'Who' Or 'What' Is The Rule Of Law?, Steven L. Winter Jun 2021

'Who' Or 'What' Is The Rule Of Law?, Steven L. Winter

Law Faculty Research Publications

The standard account of the relation between democracy and the rule of law focuses on law’s liberty-enhancing role in constraining official action. This is a faint echo of the complex, constitutive relation between the two. The Greeks used one word – isonomia – to describe both. If democracy is the system in which people have an equal say in determining the rules that govern social life, then the rule of law is simultaneously before, after, concurrent and synonymous with democracy: It contributes to the formation of citizens with the capacity for self-governance, serves as the instrument through which democratic decisions …

A Neuroscientist's Guide To The Vole, William M. Kenkel, Morgan L. Gustison, Annaliese K. Beery Jun 2021

A Neuroscientist's Guide To The Vole, William M. Kenkel, Morgan L. Gustison, Annaliese K. Beery

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Prairie voles have emerged as an important rodent model for understanding the neuroscience of social behavior. Prairie voles are well known for their capacity for pair bonding and alloparental care. These behavioral phenomena overlap with human social behavior but are not commonly observed in traditional rodent models. In this article, we highlight the many benefits of using prairie voles in neuroscience research. We begin by describing the advantages of using diverse and non-traditional study models. We then focus on social behaviors, including pair bonding, alloparental care, and peer interactions, that have brought voles to the forefront of social neuroscience. We …

Micro-Expressions Of Fear During The 2016 Presidential Campaign Trail: Their Influence On Trait Perceptions Of Donald Trump, Patrick A. Stewart, Elena Svetieva Jun 2021

Micro-Expressions Of Fear During The 2016 Presidential Campaign Trail: Their Influence On Trait Perceptions Of Donald Trump, Patrick A. Stewart, Elena Svetieva

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 2016 United States presidential election was exceptional for many reasons; most notably the extreme division between supporters of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In an election that turned more upon the character traits of the candidates than their policy positions, there is reason to believe that the non-verbal performances of the candidates influenced attitudes toward the candidates. Two studies, before Election Day, experimentally tested the influence of Trump’s micro-expressions of fear during his Republican National Convention nomination acceptance speech on how viewers evaluated his key leadership traits of competence and trustworthiness. Results from Study 1, conducted 3 weeks prior …

Young Women’S Body Attitudes And Sexual Satisfaction: Examining Dehumanization And Communication As Serial Multiple Mediators, Kathryn J. Holland, Kristen E. Silver, Allison E. Cipriano, Rebecca L. Brock Jun 2021

Young Women’S Body Attitudes And Sexual Satisfaction: Examining Dehumanization And Communication As Serial Multiple Mediators, Kathryn J. Holland, Kristen E. Silver, Allison E. Cipriano, Rebecca L. Brock

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Women’s bodies are frequent sites of stigmatization. The internalization of negative attitudes toward the body can have negative implications for women’s sexual well-being. In the current study, we examined the relationships between young women’s internalization of body stigma—including body shape, genitals, and menstrual periods—and sexual satisfaction. Additionally, we tested two mechanisms that may mediate the relationship between body attitudes and sexual satisfaction: dehumanization (i.e., feelings of a loss of autonomy and subjectivity) and communication with a sexual partner (e.g., expressing needs and desires). We collected and analyzed survey data from 569 undergraduate women. We tested serial mediation models, such that …

Improving Gifted Talent Development Can Help Solve Multiple Consequential Real-World Problems, Jonathan Wai, Benjamin J. Lovett Jun 2021

Improving Gifted Talent Development Can Help Solve Multiple Consequential Real-World Problems, Jonathan Wai, Benjamin J. Lovett

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Fully developing the talents of all students is a fundamental goal for personal well-being and development and ultimately for global societal innovation and flourishing. However, in this paper we focus on what we believe is an often neglected and underdeveloped population, that of the gifted. We draw from the cognitive aptitude and gifted education research literatures to make the case that solutions to consequential real-world problems can be greatly enhanced by more fully developing the talents of the intellectually gifted population, which we operationalize in this paper as roughly the top 5% of cognitive talent. Should well-supported high achievers choose …

Carbon Dioxide Emissions And The Macroeconomy: Evidence From The Asean Region, Mari Joy M. Buenavista, Rosalina Palanca-Tan Jun 2021

Carbon Dioxide Emissions And The Macroeconomy: Evidence From The Asean Region, Mari Joy M. Buenavista, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

This paper examined the effects of income, trade, and foreign direct investments (FDI) on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries for the period of 1970–2011 using the panel corrected standard errors (PCSE) estimation method. The results of the study were consistent with the environmental Kuznet’s curve (EKC) hypothesis – CO2 emissions increase as per capita GDP increases up to a certain income threshold, beyond which further increase in income is accompanied by lower emissions. However, the threshold per capita GDP (estimated to be USD 20,017) is way above the income levels of …

The Role Of Nonzero Conjectural Variation In Pollution Abatement And Output In The Design Of Emission Taxes, Luis Gautier Jun 2021

The Role Of Nonzero Conjectural Variation In Pollution Abatement And Output In The Design Of Emission Taxes, Luis Gautier

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The presence of nonzero conjectural variations in pollution abatement and output make emission taxes less effective with respect to reducing emissions. This has implications for the characterization of the optimal emission tax, particularly in an international context where there are large asymmetries in pollution intensities. A higher degree of collusion in output between polluting firms results in higher emissions taxes in the non-cooperative equilibrium. In contrast, a higher degree of collusion in abatement between polluting firms results in lower emissions taxes in the non-cooperative equilibrium. These results rely on the presence of nonzero conjectural variations and large asymmetries in pollution …

The Nigerian Economy, Monetary Policy And Covid-19: An Unholy Trinity, Polycarp Ishaku Mikloda Ph.D Jun 2021

The Nigerian Economy, Monetary Policy And Covid-19: An Unholy Trinity, Polycarp Ishaku Mikloda Ph.D

Bullion

This article presents the dynamics of an unholy trinity involving the interplay of economic forces in the thick of a crippling health crisis with monetary policy to the rescue through activation of relevant instruments. In response to the outbreak, the Monetary Policy Committee announced several policy measures which include granting of extension of loan moratorium on principal repayments, interest rate reduction on all intervention loan facilities from 9% to 5%, establishment of a N50bn targeted credit facility to household and MSMEs and regulatory forbearance to banks and credit support to the healthcare industry among others. it is worthy to state …

The Predictive Power Of Banks' Liquidity On Profitability In Nigeria, Okonta Sunday Ukeje Ph.D Jun 2021

The Predictive Power Of Banks' Liquidity On Profitability In Nigeria, Okonta Sunday Ukeje Ph.D

Bullion

This study investigated the predictive power of banks' statutory liquidity on their protability in Nigeria between 1990 and 2019. The vector autoregression and variance decomposition methodology were employed. The findings showed that a change in return on asset (ROA) was weakly associated with itself, with liquidity variables, liquidity risk and real gross domestic product growth rates. In a five-year prediction, a 100% change in ROA was explained by itself in the short run. Other variables showed strong exogeneity with ROA, from short to long-run, an indication that banks in Nigeria face bleak future in using statutory liquidity to positively and …

Understanding Balance Of Payments And Its Link With Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Ocheuje Leonard Pius Jun 2021

Understanding Balance Of Payments And Its Link With Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Ocheuje Leonard Pius

Bullion

Developments in the balance of payments of any country is generally of interest to national policymakers, international investors, financial and economic analysts as well as international financial institutions. In recent times, Nigeria recorded persistent current account as well as overall BOP decits and these created discomfort among policy makers with regards to its sustainability and possible implications for the economy. This paper explores some of the major developments and trends in Nigeria's BOP as well as their interrelationship with other macroeconomic accounts. It also provided clarity to the structure and components of Nigeria's BOP statistics as compiled in line with …

Financing Public Deficits In Nigeria: Groping In The Dark For Taxation, Umar Elems Mahmud Ph.D Jun 2021

Financing Public Deficits In Nigeria: Groping In The Dark For Taxation, Umar Elems Mahmud Ph.D

Bullion

The objective of this study is to conduct an expository examination of the inhibitions of voluntary tax compliance and to explore prospects of leapfrogging tax contribution from its posterior position, given the lacunae in precious studies. In the descriptive research design, underpinned by the range of structural-functionalist and expectancy theories, salient among the findings of the study is the diminished contribution of taxation to Nigeria's GDP and total revenue due to weak institutional framework and “faded” enthusiasm of taxpayers. In the circumstance of the situation, and until drastic reforms are successfully executed, Nigeria may be groping in the dark, in …

Capital Formation And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Re-Examination, Emmanuel Ating Onwiodiokit Ph.D, Gabriel Efe Otolorin Jun 2021

Capital Formation And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Re-Examination, Emmanuel Ating Onwiodiokit Ph.D, Gabriel Efe Otolorin

Bullion

This study re-examines the impact of capital formation on Nigeria's economic growth. The paper adopts the Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) technique on annual time series data covering the period 1981 to 2018. Infrastructure, health and skills competitiveness indices computed from the global competitiveness reports were adapted to capture key specifics of physical and human capital formation. The results from the DOLS show that gross fixed capital formation had a negative and significant impact on economic growth. The results also indicate that external debt and total labour force had a negative effect on economic growth. On the other hand, human …

Topology Identification In Distribution System Via Machine Learning Algorithms, Peyman Razmi, Mahdi Ghaemi Asl, Giorgio Canarella, Afsaneh Sadat Emami Jun 2021

Topology Identification In Distribution System Via Machine Learning Algorithms, Peyman Razmi, Mahdi Ghaemi Asl, Giorgio Canarella, Afsaneh Sadat Emami

Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research

This paper contributes to the literature on topology identification (TI) in distribution networks and, in particular, on change detection in switching devices' status. The lack of measurements in distribution networks compared to transmission networks is a notable challenge. In this paper, we propose an approach to topology identification (TI) of distribution systems based on supervised machine learning (SML) algorithms. This methodology is capable of analyzing the feeder's voltage profile without requiring the utilization of sensors or any other extraneous measurement device. We show that machine learning algorithms can track the voltage profile's behavior in each feeder, detect the status of …

Pathological Racism, Chronic Racism & Targeted Universalism, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Guy-Uriel Charles Jun 2021

Pathological Racism, Chronic Racism & Targeted Universalism, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Guy-Uriel Charles

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Race and law scholars almost uniformly prefer antisubordination to anticlassification as the best way to understand and adjudicate racism. In this short Essay, we explore whether the antisubordination framework is sufficiently capacious to meet our present demands for racial justice. We argue that the antisubordination approach relies on a particular conception of racism, which we call pathological racism, that limits its capacity for addressing the fundamental restructuring that racial justice requires. We suggest, in a manner that might be viewed as counterintuitive, that targeted universalist remedies might be more effective to address long term racial inequality but might also be …

Exposure Characterization And Assessment Of Airborne Chemicals And Sars-Cov-2 Transmission In New York City Nail Salons, Amelia P. H. Watkins Jun 2021

Exposure Characterization And Assessment Of Airborne Chemicals And Sars-Cov-2 Transmission In New York City Nail Salons, Amelia P. H. Watkins

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Currently, there are 156,000 people employed as manicurists or pedicurists in the United States. Employment in this sector is expected to grow by 10% over the next decade. Exposure assessments have revealed that salon workers are chronically exposed to a variety of substances that cause respiratory sensitization, developmental problems, contact dermatitis, blood, liver, and kidney issues, as well as nervous system impacts. Most recently, the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic has raised the issue of the vulnerability of nail salon workers to airborne infectious diseases as well. This dissertation aims to characterize and assess the chemical exposures that nail salon workers …

Holding Foundations Accountable For Equity Commitments, Tanya Beer, Patricia Patrizi, Julia Coffman Jun 2021

Holding Foundations Accountable For Equity Commitments, Tanya Beer, Patricia Patrizi, Julia Coffman

The Foundation Review

In recent years, foundations of all types and sizes have made commitments to advance racial equity and justice. But good intentions can be undermined by the strategic and administrative structures and processes that shape foundation decisions. Social critics have deconstructed and shed light on the ways in which institutional operating procedures reinforce racism and other forms of injustice in police departments, the courts, and health and welfare agencies. So too, foundation practices warrant serious review.

This article examines how foundation strategy, evaluation, grantee reporting, and monitoring processes have allowed foundations to retain their power and sidestep direct accountability to the …

Taste Activity In The Parabrachial Region In Adult Rats Following Neonatal Chorda Tympani Transection, Louis J. Martin, Joseph M. Breza, Suzanne I. Sollars Jun 2021

Taste Activity In The Parabrachial Region In Adult Rats Following Neonatal Chorda Tympani Transection, Louis J. Martin, Joseph M. Breza, Suzanne I. Sollars

Psychology Faculty Publications

The chorda tympani is a gustatory nerve that fails to regenerate if sectioned in rats 10 days of age or younger. This early denervation causes an abnormally high preference for NH4Cl in adult rats, but the impact of neonatal chorda tympani transection on the development of the gustatory hindbrain is unclear. Here, we tested the effect of neonatal chorda tympani transection (CTX) on gustatory responses in the parabrachial nucleus (PbN). We recorded in vivo extracellular spikes in single PbN units of urethane-anesthetized adult rats following CTX at P5 (chronic CTX group) or immediately prior to recording (acute CTX …

Children As Mischievous Spirits: Legitimizing Child Cruelty And Filicide In Contemporary Africa, Chima Agazue Jun 2021

Children As Mischievous Spirits: Legitimizing Child Cruelty And Filicide In Contemporary Africa, Chima Agazue

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The belief that certain humans are spiritual entities and the belief that some people are spiritually possessed can be found across histories and cultures. While these individuals are not always viewed in the negative or treated inhumanely, cases abound whereby degrading and inhumane treatments are meted out to some of them. In the African continent, certain groups of people, particularly children are linked to certain mischievous spirits due to their unusual appearance, aberrant behavior, disability, chronic illness, psychopathology or exceptional ability. Some are also suspected and consequently mistreated due to events surrounding their birth. Such children are known by different …

Prenatal Polysubstance Exposure (Ppe) And Adhd: Comparison Of Behavior Profiles In Children And Adolescents, Rana Tanios Jun 2021

Prenatal Polysubstance Exposure (Ppe) And Adhd: Comparison Of Behavior Profiles In Children And Adolescents, Rana Tanios

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Previous research reveals pervasive polysubstance use during pregnancy, with widespread neurological, cognitive, and behavioral deficits that have lasting implications for both adults and children with prenatal polysubstance exposure (PPE; Behnke et al., 2013; Forray, 2016). Early PPE identification leads to improved long-term outcomes. However, identifying PPE is difficult due to underreported use, absent dysmorphic features, and behaviorally similar profiles to other psychiatric conditions, with ADHD identified as the most common referral and most prevalent diagnosis assigned for children with PPE (Chasnoff et al., 2010). Despite similar behavioral symptoms, emerging data reveal a specific neurological profile for PPE distinct from ADHD, …

On Blending Active Student Responding With Synchronous Instruction To Evaluate Response Accuracy, Nicole A. Hollins Jun 2021

On Blending Active Student Responding With Synchronous Instruction To Evaluate Response Accuracy, Nicole A. Hollins

Dissertations

As of 2016, approximately 28% of college students in the United States were taking at least one online course (U.S. Department of Education, 2016), and it was projected that the percentage of students enrolled in online courses would continue to increase 33% each year (Pethokoukis, 2002). The COVID-19 pandemic hastened further shifts from in-person to virtual learning for many institutions of higher education. Given this rapid shift to online instruction, it is critical to evaluate the effectiveness of online instructional procedures. Providing multiple opportunities for students to respond to instruction has proven to be an effective procedure across most educational …

Black Men’S Perception Of Their Father-Son Relationship, Shaakira E. Jones Jun 2021

Black Men’S Perception Of Their Father-Son Relationship, Shaakira E. Jones

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions that Black men have of their relationships with their fathers, specifically, adult sons’ retrospective perceptions of their fathers’/father figures’ involvement and nurturance during childhood, and their current emotional availability. The aim is also to explore whether perceptions of their fathers predict Black men’s current psychological well-being. The following measures are used: (a) a demographic questionnaire, (b) the Nurturant Fathering Scale (NFS, Finley & Schwartz, 2004; Williams & Finley, 1997), (c) the Father Involvement Scale (FIS, Finley & Schwartz, 2004), (d) the Lum Emotional Availability of Parenting Scale (LEAP; Lum & …

The Social Support Networks Of Students Who Identify As Black And Latino/A/X In Stem And Sbe Graduate Programs At Predominantly White Institutions, Kristi A. Tullis Jun 2021

The Social Support Networks Of Students Who Identify As Black And Latino/A/X In Stem And Sbe Graduate Programs At Predominantly White Institutions, Kristi A. Tullis

Dissertations

Graduate students from historically underrepresented minority (URM) groups (those who identify as Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino/a/x, Native American, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders and/or Alaska Natives) encounter systemic and institutional hindrances to degree completion when enrolled in STEM doctoral programs at predominantly white institutions (Guiffrida & Douthit, 2010). Support networks have been identified as an important component for retention and success for graduate students from URM groups (Carlone & Johnson, 2007; Clewell, 1987; Johnson-Bailey, Valentine, Cervero, & Bowles, 2008; Joseph, 2012; Sweitzer, 2009). This study investigates the composition and structure of URM graduate students’ support networks, where their support comes from, in what capacity, …

Policy Capacities And Effective Policy Design: A Review, Ishani Mukherjee, M. Kerem Coban, Azad Singh Bali Jun 2021

Policy Capacities And Effective Policy Design: A Review, Ishani Mukherjee, M. Kerem Coban, Azad Singh Bali

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Effectiveness has been understood at three levels of analysis in the scholarly study of policy design. The first is at the systemic level indicating what entails effective formulation environments or spaces making them conducive to successful design. The second reflects more program level concerns, surrounding how policy tool portfolios or mixes can be effectively constructed to address complex policy objectives. The third is a more specific instrument level, focusing on what accounts for and constitutes the effectiveness of particular types of policy tools. Undergirding these three levels of analysis are comparative research concerns that concentrate on the capacities of government …

Feminist Geographies Of Online Gaming, Orlando Woods Jun 2021

Feminist Geographies Of Online Gaming, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper identifies opportunities and pathways through which feminist digital geographies can expand into the realm of online gaming. Whilst research at the nexus of gender and online gaming has come a long way in the past two decades, geographical perspectives are noticeably lacking. They can contribute to the discourse by emphasising the contingent nature of online gamespaces, and how a gendered subject position might be redefined through, and help to redefine, the (in)distinctions between “online” and “offline”, “gaming” and “non-gaming” spaces. I identify four directions in which feminist geographies of online gaming can unfold: aesthetic-affective spaces of the “virtually …
