Trauma Effects, Empathy, And Dance/Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Jenna Soldati
Trauma Effects, Empathy, And Dance/Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Jenna Soldati
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Trauma exists at many levels, affecting people in various ways biologically and emotionally. Trauma and adverse experiences have been researched, suggesting effects on the whole individual including their psychological, physical, and social wellness (Cristobal, 2018; Greenberg, Baron-Cohen, Rosenberg, Fonagy, & Rentfrow, 2018; Levy, Goldstein, & Feldman, 2019; Olofsson, Iddli, Hoffart, Eielsen, & Vrabel, 2020). Similarly, empathy and empathic behaviors exist on a varying scale as well. Investigating the effects of trauma on empathy, themes of resilience emerge in survivors of trauma and provide insight into alternative healing modalities. Dance/movement therapy and other mindfulness-based treatments provide a method of trauma-informed care …
Connecting Mind, Body, And Earth Through Authentic Movement With Nature As Mover And Witness: A Community Engagement Project, Helen Berger
Connecting Mind, Body, And Earth Through Authentic Movement With Nature As Mover And Witness: A Community Engagement Project, Helen Berger
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Ecopsychologists emphasize that humanity cannot be healed separately from nature. Research in this budding field indicates that communing with the natural world has a mutually positive effect on both the human psyche and the environment. This thesis explores the intersection between dance/movement therapy practices, which address the mind/body connection, and the tenets of ecopsychology, which address the connection between humanity and earth, to develop an ecosomatic community workshop that integrates the mind/body/earth connection. The practice of Authentic Movement, in which a mover and witness engage in a movement dialogue, was adapted to re-animate the natural world by including more-than-human beings …
Disrupting Self-Silencing In Cisgender Women Using Drama Therapy’S Role Theory And Role Method, Jennifer Ansted
Disrupting Self-Silencing In Cisgender Women Using Drama Therapy’S Role Theory And Role Method, Jennifer Ansted
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Self-silencing is the repression of one’s own emotions, restriction of self-expression, and showing concern for others over the self as a result of societal ideals and expectations imposed on a person because of gender. This thesis approaches self-silencing from a relational cultural perspective and uses attachment theory and Jack’s (1993) Silencing the Self Theory to understand why self-silencing occurs and its impact on cisgender women. Potential therapeutic interventions for women who self-silence are proposed using drama therapy’s role theory and role method. Furthermore, updates to the current role taxonomy to be more inclusive of roles relevant to women and self-silencing …
“Inside Out”: Using Expressive Arts Therapy To Externalize Implicit Feelings In A Chinese Origin Client With Psychosomatic Issues, Yun Hong
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Due to the discouragement to express emotion excessively in Chinese culture, Chinese people may be more inclined to show unexpressed emotions through alternative ways, such as physical symptoms, which may lead to some psychosomatic issues. Expressive arts therapy has its advantage in facilitating non-verbal expressions. But can this western approach work for Chinese population that holds different views on the relationship between physical and psychological aspects? This study explored the use of expressive art therapy to help clients with psychosomatic issues from Chinese backgrounds. The method included development of a method inspired by Focusing-oriented art therapy for a client with …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The aim of this thesis is to inform and showcase the importance of Expressive Dance/Movement Therapy Supporting Mental Health and Menstruation. Through the extensive search for data the writer found a gap in current treatment options that do not utilize the benefits of Expressive Dance/Movement Therapy and or Creative Arts as a treatment option for womxn suffering from Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS), Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) and or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). By using case studies that support Expressive Dance/Movement Therapy as a theoretical framework to demonstrate the effects of mindfulness, emotional benefits of creative arts, and cultivating embodiment of sensual empowerment. …
Creating A Movement Group In The 2-Dimensional World: Using Dance/Movement Therapy Interventions To Build Connections For Children, Naomi E. Muhs
Creating A Movement Group In The 2-Dimensional World: Using Dance/Movement Therapy Interventions To Build Connections For Children, Naomi E. Muhs
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The world experienced many changes after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, including counseling sessions transitioning to being delivered through the service of distance counseling. As a growing field, dance/movement therapy must explore distance counseling services to expand and have relevancy within the demands of current society. This project addressed the gap in the research on the integrating of distance counseling services and dance/movement therapy while presenting an interactive remote method for facilitating a group therapy session with a dance/movement therapy approach. Every piece of literature that was researched helped in creating the interventions that were implemented with the clients. The following …
Moving Parts: The Integration Of Dance/Movement Therapy And Internal Family Systems, An Evolving Method, Juliana Willey
Moving Parts: The Integration Of Dance/Movement Therapy And Internal Family Systems, An Evolving Method, Juliana Willey
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This paper discusses the integration of dance/movement therapy and internal family systems. I proposed the integration of these two frameworks as a way to foster individuals’ ability to develop a more solidified sense of self, purpose, and agency in their lives by using the information from the body to identify parts that may be hindering their full wellness. I implemented a three-part structure that included an internal family systems meditation, artistic processing, and movement at a day treatment program for four weeks with a group of five Caucasian women between the ages of 53 and 67. This work has taught …
Dmt And Dissociation: Opening The Window Of Tolerance To Embodiment; Development Of A Method, Erin Wilmanns
Dmt And Dissociation: Opening The Window Of Tolerance To Embodiment; Development Of A Method, Erin Wilmanns
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Dissociative symptoms show in many different types of diagnoses, and dance/movement therapists have the skill set to introduce embodiment as a distress tolerance and regulatory skill. The current literature regarding effective dance/movement therapy as a tool for working with dissociative symptoms does not include the intersection of those that hold a queer identity. Inclusion of dissociative symptoms with trans* (any person who is not cisgender) identity allows for empowerment of recovery. The discussed development of a method is designed to contribute to the strengths and limitations dance/movement therapy holds in relation to dissociative symptoms, specifically working within the window of …

Beyond Bingo: Enhancing Quality Of Life In The Face Of Death For Hospice Patients With Dementia Through Integrated Expressive Arts Therapies, Development Of A Method, Jeanie Cooper Carson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This paper explores ways integrated expressive arts therapies (EAT) used with individuals with dementia in hospice can help facilitate living well in the face of dying. While research is limited regarding use of EAT with this population specifically, much significant research has been conducted to support the effectiveness of the employment of various creative arts modalities with individuals with dementia and also on hospice. Building on this research, the author developed and implemented an integrated EAT method with members of this population living in long-term care facilities in Greater Boston in the context of the pandemic of 2020-21. This paper …
The Weight Of Trauma: Exploring A New Method In Dance/Movement Therapy For Trauma Processing With Adolescents, Xavia Hawkins
The Weight Of Trauma: Exploring A New Method In Dance/Movement Therapy For Trauma Processing With Adolescents, Xavia Hawkins
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This author developed a movement-based trauma informed method that implemented symbolic play with sandbag weights with light and dark colored scarves, with adolescents at the Boys and Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, MA. This thesis was developed to observe how adolescents prioritize the magnitude of their trauma experiences to serve as additional insight towards treatment planning. Over a four-week process, participants created artistic responses to the trauma they identified most prevalent and engaged in symbolic play with different mediums in order to ultimately choose which prop felt most representative to how they viewed their trauma. This movement-based study supports …
Providing The Opportunity To Access Playfulness In Music Therapy With Adults In A Partial Hospital Program: The Implementation Of A Method, Carolynn Walker
Providing The Opportunity To Access Playfulness In Music Therapy With Adults In A Partial Hospital Program: The Implementation Of A Method, Carolynn Walker
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis explores playfulness in the therapeutic relationship and in music therapy with adults in a partial hospital program. Playfulness is shown to be an effective tool in mental health treatment, aiding in the development of coping skills (Magnuson & Barnett, 2013). A method was applied in order to establish to what extent that playfulness is present and able to be accessed. Five music therapy groups took place with adults age eighteen and older in a partial hospital program that was being conducted in a hybrid (both virtual and in-person) format. Clinical observations concluded that playfulness can be accessed in …
How Nature Calls In A More Secure Sense Of Self In The Face Of Perfectionism: An Expressive Arts Therapy Journey To Self-Identity, Marissa Aldieri
How Nature Calls In A More Secure Sense Of Self In The Face Of Perfectionism: An Expressive Arts Therapy Journey To Self-Identity, Marissa Aldieri
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis explores the relational dimensions of perfectionism, expressive arts therapy (ExAT), and the more-than-human natural world as these components influence the development and maintenance of the “sense of self.” This term refers to a perception of the “self” as a set of traits and beliefs that shape an individual’s perceived purpose in the world, often heavily influenced by external societal pressures at a young age. “I’m not good enough” often rings in the ears of educators, parents, coaches, expressive arts therapists, and other mental health workers as the fear of vulnerability, judgment, and failure inhibits creative impulse and intuitive …
Exploring Music, Imagery, And Racial-Ethnic-Cultural Identity With Youth In A Community Music Program: A Community Engagement Project, Anne Case
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The purpose of this community engagement project was to explore the use of music and imagery activities to support the racial-ethnic-cultural identity development of youth in a community music program. Using music, how do youth navigate identity development in their social-political-cultural context? The workshop structure and approaches were grounded in the liberatory approaches of Paulo Freire, with the aim of shifting power dynamics and expanding the critical awareness and consciousness of participants. In an unjust society in which marginalized groups are disproportionally burdened, the exploration and development of racial-ethnic-cultural identity and consciousness are protective factors and should be important topics …
Body Image And The Causes Of Dissatisfactions: Re-Shaping Negative Thinking Through Symbolic Powers Of Collage, Susie Thom
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Understanding why so many individuals struggle with their body image becomes easier by analyzing how society promotes a “thin ideal” through the media, the way women talk to one another about their bodies (a term known as fat talk), social comparisons, and how families advocate for a slender build. Body image refers to our perception, feelings, and actions in regard to our body (Kaslow & Eicher, 1988; Seijo, 2016). Negative thoughts and feelings about one’s body as a result of viewing the media’s unattainable thin ideals, engaging in harmful and negative dialogue about one’s body, comparing one’s body or appearance …
How Can The Expressive Arts Therapy Benefit Latinx/Latine Immigrant Families? A Literature, Maria Ticona
How Can The Expressive Arts Therapy Benefit Latinx/Latine Immigrant Families? A Literature, Maria Ticona
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Although there are many years of research and practice for the fields of family therapy and expressive arts therapy, there have been few times when the two integrated. In this Literature Review, the intersection between expressive arts therapy and family therapy is explored to further envision how it could benefit families who are Latinx/Latine immigrant. These families often experience traumatic poverty and violence in their home countries which leads them to decide to migrate. The journey to migrate to the United States, acculturate to a new culture, a new language, grapple with being undocumented or having temporary legality, and discrimination …
Impact Of Dance And Dance Movement Therapy Interventions For Student Mental Health, Karen Yatsko
Impact Of Dance And Dance Movement Therapy Interventions For Student Mental Health, Karen Yatsko
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review collects advantages and disadvantages of dance and dance movement therapy interventions for school-aged children. As interest in mental health availability grows, the lack of time and resources for the services already in place requires creative solutions. Connections are made between the two modalities via the history of healing practices, Laban Movement Analysis, and mirroring. Data collected via fMRI scans, salivary samples, and selfreports from small samples sizes are present in some combinations or solo. The author concludes that a combination of the therapy provided by DMT and the physicality and creativity of dance interventions would potentially fill …
Bringing The Body Into Art Therapy: The Use Of Touch And Body Awareness In Creative Healing, Janna Corsetti
Bringing The Body Into Art Therapy: The Use Of Touch And Body Awareness In Creative Healing, Janna Corsetti
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The focus on the use of healing touch and body awareness in art therapy is critically lacking. Despite the research supporting the use of body-oriented techniques in clinical therapy, there is little research related to this use specifically in art therapy. Research reveals that healing touch and body awareness can be instrumental in healing trauma, if done with the proper training and boundaries in place. The first form of attachment and comfort for children is that of touch. Therefore, it is imperative to acknowledge the power of touch and body awareness when healing from traumatic experiences. The purpose of this …
The Effects Of Dance/Movement Therapy On Treatment And Medication Compliance For Individuals Diagnosed With Schizophrenia: A Literature Review, Natalie Jacobs
The Effects Of Dance/Movement Therapy On Treatment And Medication Compliance For Individuals Diagnosed With Schizophrenia: A Literature Review, Natalie Jacobs
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
With a high prevalence of non-medication compliance in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and a wide range of side effects from administered antipsychotics, it is imperative that the field of dance/movement therapy advocates for the implementation of dance/movement therapy in the treatment for this population. This literature review addressed the gap in dance/movement therapy research on the use of dance/movement therapy to reduce antipsychotic medication side effects and increase medication compliance. The multiple challenges faced by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia were explored such as, stigmatization, the wide range of possible symptoms, poor insight, and movement dysfunctions. Side effects affecting cognitive, behavioral, …
Studio Expressive Arts Therapy: Towards A Classroom Method That Incorporates Art And Music, Michael Greenberg
Studio Expressive Arts Therapy: Towards A Classroom Method That Incorporates Art And Music, Michael Greenberg
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis explored the ways in which expressive arts therapy (ExAT) could be incorporated into a small therapeutic high school’s visual arts program. Through the development and implementation of a method, intermodal exchange between visual art and music was integrated into both the school’s art program and its group counseling offerings. Informed by a literature review of studio art therapy (SAT) as related to ExAT, three different interventions were used to fit within the frameworks of the high school’s offerings. The first intervention focused on making music with a few students within art classes while the rest of the class …
The Care And Keeping Of Therapeutic Connection In Telehealth: An Embodied Inquiry, Caitlyn Gilmore
The Care And Keeping Of Therapeutic Connection In Telehealth: An Embodied Inquiry, Caitlyn Gilmore
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This qualitative embodied artistic inquiry self-study, developed through my perspective as an emerging dance and movement therapist, explored the effects of using telehealth for therapy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The available literature discussed throughout this capstone thesis suggest that the adaptations made to therapy as a result of the pandemic affected the practices associated with dance and movement therapy’s theoretical principles of embodiment, attunement, and somatic countertransference. Because of the unknowns of COVID 19, research on mitigating the negative aspects of telehealth is still emerging, thus increasing my anxiety as an emerging professional. In order to address the anxiety …
Art Therapy Provides Relief To New And Expecting Mothers, Dailie Jeffs
Art Therapy Provides Relief To New And Expecting Mothers, Dailie Jeffs
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Throughout pregnancy, during childbirth, and after childbirth, new and expecting mothers often experience a great amount of anxiety and depressive symptoms that can be classified into three divisions: prenatal anxiety, fear of childbirth, and postpartum depression. Often these symptoms are overlooked and unresolved due to their short time span and being specifically linked to childbirth. However, these symptoms cause a lesser quality of life for the mother that can highly impact the mother and her newborn short-term and long-term. Art therapy techniques, explained by the Expressive Therapy’s Continuum, have proved beneficial in the aid of alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms …
Self-Compassion Integrated Art Therapy For Mothers During A Pandemic, Shannon Dover
Self-Compassion Integrated Art Therapy For Mothers During A Pandemic, Shannon Dover
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis reviews literature related to parental mental health and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). COVID-19 is a collective trauma in which individuals experience the trauma differently depending on race, gender, and class. Women’s experience of living during COVID-19 related to changes in the workplace, caretaking, and more. The pandemic influenced parents and notably mothers with increased stress, depression, grief, and anxiety. The practice of self-compassion reduces shame and self-criticism which are common experiences during parenting and trauma. Self-compassion and art therapy can aid in resiliency and make living during COVID-19 more comfortable. With a literature review, results yield the following …
Exploring The Usefulness Of Mindfulness Practices Through Zoom Meetings In Reducing Anxiety And/Or Stress Of Adults With Learning And Developmental Disabilities During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thatiane Abra
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis explored which mindfulness meditations or mindfulness practices could be beneficial in the online sessions, the extent to which adults with learning and developmental disabilities could learn the practices remotely, and how stress and anxiety disorders could be reduced through online mindfulness interventions. Furthermore, it was also necessary to address the online sessions as the only mental health treatment possibility during the Coronavirus pandemic for the clients observed and the benefits and limitations of these interventions. Additionally, the importance of structure and routine for this population, the multi-modal structure of the interventions, and how attunement plays an important role …
Healing Expressions: A Dance/Movement And Yoga Therapy Method For Emotional Sobriety, Cathryn Kruger
Healing Expressions: A Dance/Movement And Yoga Therapy Method For Emotional Sobriety, Cathryn Kruger
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Substance use disorder (SUD) affects 1 in 12 Americans aged 12 or older and brings with it devastating consequences to the individual, their family, and society as a whole (SAMHSA, 2016). Considered a chronic disease, over 85% of individuals in recovery from SUD relapse within their first year of sobriety (Sinha, 2011). Poor emotional regulation and stress tolerance are noted among the highest predictors of relapse (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020; Sinha, 2011). It is essential that these skills, termed “emotional sobriety”, be an integral element in the treatment process for those suffering from substance use disorder. This study …
Exploring Art Therapy Techniques In Parent-Child Dyads With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Yuval Minz
Exploring Art Therapy Techniques In Parent-Child Dyads With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Yuval Minz
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Exposure to trauma during childhood has been shown to have severe long-term consequences. It has been shown that art therapy promotes the reduction of trauma symptoms in children, as it allows them to easily engage in the process of therapy through non-verbal treatment. Involving the caregiver in the treatment process of children was shown to hold significant benefits for children, especially in a setting of parent-child art therapy interventions. In this capstone thesis, I present a case study in which I explored the impact of art therapy interventions performed in a parent-child dyad on the well-being of a child who …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This project focuses on the topic of food and works to answer the questions: Can we learn and teach others about ourselves through the kitchen? Is there room for food as a form of art, and can it be used in an expressive way? This community engagement project focuses on people who would like to share their family recipes, memories, or information about their family’s history and background. This project builds from previous literature and methods that have examined how food plays a role in the following topics: storytelling, memories, expression, and art. This project contributes to previous literature by …
The Experience Of Women On A High-Risk Pregnancy Unit Engaged In Art Therapy, Emili Sherfield
The Experience Of Women On A High-Risk Pregnancy Unit Engaged In Art Therapy, Emili Sherfield
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Considering the significant changes that occur throughout pregnancy, coping with such changes may be challenging, affecting those experiencing high-risk pregnancies in particular. Women facing high-risk pregnancies often endure heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, ultimately impacting their well-being and mental health. Medical concerns may lead to hospitalization, which has the potential to exacerbate an already distressing situation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. While evaluating beneficial therapeutic interventions to address the needs of this population, art therapy and art-making has proven to reduce anxiety, encourage coping strategies, provide an emotional outlet, and improve overall well-being. In light of these …

Connecting The Dots: Positive Effect Of Dance Movement Therapy With Immigrant Children; A Literature Review, Kyeyoung Park
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Growing data recommends dance/movement therapy as a promising approach for documented immigrant children’s mental health. I was a documented immigrant when I was 12 years old, and dance as therapy supported me emotionally and behaviorally. This paper mainly focuses on documented immigrant children with dance/movement therapy. This paper touches on various categories of refugees and undocumented immigrants, though insights into the lives of undocumented immigrants was also added to better understand the challenges they experience in general, including mental health issues. Immigrant children face challenges in every aspect of their life, such as adjusting in their new country, peer relationships, …
Storytelling As An Expressive Arts Therapy Intervention With Children Via Telehealth, Sidney Marie Joines
Storytelling As An Expressive Arts Therapy Intervention With Children Via Telehealth, Sidney Marie Joines
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
As an expressive arts therapist in training working in the midst of a global pandemic, I sought to develop a creative, safe, accessible, and effective intervention for children via telehealth during a time of great uncertainty. Coronavirus 2019 has had a massive impact on mental and physical health and disrupted the lives of billions across the globe; the pandemic also forced mental health professionals to online formats. I found a significant lack of literature around expressive arts therapy via telehealth. Through considering theoretical approaches from cinematherapy, narrative therapy, metaphor therapy, play therapy, and expressive arts therapy, I developed an eight-week …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis explores music therapy treatment for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. The first section outlines developmental considerations and interventions for preterm infants which include minimizing stress, prioritizing sleep, developing feeding behaviors, and promoting strategies for self-regulation of the infant. Both standard care and music therapy interventions are included in this discussion. The second section includes considerations and interventions for attachment and social development. These include skin- to-skin contact between infant and caregiver, the importance of emotional closeness in the infant-caregiver relationship, and supporting parents as they interact with their child in the hospital environment. The …
