The ‘She-Cession’: A Look At Women’S Labor During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Aspen Aston
The ‘She-Cession’: A Look At Women’S Labor During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Aspen Aston
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The pandemic in 2019-2021, induced by the spread of Covid-19 influenced global economic downturns and had significant effects on the United States labor force. The recession and pandemic disproportionately affected women’s labor causing higher unemployment and lower labor force participation for women relative to men in the U.S. throughout 2020. These effects were influenced by occupational choices, income decisions, parental status and social norms. This paper will show that women’s tendency to work in service-related occupations prompted massive losses in employment when social distancing recommendation and mandates were enforced by state and local governments. Furthermore, social distancing caused the closure …

How Expansive Is Essential? Restriction Of Abortion Services In The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Eva Katherine Waszak
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper will discuss U.S. state responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of restricting women’s access to reproductive health care and bodily autonomy. The majority of states delivered executive orders where governors made clear their plan to either uphold the principles related to reproductive health care and freedom or attack them. Almost half of the states discussed reproductive health services in either their stay-at-home orders or essential procedures orders. While the right to an abortion exists at the national level, states vary widely in their regulation of the procedure. For the purposes of this project, I will focus …

Motorcycle Fatality Rates Due To Head Injuries Are Lower In States With Helmet Laws, Mary E. Helander
Motorcycle Fatality Rates Due To Head Injuries Are Lower In States With Helmet Laws, Mary E. Helander
Population Health Research Brief Series
There are over 4,500 motorcycle crash fatalities per year in the U.S., on average. Roughly 37% of those deaths involve head injuries. Motorcycle helmet laws reduce fatalities, serious cognitive disabilities, and social costs. Yet many states have no helmet laws. This data slice shows that from 1999 to 2019, states with helmet laws had a 33% lower head-related fatality rate compared to states without helmet laws. Motorcycle helmet laws clearly save lives.
Student Perceptions Of Condensed Courses And Motivations For Enrolling: Are Some Students Scared To Enroll?, Akiva Gornish
Student Perceptions Of Condensed Courses And Motivations For Enrolling: Are Some Students Scared To Enroll?, Akiva Gornish
Kean Quest
Condensed courses are now being offered at many colleges and universities. Most research indicates that condensed courses result in equal or better student learning outcomes when compared with the outcomes of full term courses. However, because all the previous studies only examined students who self-selected to enroll in condensed courses there may be a serious selection bias and their results may not be generalizable to all students. This study attempted to examine whether there are differences between students who have taken condensed courses and those who have not. A survey was given to 102 students of which 45 had never …

The “America First” Trade Policy Of The Trump Administration And Its Economic And Military Repercussions, Emily Jeffers
Senior Honors Theses
This paper looks at the “America first” trade policy of the Trump administration and the perception that it was used to accomplish his goals of economic and military independence from the rest of the world’s interdependent web. It looks at the history of trade policy and tariffs in the United States; this is then linked to the evolution of President Trump’s trade policy through the implementation of tariffs, renegotiation of trade deals, and revision of military policy in order to “decouple” from the rest of the world. It examines the US-China trade war and the desire for increased global trade …

Does Student Performance In Introductory Economics And Business Courses Impact Ets Scores?, Peter J. Nigro, Laura Beaudin, David C. Ketcham, Michael A. Roberto
Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles
This study examines the impact of economics education on student performance on the Educational Testing Service Major Field Test in Business. We demonstrate that grades in introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics courses have a positive relationship with overall exam performance as well as sub-scores in most content areas of the test. Furthermore, we use a measure of “extranormal” ability in economics and demonstrate its positive relationship to test performance. “Extranormal” ability represents the portion of course grades that cannot be explained by prior academic achievement. Finally, we show that the relationship between “extranormal” ability and exam performance is much more limited …

Elephants Never Forget: Partisan Schemas And The Continued Influence Of Misinformation, Jeremy V. Hermanson
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In an age where information is plentiful and access to it is practically unlimited, the veracity of information is frequently an afterthought. Previous research has demonstrated that individuals may often be reluctant to alter their beliefs and attitudes even after false information is corrected. This phenomenon is known as the continued-influence effect or the continued influence of misinformation (CIM). Misinformation and “fake news” have grown more common, and their effectiveness may be explained by CIM. Research also shows that schemas can have significant effects on how information is processed, and preexisting beliefs, values and attitudes can affect what information is …
Anatolian Tigers: Then And Now, Alpay Filiztekin, Oya Kent
Anatolian Tigers: Then And Now, Alpay Filiztekin, Oya Kent
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
Turkish economy has experienced a policy shift from import-substitution to a widespread outward-oriented policy regime in 1980s. In this transition period, industrial sector has stood out as the leading in export-led growth policy. Trade openness coupled with export promotion strategies has reshaped business environment in Turkey and created new opportunities for local investors as well. Hence, this process had also considerable impacts in spatial distribution of industrial activities across Turkish regions. In this environment, some Turkish provinces have flourished a salient economic performance since 1980s that led them to be called by a colloquial term Anatolian Tigers, by associating their …

Police Brutality Against Those With Mental Illness: How To Protect Maine's People, Lauren Darge
Police Brutality Against Those With Mental Illness: How To Protect Maine's People, Lauren Darge
Student Scholarship
It is reported that around 61.5 million Americans will experience mental illness at some point in their lifetime, and 3-6% of law enforcement encounters involve those with mental illness. That is anywhere from 184,500-369,000 people with mental illness that may encounter law enforcement. In 2016, 25% of those killed by police were linked to mental illness, and the numbers are only rising. It is important to consider if all mental health crisis encounters with law enforcement are dangerous. A simple answer is no, not all. Though, those with mental illness are disproportionately involved in critical police encounters including use of …

International Migration From The Latin American-Caribbean Region: Taking Environmental Indicators Into Consideration, Chelsea Wepy
International Migration From The Latin American-Caribbean Region: Taking Environmental Indicators Into Consideration, Chelsea Wepy
Student Theses and Dissertations
International migration, the act of leaving one’s country to permanently settle in another country, is driven by many socio economic/political factors, such as lack of economic opportunity, access to education, governmental corruption, and violence. These factors have proven to be the reason that many citizens within the Latin American-Caribbean region either choose or are forced to relocate internationally. While these factors are important to consider independently; these issues are often exacerbated by changes in the natural environment. The objective of my paper is to highlight the importance of considering changes in the natural environment. In doing so, I hope to …
Australia And The United States: The Role Of Secondary Allies In Burden-Sharing, Rachel Mcvicker
Australia And The United States: The Role Of Secondary Allies In Burden-Sharing, Rachel Mcvicker
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Modern conflict is rarely fought bilaterally, instead many states share the burden of war. Multilateralism adds legitimacy to, and potentially reduces the cost of, the mission and so the major powers recruit its allies to fight wars with them. Conflict is costly for all states involved. As a result, the decision to join the effort is not simple. The smaller allies that major powers ask to join in must justify the cost of that conflict. Some states always fight alongside its major allies, others have more variability in its commitments. This paper aims to find the reasons why states, specifically …

Black Lives Matter. The Nba Strike And Its Effect, Chiara Armstrong, Julian Saint Clair
Honors Thesis
The summer of 2020 marked an important turning point for the contemporary civil rights movement Black Lives Matter (BLM). The rest of the world started to take notice and protests happened around the globe following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. Although there is a long history of sports activism, the National Basketball Association had previously been reluctant to take a stance on BLM as an organization. Following the murder of yet another unarmed Black man, Jacob Blake, every single NBA player refused to play in their playoff games from August 26th through the 28th. Previous research has …

The Impact Of Culture On Member State Migration Policy In The European Union, Sophia Notter, Jennifer Ramos
Honors Thesis
The European Union (EU) was formed with the belief that further integration among European states would bring sustainable peace. This began with economic integration but continued to include political and social integration as well. This ad hoc method of creating cohesion among sovereign Member States was generally accepted among Member State governments and citizens. However, in 2014, when a flood of refugees began arriving in Europe, fleeing from violence and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, the EU as an institution, and what exactly it means to be European, was challenged. Instead of pulling together and promoting the …
