study further sought to analyze the impact of economic need, location, and instructional application on FATOI. The theoretical underpinning of the research was based on a new model-the Online Instruction Adoption Model (OIAM). OIAM is a derivation of the Unified Theory …

Disrupting The School-To-Prison Pipeline : Implementing Alternative Education Programs To Reduce Student Disciplinary Issues, Michael M. Burns May 2021

Disrupting The School-To-Prison Pipeline : Implementing Alternative Education Programs To Reduce Student Disciplinary Issues, Michael M. Burns

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Conventional punitive detention- and suspension-based correctional approaches to student disruptive behavior are widely considered ineffective and counterproductive. Instead of offering opportunities for change and growth, they punish students they deem incorrigible by excluding them from instruction. While effective alternative approaches and programs exist, their use is far less widespread than would seem indicated. The purpose of this study is to explore how schools with successful alternative educational and disciplinary programs manage to overcome resistance to change and create settings that sustain the education for these students who through repeated disruptive behavior tend to fail in conventional punitive disciplinary programs. Three …
