Association Among Health, Disability And Labor Force Status: A Panel Analysis On Turkish Females, Burcu Düzgün Öncel
Association Among Health, Disability And Labor Force Status: A Panel Analysis On Turkish Females, Burcu Düzgün Öncel
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
This paper studies the relationship among health, disability status and labor force participation of Turkish females by using Turkish panel of Survey of Income and Living Conditions (SILC) for the years 20122015. Although the aggregate behavior of labor force participation of Turkish females has been studied widely, the association between labor force status and health indicators has drew less attention. However, I believe that revealing the connection of health status and labor force behaviors in a country with a low level of female labor force participation is important for policy implications. I use self-reported health and disability status as health …

A Pseudo Panel Analysis Of The Returns To Field Of Study, Bilge Eriş-Dereli
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
This study employs pseudo-panel fixed-effects approach to estimate the returns to field of study in Turkey. Repeated cross sections of Turkish Labor Force Surveys between 2016-2019 are used. Year of birth and region are used as grouping variables. The results indicate significant earnings differences across field of study when cohort-fixed effects are controlled. Relative to the base field, Education Sciences, there are higher returns to Environmental Sciences & Mathematics & Statistics and Engineering & Manufacturing & Architecture and Health & Welfare. On the other hand, there are lower returns to Social Sciences & Journalism. The earnings differences are insignificant for …
Asymmetric Analysis Of Okun’S Law: The Case For Turkey, Pınar Deniz, F. İrem Dogan
Asymmetric Analysis Of Okun’S Law: The Case For Turkey, Pınar Deniz, F. İrem Dogan
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
This paper revisits Okun’s law under an asymmetric approach for Turkey applying structural threshold regression model that allows for endogeneity of the threshold variable that separates the dataset into low and high regime periods according to economic growth. Moreover, the theory is investigated taking subcategories of unemployment rate into account, such as age, education and gender. Empirical findings suggest that only the overall unemployment rate and female unemployment rate reflect significantly negative impacts in both periods. During deep recessions, unemployment rates are more responsive to economic growth. In order to consider nonlinearities, Kourtellos et al. (2016) structural threshold regression (STR) …

The Relationship Between Political Stability And Portfolio Investments: The Case Of Turkey 2007-2020, Sadi Uzunoğlu, Caner Özdurak, Serap Dursun
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The collapse of the gold-based monetary system in the early 1970s and the increase in oil prices due to the Arab-Israeli War designated the beginning of a new era. With the collapse of the monetary system, the rapid volatility of money values and interest rates increased the uncertainty and encouraged investors to buy commodities, especially gold, in order to protect themselves. The oil war caused commodity prices to increase more. Cost-driven inflation and recession, which means stagflation, left its mark on the era. Keynesian policies, which were seen as responsible for the case of stagflation, had been replaced by the …

Are Modeling Methods In Health Economics Changing?, Demet Topal Koç, Ercan Eren
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
Health is a complex system since the appearance of illness and sickness has high uncertainty. In this regard, health economics is a complex system that the emergence of health care demand is uncertain. Thus, evaluation of health economics using classical mathematical methods produce insufficient and incorrect outcomes. Therefore, in this work, complex system tools and methods assessing the health economics and the health care market were investigated to illustrate the superiority of the simulation methods. In recent years, researchers tend to use simulation and modelling based applications to assess the health care market instead of classical methods such as cost-effectiveness …

Publications
This exploratory study examines how a community experiencing food insecurity while navigating multiple crises can be a model to inform resources, processes, and systems supporting communities facing similar circumstances. Data for this study were collected from residents of a community in Oconee County, a rural county in the northwest corner of South Carolina experiencing pervasive food insecurity. The community was severely impacted by the onset of COVID-19 and further devastated by a tornado in mid-April. The area of the county that sustained the greatest damage from the tornado was the Utica Mill Hill community, home to the county’s most vulnerable …

Workforce Analyses Using Combined Human Resources And Child Welfare Data, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Workforce Analytics Resources
When conducting workforce analyses, it can be valuable to capitalize on data from both human resources (HR) databases and child welfare (CW) information systems. Each can be useful on their own, but additional information can be learned when the two types of data are connected. There are two primary uses of combined HR and CW data:
- CW data can serve as objective measures of employee job performance, which is one of the most important workforce outcomes to measure, particularly when examining the effectiveness of various workforce decisions and practices.
- CW data can provide useful contextual information for studying workforce outcomes. …

Workforce Analytics Resources
Calculating and tracking workforce metrics is a valuable way to assess workforce needs and examine workforcerelated processes, interventions, and outcomes. This resource includes over 90 metrics related to recruitment and selection, education, work hours, work arrangements, caseload capacity, supervision, career development, performance, turnover and tenure, and costs. Note that these metrics are not universal, and many other variations exist elsewhere. These have been selected or developed based on their applicability to the child welfare workforce.

Workforce Analytics Resources
When conducting workforce analytics, it can be helpful to adopt a team approach and involve various experts and stakeholders, each of which can make a valuable contribution.
The Big Picture
- Ensure that you have the commitment and buy-in from leaders who control the agency’s budget and policies.
- Team membership may vary depending on the analytics goals and the stage of the work, but potential participants include representatives from agency leadership, Human Resources (HR), child welfare, Information Technology (IT), and training.
- It’s likely that no one person is going to possess all the skills needed; building a strengths-based, interdisciplinary team can …
Managing Climate Change And Weather Extremes For Nature-Based Tourism Organizations In The United States, Siyao Ma
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Weather and climate serve as profound motivators for tourism travels. Much of the United States (US) has experienced a warming trend as well as higher extreme weather frequency, and the trends are projected to be continued. Consequently, the changing climate is expected to have both direct and indirect impacts on tourism decision-making and travel patterns due to the complex relationship between climate, weather, and outdoor recreation. Climate resources capture the integrated effects of varied meteorological variables that interact with humans in different ways and can be categorized along a spectrum of quantifiable values. This dissertation proposed a Camping Climate Index …

Made Of Water, Covered In Mud, Nicole Norman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My fixation on water as metaphor is a product of my cosmic design; Scorpio sun, Pisces moon, Pisces rising. I am made of water, begging to be held. Anything liquid has this same desire. I use my art practice to examine the fluidity of physical and digital spaces; how they transform almost constantly. This is only possible through the use of containers that give form to abstract ideas and make them easier to drink (read: digest). Containers can vary in size and shape, but their purpose remains the same. A drinking glass, a swimming pool, a creek bed. These are …

An Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts From The Black Mountain Redoubt (48fr6463): A Late Archaic To Late Prehistoric Shoshone Campsite In Northwestern Wyoming, Mary Margaret Hagen Erlick
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Black Mountain Redoubt is a small Late Archaic through Late Prehistoric campsite in northwestern Wyoming associated with a series of communal bighorn sheep hunting traps. A diverse tools assemblage along with several house features indicates a wide range of activities specifically associated with bighorn sheep hunting. We use a 100 percent analysis of the obsidian formal tool and debitage assemblage as a test of obsidian conveyance in western Wyoming. Obsidian artifacts come from the five major regional sources but are dominated by Obsidian Cliff materials in keeping with the Yellowstone Plateau conveyance zone. In contrast, obsidian from Malad, Idaho …

The intention is to help students learn to manifest and maintain a positive body image.
Mitigating Risks For Youth In At-Risk Living Conditions Through School-Based Protective Factors, Cora Palma
Mitigating Risks For Youth In At-Risk Living Conditions Through School-Based Protective Factors, Cora Palma
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Youth who are in foster care or are homeless—those who reside in at-risk living conditions—face increased risk for difficulties in school including poor grades and mental health issues such as suicidality and depression. Previous research has shown that youth who are in foster care or who are homeless have, by definition, experienced adverse childhood experiences or trauma, increasing their risks for poor outcomes. Protective factors in schools can have a significant and meaningful impact on reducing the rates of depression, suicidal ideation, and failing grades. Schools that provide environments in which caring relationships between students and adults are established, high …

Through An Inequitable Collective Trauma Lens: Elevating Narratives On Mental Health And Covid-19, Juliana Espinosa, Sheila García Mazari, Samantha Minnis
Presentations
This panel session sought to elevate the voices of library professionals who had been impacted both personally and professionally by COVID-19. Speaking from their perspectives at different career points, the panelists shared their experiences, as well as how the pandemic has compounded for some, several pre-existing collective traumas. Panelists addressed the crisis narrative inherent in librarianship, and discussed how the profession can reframe its approach to inequitable trauma, unsustainable workloads, and other structural inequities. The handout provided lists the questions that panelists addressed, a resources list for further reading, and an accountability agreement for participants to engage with the space.

Presentations
This poster discusses approaches to ensure that adjunct placements leverage the temporary placement to the benefit of both adjunct librarians and institutions. Librarians can leverage short-term employment to develop skills and gain experience in new library environments. Libraries maintain services while seeking longterm solutions and progress on key projects leveraging skill areas supporting adjunct librarians’ professional development. Clear career goals, intentional supervision, and guidance on translating experience to future job applications can ground an adjunct appointment in mutually-beneficial principles.
Randomized Tax Deadlines Can Help Economy, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva
Randomized Tax Deadlines Can Help Economy, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Purpose: While the main purpose of reporting -- e.g., reporting for taxes -- is to gauge the economic state of a company, the fact that reporting is done at pre-determined dates distorts the reporting results. For example, to create a larger impression of their productivity, companies fire temporary workers before the reporting date and re-hire then right away. The purpose of this study is to decide how to avoid such distortion.
Design/methodology/approach: We want to make our solution applicable for all possible reasonable optimality criteria. Thus, we use a general formalism for describing and analyzing all such criteria.
Findings: We …
Psychological Distress And Susceptibility To Disease In The Infant And Early Childhood Mental Health (Iecmh) Workforce In The Time Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ashley Sexton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can have many adverse effects on physical health, including immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to disease. For the last year, the world has endured sustained stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which has had its own impact on mental health. Stress from COVID-19 will likely have an even greater impact on the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) workforce due to the stressful nature of their work. Self-care has been shown to improve overall wellbeing and act as a buffer for stress. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate if IECMH workers with clinically significant …

Getting Excited For Our Class: Instructor Immediacy, Rapport, And Effects For Students, Emily Napier
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examined the relationships between instructors and students to determine the effects of prosocial instructor behavior on the college student experience for both in-person and online learning. Study One examined instructor rapport with students and verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors in face-to-face classes. Students reported on how their instructor constructed the classroom climate and perceptions of their instructor’s behavior. Results indicated that students’ perceptions of instructor verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors were related to lower student communication apprehension with instructors; whereas perceived classroom rapport was related with higher perceptions of their instructor’s credibility and was also related with a …
“It’S Never Going To Be Perfect Even Though I Want It To Be”: Quantitatively And Qualitatively Investigating Honors And Non-Honors Students’ Experiences Of Perfectionism And Related Variables, Julie A. Hartung
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Previous research has demonstrated that students in university honors programs may be distinct from their non-honors counterparts. To further examine these differences and the overall experiences of honors students, this thesis utilized a Study 1/Study 2 mixed methodology design to examine the experiences of honors students within East Tennessee State University’s University Honors Scholars program. Study One quantitatively examined the differences between honors and non-honors students’ levels of perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and academic and social competitiveness. Findings from Study One inspired Study Two, which qualitatively examined honors students’ experiences with perfectionism, uncovering the sources and effects of their perfectionistic behaviors. …
Sovereign Authority And Rule Of Law: The Effect Of U.S. Use Of Torture On Political Legitimacy, Sydney Bradley
Sovereign Authority And Rule Of Law: The Effect Of U.S. Use Of Torture On Political Legitimacy, Sydney Bradley
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Governmental sovereignty is created and maintained by mutual respect for the rule of law by the government and citizens. To maintain legitimacy, a government must act within the bounds of the contract that created it. Otherwise, the relationship founded by said contract would be nullified, as would the duties and obligations that flow from that relationship. Torture exemplifies an ultra vires act used by the United States to show the consequences of over-extended authority on political legitimacy and the rule of law. Founded on the philosophies of Hugo Grotius, Thomas Hobbes, and Christine Korsgaard, this research investigates the nature of …
Effects Of Assessment And Assignment Regimes On Characteristics Of Participants In Housing Programs For People Emerging From Homelessness, Flora Alexandra Brewer
Effects Of Assessment And Assignment Regimes On Characteristics Of Participants In Housing Programs For People Emerging From Homelessness, Flora Alexandra Brewer
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
Homelessness response systems evolved over the last 20 years into institutional regimes that assess and assign homeless people to a limited set of housing programs based on individual characteristics and experiences of homelessness through Coordinated Entry Systems (CES). CESs have become a central feature of US homelessness systems and are now required of all communities receiving HUD funding through the Continuum of Care (CoC) program, the nation’s largest source of funding for homelessness assistance. In theory, housing program assignments are based on criteria reflecting an assessment of participants’ degree of vulnerability for incurring greater harm if left homeless and an …

The Geographical Tendencies Of Serial Killers In The United States, Charlene Niles
The Geographical Tendencies Of Serial Killers In The United States, Charlene Niles
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
Law enforcement agencies operate with the belief that serial murder occurs in geographical areas where groups engaging in high-risk lifestyles are prevalent. While such a conclusion does seem logical, it has never been challenged using empirical data. My thesis challenges this assumption through factual analysis. A literature review revealed what other researchers in the field estimate are the reasons behind a serial killer’s choice to operate in a given area. Research will be conducted by implementing data from the Radford/Florida Gulf Coast University Serial Killer Database and the United States Census Bureau to examine the geographical patterns of serial murder …
Understanding Aspiration And Education Towards Desistance From Offending: The Role Of Higher Education In Wales, Mark Jones, Debbie Jones
Understanding Aspiration And Education Towards Desistance From Offending: The Role Of Higher Education In Wales, Mark Jones, Debbie Jones
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
There has been a growing recognition of the value of education in facilitating desistance from offending. Yet, despite a determined push to “widen access” universities continue to be an unwelcoming place for those with a criminal record. To better understand the role of higher education in raising aspiration towards desistance, this paper draws on findings from a study in Swansea, Wales. Adopting a Pictorial Narrative approach the findings suggest that, whilst the participants identified potential benefits of attaining a higher education, those aspirations were outweighed by a distrust of the “institution” and a fear that the stigmatisation experienced through the …
Performance And Contributions Of The Green Industry To Utah's Economy, Lara Gale
Performance And Contributions Of The Green Industry To Utah's Economy, Lara Gale
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Landscaping and nursery enterprises, commonly known as green industry enterprises, can be found everywhere in Utah, and are necessary to create both aesthetic appeal and human well-being in the built environment. In order to understand the impact that events such as economic shocks or policy changes may have on the green industry, the baseline performance and contribution of the industry must be specified for comparison following these shocks. This study provides a summary and evaluation of the current performance of the green industry in Utah, and estimates the industry’s contributions to Utah’s economy in terms of transactions between industries, employee …

Allyship Training Programs In Higher Education: Creating A Critical Curriculum Of Change, Macy Marin Keith
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Allies Training Programs (also known as Safe Space/Zone training) are found in many institutions of higher education. Usually provided by an LGBTQA+ or Gender and Sexuality Center staff, the goal is to prepare participants for an allyship role in hopes of promoting safe spaces on campus and decrease instances of queerphobia. This thesis examined current allies training programs to determine what content is being presented and compare to the latest critiques and definitions. After analysis it is determined that current allyship trainings are inadequately preparing higher education staff and faculty for an ally role. Using the results of this study …
Examining Spatial Inequality In Covid-19 Positivity Rates Across New York City Zip Codes, Tse-Chuan Yang, Seulki Kim, Yunhan Zhao, Seung-Won Emily Choi
Examining Spatial Inequality In Covid-19 Positivity Rates Across New York City Zip Codes, Tse-Chuan Yang, Seulki Kim, Yunhan Zhao, Seung-Won Emily Choi
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
We aim to understand the spatial inequality in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positivity rates across New York City (NYC) ZIP codes. Applying Bayesian spatial negative binomial models to a ZIP-code level dataset (N = 177) as of May 31st, 2020, we find that (1) the racial/ethnic minority groups are associated with COVID-19 positivity rates; (2) the percentages of remote workers are negatively associated with positivity rates, whereas older population and household size show a positive association; and (3) while ZIP codes in the Bronx and Queens have higher COVID-19 positivity rates, the strongest spatial effects are clustered in Brooklyn and …
