Background: While great strides have been made in surgical techniques and bowel management therapies for patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) and Hirschsprung’s disease (HSCR), little is known about psychosocial and behavioral factors that impact the quality of life at each stage of development.
Objectives/Goal: We aimed to perform a qualitative literature review to highlight the psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral themes that affect the quality of life as patients born with congenital colorectal disease.
Methods/Design: A systematic literature review of all articles published between 1980-2019 was performed in the PubMed and CINAHL databases. Inclusion criteria included articles that reported on the …
Changes In Family Functioning During The First Year Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment: A Mixed-Method Pilot Study, Carolyn Bates
Changes In Family Functioning During The First Year Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment: A Mixed-Method Pilot Study, Carolyn Bates
Research Days
Background: A new diagnosis of pediatric cancer presents a sudden and tremendous stressor for families of all backgrounds and circumstances (Long & Marsland, 2011; Bemis et al., 2015). Although many families are resilient in the context of new cancer diagnosis, approximately 33% are at risk for negative outcomes due to psychosocial distress and difficulties with effective coping (Kazak et al., 2020; Pai et al., 2008), supporting the need for systematic assessment of psychosocial health as a standard of care in pediatric oncology (Kazak et al., 2015). Alongside heightened stress within the first year of diagnosis, parents may relax family rules …

Improving Pre-Departure Training For English Teacher Volunteers In Costa Rica: An Examination Of Aliarse And Recommendations, Derek Schwartz
Capstone Collection
Volunteering outside of one’s country and culture is a challenging endeavor. While abroad, international volunteers generally encounter a new language, culture, and lifestyle which can create challenges for volunteers. Pre-departure training can buffer and lend nuance to the difficulties that volunteers face. In Costa Rica, the organization Aliarse manages a volunteer project that experiences high volunteer attrition and incorporates minimal pre-departure training. This case study draws on quantitative and qualitative data collected from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews of former Aliarse volunteers over two months. Results from the data found that ninety-four percent of the interviewees said interacting either directly or …

Community History In Minnesota During A Pandemic: What Comes Next?, Adam Stephen Guy Smith, Daardi Sizemore Mixon
Library Services Publications
Three Minnesota cultural heritage organizations developed distinctly different community history projects to document the COVID-19 Pandemic. Anoka County Historical Society distributed monthly surveys asking questions relevant to the community at the time while encouraging the public to submit documentation for the archives. Hennepin County Library rapidly expanded its nascent web archiving program to capture websites of Minneapolis and suburban community organizations affected by and responding to the pandemic. Minnesota State University, Mankato developed a community history project that incorporated the international student experience to explore how our students and their families responded to the pandemic throughout the summer.

Library Presentations
The shift to remote and hybrid learning due to COVID-19 has underscored the urgency for instructors to explore alternative assessments and center student voices. This session focuses on advancing libraries’ work promoting digital literacies with pedagogical collaboration around project-based assessments. We explore the case study of CreateUK, a web hosting initiative at the University of Kentucky Libraries designed to provide accessible online space for faculty, staff, and students to develop websites and other digital publications. Using this as a blueprint, participants will consider ways of fostering similar initiatives at their institutions that create transformative learning opportunities for students.
El Dilema En Los Números: An Examination Of The Historical Exclusionary Mathematics Placement Practices That Prevent Hispanic Level 1 And 2 El Student Participation In Higher-Level Mathematics Courses., Rardy Leandro Pena
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
The current placement of Hispanic level 1 and 2 English Learner students into mathematics courses has been constructed and propagated by the assumptions that these students enter school in the United States at a lower level in mathematics. This assumption, which has neither been tested nor confirmed, perpetuates the systemic injustices in public education by erroneously creating a homogeneous placement process for Hispanic English Learner students and contributes to the economic, social, and political marginalization often experienced by Hispanic immigrants. The purpose of the current project was to examine the veracity of these assumptions by exploring the mathematics placement practices …

Education Doctorate Dissertations
This dissertation reports on qualitative research done with a phenomenological methodology on the topic of building community. This was explored through the voices of over 200 participants representing more than 30 countries. Surveys and in-depth interviews examined international experiences and cultural background of participants alongside many stakeholder voices from within higher education, including international and domestic students, faculty, and staff. Though the study and application is focused on a higher education context, the research has broader implications to society in looking at how intentional conversations across cultural symmetry impacts relationships and community building. The data touched on feelings of isolation …

Anthropology Faculty Research
Aspects of human life history and cognition, such as our long childhoods and extensive use of teaching, theoretically evolved to facilitate the acquisition of complex tasks. The present paper empirically examines the relationship between subsistence task difficulty and age of acquisition, rates of teaching, and rates of oblique transmission among Hadza and BaYaka foragers from Tanzania and the Republic of Congo. We further examine cross-cultural variation in how and from whom learning occurred. Learning patterns and community perceptions of task difficulty were assessed through interviews. We found no relationship between task difficulty, age of acquisition, and oblique transmission, and a …

The Phenomenon Of Sexual Violence During Armed Conflicts In The Twenty-First Century: Entering The Era Of Survivors As Agents Of Peace, Shayna Kushner
International Relations Honors Papers
Evidence suggests the twenty-first century has witnessed a surge in armed conflicts and ethnic wars targeting marginalized communities, subjecting innocent civilians to violence and destruction. Among the tactics aimed to disrupt family and social ties within the existing communities, some armed groups and government sponsored soldiers have subjected vulnerable individuals to wartime rape and conflict-related sexual violence including physical and mental abuse. While the international community attempts to intervene militarily and judicially to quell the sexual violence, institutions and individual actors fall short of providing justice and accountability to survivors and victims of conflict-related sexual violence. Through the case studies …

Women’S Resilience Through Bullying Vernaculars: A Visual Vernacular Discourse Analysis, Karla Ibet Ochoa
Communication ETDs
This study shows the importance of understanding the vernaculars of resilience in relationship to bullying. In this thesis, I explore the public expressions of resilience from three women of color who experienced bullying and have become anti-bullying activists. I explore how the women construct public vernaculars of resilience and perform resilience. I drew on Feminist Standpoint Theory to conduct a visual vernacular discourse analysis of public expressions. The vernaculars discovered through analyzing the public expressions were resilience, self-expression, activism, and all voices matter. These vernaculars and performances reveal women’s feminist standpoints through the work that they do and release to …

(1) Background: In resource-limited countries, patients with tuberculosis (TB)/HIV coinfection commonly face economic, sociocultural, and behavioral barriers to effective treatment. These barriers manifest from low treatment literacy, poverty, gender inequality, malnutrition, societal stigmas regarding HIV, and an absence of available care. It is critical for intervention programs to understand and assist in overcoming these barriers and any additional risks encountered by patients with TB/HIV coinfection. This study analyzes variation in TB/HIV coinfection and risks of negative outcomes among patients with TB/HIV coinfection compared to those without coinfection. (2) Methods: This quantitative study used data from 49,460 patients receiving ART from …

Inter-Relationships Among Several Person-Related Attributes In Reading And Metacomprehension: Complexity And Educational Implications, Lin-Miao L. Agler, Larisa K. Alfsen
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Reading is one of the most basic academic skills. An accurate monitor of one’s text comprehension (i.e., metacomprehension) is essential for effective reading as it guides learning and choices of appropriate strategy used to maximize overall understanding. The processes of reading comprehension and metacomprehension are affected by text-related, task-related, and reader- /person-related factors. One of the two purposes of this report is to provide a brief review of consistent research findings on the interrelationships among several person-related variables and the complexity of those associations in reading and metacomprehension. The person variables discussed include personality, motivation, goal orientations, self-regulation, reading strategy …
The Five-Factor Model Of Personality And Problematic Smartphone Use, Alexander K. Knack, Colin R. Harbke
The Five-Factor Model Of Personality And Problematic Smartphone Use, Alexander K. Knack, Colin R. Harbke
Modern Psychological Studies
Thirteen studies were reviewed to better understand how smartphone ownership and use relate to the five factors of personality (i.e., openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) overall and across three different age groups. Of the 10 studies used to compare problematic smartphone use across age groups, 2 (20%) included adolescent samples, 7 (70%) included young adult samples, and 3 (30%) included adult to older adult samples. Across all samples, problematic smartphone use correlated most strongly with neuroticism (positively) and conscientiousness (negatively). Relatively weaker and more inconsistent correlations with problematic smartphone use were found for openness, extraversion, and agreeableness. Future research should …

The Effect Of Race Of The Perpetrator And Misinformation On Eyewitness Accuracy And Confidence, Rachel A. Wilson, Tammy L. Sonnentag
Modern Psychological Studies
Eyewitnesses are an important component of criminal justice protocol; however, if inaccurate, there are grave consequences. The prevalent use of eyewitness accounts, despite the limits and fallibility of human memory demonstrate the need for research on factors affecting credible eyewitness accounts. The current study examines how the introduction of misinformation affects eyewitness accuracy and confidence when the race/ethnicity of the perpetrator is different from, compared to when the race of the perpetrator is the same as, the race/ethnicity of the eyewitness. A total of 69 White/European participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions where they read a University-Issued …

The Barmen Declaration And The American Church: A Warning And Guidance From History, Johnny Davis
The Barmen Declaration And The American Church: A Warning And Guidance From History, Johnny Davis
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
The Barmen Declaration serves as a great example that the American Church should heed.[1] The American Church faces a hostile secular culture and a government that is increasingly statist and anti-Christian. The state has become an idol in an American culture that rejects truth and righteousness. A bold stance for truth and Christ is required by scripture and is the key to transforming the culture and saving the American Republic.
The Long Road Towards Racial Reconciliation, Lia Cueto Jerez
The Long Road Towards Racial Reconciliation, Lia Cueto Jerez
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
The issue of race in the United States has been long contested among different social and political spheres. Over the course of the 20th and 21st century, Americans have been eyewitnesses to the long and evolving fight for racial justice and equality. Most recently, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 has proven to contest people’s attitudes over the issue. As political polarization grows, mistrust within communities of color deepens, further hindering participation in bipartisan work to overcome these differences.
