This article represents some inquiries about Mohamed Dahman’s book entitled: Nomadic and stability. The researcher believes what motivated the author to write about this issue is the lackof studies that address the issue of sociology in the Sahraoui context. Therefore, this book is mainly about two eras; the pre- Spanish colonial period, 2- the period of stability and the occurrence of the social, legal institutions. Aatouf tried to analyze the content of the chapters of the book. He titled the first chapter as: Nomadic, as a life style. Dahman, in this chapter, tried to analyze the different types of Bedouins …

In her publication, the author expressed that the tribal gatherings in southern Morocco are of an extremely complex nature. According to Dr. Fatima Faiz, the element of water is considered a sacred element to these tribes as it embodies all life’s details. Also, the water is considered a sacred element for its pivotal role in ritual magic practices. The author asserts that water rituals in the southeast is not just a folkloric phenomenon, but it rather refers to the peculiarities of society as a well-structured social structure. At last, the author concluded her publication by stating that renewing the connection …

The discussion about territorial integrity through what is raised by the relations between the Moroccan metropolises and their desert expanses from a scientific, cognitive and intellectual aspect is a unified talk. The latter is due to the strong bonds that unite Moroccan with their surroundings, whether Sahrawi or otherwise, throughout history which evidently confirms that they were deeply aware of the significance of what these bonds build thanks to scholars and their great knowledge. The relations between the Sahara and the rest of the Morocco’s regions also provide and allow a great possibility for the expansion of the flag. Therefore, …

“Treat Everybody Right”: Examining Foodways To Improve Food Access, Alex B. Hill
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
Detroit is regularly assumed to be a “food desert” despite contradicting evidence. With fruits and vegetables available at each of Detroit’s 70 independent, full-line grocery stores, there remains a lack of understanding among media and academics of residents’ perception and preferences for food access. A baseline study was initiated during the summer of 2014 to understand residents’ own perceptions of food access and to assess the socio-cultural foodways utilized by residents. A total of 207 Detroit residents participated in focus groups and interviews to discuss food provisioning. Residents identified a wide range of food access points, from home gardens and …

Presidential Use Of Diversionary Drone Force And Public Support, Scott S. Boddery, Graid G. Klein

During times of domestic turmoil, the use of force abroad becomes an appealing strategy to US presidents in hopes of diverting attention away from internal conditions and toward a foreign policy success. Weaponized drone technology presents a low cost and potentially high-reward option to embattled presidents. While generally covert operations, drone strikes are frequently reported in the media, making them a viable diversionary tool. To gauge whether drone strikes are in fact capable of diverting the public’s attention, we surveyed 1198 Americans and find that a successful drone strike increases presidential approval despite a weak and sagging economy, and the …

Influenza Vaccine Uptake In Caregivers And Non-Caregivers: Implications For Policy And Practice, Nicholas Mercado
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Background: Caregivers are a critical and highly utilized healthcare resource. Previous research suggests that caregivers experience adverse physical and mental health outcomes and practice less self-care while serving their role. Influenza, or the flu, is a common and infectious disease caused by a virus that is responsible for millions of doctor visits, hospitalizations, and approximately 43,000 deaths annually. The most effective measure for addressing the flu is primary prevention, which includes a seasonal flu vaccine. Methods: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2016-2018 were analyzed. The study population included 154,170 respondents from 27 states and the District of …

Shifting and often diminishing environmental conditions, due to climate change, resource loss, and ecosystem degradation, pose a significant concern to both social and ecological systems. The field of conservation science has attempted to address environmental threats through varying approaches, transitioning from fortress conservation and complete human exclusion to community-based and co-managed models which incorporate human actors and social dimensions in the conservation process. The latest iteration of conservation scholarship, place-based conservation, is deeply rooted in interdisciplinary, social scientific thinking, and calls for significant practitioner engagement with local knowledge, practices, social constructions, and place meanings. It is an approach which emphasizes …

Education, Political Party, And Football Viewership Predict Americans' Attention To News About Concussions In Sports, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
News outlets, sports coverage, and even Hollywood movies have highlighted the growing body of research documenting the long-term negative consequences of traumatic injury in athletics, particularly, (sports-related) concussions. Despite so much media coverage, little is known about how much attention members of the American public pay to sports concussion news. Disparities in attention to concussion news among sociodemographic groups may contribute to further inequalities in rates of concussions that stem from participation in collision sports. In this study, using a 2017 nationally representative survey of US residents (n = 964), we examine the social, political, and demographic correlates of individuals’ …

Through this study gender disproportion is looked at between mental health and COVID-19 financial concerns among women and men. The aim is to asses how COVID-19 financial concerns may be contributing to stress, anxiety, and depression. It is hypothesized that; women will report worse mental health and greater economic concerns than …

Court-Packing And Democratic Erosion, Thomas Keck
Court-Packing And Democratic Erosion, Thomas Keck
Political Science - All Scholarship
When faced with an incumbent party that is deliberately tilting the electoral and institutional playing field, under what conditions should small-d democracy advocates respond with hardball tactics such as Court-packing? This paper surveys the comparative literature on democratic erosion for key lessons regarding the role of courts in polities where democratic erosion is underway. The literature suggests that independent courts may sometimes operate as guardrails of democracy, but that once captured by anti-system parties, courts may also serve as effective agents of democratic erosion. The paper then draws on the history of Court-packing in the United States in an effort …

Abstract for the full book:
This book explores how gender equality, a central part of the Nordic imaginary, is used in the political communication of Nordic states. The analyses presented move beyond conventional images and discourses of Nordic gender- and women-friendliness by critically investigating how and to what extent gender equality serves nation-branding in the Nordic region.
Nation-branding is an unescapable part of globalisation, which is a market-oriented process dominated by the West and predicated on the creation of winners and losers. Hence, efforts to strengthen the national brand or reputation of specific Nordic countries with the aid of gender …

For the nine papers that appear in this special issue, we identified three main organizing themes: (1) Understudied aspects of family financial socialization, (2) Individuals or couples in different-sex romantic relationships, and (3) Finances and perceived parent–child relationships. In this introduction, we describe the main points of each of these papers within each theme. We also discuss what we have learned from these papers (e.g., finances assessed using eight different datasets; range of samples including adults repaying loans, newlywed couples, and a nationally representative sample of U.S. college students) as well as what future research questions remain (e.g., financial studies …

Review Of: Cates, James. 2020. Serpent In The Garden: Amish Sexuality In A Changing World., Mark A. Yarhouse
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
James Cates offers a fascinating look at Amish views and experiences of marriage, family, sexuality, and gender in the book, Serpent in the Garden: Amish Sexuality in a Changing World. The analysis is based on “many years of interaction, informal interviews, and conversations with Amish confidantes…” (p. xiii). The upside of this approach is that the book has an “insider” feel to it. The downside is that the reader is not always sure how representative the stories are of the Amish community. From the opening story in the Preface to similar, colorful anecdotes throughout, the book may lend itself to …

‘I Am Just A Part Of The Community’: Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Women And The Third Person Perception, Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This article focuses on the third-person perception (TPP) of Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women. TPP’s central insight is that consumers believe media influences “her/him” (the third person) much more than “me” (the first person). Since media technologies pose challenges to these women’s sense of religious devotion, their TPP toward secular media contributes to the discussion about religion, gender, and media. The study uses quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including a survey, participant observation, and interviews, to answer three research questions: (1) Do Amish and Ultra-Orthodox women have the third-person perception, reflected by their estimation that the negative influence of secular media …

Contrasting Spaces In Plautdietsch: Language Variation And Change, Roslyn Burns
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
In this article, I explore linguistic variation in Plautdietsch through the lens of social variation and the resulting redistribution of linguistic forms across the community. Language change requires variation in a population and a social pathway for the variation to be distributed (or redistributed) across a community. This article explores two systems of variation in the Plautdietsch language as it is used across North America: the so-called traditional dialect system (based on descriptions from Thiessen 1977, Epp 1993, and Rempel 1995, among others), and the vowel system (based on Nieuweboer 1998, Burns 2016a,b, among others). I propose that linguistic diversification …

What Factors In Nepal Account For The Rural-Urban Discrepancy In Human Capital? Evidence From Household Survey Data, Satis Devkota, Shankar Ghimire, Mukti Upadhyay
Economics & Management Publications
We analyze the factors that determine human capital formation in the rural and urban sectors of Nepal and decompose the intersectoral difference into variables underlying supply and demand for human capital. In particular, we examine the role of access to primary and secondary schools as well as the socioeconomic, demographic, and geographic characteristics of households. Our results are based on Nepal Living Standards Survey data for 2004 and 2011. We find that access to schooling has a significant impact on the level of human capital, especially in rural areas. Our Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition attributes a large portion of the rural–urban gap …

Representative Regionalization: Toward More Equitable, Democratic, Responsive, And Efficient Local Government In New Brunswick, Zack Taylor, Jon Taylor
Centre for Urban Policy and Local Governance – Publications
Responding to the Government of New Brunswick’s Green Paper on Local Governance Reform released in April 2021, this report diagnoses the problems of the province’s existing system of local governance and proposes a solution that leverages existing assets to create a more equitable, democratic, responsive, and efficient local governance system. A reformed local governance system will help New Brunswickers confront difficult present and future economic and demographic challenges.
This report recommends strengthening New Brunswick’s 12 Regional Service Commissions along the lines of British Columbia’s regional districts—multi-purpose bodies that have coordinated service delivery and land-use planning in that province since the …
